Chapter 49

Elena’s POV:

I slowly regained consciousness and blink my eyes open. Everywhere seemed to be blurry, and my body felt numb. I tried to look around and understand my body, but I was too weak to do that. I tilted my head sideways until I could strain my eyes.

There was someone sitting beside me. I could hear the silent noises as if he were calling my name, and his hands reached out to me gently.

“Elena, Elena. Can you see me? How are you doing?” he asked.  His voice was calm and soft, and the person reached for my hand.

I opened my mouth to speak, but the words wouldn't come out of my mouth. My throat was dry, and my voice was hoarse.

“What happened?” I asked sluggishly, and my voice was husky. I looked around to see that I was in a completely different environment.

"Easy, Elena, easy... Take it easy.” The voice murmured in a gentle tone.

“Nicklaus, what's going on?” I asked. Trying to keep my cool and understand the situation.

I struggled to pay attention to what was going on with me, but nothing seemed to work out. I felt numb and weak. My body felt different. I felt light in some ways.

My hands were too weak to move, and I gradually moved them to my stomach. I felt some sort of sharp pain. I tried to stay awake, but my eyelids were heavy.

I held my breath and tried to steady myself. My hands rested on my tummy when I felt some sort of cramp.

“Nicklaus,” I whispered; he leaned in closer to me and ran his hands through my hair. “What is going on? Why am I here?” I asked weakly.

I felt sleepy, but I tried to fight the sleep. I didn't want to rest until I got answers. Nicklaus stared at me, and he wouldn't say anything. He just kept calming me down and making me feel like everything was alright, but deep down I knew all wasn't alright.

My hands went to my stomach when I felt something heavy and light at the same time. My lips were chapped, and I felt dehydrated.

I became very tired, and my eyes closed. I was covered in darkness, and I drifted off to sleep.

*****

I woke up from my slumber after some time, and my strength had slowly returned. I opened my eyes slowly and tried to see clearly. Nicklaus was sitting down beside me. His hands were on mine, and he leaned on the bed.

He looked so pale and rough. He didn't look so good, which even made me more curious.

It seemed he had rested enough. He was fast asleep on the sofa, and I could tell that he was very tired. I slowly recalled what happened, and I stretched to look at my tummy.

My hands were on my tummy, and I thought about the baby the whole time. It felt empty, and I was bloated. I couldn't understand what was going on. I just wished somebody would explain to me so that I would understand.

I looked around and saw myself in a hospital. I couldn't feel anything but just pain. I whined in pain as I sat upright. Nicklaus woke up when I moved and tried to sit.

He reached out to me and gently held my hands.

“Elena? Are you okay?” he asked. His eyes scanned my whole body, and he made sure that I was calm.

I looked up to him, “Nicklaus? What's going on? What am I doing in the hospital, and how long have I been here? I asked as I began to panic. My voice was hoarse, and I felt dehydrated.

My voice was hoarse, and I felt my chest tighten. Why do I feel so weak and dehydrated? I wasn't even thinking straight. It could be as a result of the drip and injection that had been induced into my body system.

My lips were dry and chapped. The only thing I wanted right now was answers. I placed my hands on my belly, and I felt empty.

Nicklaus didn't say a word. He just stared at me in silence. He handed me a glass of water to drink, but I declined. I wanted answers.

“Nicklaus, I'm talking to you. Say something.” I spoke, my voice raising. Deep down, I could sense that something had gone wrong. I just couldn't get what it was. I felt empty inside me.

My eyes were fixed on him as I waited for him to speak. I wish I could read his thoughts and know what was going through his mind.

“Elena, you had a crisis, and you passed out,” Nicklaus explained, his gaze moving to the floor. “You were poisoned at the party,” he said, his voice low.

My heart slammed against my chest, and my jaw dropped. “Poisoned? How come?” I asked. That's when I remembered that I was in so much pain that night after we left the party.

I screeched my brows and recalled what had happened at the party. I didn't even have much to drink. It was just a cup of juice. Then how would be poisoned?

“Who would want to poison me?” I asked, and my ears were filling up with tears. “Why me?” I asked with my voice cracking.

“We are still investigating, and we will get to the root of the problem and catch the culprit,” Nicklaus responded. His voice Was barely above a whisper, and he looked sad.

Then I remembered something very important.

“The baby, Nicklaus, what about the baby?” I asked, touching my hands on my stomach to see if I would feel anything. I moved my hands and my stomach, and I felt a little bit of pain. My skin developed goosebumps.
