Evelyn’s POV:
As I drove, my mind wandered back to the strange occurrences that had been unfolding around me. But I knew I was being prepared for something that was about to happen.
Why had Caleb sent me flowers and a romantic card, especially after what I had seen in my dream last night? It was all too coincidental, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that something terrible was about to happen. I needed just a little more clarity, a little more of a hint, and I would be ready for what was coming.
I knew I had to be more careful, to plan my next move and figure out how to deal with Caleb, especially since I didn’t know exactly what would happen. I had managed to control my emotions at the office, gathering myself together to avoid making a mess of things. I needed to show the company my capability, and I wasn’t ready to trade that for my personal emotions.
I was working perfectly fine despite the turmoil brewing inside me. My secretary had shown me some unattended emails, which I worked through diligently, trying to distract myself from the nagging feeling of unease.
Then there was Mr. Watt, who had requested a meeting regarding the offer our company had made to collaborate with theirs. I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to hold a formal meeting yet, so I asked my secretary to schedule it for the day after tomorrow. I needed time to clear my head and prepare. I needed to get the right tools to convince him to accept the offer. For me, getting him to sign the deal was of utmost importance.
His company was the second most successful and popular in the state. Winning a contract with them would be a triumphant start and a warm welcome to my dad’s company.
Just as I was beginning to feel like I had everything under control, my dad called. I clicked on the accept button, already knowing why he was calling. I started by assuring him I was fine, trying to sound as normal as possible, but my voice betrayed me.
He sighed deeply, and I could almost visualize the look on his face. I was certain he was distressed.
He said he had called to check on me and suggested I return home if I wasn’t feeling well. I reassured him I was fine, and he didn’t press further. He wished me well and hung up.
The thought of breaking the news of my project’s rejection to my dad brewed inside me. I felt incompetent, anticipating the disappointment he would feel. But I reminded myself that everything would be okay sooner or later. Brushing aside the negativity, I decided to take a break and walk to a nearby restaurant for lunch.
But as I sat down at a table, I realized I wasn’t hungry. The food I had ordered looked unappetizing, and the unease I felt refused to dissipate. I reached for a bottle of water and sat there for a while, sipping slowly. In the end, I left the restaurant without eating, deciding to head back home instead.
When I walked into my house, I was surprised by the sudden energy that surged through me. I felt strangely okay, as if nothing disturbing had happened. The only reason I had come home was to rest. I’d gotten little sleep the night before, and I was exhausted. I needed to recharge, knowing a new battle was about to unfold, and I had to win no matter how it comes.
I freshened up and lay down on my bed, feeling the softness of the mattress envelop me. I closed my eyes and let out a deep sigh, feeling my body relax.
By evening, I felt completely fine. I was in the sitting room, my eyes fixed on the laptop resting on my thighs, trying to craft a solid argument for Mr. Watt.
The flowers Caleb had sent still sat in the living room, a constant reminder of the mystery surrounding me. Once, when I glanced at them, a faint grin appeared on my lips.
An impulse made me stand, and I walked over to the flowers, picking them up. I untied the bouquet and took a closer look. That was the moment everything else made sense.
Inside the bouquet was a mini, almost micro, frame with a throwback picture of me. Caleb knew it was my favorite picture.
I scanned the frame thoroughly, and a nanocam fell out of it.
I stood for a while and flashed through the dream I had last night.
Everything became clear to me, this was the hint I needed and I was grateful.
I had expected anything from Caleb, yet I was still surprised. “So this was it?” I thought to myself.
I put everything back and went up to my room, placing the frame on the mirror beside my bed. I also hid the nanocam in my room.
Downstairs, my phone started ringing. I rushed to get it, hoping it was Leonard. I had decided to tell him everything and my plans, I needed to see him soon.
But as I got closer to my phone, I realized it was Caleb.
He had called to ask if he could visit me.
I hesitated for a moment, wondering if I should let him come. But then I remembered I was a step ahead of whatever he was planning. Energized by my discovery, I smiled to myself and I agreed. He said he would be at my place by 7:00.
I wanted Leonard’s company, but it could wait. I needed to see Caleb and observe his demeanor, especially since he had no idea I knew his filthy mission.
“Sure, come over,” I said, trying to sound casual, hiding the excitement building inside me. I was ready to play along, to see where Caleb’s plan would lead.
I hung up and quickly fixed the bouquet to make it look normal again, ensuring he wouldn’t suspect a thing.
EVELYN’S POV:It was almost time, and I was restless. Impatience gnawed at me as I anticipated his arrival. The dining table was set perfectly, and I had chosen a gown that complimented my figure beautifully. I looked almost perfect for the night, but I couldn't let Caleb get a hint of what I already knew.Soon, a loud knock echoed through the house. It was time to play the player.Opening the door, I found Caleb standing before me, a bright smile lighting up his face. I muttered a light greeting, and he responded with a warm hello. But his expression quickly shifted to one of surprise as he took in my appearance.I caught the glint of accomplishment in his eyes. Poor thing. He must think his flowers worked wonders on me, I mused inwardly.“Hey, I didn’t know we’d be going out, but I don’t mind. Anything for you,” he said, his warm smile unwavering.I met his gaze with a seductive smile. “No, we’re not going out. Isn’t it good if I decided to look good just for us to enjoy the night?”
EVELYN’S POV:As we sat down, Leonard revealed to me why my presentation had been initially rebuffed. He explained that there had been an intruding arm who had made sure to bring me down. But they were working towards fixing things. And he had also stepped in; that was why they were able to find out in the first place.I was grateful, but my mind was reeling with shock as I processed everything Leonard had just said.I listened intently, trying to make sense of it all. But as I looked at Leonard, I couldn't shake off the feeling that there was more to the story."What else is going on?" I asked, my eyes narrowing as I searched for any sign of deception.Leonard hesitated, and for a moment, I thought I saw a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes. But then he smiled, and his expression returned to normal."Nothing, Evelyn," he said. "That's all I've got for now. We'll get it sorted out."I nodded, believing in him.Several thoughts were racing through my mind."Why would anyone intervene,
Evelyn's POV He looked at me with a smirk on his face. “We both know he wouldn't. He is just Caleb, with no influence how much he would have dropped. No, I don't think so.”What he said made so much sense. But I was determined to find out who it was.I shifted his hand and jerked over. Now I was on his body and facing him. I made sure he felt the hot air I breathed, with my lips brushing his as I continued to speak. “You shouldn't have said goodbye when you weren't sure you wanted to go. Now see who's enjoying the moment.”“That was cutesy,” he said as he pulled me in with a kiss.It was passionate. He had just ignited the flames of desire in me. But I pulled out and left the bed.I glanced back and caught the look of surprise on his face—he must have wondered what was going on. I smiled, trying to appear composed.“Hey, stay calm. I just need to take a bath,” I said with a casual wave before strolling into the bathroom. When I returned, fresh and clean, Leonard's eyes immediately lo
EVELYN’S POV:Dana walked in with a broad smile on her face, and I greeted her warmly, a wide smile spreading across my own face. I noticed the questioning look in her eyes, but I ignored it. I stepped aside to let her in and followed closely behind as she entered. One thing I knew for certain was that I needed to keep an eye on every move she made.We sat on the couch in the den room, chatting for a bit and catching up on each other’s lives, though I knew we were both pretending. She commented on how nice it was to see me happy again, and I appreciated her kind words, even though I didn’t fully believe them.My dad walked in, greeted Dana with a warm smile, and exchanged a brief hug before leaving the room to give us some privacy. As our conversation continued, she brought up Caleb, but I quickly changed the subject. I wasn’t ready to discuss him yet. “If you could just slow it down—not now,” I thought to myself.Instead, I suggested we head to the kitchen to cook lunch together. The
EVELYN’S POV:"What's going on, Dad?" I asked demandingly, staring sternly into his eyes, waiting for him to say something comprehensible. He seemed confused and gave me a look as if he didn’t understand what I was talking about. The whole thing was making me impatient, and I felt like I was losing my mind."Cut this off, Dad. This isn’t like you. What did you do to Dana?""Oh, darling, I only spoke to her about a matter that didn’t sit well with her. And, let’s just say, it wouldn’t feel right in your presence either. But don’t worry—it’s harmless, darling. Now, can we do something else?""What can’t you say in my presence but can with Dana? What don’t you want me to know? Do we keep secrets now?" I inquired, already losing myself. Why wasn’t anyone saying anything to me?"My darling, you’re too young to understand, and you’ll only know when the time is right. And listen, I don’t ever want to hear you bring this up again," he said firmly. "Just know your dad loves you so much and wou
LEONARD’S POV.I sat at my desk in the private section of my office, going over some documents, but I lost focus when thoughts of Evelyn barged into my mind.I had planned to take her shopping after her meeting. She needed something classy and beautiful for her birthday. I couldn’t quite explain why I was so invested in it, but I felt compelled to make sure everything was perfect.I picked up my phone and began searching the web for birthday dress ideas.“Fuck,” I cursed under my breath, realizing how impatient I was being. We could go to the store together and find something that suited her better, rather than me scrolling through the internet.I set my phone aside and tried to get back to work.Moments later, my phone rang. I picked it up, expecting it to be one of my colleagues—or maybe even Evelyn. But instead, it was my watchman, Alex. For a while now, I had assigned him to ensure Evelyn’s safety and well-being wherever she went."Sir, I have some bad news," he said, his voice low
LEONARD’S POV:Just as I had concluded, the door sprang open, and the doctor walked in, holding a file that we were sure contained the test results. An impulse drove me out of my seat as I rushed to the doctor. “What is it, doctor?” I demanded. The doctor recognized me and tried to offer some respectful greetings, but I grabbed him by the arm, cutting him off. “What’s wrong with her?” I asked again, more insistently.“Mr. Henderson Leonard, you need to remain calm. She will be fine; it just needs some time before she fully recovers,” he said in a reassuring tone.I felt a bit relieved but still couldn’t quell the curiosity and anxiety gnawing at me. I was about to press him further when Evelyn’s father spoke up for the first time.“What happened, doctor?” he asked, his voice trembling.“She may have unknowingly ingested some poison, which her body is currently reacting to,” the doctor explained. Before he could elaborate, we were momentarily distracted by a nurse entering with a tray
LEONARD’S POV:My nerves were completely active, ready to indulge in aggressiveness. I slid my phone into my pocket and sat on a nearby chair. Beads of sweat gathered on my forehead as my thoughts swirled uncontrollably.I still couldn’t believe what was happening. Why would Aaron do such a thing? What was his motive? Who had sent him? How many more enemies does Evelyn have to face? These questions looped in my mind, my head buried in my hands. But one thought stayed longer than the rest—I had to find out what Aaron wanted.Aaron was known to be a good guy, according to Evelyn who would always stand by students who got bullied back at school. He was a senior prefect who considered everyone. What happened now and who sent him. They did have a relationship together with Evelyn so why would he even want her to lose. But time will tell soon.I concluded.I stood abruptly, deciding to check on Evelyn. Walking through the hallway toward her room, I passed a sign that read EMERGENCY UNIT, a
Happily Ever After“Yes, I do,” Evelyn said, tears streaming down her face as she stood beside the love of her life, Leonard. The sun set behind them, casting golden hues across the beach, where a small crowd of family and close friends clapped in celebration. Evelyn’s heart raced as the pastor, with a gentle grin, declared, “By the power vested in me by the state, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride now.”Leonard didn’t hesitate. He pulled Evelyn close, capturing her lips in a deep, passionate kiss. His mother playfully covered her face, peeking through her fingers, while the crowd cheered and laughed.“Grandma, I want to join Mummy and Daddy!” Ryan and River said in unison, their excitement contagious. Without waiting for permission, they ran to the couple, joining them on the floor. Evelyn and Leonard embraced the kids, laughing as they all danced together when the music began to play.Though the ceremony was intimate, the guests in attendance were people o
Evelyn's POVIt was Leonard, he was carrying the baby, the excitement in his face before I slept off had vanished. “ Babe, what's going on?” I asked. But he didn't say anything, his head was just bowed down slightly, as if finding answers from the baby.My mind started reeling with several thoughts, I knew he had gone to see my dad, did he not like the child?“ Say something.” I said desperately.“ I'm sorry Evelyn.” He said but then paused again, his lips shaking. The door of the room opened again, and the Caregiver walked in.She was also cold. I became confused.“ Was anything wrong with my baby? I asked myself.“ Babe you have to be strong, I'm sorry Mr Wyatt. He didn't complete his sentence when I realized what he was trying to say.My dad was dead, Mr Wyatt was dead. My life was over, literally what came to my mind.“ Noo, no, say something else.” I said, tears streaming down my face.It became difficult to breathe. I was choking on air. I wept bitterly on the bed, Leonard trie
EVELYN’S POV:It had been over two months since the failed surgery. My dad had been living on what felt like a miracle ever since. Each day with him was a gift, a fragile thread holding him here. Leonard, Mia, and the caregiver had been the pillars of support I leaned on during those challenging months.Ryan and River visited often, bringing small moments of joy, but today wasn’t about my dad or them. Today, it was my turn on the hospital bed. Inside the labor room, I lay ready—or as ready as anyone could be—to meet the life I had carried for nine months. The pain I felt was incomparable, beyond anything I’d ever imagined.I clung tightly to Leonard’s hand. He stood beside me, his calm voice trying to pierce through my haze of agony. “You’re doing so well, babe. Just a little more.”A doctor—or maybe a nurse or midwife—entered the room, her expression calm yet purposeful. I knew it was time. She held a syringe, walking briskly toward me.“Hello, madam. Just relax and stay calm. You ca
LEONARD’S POV:Then I turned my attention back to driving. Even though this was supposed to be exciting news on a normal day, we couldn't celebrate it."I'm hungry," Evelyn said. I gave her a questioning look.I turned the car onto another route as we started looking for a restaurant. We eventually found one and walked inside. The meal was nice, and I realized I was also hungry. After eating, we didn’t leave immediately; we stayed for a while to relax. Then a call came to my phone. I took it out and saw it was a new number. Surprisingly, I hesitated before answering, wondering who it could be.“Good day, sir,” a voice said on the other end.I tried to recognize the voice but couldn’t.“I’m from the press hub,” the voice continued. My interest piqued. “What’s the situation?” I asked urgently.“We have three offers right now,” he said.A wave of excitement washed over me for a moment.“Alright, I need their details immediately,” I said and hung up.I turned to speak to Evelyn, only to r
LEONARD’S POV:"It's the court hearing; it's tomorrow. It had just slipped my mind," I said to her, my words unorganized."I'm famished," she said, ignoring the information I had just shared, as if she hadn't asked in the first place."Here you go," I said, serving her meal."Smells so good," she said, sniffing the food while closing her eyes.We had a quick breakfast. Time flew by, and before I knew it, it was the next morning. When I woke up, Evelyn was sleeping peacefully beside me on the bed. The only unusual thing was her large baby bump, which I had grown used to."Good morning, baby," I whispered in her ear and kissed her before getting out of bed.I went to the kitchen and poured myself a glass of water. After finishing it, I started making coffee for us. I was almost done when a familiar voice interrupted me."Good morning," Evelyn said with a bright smile. Even though we were indoors, she shone like the sun.I moved toward her, kissed her cheek playfully, and then kissed her
LEONARD’S POV:Her checkups and scan didn’t take much time. The baby was fine and Evelyn was in perfect condition. Though the doctor recommended so much rest. Afterward, she requested to see the twins.“But they had left only yesterday!” I protested. The twins had become a big part of our lives, visiting from time to time. Even though they stayed at their grandparents’ house, their bond with Evelyn remained strong. They were so fond of her that they never wanted to leave whenever they came over. The feeling was mutual.“But I miss them,” she said, pouting her lips. “We won’t stay long; it’ll just be a brief visit.”“I know, but the doctor said you need rest. You should get some,” I tried to convince her. But Evelyn wasn’t one to give up easily.Eventually, she succeeded in convincing me instead. I called the kids' grandparents on our way to inform them of our visit. As soon as we arrived, the kids ran out to welcome us. I scooped both of them into my arms and lifted them high. Only t
LEONARD’S POV:I adjusted the car seat and pulled her toward me. She tried to pull away, but she couldn’t match my strength.“Leave me alone. I hate you,” she said, hitting me violently. But I kept my hold firm on her. After a moment of crying and consoling, she eventually calmed down.“Evelyn, I promise everything will be fine,” I said reassuringly.“No, nothing is fine. He’s getting worse every day,” she replied, her voice frail. She clung to me and sobbed gently. “I don’t want anything to happen to him.”“Of course not,” I answered. When she was calm enough, I started the car and we drove to the hospital.“How are you, Evelyn?” my mom asked as soon as we stepped inside the hospital room. The caregiver was sitting on a chair, while my mom sat beside Mr. Wyatt on his bed. He was awake now, though he looked so weak and pale. He wasn't the Mr Wyatt I knew months back anymore. We settled in and tried to cheer Mr. Wyatt up. We had a good time that evening. It was the first time I’d seen
LEONARD’S POV:“I miss you so much,” I said to her, placing a kiss on her cheek and then her forehead.“And you had to do this?” she said mockingly to me.“Of course, I’ll do it anytime,” I replied. She giggled and hugged me again.“Good afternoon, sir,” her secretary walked up to us and greeted me.I responded, and then we made preparations to leave. Evelyn and I stayed entwined with each other the entire time. We all boarded the jet and took off.Evelyn’s face shifted slightly, and before I could ask her what was wrong, she said, “How is my dad?”I kept quiet for a moment, thinking of how to respond. “He’s steady for now,” I lied. I couldn’t bring myself to tell her the truth—not yet.“I can’t wait to see him,” she said happily.“Sure, you’ll see him soon,” I replied, trying to sound confident.Even though she appeared happy, her face was still marked with dark circles, and I could see through her mask. She was deeply worried about her dad.“My mom is also at the hospital; she came
LEONARD’S POV:“I figured you haven’t had time to eat,” she said, noticing the amusement on my face.As I ate, we had a little conversation, and then she asked, “How do you intend to break the news to Evelyn?”I slightly choked on the food and let out a faint cough. I was frozen for a moment. It was still a question that lingered in my mind, unanswered.“I don't know. I’ve thought about it several times, but I can’t seem to find a good way to say it to her,” I explained. My mom placed her hand on my shoulder and said, “Just take it easy on yourself.”“Thank you, Mom,” I replied and continued eating my meal. Then my phone rang suddenly. I quickly picked it up without even checking the caller.“Good afternoon, sir,” the voice on the other end said respectfully.“The project has been approved. I just received an email—have you seen it yet?” he asked.I’d been so busy I hadn’t even thought about work. I had almost forgotten I was waiting for an approval. This was good news. It was a multi
