He could not understand why that instead of him, it was Emma that was enraged with that question. She had an accusatory hint in her eyes that she struggled to fight, revealing her true feelings after all. In a small voice, she finally said, “Because I was afraid of you.”
“Afraid of me?” He said, “Emma, you’re the safest with me!”
She shook her head, “No, I’m not.” Tears surfaced in her eyes, “I know the truth, Jamie. You can quit lying.”
Lying? What the hell was she talking about? There was clearly something amiss with the situation. He was entirely clueless about what she was referring to. No matter how much it annoyed him, he suppressed his anger and instead remained patient with her.
