81. I can't believe you

Jamie was surprised to hear his own thoughts.  After everything that happened, he did not expect that he still felt so strongly for her. Perhaps his heart only needed the right trigger to let all of his emotions out, and that trigger was his father’s words. Despite regretting his outburst, Jamie couldn’t help but feel as though a mountain’s weight had been lifted off his chest.  He would soon have to tell them everything, but for now, he wanted to keep them in the dark about Emma’s identity. It wouldn’t take his father long to figure out that Emma was a rogue. And if he did, all hell would break loose and he wasn’t sure if he was capable enough to protect her in the current circumstances. Unless things were under control, Jamie would have to be careful and very discreet.

82. Voice of her heart

Emma didn’t realize when she fell asleep that night, but when she woke up, she was engulfed in darkness. The windows to her room were left open, allowing cool wind to breeze across the room. Drawing her arms around herself, she tried to comfort herself into sleeping again, but it was too late. Sleep was leaving her by each passing second, and she could no longer lie down on the bed.  Sighing, she sat up straight, looking at the clock hung on the wall. It was far past midnight, she realized. She headed to the washroom to fresh up, and when she returned to her room, she heard a knock on the door.  She wasn’t sure if she heard that right at first, but after a few seconds, the knocks on the door got louder, beckoning her to rush toward it at first. Who could it be? Perhaps, Jamie? Since he was the only person who could disturb

84. In the dark

“Well, if I were to be honest, I think that I would have been far safer in his care than yours.”  She might as well have driven a sword through his heart when she said that.  Jamie couldn’t understand where he had failed for her to believe in such a thing. He could hear the accusation of betrayal in her voice, and he was lost as to why she perceived him to be so evil when all he ever cared about was to protect her. He slowly realized that in her eyes, he was the danger. He was the one that hurt her the most, and unknowingly, he had become the very thing he tried to protect her from.  Looking at her like that, he wanted to do something, anything to assure her that what he was thinking was untrue. In fact, it was the farthest thing fro

85. The news

It had been a couple of days since that night, and Emma was slowly drifting back into normalcy. Her heart still stung at the bitter reminder of it, but she was growing immune to it slowly. Lately, that was how everything else in her life was turning out to be. Day by day, she was getting accustomed to the fact that this could perhaps be how the rest of her life would span out. Surprise after surprise until nothing got to her anymore.  Having awakened early today, she decided to go for a walk to keep her mind off things. As she stepped into the backyard, she noticed that there were numerous men posted outside the house. There were normally five to six men, but today, the number seemed to have increased to at least a double.  That was strange. Why the sudden security? Was Jamie worried she would run away after what happened?&

86. An end

Jamie simply couldn’t fathom how news about his marriage to Emma could’ve spread so fast.  It was only a few days ago that he broke the news to his father who later swore to have only revealed it to his mother. However, as he returned home from town, he was convinced that he had heard the gossip in whispers from plenty of people around. It was evident in the way they regarded him the entire afternoon. The news had also reached his private residence where Emma was currently staying. Rafa had paid her a visit yesterday, and he revealed that she was rather surprised to know of her new title. The Luna.  “Oh, now that you’re here.” His father said as he spotted Jamie walking toward his room. Forced to halt, he turned around to regard his fa

87. No choice

“Jamie is here?” Emma said in surprise upon hearing the maid. She had been talking to her colleague when Emma walked in and overheard their conversation. They were talking about changing the dinner menu now that they had another person to serve and before they could complain about it, Emma had interrupted them. “Err… Master Chris is here.” She replied, looking at her with confusion. Chris? Who the hell was that? “He had arrived in the morning and had been working in his office room since then.”Office? Only Jamie had his office room here. Is that who they were referring to? It must be him.“Why wasn’t I

88. Drunken words

Jamie chugged his fifth glass of whiskey that night. The bitter taste of the liquid was beginning to soften on his tongue, making his head feel lighter. 89. Anything in the world

He could not understand why that instead of him, it was Emma that was enraged with that question. She had an accusatory hint in her eyes that she struggled to fight, revealing her true feelings after all. In a small voice, she finally said, “Because I was afraid of you.”  “Afraid of me?” He said, “Emma, you’re the safest with me!”  She shook her head, “No, I’m not.” Tears surfaced in her eyes, “I know the truth, Jamie. You can quit lying.”  Lying? What the hell was she talking about? There was clearly something amiss with the situation. He was entirely clueless about what she was referring to. No matter how much it annoyed him, he suppressed his anger and instead remained patient with her.

90. What was to come

Emma’s head was spinning. What the hell was happening? How did it all come down to this? As she stared at him in disbelief, pieces began to fall in place. And instead of relief, she felt the pain of regret spread through her body. What the hell had she done? “Your aunt fucking lied to you.” He said, “I found out you were a rogue when I came to your house that day. There was precious evidence about your identity in those files and I knew that I couldn’t let anyone know of it. I tried my best to hide it, but perhaps your aunt and uncle were already aware.” Emma’s eyes welled with tears as she fell to the ground. How cruel did her aunt have to be? How could she imagine doing such a thing? She felt Jamie’s hands cup her cheek as he knelt before her. Tilting her face up, he said, “I knew that there was no way I could protect you from the brother, because at any given time, there are hundreds of people trying to hunt you down.” He said, “And the only way I could stand a chance at prot
