Chapter 47

Without the context of what we’d just heard, I was sure this office would look like a game of freeze tag. No one moved or breathed, including Amy and myself. But not Lucius, of course.

“Are you being paid to be nosy?” he asked, clearly in a foul mood.

No one answered him. Amy just shrugged and stared at the floor. The place was as still as a desert.

“Get moving!” he barked.

At that, everyone jumped, including me. Tom and Savannah rushed back to their desks, Amy ran off somewhere far from to put distance between herself and our boss, and the noise returned to the floor. I could hear the beginnings of phone calls and the frantic clicking of keyboards in the distance. I wanted to flee my spot too, but Lucius’s focus was entirely on me.

“Come to my office,” he demanded before turning and walking away.

I had no choice but to follow him to his office. Lucius’s behavior left me bewildered. That feeling didn’t leave as I entered his office and saw him leaning against his desk, arms cross
