41 // Out and About

If someone asked her why she was doing this, she would never answer because she also did not have the answer. She could not explain why she, a 28-year-old, was letting a 20-year-old girl, turning 21 in December, drag her around. Maybe because she had a beautiful smile that shined brighter than the stars or that she was Shannon Botha, her new roommate. MJ could not tell. They were currently cramped in a taxi with fifteen people, and MJ was already regretting coming. The taxi had fourteen seats- four in the backseat, three in the second row, three on the third row, and four on the first row. The seats in the second and third row were separated; there was one seat for two people and the other was detached and was for one person. When the people at the back wanted to get out, the people sitting on the single chairs had to step out so that the people exiting could close the chair to clear the way. Unfortunately, MJ happened to be sitting in the second row, and h

42 // Family Affairs

Either this was a trick, or Danielle had scored a big shot this time around. Meryl thought as she walked into the five stars restaurant where she was to have dinner with her family and new brother-in-law. If it were not for Anita who pushed her into a corner, Meryl would not have come. She and her older sister did not have a good relationship. Her 35-year-old sister, Danielle, thought Meryl was uptight and that she thought she was better than everyone else. Everything to her was a competition; if she was not competing with Meryl, she was competing with the other two; Rachel and Tiffany. Meryl did not understand why Danielle felt threatened by her, the last born in the family; sometimes Meryl wished she were their older brother because Danielle did not care what he did with his life. Her sister was competitive, but that was not the reason Meryl dreaded attending this dinner. The exact same reason why they were here was the reason she would rathe

43 // Point Blank

The next morning, MJ woke up at five and got ready for her jog. It was her routine back in London to go for a run every morning at five, but she strayed a little when she got to Cape Town. She wore navy blue tracksuits and navy blue trainers, and she had a water bottle, her phone and earphones in her hands. She left the apartment building and ran in the same direction as she took the previous day, as if jogging to work. She and Jameson had had a great time. They spoke about the old school days and Jameson told her who got knocked up, who dropped out, and who broke up. MJ did not even remember half the people he spoke about, but she listened anyway. Jameson was a gossip mogul, but that was partly why MJ liked him; he knew things and he knew people. MJ reckoned that he would come in handy in keeping Logan Parker from finding out the truth. She had a great weekend. It started bad with the whole Logan-Carmen issue and her anxiety attac

44 // Caught In The Act

“Hey, Natasha, is Mr Parker here yet?” MJ asked Natalia as soon as she arrived at Parker’s Enterprises. It was already late, and the stares she received were enough to confirm that, although she was pretty sure that they were only staring at her because of her outfit. “It is Natalia.” Natalia chuckled lightly. “And why are only coming to work at this time on your third day? You should be glad Mr Parker is not here yet.” She said, pushing a strand of hair behind her ear. MJ raised an eyebrow at Natalia; why would Logan not have come in all day? It was already past two in the afternoon. “He’s closing a new business deal today.” Natalia answered her unspoken question. MJ nodded. Mosetsana snorted and muttered under her breath, “If Carmen is a business deal.” This earned her a jab on the ribs by Natalia. Mosetsana looked up and found MJ staring at her. She smiled at MJ and said, “Sorr

45 // Boycott

It was around 7p.m. and MJ was getting ready for her dinner with Jameson and his mom. He was going to pick her up at 8p.m. since she did not know where he stayed. To top it off, Shannon and Liam had not returned from their shopping. So basically, she had no driver. She had just finished drying her hair and was walking around her room in her matching white underwear when her new phone rang up. She walked to her bed and checked the caller’s ID, but it was an unknown number, but she knew it was Logan. She swiped the screen and answered the call, “Hello?” “May, this is Logan speaking. Where are you?” He asked, and MJ rolled her eyes. Who else would it be? She thought. “At home.” She said and crossed her arms while scanning through her clothes, not sure what to wear. “Listen; there is an important meeting tonight.” Logan said, and MJ closed her eyes and pursed her lips. When she did

45.5 // Boycott Too

“May, wanna dance with me?” Kyle asked, and MJ raised an eyebrow at him. “They are playing my favourite song next.” Logan tensed and gave him a death stare. “No.” Logan said and looked at MJ as if daring her to accept. MJ gave him a look and grinned at Kyle. “Of course.” She said coolly and took his hand. Logan gritted his teeth and slammed his fist on the table, and his blood was boiling as he watched Kyle move around the dance area with MJ. Kyle was Logan’s biggest rival in the business industry in Cape Town, but their rivalry went way back before they even knew they were going to be business tycoons. Logan knew that Kyle was only dancing with MJ to get to him. He was probably mad because his wife, Snegugu Khumalo-Davids preferred to collaborate with Logan than him. “Hey, partner.” Snegugu greeted Logan and placed her manicured hand on his shoulder. “Wanna da

46 // Everyday Blues

Logan and Natalia were in his office, and Natalia was seated on the chair opposite Logan while going through online articles about MJ Billings. She was currently going through her Facebook and reading comments after Logan stumbled upon an article that spoke about Jorge Billings and MJ Billings being the best business moguls in the world. “Jeez! Logan, this girl is trending, even more than your article.” Natalia exclaimed while scrolling through her phone, and for the first time ever, Logan looked up from his laptop screen. “What article?” He asked, and Natalia shrugged. "The article about you and the mysterious woman from last night." She said without glancing up for a second; she was so fascinated by MJ Billings that she did not even realize or notice the sombreness that crossed Logan's face a second ago. "There's not even a single picture of her on the internet. I wonder how she looks. Some people say she is blonde lik

47 // Dark Tides

The day went by as fast as the wind and before she knew it, MJ was at the Petersen’s having dinner with Jameson and his mother, Mrs Petersen, who preferred to be referred to as Miss Dos Santos or by her first name, Reina. Reina's house was not that big or fancy although both she and her son earned enough, it was big enough for both of them and that was what MJ found special about it. Dinner was going well, but MJ could not help but think about how her day went. Logan had ignored her the entire day and had the staff up on their toes the whole day. She wanted to think about anything other than Logan Parker, but it could not be helped, so she let her mind wander to other things, specifically the dinner. “So…MJ, how is your brother?” Reina asked. MJ played with her food while thinking of an answer. She had not spoken to Jorge in a while because they stayed in different houses and worked in different places. Although Jorge w

48 // Conflict of Interest

It was after 8 p.m. when Jorge and Anita arrived at his beach house in Cape Town. Unlike his sister, Jorge was not very fond of drivers. The only time he had someone drive him around was when he was way too busy, thus upon arrival at the airport, Jorge hired a cab to bring them home. “Wow, you have a beautiful home.” Anita said to Jorge while scanning his house. “Thanks. MJ bought it for me.” He smiled at the mention of his sister. He agreed that she did a good job at doing things that he disapproved of, but he did not stay mad at her for too long. She was his sister and his most treasured creation on earth. "She's bought a couple of houses for me, mostly in holiday resorts." He said, scanning through his sitting room. "But this is my favourite." He said and smiled. “Do you want something to drink?” He asked Anita who carefully sat down on the black leather couch as if she would ruin it. “Yes, please. J

49 // Competition

Jameson's mother, Reina Dos Santos, entered the big gates of Pollsmoor Maximum Security Prison. She gave in her details and was sent to Medium C prison, where adult males who were sentenced up to one year or were on day-parole, or about to be released were held. She never thought she would ever consider visiting her brother in prison, but after hearing her son’s confession, she had been thinking about it all night, and she went there first thing in the morning before going to work. The guards searched her and she slowly walked into the visiting room where she sat down on the bench and awaited her brother’s arrival. She kept tapping her foot on the floor and the guard gave her a warning look, and she stopped, but immediately started tapping her fingers on the wooden table. She looked around her and there were more people who came to visit their families and friends. She was getting more and more nervous as time passed. Three minutes
