Chapter 41

I knew the kiss with Lucius was lasting longer than a “fake kiss” should, but my desire to pull away from him was nonexistent. I was completely intoxicated by his lips, his touch, and the way he made me feel. Still, all good things must come to an end.“Um, excuse me, lovebirds, we’re still here,” Amanda said, her voice tinged with awkwardness. At her words, Lucius and I pulled apart, turning to face her. And not just her, but the rest of my family. I wasn’t sure who looked more upset, Andrew or Amelia. They were definitely in competition. Meanwhile, my father, ever the business enthusiast, looked more satisfied than ever. Want to see Serge Fairmount happy? Show him some money.“We know you’re here, sister. It’s just… we got caught up in the moment…” I said, turning to gaze into Lucius’s eyes, as if we were connected on a deeper level.“Completely caught up,” Lucius agreed, his hand still resting on my back, almost touching my butt. I laughed, playing the part of a perfect actress.

Chapter 42

As the doors closed behind them, I had to bring my glass to Lucius’s for a clink. We shared a conspiratorial smile before sipping our champagne.…We were seconds away from reaching Jenna’s apartment, the one I still hadn’t moved out of while I finalized the paperwork with the bank for my new place. In this brief moment, I had to praise Lucius’s performance. He had driven me home in his car because I’d declined to join him for dinner at Dalia. I just wanted to rest—it had been a long day.“That was perfect. You knocked it out of the park,” I praised Lucius beside me.“It must’ve been perfect to make you this happy. You’re hard to please.”“I’m not, if you know me well,” I smiled as he parked near the building. “Thanks for the ride. We’ll talk tomorrow.”“Tomorrow?” he asked, confused. “Isn’t tomorrow Sunday?”I pressed my legs together, reminded that I’d left my thong at Andrew’s place. It was like having one less layer of protection against my own animal instincts. Lucius had c

Not even my intense hatred for Andrew made me want to kill him. And I certainly didn’t want Lucius getting into trouble over that idiot. I had to put an end to this scene before anyone saw us, so I went straight to my fiancé and grabbed his arm.“Stop, Lucius! He’s drunk! He doesn’t know what he’s doing!” I pleaded.“Yeah, that’s what they say. But guys like him always know what they’re doing,” Lucius muttered as he stopped pressing down on Andrew’s neck and stepped back.Andrew, for his part, lay on the ground, coughing and spitting up blood. He struggled to his feet, swaying, and I took no pleasure in seeing his shirt stained red or his eyes lost in a haze of anger and alcohol.“You’ll pay for this. Both of you will,” he spat out as he staggered away.…Back at the apartment, I rummaged through Jenna’s closet for the first aid kit. I found the white plastic box and took it out to tend to Lucius. He was on the sofa, his jacket discarded, and a glance at his hand made me worry.

“Aren’t you going to kiss me on the lips as a reward?” I asked, breathless from the arousal that was killing me.“Exactly…” he smiled before disappearing between my legs.I fought to hold back my voice, but I wasn’t doing a good job of it. A moan escaped me, then another, and another. From the vague memories of that one night, Lucius hadn’t gone down on me then. And I’d never let Andrew do this either, so this was my first time receiving this kind of pleasure. It was different, strange, and delicious. I loved how he used his tongue there, helping me discover this new kind of ecstasy. It felt so wet and sinful. I lost myself in this joy, which only intensified when I stopped staring at the ceiling and focused on Lucius, on his intense eyes locked on mine as he did this.At one point, my back arched, so close to reaching an orgasm. And then I did, in a divine way that made me see colors—possibly even a few stars.“That was… that was…” I gasped, breathless. Before I could catch my b

Rush-hour metro rides were more colorful than you could imagine. At the end of the aisle, there was a singer collecting coins while hitting all the wrong notes. Behind me, a baby was crying its lungs out, and in front of me, two old men were arguing about politics. And then there was me, clutching a grab handle, dead tired, with another big nuisance to my right: Jenna giggling like a preschooler. I was the reason for her laughter.“It’s Thursday already. You’ve been mocking me for three days straight. Don’t you ever get tired?” I complained, pulling my purse higher on my shoulder.“You think this is mockery? It’s not,” she lied, gripping her handle as tightly as I was. “These are gestures of support disguised as nervousness. Which just so happens to look like laughter.”I bit my tongue at her grandiose response. She’d been like this ever since I’d filled her in about Lucius proposing to me, giving me that engagement ring, and how she’d seen us disrespecting her couch.“Save your ‘

“Sorry, but… have we met before?” I asked, confused. He looked surprised before laughing. Dimples appeared on his cheeks.“Don’t you remember me? We took Commercial Law together at university,” he revealed.“We did?” I asked, still confused. He laughed more, looking slightly embarrassed but amused. I felt terrible. “Are you sure? Maybe you’re mistaken. I don’t remember studying in any semester with the son of a multinational company’s president.”During the negotiation, Ernest had explained that Matt was the eldest son of the company’s president. Since his father’s health had declined, Matt had been taking over the business. My impression that he was a young man wasn’t wrong. If he’d studied with me, he must be under 30 or no older than 32.“That’s because I didn’t enroll under my real name. I went incognito to start from scratch. You know how parents are—they want us to toughen up in college without using our last names to gain favors. You did the same, didn’t you? You’re Serge’s

Without the context of what we’d just heard, I was sure this office would look like a game of freeze tag. No one moved or breathed, including Amy and myself. But not Lucius, of course.“Are you being paid to be nosy?” he asked, clearly in a foul mood.No one answered him. Amy just shrugged and stared at the floor. The place was as still as a desert.“Get moving!” he barked. At that, everyone jumped, including me. Tom and Savannah rushed back to their desks, Amy ran off somewhere far from to put distance between herself and our boss, and the noise returned to the floor. I could hear the beginnings of phone calls and the frantic clicking of keyboards in the distance. I wanted to flee my spot too, but Lucius’s focus was entirely on me.“Come to my office,” he demanded before turning and walking away.I had no choice but to follow him to his office. Lucius’s behavior left me bewildered. That feeling didn’t leave as I entered his office and saw him leaning against his desk, arms cross

My heart sank. It was painfully obvious that to Lucius, I was just a challenge, and that he wanted to get me back in his bed. To me, though, sadly, he was more than that. But still, I wouldn’t let him win.“And why should I care?” I shrugged, feigning indifference.“Excuse me?” he snapped, offended.“Why should I care who you have fun with out there? Do you have a leash around your neck, and am I supposed to have you trained? This isn’t real. You’re free to sleep with whoever you want. Or are you saying that if I asked you to keep it exclusive, you’d actually respect that?”My audacity seemed to throw him off more than I expected. I saw a flicker of confusion in Lucius’s eyes, sparking a thousand thoughts in my naive heart. If we came to an agreement to be lovers, but exclusive lovers, maybe… just maybe… something more could come from it, right? Like feelings, and maybe even more. Something real.“If your intention is for us to be exclusive, you could just say so, and I’d know whe

Out of all the mysteries Lucius presented to me, the one involving his relationship with Amelia gnawed at my insides the most. How could it not, with those two looking at each other with such blatant loathing? What was with the strange reactions my stepmother had around him? And what was with that undisguised hatred my fake fiancé showed towards her?“Amelia, that’s a bit out of line. Lucius and I are getting married. He’ll be part of *our* family,” I interjected.“Marianne, what are you doing here? I didn’t know you were here…” Amelia stammered, smoothing her dress, clearly uncomfortable.“She works here. What are you talking about? The one who shouldn’t be in this office is you. Who let you in?” Lucius retorted sharply. This was a side of Lucius I’d come to recognize. He could be incredibly charming, but also incredibly unpleasant when he wanted to be. Right now, he was being the latter. Then again, he always was when dealing with Amelia.“This used to be my husband’s office. Yo

“I told you how Amelia acts weird around Lucius and vice versa. They’re talking in his office right now, so I left my phone behind with the voice recorder on” I said, feeling proud.Jenna didn’t share my enthusiasm about my brilliant plan. Quite the opposite.“They’re still acting strange? Do you think they had an affair?”I almost spat out my coffee. I looked at Jenna, disgust written all over my face. Lucius and Amelia? Together?“What kind of affair?” I asked, pretending I didn’t understand what she meant.“Well… your stepmother is very attractive and has kept herself in great shape for her age. And Lucius is a womanizer, as far as we know. Maybe they reconnected by chance, and that’s where the tension comes from. What else could it be?”“No… that can’t be true.”“Why not? Do you trust either of them to be ethical?”The truth was, I didn’t. It wouldn’t be a shock if Amelia, being the witch that she was, had cheated on my father. I didn’t see her as decent enough not to have
