LEONARD’S POV:
Just as I had concluded, the door sprang open, and the doctor walked in, holding a file that we were sure contained the test results.
An impulse drove me out of my seat as I rushed to the doctor. “What is it, doctor?” I demanded.
The doctor recognized me and tried to offer some respectful greetings, but I grabbed him by the arm, cutting him off. “What’s wrong with her?” I asked again, more insistently.
“Mr. Henderson Leonard, you need to remain calm. She will be fine; it just needs some time before she fully recovers,” he said in a reassuring tone.
I felt a bit relieved but still couldn’t quell the curiosity and anxiety gnawing at me. I was about to press him further when Evelyn’s father spoke up for the first time.
“What happened, doctor?” he asked, his voice trembling.
“She may have unknowingly ingested some poison, which her body is currently reacting to,” the doctor explained. Before he could elaborate, we were momentarily distracted by a nurse entering with a tray of medications and some other tools.
“As I was saying,” the doctor continued, “the substance is spreading through her body and affecting her nerves, which is limiting adequate blood flow. If the case had been reported earlier, things might have gone more smoothly. We’ll need to run some scans and tests to identify the exact substance and determine the right treatment. For now, here are some medications,” he said, gesturing toward the nurse, who began preparing them.
He walked towards the nurses and start to fix and work on some stuff there.
I stood frozen, my eyes widening in fear. My mind reeled as the doctor’s words echoed in my ears. Poison? How was that even possible? I felt as though I’d been punched in the gut. My thoughts raced with questions, fears, and a growing fury.
Whoever was responsible for this—whether it was an accident or intentional—would pay dearly for every ounce of pain Evelyn endured.
I turned to look at Evelyn's father. My heart ached for him. His eyes were wide with shock and fear, tears brimming as he stared at his unconscious daughter. The pain etched on his face was unbearable to witness.
The doctor's words kept replaying in my mind, but I couldn’t fully process them. I felt like I was in a daze, as if the world around me had slowed to a crawl.
For a moment, it felt as though everything had paused. The only sound I could hear was the rapid thudding of my heartbeat.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself. I need to think clearly, I told myself. Getting angry won’t help Evelyn. I need to work and my emotions at the moment, they don't help me think fast.
I turned to the doctor, trying to ask questions, but my voice caught in my throat.
Evelyn’s father was the one to break the silence. His voice trembled as he spoke. “What…what kind of poison?” he asked, his eyes pleading for answers.
The doctor hesitated before responding. “We’re not sure yet. We need to run further tests to determine the exact substance. Do you have any idea what she consumed earlier today?”
A surge of anger and frustration welled up inside me. How could this have happened? Who could have done this to Evelyn?
I glanced around the room, taking in the scene. Evelyn's father sat beside me, his gaze fixed on his daughter. The doctor stood across from us, his expression somber. And Evelyn…Evelyn lay unconscious on the bed, her life hanging by a thread.
“Oh, my Goodness.” I groaned silently, overwhelmed by helplessness.
A lump formed in my throat as I stared at her. I had to save her. I would do anything, everything, to ensure her recovery.
Suddenly, I thought about the call I’d received earlier from my guard. My mind churned with questions. Could there be a connection? Or was this just a coincidence? I didn’t have the answers, but I knew I had to stay patient and focus on the immediate crisis.
I sat back down, resting my head in my hands, lost in deep thoughts, they were uncontrollable, making me sick.
I turned to Evelyn's father, attempting to reassure him. “We’ll get through this,” I said firmly. “We’ll find out who did this, and we’ll make sure they pay.”
He nodded, tears spilling from his eyes. “She had coffee this morning,” he said, his voice trembling. “I made it myself as a special treat for her birthday. It was her mother’s favorite recipe. She drank it in the car on our way to the office, while I drove, just the two of us.”
His words revealed his fear and guilt, but I knew we’d uncover the truth soon enough.
“It’s okay, Mr. Wyatt,” I said, trying to comfort him. “Everything will be fine.”
He nodded again, his gratitude evident despite his anguish. “Thank you, Leonard. Thank you for being here for us. I’m so grateful,” he whispered.
I nodded, a newfound determination settling over me. I would do whatever it took to save Evelyn.
As we sat there, Evelyn’s phone began to ring. Her father retrieved it from her bag, which he had brought along to the hospital.
The caller was Dana. Her father answered, but before he could speak, Dana’s excited voice filled the room. “Hey, birthday queen! See you in a few hours! Your girl is super, super ready to party with you tonight!”
He said nothing in response. Instead, he clicked the voicemail button and hung up.
I stood up and walked out of the room hoping for some fresh Air outside.
As I walked to the hallway path, I took out my phone, searched through my call logs and dialed my guard.
I wanted to make enquiries on our previous discussion.
By the second ring I had him on the phone.
“ Sir “ his voice came right away.
“ Have you gotten his information?” I asked
“ Yes sir. I will forward it to your mail immediately.”
“Ok.” I said and hung up.
Just in a minute I got a beep, and checked on the screen.
My jaw dropped dead, my fist clenched in anger accompanied with shock, as I looked at the information staring back at me.
LEONARD’S POV:My nerves were completely active, ready to indulge in aggressiveness. I slid my phone into my pocket and sat on a nearby chair. Beads of sweat gathered on my forehead as my thoughts swirled uncontrollably.I still couldn’t believe what was happening. Why would Aaron do such a thing? What was his motive? Who had sent him? How many more enemies does Evelyn have to face? These questions looped in my mind, my head buried in my hands. But one thought stayed longer than the rest—I had to find out what Aaron wanted.Aaron was known to be a good guy, according to Evelyn who would always stand by students who got bullied back at school. He was a senior prefect who considered everyone. What happened now and who sent him. They did have a relationship together with Evelyn so why would he even want her to lose. But time will tell soon.I concluded.I stood abruptly, deciding to check on Evelyn. Walking through the hallway toward her room, I passed a sign that read EMERGENCY UNIT, a
Evelyn's POV: As I slowly opened my eyes, I could hear a faint beeping sound. It grew louder as my vision adjusted, and I realized I was in a hospital room. My hand was connected to a drip stand, and my dad sat beside me, his head buried in his hands. I tried to speak, but my voice came out as a whisper.“Dad,” I croaked, my throat dry.He looked up, and our eyes met. A tear rolled down his cheek, and his face was etched with concern.“It’s okay, Dad. I’m fine,” I whispered, trying to sound stronger than I felt.He took my hand in his and moved closer. “You’ve been unconscious for a while,” he said, his voice shaking. “We were so worried. I’m just glad you’re awake.”I tried to recall what had happened, but my memory was hazy. Then, like a lightning flash, I remembered. I’d felt dizzy during a meeting, and everything had gone dark. My head felt heavy, as though I hadn’t slept in days.Just as I opened my mouth to ask Dad what the doctors had said, he mentioned Leonard. He told me Le
EVELYN'S POV:As I sat on the couch, I couldn’t shake off the feeling of unease. Curiosity gnawed at me, and my mind raced with questions. What are they hiding from me?The uncertainty fueled my frustration and anger. If something serious was happening, why wasn’t I being informed?I couldn’t help myself anymore. I needed answers. I need to know what happened to me.That isn't too much of a request.“Dad, please,” I said, trying to sound calm, though my voice betrayed me. “Someone tell me what’s going on.”My dad stood and placed a hand on my shoulder. “Relax, dear. You just need to rest and eat something. We can talk later.”But his words didn’t reassure me. I turned to Leonard, who was trying hard to appear composed, though I could see through his forced smile. I gave him a soft questioning look.“Leonard,” I asked, my voice firmer, “can you please tell me what’s going on? Don't you think I deserve to know?”Leonard smiled softly and placed a hand on my arm. “Everything is fine, Ev
EVELYN'S POV:I was surprised to see a saxophonist playing birthday songs. I instantly knew the surprise was from Leonard. A series of boxed gifts lay neatly packed on the table. Overwhelmed with joy, I jumped on him, giving him a tight hug.“Thank you so much!” I exclaimed, tears welling up in my eyes. Everything was so beautiful and alluring. We spent the next few minutes unboxing the gifts, and I was amazed at how thoughtful they were. Leonard had truly outdone himself. No words could express my gratitude. I looked into his eyes and said, “Thank you, Leonard. This means so much to me.”Just then, there was a knock on the door, and my dad entered without waiting for a response. His face showed surprise at the sight of all the gifts. I quickly told him they were from Leonard, and he thanked him graciously. But then, my dad asked Leonard to excuse us. Once Leonard left, my dad looked at me seriously and asked, “What’s going on between you and Leonard?” His voice was filled with emotio
EVELYN'S POV:"Happy birthday, Evelyn," Leonard whispered in my ear.I stood in front of the Bentley Continental GT, stunned and speechless. It was everything I’d ever dreamed of. Overwhelmed, I walked to the car, took the keys from one of the guards, and ignited the engine. The smooth hum sent a thrill through me, and I screamed a thank you from inside before stepping out.The car was stunning, a perfect reflection of my long-held wish. I couldn’t hold back my excitement and jumped into Leonard’s arms, wrapping myself around his neck. "Thank you so much!" I exclaimed, tears of joy streaming down my face. Overcome with emotion, I kissed him, and he deepened the kiss, making the world around us fade for a moment. He grabbed me by butt and pulled me as if going inside his body. And the kiss we shared deppened like it was never ending.Cheers and congratulations snapped me back to reality as the crowd clapped around us. Leonard laughed and hugged me tightly. "You're welcome, Evelyn. I’m
LEONARD'S POV:As she hugged me, her warmth wrapped around me like a soothing balm. Her body was soft yet strong, and I felt an inexplicable calm in her presence. I didn’t want to leave—I didn’t need to—but I had to. The longer I stayed, the more drawn I became to her. The attraction was undeniable, yet it made me uneasy. When I looked into her eyes, they held a serene, unreadable expression. Was she as calm as she appeared, or was there something she was holding back? I wished, more than anything, that I could take away all her troubles, that I could shield her from everything weighing her down.“Goodbye, Leonard,” she said softly, the words pulling me out of my spiraling thoughts. She repeated them as if trying to cement the finality of my departure.I nodded, forcing myself to return to reality. “Goodbye, Evelyn,” I managed, my voice barely above a whisper. I turned and left, each step away from her feeling heavier than the last. When I reached the garage, I glanced at the car I ha
EVELYN'S POV:As I walked into my house, I couldn't help but think about Aaron and what Leonard had told me. Questions about why Aaron would do something like that filled my heart. Life had a way of teaching harsh lessons, and this was one of them—be careful with people, and don't trust too easily. But I didn’t want to dwell on it for long. I had shared an amazing time with Leonard the night before, and I didn’t want anything to ruin those memories. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, forcing Aaron's thoughts out of my mind.Instead, I focused on how Leonard had surprised me with the car and how we had spent the day together, laughing and joking. The way he looked at me, with so much care and affection, lingered in my mind. He made me feel like I was the only person in the world who mattered. I hadn’t felt this way about anyone before, but I could tell when I loved someone and when they cared for me in return. I couldn’t hide it anymore—I loved Leonard.I wasn’t going to let thou
EVELYN'S POV:At the first ring, Leonard picked up the call. His calm voice greeted me, and I wasted no time asking if he could come to my place for the night, whenever he was done with what he was doing.“As it pleases her majesty,” he teased, his tone light and playful.I explained to him that I was heading to see my dad but reassured him that my place would remain unlocked. It took so much discipline not to share the good news about my project approval with him right away. I wanted to tell him face-to-face and see his reaction.Once I was ready, I stepped out of my room, eager to meet my dad. However, as I entered his house, it was eerily quiet. Confusion began to take hold.“Dad?” I called out, but there was no response.I headed to his bedroom door, only to find it locked. My confusion quickly turned into fear.“Dad?” I called again, my voice more urgent as I rushed back to the living room.Just then, the lights flickered on, and there he was, standing with a bottle of wine in hi
Happily Ever After“Yes, I do,” Evelyn said, tears streaming down her face as she stood beside the love of her life, Leonard. The sun set behind them, casting golden hues across the beach, where a small crowd of family and close friends clapped in celebration. Evelyn’s heart raced as the pastor, with a gentle grin, declared, “By the power vested in me by the state, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride now.”Leonard didn’t hesitate. He pulled Evelyn close, capturing her lips in a deep, passionate kiss. His mother playfully covered her face, peeking through her fingers, while the crowd cheered and laughed.“Grandma, I want to join Mummy and Daddy!” Ryan and River said in unison, their excitement contagious. Without waiting for permission, they ran to the couple, joining them on the floor. Evelyn and Leonard embraced the kids, laughing as they all danced together when the music began to play.Though the ceremony was intimate, the guests in attendance were people o
Evelyn's POVIt was Leonard, he was carrying the baby, the excitement in his face before I slept off had vanished. “ Babe, what's going on?” I asked. But he didn't say anything, his head was just bowed down slightly, as if finding answers from the baby.My mind started reeling with several thoughts, I knew he had gone to see my dad, did he not like the child?“ Say something.” I said desperately.“ I'm sorry Evelyn.” He said but then paused again, his lips shaking. The door of the room opened again, and the Caregiver walked in.She was also cold. I became confused.“ Was anything wrong with my baby? I asked myself.“ Babe you have to be strong, I'm sorry Mr Wyatt. He didn't complete his sentence when I realized what he was trying to say.My dad was dead, Mr Wyatt was dead. My life was over, literally what came to my mind.“ Noo, no, say something else.” I said, tears streaming down my face.It became difficult to breathe. I was choking on air. I wept bitterly on the bed, Leonard trie
EVELYN’S POV:It had been over two months since the failed surgery. My dad had been living on what felt like a miracle ever since. Each day with him was a gift, a fragile thread holding him here. Leonard, Mia, and the caregiver had been the pillars of support I leaned on during those challenging months.Ryan and River visited often, bringing small moments of joy, but today wasn’t about my dad or them. Today, it was my turn on the hospital bed. Inside the labor room, I lay ready—or as ready as anyone could be—to meet the life I had carried for nine months. The pain I felt was incomparable, beyond anything I’d ever imagined.I clung tightly to Leonard’s hand. He stood beside me, his calm voice trying to pierce through my haze of agony. “You’re doing so well, babe. Just a little more.”A doctor—or maybe a nurse or midwife—entered the room, her expression calm yet purposeful. I knew it was time. She held a syringe, walking briskly toward me.“Hello, madam. Just relax and stay calm. You ca
LEONARD’S POV:Then I turned my attention back to driving. Even though this was supposed to be exciting news on a normal day, we couldn't celebrate it."I'm hungry," Evelyn said. I gave her a questioning look.I turned the car onto another route as we started looking for a restaurant. We eventually found one and walked inside. The meal was nice, and I realized I was also hungry. After eating, we didn’t leave immediately; we stayed for a while to relax. Then a call came to my phone. I took it out and saw it was a new number. Surprisingly, I hesitated before answering, wondering who it could be.“Good day, sir,” a voice said on the other end.I tried to recognize the voice but couldn’t.“I’m from the press hub,” the voice continued. My interest piqued. “What’s the situation?” I asked urgently.“We have three offers right now,” he said.A wave of excitement washed over me for a moment.“Alright, I need their details immediately,” I said and hung up.I turned to speak to Evelyn, only to r
LEONARD’S POV:"It's the court hearing; it's tomorrow. It had just slipped my mind," I said to her, my words unorganized."I'm famished," she said, ignoring the information I had just shared, as if she hadn't asked in the first place."Here you go," I said, serving her meal."Smells so good," she said, sniffing the food while closing her eyes.We had a quick breakfast. Time flew by, and before I knew it, it was the next morning. When I woke up, Evelyn was sleeping peacefully beside me on the bed. The only unusual thing was her large baby bump, which I had grown used to."Good morning, baby," I whispered in her ear and kissed her before getting out of bed.I went to the kitchen and poured myself a glass of water. After finishing it, I started making coffee for us. I was almost done when a familiar voice interrupted me."Good morning," Evelyn said with a bright smile. Even though we were indoors, she shone like the sun.I moved toward her, kissed her cheek playfully, and then kissed her
LEONARD’S POV:Her checkups and scan didn’t take much time. The baby was fine and Evelyn was in perfect condition. Though the doctor recommended so much rest. Afterward, she requested to see the twins.“But they had left only yesterday!” I protested. The twins had become a big part of our lives, visiting from time to time. Even though they stayed at their grandparents’ house, their bond with Evelyn remained strong. They were so fond of her that they never wanted to leave whenever they came over. The feeling was mutual.“But I miss them,” she said, pouting her lips. “We won’t stay long; it’ll just be a brief visit.”“I know, but the doctor said you need rest. You should get some,” I tried to convince her. But Evelyn wasn’t one to give up easily.Eventually, she succeeded in convincing me instead. I called the kids' grandparents on our way to inform them of our visit. As soon as we arrived, the kids ran out to welcome us. I scooped both of them into my arms and lifted them high. Only t
LEONARD’S POV:I adjusted the car seat and pulled her toward me. She tried to pull away, but she couldn’t match my strength.“Leave me alone. I hate you,” she said, hitting me violently. But I kept my hold firm on her. After a moment of crying and consoling, she eventually calmed down.“Evelyn, I promise everything will be fine,” I said reassuringly.“No, nothing is fine. He’s getting worse every day,” she replied, her voice frail. She clung to me and sobbed gently. “I don’t want anything to happen to him.”“Of course not,” I answered. When she was calm enough, I started the car and we drove to the hospital.“How are you, Evelyn?” my mom asked as soon as we stepped inside the hospital room. The caregiver was sitting on a chair, while my mom sat beside Mr. Wyatt on his bed. He was awake now, though he looked so weak and pale. He wasn't the Mr Wyatt I knew months back anymore. We settled in and tried to cheer Mr. Wyatt up. We had a good time that evening. It was the first time I’d seen
LEONARD’S POV:“I miss you so much,” I said to her, placing a kiss on her cheek and then her forehead.“And you had to do this?” she said mockingly to me.“Of course, I’ll do it anytime,” I replied. She giggled and hugged me again.“Good afternoon, sir,” her secretary walked up to us and greeted me.I responded, and then we made preparations to leave. Evelyn and I stayed entwined with each other the entire time. We all boarded the jet and took off.Evelyn’s face shifted slightly, and before I could ask her what was wrong, she said, “How is my dad?”I kept quiet for a moment, thinking of how to respond. “He’s steady for now,” I lied. I couldn’t bring myself to tell her the truth—not yet.“I can’t wait to see him,” she said happily.“Sure, you’ll see him soon,” I replied, trying to sound confident.Even though she appeared happy, her face was still marked with dark circles, and I could see through her mask. She was deeply worried about her dad.“My mom is also at the hospital; she came
LEONARD’S POV:“I figured you haven’t had time to eat,” she said, noticing the amusement on my face.As I ate, we had a little conversation, and then she asked, “How do you intend to break the news to Evelyn?”I slightly choked on the food and let out a faint cough. I was frozen for a moment. It was still a question that lingered in my mind, unanswered.“I don't know. I’ve thought about it several times, but I can’t seem to find a good way to say it to her,” I explained. My mom placed her hand on my shoulder and said, “Just take it easy on yourself.”“Thank you, Mom,” I replied and continued eating my meal. Then my phone rang suddenly. I quickly picked it up without even checking the caller.“Good afternoon, sir,” the voice on the other end said respectfully.“The project has been approved. I just received an email—have you seen it yet?” he asked.I’d been so busy I hadn’t even thought about work. I had almost forgotten I was waiting for an approval. This was good news. It was a multi
