Chapter 147

Elena’s POV:

It was evening, and I decided to stop by the grocery store to get some groceries.

I had not even stepped all day. I stayed indoors, wallowing in my sorrows. I thought about how my life would be if I decided to take the job.

Now that I am jobless, let me make myself useful in the house before accepting Nicklaus's hell offer. I just wish that I would never see his face again, but it seems like I have no choice.

I can't let everything that I had worked for go to waste. I can't let this little disaster ruin my little reputation. I know Sam would want to hire me in his company, but I do not have a passion for white-collar jobs.

Wave and I were walking down the store when he held my hands, “Mummy, can we go check that out? I want to see the toy,” he said, looking at me with his pupils dilating.

“Wave, we can't. I don't have enough money to get you a new toy, and besides, you have more than enough toys.” I protested.

His pupil dilated. "Please, mummy. Let me go check it out,” he said, grabbing my hands.

I scoffed. “Fine, just for a few seconds,” I said, and we walked into the mall. Wave ran to the toys and watched all of the games.

"Baby, let's go common,” I said, but he seemed to be carried away with the new collections of toys.

After a few minutes, a lady walked up to us and said, “Ma'am, you should leave if you are not getting anything. We have a lot of people here, and we can't deal with those who can't afford to pay,”

“What do you mean? How much does the game cost for you to speak in such a manner?” I spoke up, holding Wave beside me.

“Well, I can only tell you if you are willing to buy or you leave,” she said, and her voice dripped with sarcasm.

“Yes, I am ready to buy it,”

“Well, it's 2000 bucks,” she said and folded her hands.

I scoffed, “What?”

The lady laughed out loud, “Well, I told you, you cannot afford to buy it. Now leave before I call the security on you both,” she said.

“Don't talk to my mother that way,” Wave spoke.

“You have to leave now, ma'am.”

“That's not how to speak to customers.” I heard a voice from behind.

The lady apologised. “I'm so sorry about that, sir,” she pleaded.

“Package the game collection for the little boy.”

I turned around to see Nicklaus standing behind me. Waves eyes lit up, and he shouted, “Mr Nicklaus,” he said, and hugged him tightly.

“How are you, little man?” He asked and waved and nodded his head. “I am fine.”

Wave walked up to me, “Mummy, I am sorry for that earlier. I only wanted to check out the new toys,”

“It's fine, son,” I said calmly. I couldn't wait to leave with Wave and get out of Nicklaus's sight.

“You shouldn't have bothered. He was just checking the game collections out,” I said.

“Well, a child never gets tired of toys,” he spoke, and I rolled my arms.

“I haven't heard from you. Are you taking the job offer?”

I shook my head, and the woman handed us the toys.

“I'm so sorry for the inconvenience,” she spoke and smiled nervously. I turned to Nicklaus. “Thank you, but you shouldn't have bothered,” I muttered. “What should you say to Nicklaus?” I asked, looking at Wave.

“Thank you,” he spoke with his tiny voice.

“Elena, please,” Nicklaus spoke.

“Now, let's go wave,” I said, and we quickly walked out of the store. I let out a sigh of relief. It's a good thing that you have left his sight. I don't want him close to my son before he sees the resemblance and suspects that wave is his.

My phone beeped with a notification. I kept chatting with Sam after having dinner. He had travelled out of town for a business meeting.

“I can't believe all of that happened today,” Zoey said as she cleared the dining table.

I dropped my phone and signed, “I couldn't believe it either,” I spoke, rolling my eyes. “I don't even want him close to my son.”

Zoey reached for my hands and gently squeezed them. "Elena, now is not the time to be stubborn. I know Nicklaus hurt you, but you need this job. You can't be like this, more especially not doing what you love the most; it's killing you. Just accept the job. In a few weeks, he will be out of your life for good,” she advised.

I scoffed and shook my head. “I don't know Zoey; I will think about it. This is such a hard decision, and I will do my best to keep the wave away from him.”

“If I were you, I would grab the offer. First. Do it for the sake of saving your job. Remove the personal grudges you are having against him for now,” she said.

“I will resume work tomorrow. It's not like I have a choice,” I stood up from the chair.

“Have a good night's rest. Thank you, Zoey,” I said and wrapped my arms around her.

I retired to bed, and my eyes were open all night long. I thought about the whole situation, and I didn't find it exciting. I wish it was a different guest. I never wanted Nicklaus back into my life.

After so much tossing and thinking. I took my phone and texted my boss, "Yes, I will take the job offer.”

He responded, “Fine. This is your chance to prove yourself; don't let me down,” he warned. I placed the phone on the bed and snuggled deeper into my pillow.

I closed my eyes and allowed myself to get some rest against the busy day tomorrow.
