Chapter 31 - Blazing flames.

My eyes flashed open, startled from the sudden bang outside my room, I bolted upright and as I tried to blink the sleepiness away, I could hear raised voices in the distance. I quickly leapt out of bed and opened my bedroom door to see Talon chucking his cloak over his shoulders and flash out of the doors, leaving them wide open. Within seconds I ran, curious to know what made him dash off so quickly in the middle of the night. I peeped around the door to see him standing down the hallway looking over the balcony down to the hall below. I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to clear them from their fogginess, when the smell of smoke hit me and I realised it wasn’t my eyes that were foggy, but the air. I darted over to him and looked down to see the main castle doors were in flames as Kyan, Zekan, Del and others were rushing to put the blazed fire out. I stood in shock as I watched the commotion, looking from them to Talon, his face with a stern and furious expression. “How did all

Chapter 32 - A way out.

I felt so much more refreshed after the shower and I quickly braided my wet hair and put on a clean pair of jeans and a top, then went to wait in the main chamber room. I looked at the old wooden grandfather clock to see it was already gone five in the evening and Talon still wasn’t back. I sat at the table as Kyan then walked in. “Are they back yet?” I asked. “No, no sign of them yet”. He shook his head as he took a seat to my left at the table. “Don’t worry Ellie, they’ll be ok”. “I hope so”. I replied as I realised I was bouncing my leg in worry. “I have to admit, I’m really surprised you were so worried to see my father go. I mean he’s a vampire, aren’t you supposed to be glad?” “Really?” I shot back with irritation. “He’s been so good to me and….. I trust him completely. I’ll be honest though, I am surprised myself!”. “Yea?” He asked with a smile. “Yes!” I chuckled. “I just never expected to care so much, but I do, rather a lot actually”. “Well, I can s

Chapter 33 - Sweet little human

Kyan's POV: I sat at the table in father’s quarters as I waited for him to come out of his study. I kept glancing at Ellie, sitting in her chair. I could see the book she was reading wasn’t distracting her enough from whatever was on her mind. She never looked at the book for long and kept staring out the window. I couldn’t tell if she was looking for an answer or an escape. She was particularly quiet today, no smile, no joy in her voice when she said ‘good morning’ to me today. Can’t say I blame her… she spent all day yesterday worrying about my father, only to be woken up in the middle of the night to be accused of something she had no control over. I hated the fact that I did trust Ellie! Zekan was right in his thinking, we knew from experience the majority of humans couldn’t be trusted and only a few months ago I would have voiced the same shit Zekan did last night. It was fucking crazy how much I could just feel that she was trustworthy. When he questioned her, it didn’t

Chapter 34 - Dear mum

Ellie's POV: I waited with anticipation in the main hall with Talon, Kyan, Zekan and Lyra, for Mayor Jackson to arrive. Even with Lyra’s constant bitching about him coming here, I couldn’t wait to see a friendly face from town, a reminder that life outside this castle still exists. “How do we know he won’t betray us?” Lyra remarked for the tenth time as she clicked clacked in her heels across the floor and sat down in a huff at the table. “He’s a fucking mayor with a town full of people to keep safe! He knows he’d be a fool if he went against his word”. Talon snapped back at her. “Well, the whole town could be in on it for all we know… every single person!” She stretched out the last part as an attempt to dig at me. “Are we including the toddlers that can barely talk let alone hold a weapon!” I commented back. “No, just the ones roughly eighteen and above… remind me little weakling how old are you?” She replied with a sour grin. “Twenty actually!” I said with a ca

Chapter 35 - While we wait

Kyan's POV: Over the last week since the mayor's visit, it feels as if we’ve all been on house arrest. The only air and daylight we see is when we’re doing guard duty on the towers. In some ways I can’t complain because of the extra hours me and Zekan were now putting in, it kept me away from Ellie, not that it stopped me thinking of her though. But, of course, today, father decided to throw another spanner in my aim to keep my distance by including me in his surprise for her. We never really bothered to celebrate it before, but now she’s here he wanted to make an effort. I couldn’t blame him, she’s tried hard to help out with bringing us all refreshments and extra food with Constance and Bianca, to lessen their workload and keep up our strength. Only the other night, when Melanie, Stuart, Faye and Duncan had retired for the day and were sleeping, Ellie took it upon herself to fix us all something to eat at two in the morning so we wouldn’t go to bed hungry. Kiko’s also been

Chapter 36 - Don’t leave me

Ellie's POV: I sat at the table in Talon’s suite eating apple spiced turnovers that Melanie and Stuart made me for breakfast, when I mentioned yesterday it was a traditional dessert my mum had always made. I was pretty full after the first one, but I greedily bit into another as Talon went into his study to answer a call. “Good morning”. I greeted Kyan and Zekan as they both came into the room. “Good morning”. Kyan smiled momentarily as it vanished as quickly as it came. “Good morning Ellie”. Zekan replied in a softer tone than usual. I must have looked at him in shock, when I heard him not only acknowledge me but refer to me by my name rather than as ‘human girl’! My face must have made it obvious what I was thinking, cause with that Zekan chuckled as they both joined me at the table. “Don’t be too surprised Ellie, I did say I’d get off your back”. “Well, I appreciate it and it’s nice to see you have other facial expressions than just a frown!”. I humoured, which ea

Chapter 37 - Your pain.

Kyan's POV: As I let go of her hand, I felt myself panic the moment she turned away and walked back into her town. We all waited, not a word muttered as we watched everyone trying to clean away their world that had just been destroyed. We could already hear the faint cries from some of her people while others tried to take care of them. I could smell the blood being washed away and with every step she took, my heart thumped, preparing myself to dash in and grab her in an instant if there was still danger lurking in their midst. I saw her approach a broad, rotund man. They spoke only for a brief moment when he was suddenly taking her away. I felt myself breathing heavily, hoping he was taking her to her parents where they were safe and she’d be able to hold them after all this time she'd spent away from them. “Oh shit!” I heard Zekan whisper behind me as we saw her standing next to a long row of sheet covered bodies, with the man she left with, kneeling down next to one. Chapter 38 - The heartbroken.

Kyan's POV: For two days she hasn’t left her bed, she’s barely eaten and she’s practically inconsolable. We’ve barely left her alone, trying to encourage her to eat something or talk. I’ve tried to sit with her in between duties and when I’ve not been around, father and Kiko have looked in on her, even Faye and Melanie have tried to comfort her. On top of that, we are all even more on edge now. We knew it would take a lot for father to convince the mayor the attack was nothing to do with us and then, somehow, even if he believed father, the town would have to believe it too. It was only a matter of time until the hunters closed in on us and the rogue vampires wiped out the rest of the town. It felt as though all of a sudden our entire island was being targeted even though we had lived in peace for years. To say my father was stressed in an understatement, he was now checking every window, every entrance into the castle and had been participating in duties himself. Only yes

Chapter 39 - Dreams and reality

Ellie's POV: I woke up, blinking open my eyes that felt almost as dry as my mouth and I could see by the light shining through my curtains onto the wall, it was daytime. My stomach sank once again, just as it did every time I woke up from my perfect dreams. I’d sleep and see her just as she always used to be… smiling, happy, dancing! Then the moment my eyes opened, I’d see her face breathless in my arms and the reality would hit me, like I was seeing it for the first time all over again. I pushed myself up against my pillows, relieved to see the glass of water on my nightstand. I gulped it and felt the coolness run through my body, finally hydrating myself, but unfortunately it didn’t wash away the heaviness in my chest. I can barely even remember coming back here. I knew someone was holding me and in my mind I saw Kyan. I wanted it to be Kyan, but I only noticed the cold breeze, but just for an instant before, I slipped back into the peaceful darkness of my sleep. I h

Chapter 40 - When I go

Two days later: “Does the coat fit ok?” Talon asked as I put on the black coat he had insisted I wear with the black knee length dress that belonged to Cecelia. “It’s perfect!”. I replied, trying to muster a smile, but I was thankful for him letting me wear these clothes. It’s not like I had packed anything smart enough to wear, especially for something like today. “I know today will be very hard on you Ellie”. He said with a long sigh. “Me and the whole town”. I said as I flopped down onto a chair at his room table. “I very much wish I could be there to help you through it. If there was a way….” “Of course, I know you would!” I interrupted him, not wanting him to feel any guilt for me having to go alone. “I’ll be ok. I have my friends and my dad will be there!”. “I know… I just”. “You worry!” I smiled a watery smile. “You’ve worried and kept me safe the whole time I’ve been here”. I told him as I got up and walked over to him, placing my hands in his. “So, f
