EVELYN'S POV:
As I sat on the couch, I couldn’t shake off the feeling of unease. Curiosity gnawed at me, and my mind raced with questions.
What are they hiding from me?
The uncertainty fueled my frustration and anger. If something serious was happening, why wasn’t I being informed?
I couldn’t help myself anymore. I needed answers. I need to know what happened to me.
That isn't too much of a request.
“Dad, please,” I said, trying to sound calm, though my voice betrayed me. “Someone tell me what’s going on.”
My dad stood and placed a hand on my shoulder. “Relax, dear. You just need to rest and eat something. We can talk later.”
But his words didn’t reassure me. I turned to Leonard, who was trying hard to appear composed, though I could see through his forced smile.
I gave him a soft questioning look.
“Leonard,” I asked, my voice firmer, “can you please tell me what’s going on? Don't you think I deserve to know?”
Leonard smiled softly and placed a hand on my arm. “Everything is fine, Evelyn. You just need to rest. We’ll talk later.”
His response mirrored my dad’s, as though they had rehearsed it, my frustration grew.
“Gosh, somebody speak to me please.” I nagged.
My dad nodded in agreement with Leonard then excused himself to “refresh.” Leonard followed him out of the room, the door closing behind them, leaving me alone.
I could hear their soft voices from the porch and wondered what they were discussing. A pang of fear gripped me, “what had happened? Was I with a deadly disease?” I questioned helplessly. But I pushed it aside. My dad would never hurt me, and I trusted Leonard—though I didn’t want to admit it.
But right now I need no more proof that Leonard was genuine.
I stood from the couch, deciding to distract myself by making something to eat. But as I entered the kitchen, I hesitated, unsure where to start, not even from a choice of food. I just hovered around.
The door opened, and Leonard walked in, a smile lighting up his face.
“What are you doing?” he asked playfully. “You’re not allowed to lift a finger until further notice. not until you're completely healed.”
“But I'm healed, I feel strong, not like I'm bedridden.” I said to him,
“No ma'am, I insist. Why do you think I'm here, to let you stress? No.” he questioned and answered simply.
“Alright then, I'm hungry, Mr. Chef,” I said lightly.
“Then let me serve you,” he said, slipping into an apron.
He picked up a knife and held it as if he held a pen, “Ready to take orders, miss.” He gestures towards me.
I laughed. “I just want something simple.”
Leonard nodded and began cooking. We chatted as he worked, and I felt my worries slowly fade. With Leonard, everything always seemed better.
Still, thoughts of Dana and Caleb crept into my mind. Why hadn’t anyone mentioned them? Surely, they knew about what had happened. “Why didn't they check on me, wouldn't this have been a chance for them, whatever.”
I pushed the thoughts aside. “I’ll deal with them later,” I muttered to myself.
Leonard approached me after serving the meal. “Evelyn,” he began cautiously, “ about the hospital test results.”
My heart sank. I wasn’t ready for this.
“You were poisoned,” he said, his voice heavy. “It was food poisoning. but you're fine now, the doctors made sure you're.” He added trying to make me calm.
My breath caught. “Poisoned?”
“We don’t know who did it yet, but we’ll find out. I need you to trust me.”
The revelation hit me like a storm. My mind raced. Who could have done this?
Whoever did that was smart, I only had coffee in the morning and my father gave me that and obviously he wouldn't poison me.
Leonard noticed my reaction and held my arm gently. “It’s going to be okay, Evelyn,” he said, his tone steady. “We’ll get through this together.”
I nodded, trying to calm myself. We ate the meal—steamed cauliflower, vegetable rice, and grilled chicken. It was delicious, but my thoughts were elsewhere.
Leonard excused himself to shower. I laid out clothes for him—ones I’d bought for Caleb before everything changed.
As I kept the clothes I looked at them and had a little memory of Caleb and I, I cursed in frustration, how I did not see his true lies then.
Later, we went to the living room and debated what movie to watch. We finally settled on a Hollywood romance.
As the movie played, I couldn’t shake the feeling Leonard was withholding something. Whenever I pressed him, he’d just smile and say, “Nothing.” but it doesn't feel like anything.
There was more he needed to reveal, but the fear of hurting me kept him.
I could tell, it took him so much courage to disclose the test results.
Halfway through the movie, a knock sounded at the door. Leonard answered, revealing my dad.
“Hey, Dad,” I greeted, standing to hug him.
He smiled warmly. “Just came to check on you, dear. I’m fine, just tired. I think I’ll head to bed now.”
I nodded. “Goodnight, Dad.”
He left, and Leonard and I returned to the movie. But as the room darkened, my eyelids grew heavy, and I drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, sunlight streamed through the curtains, waking me. I stretched and glanced around for Leonard, but he wasn’t in the room.
Moments later, the door opened, and Leonard walked in, carrying a cup of coffee.
“How are you feeling today?” he asked, handing me the cup.
“Super fantastic,” I replied, smiling.
He leaned in and kissed my forehead. “Good. Let’s make today special. I owe you a proper birthday celebration.”
Just as he spoke, the doorbell rang.
I glanced at the clock—7:26 a.m. “Who could that be?” I wondered aloud. It couldn't be dad cause he wakes by 8.
Leonard went to answer the door, and I followed closely behind.
When the door opened, I gasped in shock at the package standing before us.
EVELYN'S POV:I was surprised to see a saxophonist playing birthday songs. I instantly knew the surprise was from Leonard. A series of boxed gifts lay neatly packed on the table. Overwhelmed with joy, I jumped on him, giving him a tight hug.“Thank you so much!” I exclaimed, tears welling up in my eyes. Everything was so beautiful and alluring. We spent the next few minutes unboxing the gifts, and I was amazed at how thoughtful they were. Leonard had truly outdone himself. No words could express my gratitude. I looked into his eyes and said, “Thank you, Leonard. This means so much to me.”Just then, there was a knock on the door, and my dad entered without waiting for a response. His face showed surprise at the sight of all the gifts. I quickly told him they were from Leonard, and he thanked him graciously. But then, my dad asked Leonard to excuse us. Once Leonard left, my dad looked at me seriously and asked, “What’s going on between you and Leonard?” His voice was filled with emotio
EVELYN'S POV:"Happy birthday, Evelyn," Leonard whispered in my ear.I stood in front of the Bentley Continental GT, stunned and speechless. It was everything I’d ever dreamed of. Overwhelmed, I walked to the car, took the keys from one of the guards, and ignited the engine. The smooth hum sent a thrill through me, and I screamed a thank you from inside before stepping out.The car was stunning, a perfect reflection of my long-held wish. I couldn’t hold back my excitement and jumped into Leonard’s arms, wrapping myself around his neck. "Thank you so much!" I exclaimed, tears of joy streaming down my face. Overcome with emotion, I kissed him, and he deepened the kiss, making the world around us fade for a moment. He grabbed me by butt and pulled me as if going inside his body. And the kiss we shared deppened like it was never ending.Cheers and congratulations snapped me back to reality as the crowd clapped around us. Leonard laughed and hugged me tightly. "You're welcome, Evelyn. I’m
LEONARD'S POV:As she hugged me, her warmth wrapped around me like a soothing balm. Her body was soft yet strong, and I felt an inexplicable calm in her presence. I didn’t want to leave—I didn’t need to—but I had to. The longer I stayed, the more drawn I became to her. The attraction was undeniable, yet it made me uneasy. When I looked into her eyes, they held a serene, unreadable expression. Was she as calm as she appeared, or was there something she was holding back? I wished, more than anything, that I could take away all her troubles, that I could shield her from everything weighing her down.“Goodbye, Leonard,” she said softly, the words pulling me out of my spiraling thoughts. She repeated them as if trying to cement the finality of my departure.I nodded, forcing myself to return to reality. “Goodbye, Evelyn,” I managed, my voice barely above a whisper. I turned and left, each step away from her feeling heavier than the last. When I reached the garage, I glanced at the car I ha
EVELYN'S POV:As I walked into my house, I couldn't help but think about Aaron and what Leonard had told me. Questions about why Aaron would do something like that filled my heart. Life had a way of teaching harsh lessons, and this was one of them—be careful with people, and don't trust too easily. But I didn’t want to dwell on it for long. I had shared an amazing time with Leonard the night before, and I didn’t want anything to ruin those memories. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, forcing Aaron's thoughts out of my mind.Instead, I focused on how Leonard had surprised me with the car and how we had spent the day together, laughing and joking. The way he looked at me, with so much care and affection, lingered in my mind. He made me feel like I was the only person in the world who mattered. I hadn’t felt this way about anyone before, but I could tell when I loved someone and when they cared for me in return. I couldn’t hide it anymore—I loved Leonard.I wasn’t going to let thou
EVELYN'S POV:At the first ring, Leonard picked up the call. His calm voice greeted me, and I wasted no time asking if he could come to my place for the night, whenever he was done with what he was doing.“As it pleases her majesty,” he teased, his tone light and playful.I explained to him that I was heading to see my dad but reassured him that my place would remain unlocked. It took so much discipline not to share the good news about my project approval with him right away. I wanted to tell him face-to-face and see his reaction.Once I was ready, I stepped out of my room, eager to meet my dad. However, as I entered his house, it was eerily quiet. Confusion began to take hold.“Dad?” I called out, but there was no response.I headed to his bedroom door, only to find it locked. My confusion quickly turned into fear.“Dad?” I called again, my voice more urgent as I rushed back to the living room.Just then, the lights flickered on, and there he was, standing with a bottle of wine in hi
EVELYN'S POVAs I sat in the office, my eyes were fixed on the laptop in front of me, one hand resting on my cheek. Though my eyes were on the screen, my thoughts wandered far away. Suddenly, the door creaked open, pulling my attention to the figure standing in the doorway. It was Leonard, and my heart skipped a beat as our eyes met. I glanced at the clock—it was past 6 p.m. I adjusted my chair and sat up straight, attempting to compose myself. As I stared at Leonard, my imagination took over for a moment. He looked like he had just stepped out of an oven—hot and fresh. I could almost pounce on him. A smile crept onto his face as his eyes stayed locked on mine, and I felt my heart flutter. We hadn’t spoken a word since he entered, but the tension between us was undeniable. I found my breaths shallow and labored—it was like I couldn’t breathe. That was when I finally understood the concept of, “you take my breath away.”Leonard broke the silence, his voice low and husky. “Evelyn, I’m s
EVELYN'S POVIt was the first time I'd seen Leonard so cold and detached. His piercing gaze bore into Aaron's soul, and his voice was firm and commanding. The tension in the room was palpable, like the sharp crackle of high-voltage electricity, I watched Leonard’s personality switch.I struggled to collect myself, focusing on the unfolding situation. Aaron was pleading his innocence, insisting he had done nothing wrong. But Leonard wasn’t buying it. His anger was evident in the tight lines of his jaw and the sharpness of his tone. “Cut that off.” He said in a cold tone.“The sooner you stop lying, the safer it’ll be for you,” Leonard warned icily. Then came the questions, each one like a carefully aimed bullet:“Why did you ensure Evelyn's project was terminated? Why did you want to bring down the company? Who do you work with? And why do you work with them?”Leonard’s men stood nearby, their expressions stoic and unreadable, ready to act at the slightest cue. I shivered, a cold chill
EVELYN'S POV:As I stepped out of the car, I stood for a moment, watching Leonard drive away. A pang pierced my heart. I had chosen to suppress whatever feelings I harbored for him. A tear trickled down my cheek. I watched him turn the car around and drive off. I knew my decisions wouldn't be an easy one.But I had a task to accomplish and I had to stay undistracted.Swallowing my emotions, I went inside. After a quick change of clothes, I went downstairs and got a bottle of water from the kitchen. I needed to catch up with Dad. The classes had to start soon, and I needed to update him about Caleb and Dana, though I still felt uncertain. I was reluctant to leave my room, but summoning all my strength, I forced myself to go.As I stepped out of the house, I took a deep breath and closed the door behind me.When I reached Dad’s place. I saw him seated on the balcony. Quietly, I made my way upstairs to where he sat. He was engrossed in a small book, barely noticing my presence.“Morning
Happily Ever After“Yes, I do,” Evelyn said, tears streaming down her face as she stood beside the love of her life, Leonard. The sun set behind them, casting golden hues across the beach, where a small crowd of family and close friends clapped in celebration. Evelyn’s heart raced as the pastor, with a gentle grin, declared, “By the power vested in me by the state, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride now.”Leonard didn’t hesitate. He pulled Evelyn close, capturing her lips in a deep, passionate kiss. His mother playfully covered her face, peeking through her fingers, while the crowd cheered and laughed.“Grandma, I want to join Mummy and Daddy!” Ryan and River said in unison, their excitement contagious. Without waiting for permission, they ran to the couple, joining them on the floor. Evelyn and Leonard embraced the kids, laughing as they all danced together when the music began to play.Though the ceremony was intimate, the guests in attendance were people o
Evelyn's POVIt was Leonard, he was carrying the baby, the excitement in his face before I slept off had vanished. “ Babe, what's going on?” I asked. But he didn't say anything, his head was just bowed down slightly, as if finding answers from the baby.My mind started reeling with several thoughts, I knew he had gone to see my dad, did he not like the child?“ Say something.” I said desperately.“ I'm sorry Evelyn.” He said but then paused again, his lips shaking. The door of the room opened again, and the Caregiver walked in.She was also cold. I became confused.“ Was anything wrong with my baby? I asked myself.“ Babe you have to be strong, I'm sorry Mr Wyatt. He didn't complete his sentence when I realized what he was trying to say.My dad was dead, Mr Wyatt was dead. My life was over, literally what came to my mind.“ Noo, no, say something else.” I said, tears streaming down my face.It became difficult to breathe. I was choking on air. I wept bitterly on the bed, Leonard trie
EVELYN’S POV:It had been over two months since the failed surgery. My dad had been living on what felt like a miracle ever since. Each day with him was a gift, a fragile thread holding him here. Leonard, Mia, and the caregiver had been the pillars of support I leaned on during those challenging months.Ryan and River visited often, bringing small moments of joy, but today wasn’t about my dad or them. Today, it was my turn on the hospital bed. Inside the labor room, I lay ready—or as ready as anyone could be—to meet the life I had carried for nine months. The pain I felt was incomparable, beyond anything I’d ever imagined.I clung tightly to Leonard’s hand. He stood beside me, his calm voice trying to pierce through my haze of agony. “You’re doing so well, babe. Just a little more.”A doctor—or maybe a nurse or midwife—entered the room, her expression calm yet purposeful. I knew it was time. She held a syringe, walking briskly toward me.“Hello, madam. Just relax and stay calm. You ca
LEONARD’S POV:Then I turned my attention back to driving. Even though this was supposed to be exciting news on a normal day, we couldn't celebrate it."I'm hungry," Evelyn said. I gave her a questioning look.I turned the car onto another route as we started looking for a restaurant. We eventually found one and walked inside. The meal was nice, and I realized I was also hungry. After eating, we didn’t leave immediately; we stayed for a while to relax. Then a call came to my phone. I took it out and saw it was a new number. Surprisingly, I hesitated before answering, wondering who it could be.“Good day, sir,” a voice said on the other end.I tried to recognize the voice but couldn’t.“I’m from the press hub,” the voice continued. My interest piqued. “What’s the situation?” I asked urgently.“We have three offers right now,” he said.A wave of excitement washed over me for a moment.“Alright, I need their details immediately,” I said and hung up.I turned to speak to Evelyn, only to r
LEONARD’S POV:"It's the court hearing; it's tomorrow. It had just slipped my mind," I said to her, my words unorganized."I'm famished," she said, ignoring the information I had just shared, as if she hadn't asked in the first place."Here you go," I said, serving her meal."Smells so good," she said, sniffing the food while closing her eyes.We had a quick breakfast. Time flew by, and before I knew it, it was the next morning. When I woke up, Evelyn was sleeping peacefully beside me on the bed. The only unusual thing was her large baby bump, which I had grown used to."Good morning, baby," I whispered in her ear and kissed her before getting out of bed.I went to the kitchen and poured myself a glass of water. After finishing it, I started making coffee for us. I was almost done when a familiar voice interrupted me."Good morning," Evelyn said with a bright smile. Even though we were indoors, she shone like the sun.I moved toward her, kissed her cheek playfully, and then kissed her
LEONARD’S POV:Her checkups and scan didn’t take much time. The baby was fine and Evelyn was in perfect condition. Though the doctor recommended so much rest. Afterward, she requested to see the twins.“But they had left only yesterday!” I protested. The twins had become a big part of our lives, visiting from time to time. Even though they stayed at their grandparents’ house, their bond with Evelyn remained strong. They were so fond of her that they never wanted to leave whenever they came over. The feeling was mutual.“But I miss them,” she said, pouting her lips. “We won’t stay long; it’ll just be a brief visit.”“I know, but the doctor said you need rest. You should get some,” I tried to convince her. But Evelyn wasn’t one to give up easily.Eventually, she succeeded in convincing me instead. I called the kids' grandparents on our way to inform them of our visit. As soon as we arrived, the kids ran out to welcome us. I scooped both of them into my arms and lifted them high. Only t
LEONARD’S POV:I adjusted the car seat and pulled her toward me. She tried to pull away, but she couldn’t match my strength.“Leave me alone. I hate you,” she said, hitting me violently. But I kept my hold firm on her. After a moment of crying and consoling, she eventually calmed down.“Evelyn, I promise everything will be fine,” I said reassuringly.“No, nothing is fine. He’s getting worse every day,” she replied, her voice frail. She clung to me and sobbed gently. “I don’t want anything to happen to him.”“Of course not,” I answered. When she was calm enough, I started the car and we drove to the hospital.“How are you, Evelyn?” my mom asked as soon as we stepped inside the hospital room. The caregiver was sitting on a chair, while my mom sat beside Mr. Wyatt on his bed. He was awake now, though he looked so weak and pale. He wasn't the Mr Wyatt I knew months back anymore. We settled in and tried to cheer Mr. Wyatt up. We had a good time that evening. It was the first time I’d seen
LEONARD’S POV:“I miss you so much,” I said to her, placing a kiss on her cheek and then her forehead.“And you had to do this?” she said mockingly to me.“Of course, I’ll do it anytime,” I replied. She giggled and hugged me again.“Good afternoon, sir,” her secretary walked up to us and greeted me.I responded, and then we made preparations to leave. Evelyn and I stayed entwined with each other the entire time. We all boarded the jet and took off.Evelyn’s face shifted slightly, and before I could ask her what was wrong, she said, “How is my dad?”I kept quiet for a moment, thinking of how to respond. “He’s steady for now,” I lied. I couldn’t bring myself to tell her the truth—not yet.“I can’t wait to see him,” she said happily.“Sure, you’ll see him soon,” I replied, trying to sound confident.Even though she appeared happy, her face was still marked with dark circles, and I could see through her mask. She was deeply worried about her dad.“My mom is also at the hospital; she came
LEONARD’S POV:“I figured you haven’t had time to eat,” she said, noticing the amusement on my face.As I ate, we had a little conversation, and then she asked, “How do you intend to break the news to Evelyn?”I slightly choked on the food and let out a faint cough. I was frozen for a moment. It was still a question that lingered in my mind, unanswered.“I don't know. I’ve thought about it several times, but I can’t seem to find a good way to say it to her,” I explained. My mom placed her hand on my shoulder and said, “Just take it easy on yourself.”“Thank you, Mom,” I replied and continued eating my meal. Then my phone rang suddenly. I quickly picked it up without even checking the caller.“Good afternoon, sir,” the voice on the other end said respectfully.“The project has been approved. I just received an email—have you seen it yet?” he asked.I’d been so busy I hadn’t even thought about work. I had almost forgotten I was waiting for an approval. This was good news. It was a multi
