Never in my life have I thought I would be scared only by someone's voice. His aura was dominating which made me gulp. What's more, he called me a little girl when he, himself, looked the same age as mine.
"I am twenty-three," I yelled. "And, I could understand you also must be of the same age." I scoffed.
When he tried to free his hand from my grip, I held it with both my hands, and shouted “Are you insane?”
He narrowed his eyebrows, and at the same time, he clenched his jaw. “What did you say?”
With all my strength, I pulled him back while he looked at me with a serious as well as confused face. “You…”
I didn’t let him finish his sentence.
I shouted “I know life is tough but it is not an option. I don’t know what your problem is, but if everyone, who has problems decide to die, then no one will remain on this earth.”
“Listen…” he pointed his finger at me.
“Life is precious. Think about your family before you commit suicide.” I tried to put some sense into his head.
“Suicide?” he scoffed.
I noticed his serious expression turning into a small smile but it faded in a second. He bent a little to match my height and I noticed how tall he was. Not less than six feet.
And, did I mention his muscular chest that was revealed as his top two buttons were unfastened?
“Do I look like a guy, who is thinking to kill himself?” he questioned, raising his eyebrow.
From head to toe, everything he wore was expensive. A branded watch, shoes, and his black and black clothes. It clarified to me he was not facing any money problems but his soulless look made me feel he must be facing some other problems.
I mean, who doesn't have problems in life?
He snapped his finger in front of my eyes as I lost in my thoughts. He said, tugging his lips to a side, “I don’t like killing myself. I prefer killing others.”
If it was another situation, I would have laughed at his words but the situation was different, I could not feel anything except to be relaxed as no one was dying or attempting suicide.
With his expressions, I understood he was not trying to kill himself. I said “My mistake! But, anyone would think the same. You stood there as if you were going to jump off the building.”
He kept looking at me as if I were his prey. I distanced myself from him when he asked in his hoarse voice “What’s your name?”
“Sorry! Goodbye.” I turned around to leave but he held my hand which sent chills down my spine. Before I could speak, I was pulled by him, and the next thing I noticed was how close his face was to me.
“W-what…”
“SE-RE-NA!” he spoke out loud after seeing my name tag on the coat. “If someone asks you something, you should answer. Especially, to people like me. Do you understand?”
“The hell!” I gritted. I glared at him after I freed myself from his hold. “And, if someone doesn’t answer, you better don’t force them. Do you understand?”
I couldn’t decipher his emotions. His eyes were warning me but he didn’t seem to be angry.
Creepy guy!
Again, I turned around and started to leave. My walk was halted when he shouted “Selena!”
I gritted my teeth. Without turning back, I said “It’s Serena. Not Selena.”
I could feel him coming closer to me and before I could take one more step, he whispered into my ear “Not everyone, who stands at the edge is suicidal. There are monsters, who enjoy standing near death. And, be careful with your words next time.”
Next time? There would never be next time. I thought.
I rolled my eyes and walked away without even looking at him one last time.

My messy long brown hair, tired face, and my not-so-perfect figure, always made me feel insecure about my looks. Though I rarely cared about myself, sometimes I felt ugly when I looked at myself in the mirror.
Quickly, I combed my hair and walked away from the mirror. I had more things to do instead of focusing on my cannot-be-changed beauty. Plastic surgery was the only option I could think of.
The first thing I heard as soon as I reached the hospital was the patient had left. Though I had no relationship with him, it angered me so much.
“Did he tell you anything before he left?” I asked the nurse.
“No!” She replied. “He didn’t even consult us before he was leaving. It seems he left just a few minutes back as I checked on him ten minutes ago.” She took a pause. “I can understand he has issues with family members but I never thought he would leave without informing you. Please complete other formalities otherwise we would be in big trouble.”
I lied to them when I joined him in the hospital. I told them we were distant relatives only to avoid unnecessary questions.
“Thank you,” I said, took his discharge sheet, and walked out.
As I raised my head, all I could see was darkness consuming the sky. On the night of a weekend, when everyone was partying, I went to the hospital only to get frustrated. I spent my time and my money on someone unknown but he couldn’t even show his gratitude to me.
Whatever, it was for my best. What if something serious had happened to him when he was staying at the hospital? It might have put me into serious trouble.
As I kept walking to reach my house, I saw Mira hanging out with her boyfriend. I waved my hand at her but I stopped myself from doing it as I realized she would invite me to join them, which I couldn’t afford, especially after I spent almost all my monthly salary on a stranger. When I was about to leave, I heard her voice “Serena!”
I bit my lips and let out a sigh before I smiled at her. As expected, they invited me to join them. Even though I made a thousand excuses, they wouldn’t let me go, and I gave in.
“We are planning to go to the pub tomorrow. You should come with us.” Mira said.
When I was about to say ‘Yes’, my wallet laughed at me.
“Some other time,” I said.
After having only a cold coffee, I left without staying for more time as it was getting late. I loved their pair. The way he was showing his affection towards her made me wonder how it would be to be in a sweet relationship like theirs.
I came out of my thoughts and I flinched when I heard a loud thud. It sounded as if a heavy drum fell. I looked around, frightened, and after I realized I was the only one in the street, my fear multiplied that increased my pace.
As I took a turn, I bumped into a guy that made me lose my balance but before I could touch the ground, a pair of hands grabbed me.
“You again!”
Sometimes, the things we thought would never appear in our lives again, would come rushing toward us. A mere coincidence or if fate has already planned it, no one could tell. “Do you like staying in my arms this much?” He smirked, as I remained in the same position without even attempting to move. Immediately, I stood straight and asked “Were you following me?” He gave me a deadly stare that made me think I was not even worth being followed by anyone. “I… didn’t mean to be rude.” I scoffed. “Of course, why would anyone follow me?” “What are you doing alone here? Aren’t you aware of the crime rate or are you not scared of people, who commit crimes?” Not just his words but his eyes were commanding. Who could he be? He seemed as if he were a walking mystery. “I… I was with my friend and…” I stopped speaking. “W-wait! Why am I even explaining to you?” “Because I asked you a question.” He rolled his eyes. I stepped forward to leave but he stopped me, saying “Don’t go that way.”“W
I could not believe what I was seeing. The man, who left the hospital, without even informing anyone came back after two weeks. At my house, in front of me. “You…” “Ms. Serena! I’m sorry for leaving without informing you.” He apologized. “I had some work to take care of.” Even though I was raging, I simply nodded my head. I could not get into fights with elders. “How do you know my place? And, how do you know about me?” “I have gathered your details from the hospital staff. I have connections.” He winked. When I didn’t reply to him, he said “I think you are so angry at me. Can’t you forgive, thinking of me as your father?” Father? I knew it was just a word that slipped out of his mouth and it meant nothing to him but it made me smile a little. I shrugged my shoulders, saying “Fine! That’s okay. You must be having your reasons but it would have been nice if you have at least left a message.” “I apologize again.” He said and became silent for a few seconds. “Well… I am
Again. I saw him again. The shirtless, muscular man in front of me was Hayden, and the funniest thing was I came to deliver flowers to him. “Care to explain what you are doing here?” He asked in his usual serious tone. “You are taking pictures. Who the hell are you? Are you spying on me?” I let out a sigh after hearing him. There we go again, him and his narcissistic self. “Instead of helping me, you are posing questions. Do you think so highly of yourself? I’m not here to spy on you, I’m not your fan girl.” I rolled my eyes. “I came here to deliver your black roses.” “And, where is my bouquet?” he asked, crouching down. I bent my head down and mumbled “It fell into the pool.” Through the corner of my eyes, I saw him extending his hand. “Come out of the pool.” “No!” “Why? Do you like my swimming pool this much?” “I am drenched,” I shouted, frustrated. Then I noticed him walk towards the sun lounger and took the towel that was on the seat. He put it on the ground and turned b
SERENA Wow! Interesting wall. No, no, interesting vase. The color, the shape… Don’t speak. “Fuck!” I let out a sigh as I couldn’t get deviated from his thoughts despite how much I tried. That moment was still playing in front of my eyes, the way he held me and looked into my eyes. “What are you thinking about?” Mira asked, standing beside me. “About the arrival of your childhood love?” “Mira!” She wiggled her eyebrows. “Not him…” I pressed my lips together. “There was this guy… a mysterious one…” I saw her getting excited. “And…?” “And nothing.” I laughed. “He was different. Whenever we met, we always quarreled. That arrogant jerk…” “Are you changing the hero of your story? Or what?” she started to tease me. “No!” I made a proud face. “Because the hero of my story is myself.” I sold the last bouquet before I started to walk out. When I opened the door, I saw Mr. Otis in front of me. In his casual hoodie, spectacles, and a different hairstyle, I nearly couldn’t re
It was surprising to see him as he didn’t inform me beforehand. My lips curved up with a smile but I came back to my senses when I saw Eric struggling to catch his breath. “Who the hell are you?” Hayden growled. I held Hayden’s hand that was holding Eric’s throat and tried to free Eric while saying “Hayden, leave him. He is my friend.”Even after hearing me, Hayden gripped his throat for a few seconds and then he left him. Eric fell to his knees, coughing. I crouched down and patted his back, gently. “Eric, are you alright?” As he was still trying to catch his breath, I looked at Hayden and shouted “What have you done, Hayden!” “He’s lucky he’s still alive.” He mumbled. “Eric! I’m so sorry.” I held his face in between my palms. Finally, our gazes met after a long time. His chocolate brown eyes, which I always adored, made me smile. “Serena!” he spoke while standing straight. Then his gaze fell on Hayden, who looked unbothered even after what he had done. “Who is he?” “Who are
“Don’t you think this rose lipstick is weird on me?” I asked, looking at my reflection in the mirror. My long black frock, straightened hair, and high heels made me look different than usual. Despite how much Mira tried to make me beautiful, I was never satisfied. She did an amazing job with the makeup but something was lacking; confidence. I didn’t know why, I always felt I was abandoned because my face didn’t please my parents. It started from there. Every time people adopted my friends at the orphanage, my classmates got praised for how perfect they looked, all those little things somewhat increased my insecurity about my looks. “You look amazing,” Mira shouted, fed up with my doubts and questions. “Don’t think much.” She wrapped her arms around me, saying “Remember, you are going on a date. You better don’t ruin this makeup.” I was not sure why he asked me to go on a date with him, I didn’t even know what he meant by a proper date. Anyhow, I accepted as I wanted to spend time w
My eyes were wide open but all I could see was darkness and in it, I kept seeing Hayden. I could not forget the previous night's moments, especially the hug. I thought Eric would make that day special but Hayden came out of nowhere. Anyone could think I was overreacting but I was not. “I think you are planning to resign. You won’t even care about your superiors' words now.” I heard Emma that made me come out of my thoughts. “Sorry?” “I have been talking to you for the past five minutes. And, now you respond?” She shouted. I was zoned out. I didn’t listen to her. “Oh! I… I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to ignore you or something like that.” I apologized sincerely. She glared at me for a few seconds before saying "Arrange everything that we need for the evening’s event.” “Sure.” She rolled her eyes and walked to Jasper to assign work to him. I sat on the chair, letting out a sigh. Controlling myself from all the thoughts that were distracting me from doing my work, I started to take
Although we all received our payment, we were saddened as the event didn’t happen and our effort had gone to waste. No one could expect how death arrives. Who would expect a rich businessman would suddenly die of a heart attack in the middle of a birthday celebration? Apart from that, I couldn’t stop thinking about Hayden. His angry face, his punch, and the way he made the man kneel wouldn’t stop revolving in my head. It made me feel my life was valued and it was not worthless. His behavior overwhelmed me and I would never forget it. Also, I wondered if the client who was dead, was the one whom Hayden met in the hotel and the thought of Hayden might be saddened because of his death worried me so I texted him if he was fine. I kept looking at my cell phone, waiting for Hayden’s reply. Hayden – I’m alright. Why would I cry over his death? He replied to my text. It clarified me he was there to meet someone else. Knowing that Hayden was alright, I felt relaxed. We might not have had a
