Part One Hundred and Ten

We had spent hours in Malachi’s study discussing what possible due cause they could have. Neither of them were involved with the pack, neither of them had suffered any losses like we had. Christian had more due cause than they had. We couldn’t come up with a plausible answer to how they would swing this in their favor and we gave up after a few hours. The knock on our door came at six p.m., just as we finished dinner. Malachi had been quiet and distant. I opened the front door and a smiling Alexander stood there with a large envelope in his hands. My instant dislike for him rose and I didn’t care that he was my brother anymore. I cared that he thought he could oust my father.“Kiran.” Alexander nodded and stepped past me inside the house.“Puppet.” He smirked at me as I barely glanced at him. I wouldn’t show him an ounce of respect and I knew that if Franklin had been here instead of Alexander, I would’ve hurt him.“I thought it best to deliver our claim to you personally.” Alexander

Part One Hundred and Eleven

“I haven’t been a particularly good Alpha these last two years. Perhaps it is time for me to step down and for someone else to take the reins.” This wasn’t my father. This was some man, not an Alpha and not Malachi Sinclair. This was not the man that had taught me never to give up on anything.I was shocked beyond words. “We never give up! Isn’t that what you’ve taught me my whole life?”Malachi didn’t answer me and I could see that he truly believed himself to be a terrible Alpha. The events leading up to that explosion wasn’t his fault just like it wasn’t the fault of anyone else other than Adrian.“When are we supposed to attend this claim?” I looked at the papers again and found the date to answer James.“Friday night.”Malachi stood up and retreated to his study, leaving us in the kitchen with no answers and no plan. I felt restless and I was itching to let off some steam, maybe even punch something, but I had to be the Alpha in Malachi’s stead now and come up with a plan. The on

Malachi didn’t stray from his normal routine. He went to his office and to court and kept to his appointments, clearing most of his cases. That worried me; he was clearing his schedule and he refrained from joining any meetings with me and James.I didn’t want Adara anywhere near the den on Friday night and for the first time in our lives I pulled rank on her as she insisted on being by my side. Adara, Christian and Shoran would spend the night with Robert and Malika.I had met with Robert early that Friday morning and proceeded to tell him everything. They would be safe with Robert and I knew that he would follow my instructions.“Franklin wants Malachi dead so that Alexander can claim the Alpha seat. They have due cause and their claim has been accepted by The Council. We will meet them tonight.”I had to explain who The Council was and how the claims worked but in the end he finally understood my reasoning. He agreed with me when I said that none of us could trust Franklin or Alexa

Malachi lowered his head. He had wanted them to bend the knee, to just accept his fate and move on. Each one of us would die for him, would gladly take his place in that inner circle, and be judged. After ten minutes, I could see the anger rising in Alexander before he managed to block me out.“Malachi Sinclair … your pack has spoken. You will now enter into a fight of dominance.”Malachi walked to where I stood and took off his shirt, handing it to me. “You should have bent the knee. They would’ve followed you.” His voice was barely a whisper.“We never bend the knee against our own.” I clenched my jaw tightly, knowing that he didn’t want to hear that.Malachi’s smile was filled with sadness and he placed his hand on my shoulder. “I’m very proud of you, Kiran.” That was the precise moment I knew that Malachi wasn’t going to fight. He wanted to die in that circle. My biggest fear was becoming a reality.Alexander had also taken off his shirt and I noticed that he was unmarked. Frankli

I handed James the keys to my Jeep to get the women from Robert’s house. We needed Adara. I drove home slowly in Malachi’s Navigator, the dirt road feeling bumpier than usual.Malachi looked at me through his bloodied face and placed his hand on my shoulder. “Why did you do that?”I braked hard and turned to look at him. “Because I love you. I knew you weren’t going to fight him. I knew there was a chance they’d kill me with you but it was a chance I was willing to take.”We arrived at the house first and I helped Malachi out of the car and into the house. I eased him down on the couch and bent down beside him. “Why didn’t you fight?”“I’m not Franklin. I won’t kill my children, not even him.”Malachi winced in pain and I took out my phone to call James. As it started ringing I saw headlights in the driveway and disconnected the call. It wasn’t James though. I stood at the front door looking at George Haynes and his Beta.“Good evening. May we come in?”“Of course, Alpha George.” I op

Malachi was near the stairs but he turned back to face her. He was too shocked to string a sentence together. “Adara, I…”“I don’t care what you want. He was prepared to die with you tonight, if nothing else matters to you anymore, that should! I suggest you take some time to stop feeling sorry for yourself and start acting like the father you should now be to all of us!” Adara turned on her heel and headed towards the stairs.I stood there for a few seconds, shocked. I hadn’t expected that from her. Malachi started laughing and then I joined him. We laughed until tears ran down our cheeks and we had to stop to catch our breath. She hadn’t left as we thought, and she stood there glaring at us. I wiped the tears from my eyes, and she started walking towards me. Anger radiated from her aura and I couldn’t help the chuckle that escaped from my lips.“What the hell is so funny?” She demanded to know.“You.” I started laughing again. Malachi composed himself first and cleared his throat.“

I woke up the next morning feeling like a heavy weight had been lifted from my shoulders. We were alive. I geared up for my usual morning jog and found James and Malachi in the kitchen, ready to jog with me.We jogged down the dirt road, down Lowell Canyon Drive and past the hotel. We turned left and jogged into town where I stopped at the coffee shop I normally stopped at. I was so used to jogging alone that my mind was wandering and I kept thinking about the previous night.“Kiran …” Malachi’s voice held a warning tone and my face turned red from embarrassment.“Sorry, I forgot you were here.” James laughed loudly as we bought coffee and sat down at a nearby table.“I should probably start looking for a job. Any ideas?” James successfully changed the subject and all thoughts of Adara and our shower last night were forgotten. We sipped our coffees and watched the townspeople go about their early morning routines. It was peaceful just sitting there with them and I knew that our lives

The house was full of noises when Robert walked in with Christian and he decided to stay for breakfast as well. Christian leapt into my arms like he always did and told me about the scary dinosaur movie he had watched with Robert.Robert smiled. “Jurassic Park’s not that scary.”“Robert, he’s five! To him it is scary.” Robert opened and closed his mouth and then looked sheepishly at me.“Sorry,” he mumbled and I shook my head.I told Shoran and Adara that they were to stay at home with Christian. I didn’t want to give Alexander any opportunities to be in the same room with her. Adara tiredly nodded her head and remained on the couch.“It’s almost time to go.” Malachi nodded his head as I kissed Adara goodbye.“Where are you going?” Robert had remained seated as Carl, Frank and Richard stood up and grabbed their keys.“To the den. We need to finalize Alexander’s claim on Malachi’s belongings.”“Let’s go.” Robert stood up but I stopped him.“No Robert …” His look silenced me, something

Malachi sat in his office and thought of the events that had happened the last two weeks. He still couldn’t believe that they had escaped unscathed. If George Haynes had been a different Alpha, he and Kiran would both be dead.Malachi wiped a hand over his face. He had wanted to die that night; he’d wanted to die ever since Karani had died. She had been the other half of his soul and he saw no reason to go on without her.Even though he was an outcast now he knew that their pack would always remain intact no matter what status they had. He didn’t want to die anymore and he didn’t want to be Alpha either. He only regretted that Kiran would suffer the same consequences. He would’ve made a terrific Alpha.“Sorry Malachi.” Tim Oakes had been on his phone, leaving Malachi alone with his thoughts.“No problem. We can finalize the contract next week and you’ll be the proud new owner of the beach front cabins.”“Thank you. I really appreciate all the hard work you’ve put in.”Malachi and Tim

Malachi smiled as he walked out of his office and found Jessica leaning against the front of the Navigator, looking care-free and young. She was young and he wasn’t so young anymore. She was also beautiful, intriguing and intelligent. She was still too young for him.“Took you long enough.” Jessica removed her sunglasses and smiled.“You are something else.” Malachi unlocked the doors and Jessica climbed into the passenger seat.“You can take me to dinner or a late lunch or whatever you want to call it.” She made herself comfortable in the seat and put her safety belt on. Malachi felt at ease, calm and happy. That emotion shocked him a little because he never thought he’d feel that again.Malachi could only smile as he drove out of the parking lot and headed towards the highway, heading out of Seward and in the general direction of Sterling.“Where are we going, handsome?” Malachi laughed as Jessica winked at him.“You know, I’m much too old for you.” Malachi glanced at her. She was d
