Chapter 60

Alessa wore the proper attire as she walked back and forward outside the iron gate at midnight. The majestic garden in the back was slightly in view making her relive the older, happier memories. As Alessa promised herself, she got better the next few weeks, she was walking almost normally now. So good, she was able to get released from the hospital. Madison was on her way to London after battling with Alessa to join her for a few weeks. Alessa was adamant about staying, lying and saying she wanted to go visit her childhood home once more before they left. Madison hesitantly agreed and left, promising Alessa that she would pester her every day till Alessa booked her ticket to London. Now Alessa was staking out of the mansion, a big window in the living room almost visible to see what was going on inside. So far there had been no activity. However, after 20 minutes of waiting she saw Aspen come out from the garden, fixing her hair, and her dress. After she disappeared inside, James

About year later Alessa scrubbed the 50 billion white plates, all the same, as the men behind her rushed to cook the meals for the restaurant patron. This went on for hours until finally, someone screamed, “Family dinner.” The rest of the service is canceled. We get to go home after dinner.” Everyone cheered. “What is it today?” Someone asked. “Fish and chips from a few blocks down.” A young man with red hair, pink skin, and freckles announced. Everyone groaned, including Alessa. “Oi, eat this or I throw this all in the trash and you all go hungry.” He threatened. Alessa’s stomach growled. It was 8:30 at night. She's been on her feet all day and she was ready for any excuse to sit down. She grabbed a bag from her redhead boss and walked out to the now-empty dining area. While the rest of the crew did the same, but walked outside the restaurant instead and made plans to meet up at the pub.“Just you and I again, huh?” Wade, the redheaded head chef said, taking a seat across from Al

Turned out, that staying with Wade and his teenage sister—who Alessa shared a room with—was a good idea. The teenager was studying for an exam and needed absolute quiet so her room was dark except for the little light from her laptop. Due to this, she was able to sleep as early as 9. Alessa woke up at 3:30 and Madison, who was up due to breastfeeding and just wanting to spend some time with John, decided to drop off clothes for Alessa. They met in the lobby of Wade's apartment. Sipping their coffees while Matthew—Madison’s little one—was strapped on her chest.“How was your adult sleepover?” Madison asked, blowing in her decaf coffee.“Wasn’t an adult sleepover. I slept in his sister's room.” “Why? Honey, it’s been a year. Kyle’s married and doing whatever the hell they tell him to. John was saying he was good. It’s your turn to live your life and this Wade guy has been trying for months now. Give him a chance.”“He asked me out again yesterday.” “And you said no, right.”“I’ve mov

“What do you mean our last day?” The brunette cried.“I mean I am bored,” Kyle said, and Alessa could feel his eyes on her while she continued chopping. “You were good company the last few nights but now it’s time for me to move on.” “Bored? But we just got together a few days ago. How could you be?” She cried.“I am a married man, surely you didn’t think this was long-term. I belong to someone else.” At this, Alessa looked up and Kyle and her eyes met. He took a deep breath but never let it go. She blinked away. The girl scoffed but didn’t respond. Alessa meanwhile was wringing her hand in nervousness. “Your hand okay?” Wade asked, coming to grab her hand again. “Yes, thank you,” she said, turning her attention to Kyle, but moved her hand away from Wade.“She is fine, but my food is still missing. Wade, did I pay you to flirt with your worker or cook for me?” Kyle rudely interjected. “Yes sir,” Wade said, though there was an edge to his voice.Besides Kyle, the girl sniffed. Ale

Alessa faked sickness to get out of the date and work. Then she went straight home to find John walking around their living room trying to calm Matthew down.“Alessa, how are you? I was hoping to see you on this trip!” John exclaimed while adding shush towards Matthew.“Hi John,” Alessa glumly greets. “What’s wrong?” He asked putting Matthew down on a bouncy chair and strapping him in. “I ran into your brother this morning,” Alessa said, taking a seat on the floor right in front of Matthew rattling a toy to cajol him. “You did?” John asked, joining her. “Madison’s right. He’s moved on. From me, from his wife.” Alessa sighed.“Is that what it looks like?” John bitterly asked. “He is Kyle after all. He’ll suffer in silence. He did when you broke his heart, and he is doing it now when he is trying to protect you. Every time I come to see Madison, he wonders if I’ve gotten a glimpse of you. He wants to know how you are every hour of the day, but he can’t—““So he sleeps around?” Ales

Alessa wanted to not go to work. She wanted to stay with Madison, Matthew, and John, but they have very little time alone together. So when Wade called at five in the afternoon begging her to come in because her replacement, Wilson, had to be taken to the A&E because he stuck his hand in the garbage disposal as a dare—men—she agreed. “Please! If you're really ill, just wear a mask. I can’t seem to find a replacement for you.” Wade begged.“Okay, I do feel better,” Alessa lied. Plus it’s not like Aspen was going to come into the back to check if Alessa was there. All she had to do was stay in the kitchen. Alessa had to admit that potentially getting another glance at Kyle was a driving force for her decision to go to work. So she made her way onto the tube and finally after a train full of people shoving in and out, she made it into the back kitchen where Wade greeted her with a, “It's a lot of dishes, you sure you’ll be okay.”“I am good.” Alessa got to work and the satisfaction sh

“So you aren’t turning on Kyle for Aspen’s love?” Alessa asked. They were parked outside her and Madison’s apartment.“No, and it’s not something I am interested in doing either. I do think she isn’t as evil as he makes her out to be.” James added. Alessa rolls her eyes. “She’s got you blinded by her womanly powers.” James bursted out laughing. “I missed you. I would hug you but Kyle pretty much told me he would chop my nuts off if I did.” “Yeah, he’s been doing that a lot lately.”“Lately? Isn’t today the first time you saw him?” “Nope. We ran into each other in his hotel room. Him and one of his girls—which is why I knew why Aspen was there today.” Alessa explained. “Yikes. Are you mad at him?”“No—maybe a little bit, but I am not sure if I am allowed. We were never supposed to see each other again. He is doing what he needs to. So am I. For me it’s working like a crazy person for him—it’s this.” “He gets them your perfume. It’s demented.” James shuddered. “And he is also wo

It took Alessa months to catch up with all the work Madison did. From budgets to speaking events, to red carpet walks, and most importantly investments. Investments that in the last few months she fortunately made some good ones. PHAT was slowly climbing the ladder to becoming a household name. Articles were written about the mysterious CEO of PHAT who was leading the company into its golden era. What they didn’t know was that Alessa was learning most of this on the job. It did help that Alessa had her knowledge as Madison's assistant. Speaking of Madison, she went away, far away, in Thailand. In fact, all three of them were. James assisted Alessa in getting all three of them away from her. She wanted them safe for what she was about to do next.“I am not sure you should be doing this!” Madison had said right before she left. “But PHAT is yours now. Just promise me you will be careful.”“I promise, I will!” “Good luck! I hope you get your man back after all of this. I feel like I’ve

Alessa ran into the bathroom as soon as she was done and emptied the contents of her stomach into the sink, and since she had nothing but water all day, that’s all that came out. This was it. She was going toe to toe with Camelot and in turn Kyle Danny. The former, she was fired up for, the latter, she was still confused about. She heard a knock on the bathroom door. “It’s me.” James' voice hollered from the other side.Alessa cleaned her face, closed her eyes, letting the decision she just made catch up to her, and once she was ready, she opened the door, but instead of James, she saw Kyle.“What the hell are you thinking?” He screamed before she could clarify the confusion.“I don’t know what you mean Mr.Danny. I can understand your upset—“ Kyle cut her off halfway and dragged her back to the bathroom, locking the door. “Hey, you can’t do that.” Alessa protested.“Leave. You can’t be here. Frank is going to come—““Let him. I’d like to see him.”“Are you out of your mind!” Kyle yel

John texted her early the next morning. The text read ‘You will need to run into Melinda Iron casually. She is the organizer. She is staying at the Miton in Midtown. Usually at the hotel restaurant See her picture below.’Lucky for Alessa she remembered Melinda Iron. She had worked with her team a few years back for a feature in PHAT. John had sent a picture of a motherly blonde woman, with kind tired blue eyes, and normal wrinkles. To Alessa’s shock, she didn’t look rich, or someone trying to be young. Alessa arrived at the grand Milton wearing her usual clothes, jeans and a black shirt, and not the tight dresses she’d worn every day lately. The dining room had gold ceilings, dark red walls, and patrons all in casually expensive clothes. In the sea of the rich, she spotted Melinda, sitting alone on a table reading an actual newspaper. “Haven’t seen one of those in a long while! Mind if I borrow the business section?” Alessa asked. She was juggling a full plate of food she got from
