Drops of rain beat upon the car windshields as Dax sat behind the steering wheel with Carmen in the passenger seat.
Both of them had not spoken since they left the Golden Eagle hotel.
“Don't take me home?” Carmen finally gained the courage to say.
“Can I ask why?” Dax mumbled, keeping his eyes fixed on the road.
“Just because…”
“Okay... Where are we heading then?”
“Anywhere except my house and yours.”
For a moment Dax's eyes swayed away from the road and passionately gazed at Carmen. Then he placed his focused back.
“How are you feeling now?” Dax mumbled.
Without taking her sight of the window glass and the several dots of raindrops on it, Carmen softly breathed.
“I feel hot.” She absentmindedly mumbled.
“Same. Maybe it's the heater. I think that I should turn it off.” Dax worriedly said.
Hearing the discomfort in his voice, Carmen stared away from the window and gazed at him.
“Are you okay?” She asked in
“Mr. Ash, you are one very lucky guy. Another hit, and we were going to be talking about a broken jaw. However, you have nothing to worry about since only your skin got badly bruised.” The doctor said while staring at the x-ray results. After looking at her watch for a second, Carmen gazed at the doctor and Dax with less patience in her eyes and a smile on her lips.“That's good. It's a relief that you are fine.” Carmen gently intoned as she stood from the chair.“You are leaving?” Dax asked with a bit of shock in his voice.“Yes, I got to get to work. I'm already a few minutes late.”“Oh, okay. Text me when you arrive.”“Sure.”The smile on Dax's lips slowly faded as he watched Carmen leave the room, then his face became dulled when the door shut behind her.‘How long will it take for you to love me back? Is that even possible?’ Dax doubtfully
Chester stood up immediately when he saw Carmen coming his way, then the smile on his face quickly faded when his eyes caught a glimpse of Mrs. Smith just a few steps behind her daughter. When they got closer, Chester's lips moved, but no words came out as he stared at Carmen and her mother walked right past him without recognizing his presence.“You know, mother, I could have handle the entire Ali's situation without your involvement, and I had it all under control,” Carmen said with a bit of aggression in her tone.“If by handle, you mean screaming like an uncivil being, then you truly had it handled. Anyway, what did she say to have you all work up?” Mrs. Smith curiously asked.“Nothing.”“It didn't seem like nothing to me.”“Let it go, mother.”For a moment, Chester doubtfully stared behind them as they walked further into the hallway and entered the office. T
The air condition had the office chill, and yet there was nothing but intense fumes between these two childhood friends.“When did you stop playing fair?” Liam inquired with bitterness in his voice.“What are you talking about?” Dax asked while blankly looking at his friend.A smirk made its way to Liam's lips as he intensely stared at Dax before resting back in his chair. Then within a split second, a frown crossed his face while his eyes burned with fury.“There was a foul play last night, and the events that took place aren't settling right with me.” Liam calmly said, yet his voice was cold.“What does that have to do with me?” Dax asked with a bit of aggression in his tone.As anger stirred within him, Liam swallowed down his frustration and kept his expression calm even though he had his fingers folded in a tight fist.“Halton hosted a party. Ali just happened to be there, so does Carmen and me. Then I get drugged and somehow end
The just-risen sun shone softly on the city streets as Carmen stared out of the car window with a frown on her lips.“Do you want me to get securities to remove them?” Dax gently asked when he noticed the frustration on her face.“No. This is exactly what our parents wanted when they released the information about our marriage to the news media a week ago. And I can continuously try to avoid those reporters, but that doesn't change the fact that we are getting married two weeks from now.” Carmen said. Even though she tried to keep her voice normal as possible, Dax could still hear the anger, sadness, and disappointment in her words.“Is this what you want?” He asked while staring straight into her eyes. There was confusion in Carmen's gaze for a second. Then she broke eye contact with him and mumbled, “What are you talking about?”“Is marrying me what you want, Carm?” Dax firmly asked.
All of Carmen's anxieties came tumbling back as she looked at Dax with fear in her eyes, and even though his face bore no expression, he felt his spirit sink while staring back at her.The smile on Doctor Ben's lips slowly faded when he realized that he was the only one in the room excited about the news. Then he slightly coughed to clear his throat and said, “Also, the reason you fainted was because of a poor diet and stress.”“Can you excuse us?” Dax asked without staring at Ben.“Yeah… Sure.”“Oh! And this news shouldn't leave this room, or else this hospital may end up with a lawsuit. Am I clear?”“Crystal.”Filled with fear, Dr. Ben hastily left the room, leaving Dax and Carmen in an awkward atmosphere.“I want a DNA test,” Carmen mumbled as she stared away from Dax.With both of them in an emotional state, it got awfully quiet for a while. Then Dax rested back in his chair and covered his face with his hands before sighing
In the midst of the calmness inside the living room, there was distress in Mr. and Mrs. Smith's faces as they waited patiently for Hunter to call.“What's going on here? Did something bad happen?” Mr. Wilson asked when he walked into the living room and saw his daughter's worried expression and his son-in-law's deadly gaze.“That's what we are trying to find out.” Mrs. Smith replied as she looked at her father's concerned face.“Then why do you guys look so stressed?”“Because it's about Carmen.”“Kiddo? What could she have possibly done to have you both trouble? Is this about her fainting? Did you call her to find out if she is okay?”“I did, Dad. She is fine. At least that's what Dax told me.”“If Kiddo is well, then shouldn't you guys be happy?”Since Mrs. Smith didn't know how to respond to her father's question, she stared away from him and
The sunlight that shone through the office window faded slowly as Liam sat behind his desk with his eyes focused on his phone screen as he stared at the last message he sent to Carmen."She read it, so why hasn't she replied yet," Liam frustratingly whispered. After another three minutes of staring at his phone, he leaned back in his seat and gazed at the ceiling before letting out a deep sigh."I thought giving her space will help her realize that we belong together. But now, I think that she is drifting even further away from me. She can't be serious about us being over, right?" Liam mumbled as stressful thoughts crowded his mind.Suddenly his heart clenched with dread, and he felt a flutter of panic when reality hit him in the head and knocked some sense into him."Damn it. I am losing her. I can't lose her!" Liam muttered as he grabbed his car key and phone. Then he rushed out of his office and kept running until he reached the parking l
The night air grew harsher as Liam slowly got up from the ground and stood to his feet while suppressing his body from shivering from the cold.“Carmen is pregnant and it's mine?” Liam asked with his gaze fixed on Roman’s murderous eyes.“Hunter, level him to where he belongs!” Roman emotionlessly said. With soulless eyes and tight fist, Hunter rushed over to Liam and viciously threw a punch which hit between Liam’s waist and rib cage, causing him to fall to his knees while coughing out blood. His hands then tightly wrapped around his stomach as he swallowed the pain and restrained his lips from letting out a moan.“That’s better.” Roman mockingly said.As anger welled up in his chest, Liam caged it and lifted his head to gaze at Roman. Then he slowly fought back his pain and stood to his feet.“I know that I messed up with Carmen, and I am deeply sorry for my actions. But I am ready to be the man your daughter deserves if you will just give

When Freddie brought the car to a stop, he stared back, saw that Liam was sleeping, and faintly smiled as he thought, 'Sir just arrived in the country from a business trip, and yet he didn't hesitate when Miss Smith asked him to pick up Ethan. He really cares about young sir.'Realizing that the car wasn't moving, Liam raised his eyelids and asked, "We are here?""Yes, sir," Freddie said.Without uttering another word, Liam got down from the car and headed into the school building. When he got to Ethan's class and his teacher saw him, she smiled and said, "Ethan, your father is here."Keeping silent, Ethan walked over to Liam and mumbled, "Hello,"With a smile on his face, Liam sighed and thought, 'I have been in your life for one year now, and you won't call me 'father.' How long will it take to make you open up to me and believe that I'm not going to leave you.'Afterward, he extended his hand to Ethan, and not hesitating, he
The sound of her ringtone caused Carmen to set the pancake box on the kitchen counter. Then she picked up the phone, answered the call, and said, "Hey, mom." "Are you okay?" Mrs. Smith worriedly asked from the other end of the line. Confused by her mother's question, Carmen calmly uttered, "Why wouldn't I be?" "Well, Ummm… We were told that Ali was at the company yesterday?" "Seriously, you guys are still keeping tabs on me!" "No! Of course, not… Well, okay, yes we are. But not in the way that you think. Your dad and I were just checking in with Tracy this morning to find out how your first day went." At that moment, Carmen heard Mr. Smith say, "I told her not to call you!" Giggling faintly, the slight anger she felt slowly faded, and she said, "It's fine. We handle the situation pretty well, I think." "We?" Mrs. Smith asked, sounding curious. "Liam and I." "You guys are a
Keeping his eyes fixed on Carmen and Ethan as they stood by the car door, waiting on him, Liam walked over to them. When he was a step away from them, he stopped. Then Carmen met his eyes and said, "Ethan wanted us to wait out here for you.""Thank you, bud," Liam uttered, looking down at his son. Then he focused his gaze back at Carmen, and her face still bore no expression, making it hard for him to guess what she was thinking or how she felt.A few minutes later, as Freddie drove them out of the parking lot, the car was silent and continued to be even after he got on the main road. That bothered Ethan a lot, and he looked up at Liam on his left for a few seconds, and then looked to his right at Carmen before mumbling "I made a friend at school today.""Really! Bud, that's amazing!" Liam said with a look of pride in his eyes."Yeah, baby. What's your friend's name?" Carmen asked, unable to stop smiling. With an excited
The office was silent as Carmen stared coldly at Ali, wondering what she would say to her.At last, she lowered her brows and said, "We are not that close, so let's save the chit chat, and you can excuse yourself and leave.""Oh come on, Carm. Don't tell me you are still holding onto past grudges." Ali cunningly said, sluggishly relaxing back on the seat.Although Carmen didn't know where the conversation was heading, the last thing she wanted was to continue it.So she looked straight into Ali's eyes and said, "We are not doing this.""Doing what?" Ali asked with an innocent expression."I k
"Ding Dong!"Withdrawing his hand from on the doorbell, Liam waited patiently for a couple of seconds. Then he reached for the bell again, but the door suddenly opened, and Carmen stood in the doorway, staring at him."I hope I'm not too early," Liam mumbled, drawing his hand to his side."No. You are on time." Carmen said as she stepped aside for him to enter. After walking into the hallway, Liam gazed back and asked, "Where's Ethan?""He's having his breakfast," Carmen said, shutting the door.Afterward, she and Liam headed into the dining room together. When they arrived, and Liam sight rested on his son, his face lit up, and he excitedly uttered, "Hey bud. Ready for your first day of school?"Pouting, Ethan looked away from his cereal, stared at Carmen, and mumbled, "Mommy, why can't you be the one to take me to school.""We talked about this, honey. Your dad doesn't have much to do today, so he's
"Mommy," Ethan called out, looking at Carmen before staring down at her vibrating phone. Then he gently shook her arm until she finally raised her lashes and stared at him.Still feeling dizzy, a soft smile crept on her lips as she stared at her son's grey eyes and long lashes."What is it, baby?" Carmen whispered."Your phone is ringing," Ethan mumbled, drawing back on the bed as his mother sat up.It took her a second to fully awake. Then she stared down at her phone, picked it up, and answered the call."Good morning, mother," Carmen said, raffling Ethan's hair as he giggled faintly."I know it's early. But I and your father was discussing, and we thought since you have spent four months on that end, you are ready to take over the SM branch there." Mrs. Smith's voice echoed into her ear.Keeping silent, Carmen rested back on the headboard and thought, 'Four months? It's been that long already?'"What did Carm say?" Sh
For a while, Lina stared at her son, wondering if he was serious or not."I ready don't want to repeat what I said," Liam mumbled, gazing away from her. "You need to leave.""I am your mother," Lina whispered, clutching her fist."Remember the days in the darkroom, when I was screaming to be let out, I needed you to be my mother then or when Anthony and Levi left bruises on my skin and made me bleed, I wanted you to be my mother…""Liam…""There were so many instances that are needed you so desperately to realize that I am your son and put me first! But you didn't!""I'm…""I'm not going to be like you, mother. My child comes first even before the woman that brought me into this world, so you need to leave!"Fighting back tears, Carmen clapped her hand over her trembling lips as she stared at Liam with a touch of sadness in her eyes."I know my wrongs." Lina cried, not knowing what else to say.
Staring coldly at his grandfather, Liam scowled before gazing at his mother and saying, "It was supposed to be just you!""Well, when father found out that I was seeing Ethan, he wanted to meet him too, so he flew over to me for us to come together," Lina said, smiling at her son. However, that didn't change Liam's expression, and his eyes got colder the more he stared at his grandfather."Are you going to let us in?" Anthony asked, scowling at his grandson. The atmosphere was intense, and Carmen felt it as she approached Liam at the door."Mr. Davis?" Carmen mumbled, losing control over her expression for a second and frowning. Then she quickly curved her lips into a smile and calmly called out, "Liam, are you not going to step back?"Taking in a deep breath, Liam continued to give his grandfather an icy stare for a few minutes before allowing himself to step away from the door.Everything in him hated to see Anthony and
