50 // Bringing in The Troops

He knew what he was doing was dangerous, but he had to do something before someone got hurt, especially if that someone was going to be his stubborn little sister. He had been trying to get hold of her since his conversation with MJ Billings, but she was not taking his calls and she was blue-ticking him on WhatsApp. It would appear that Shannon Botha was willingly staying with MJ Billings and that she was unaware that MJ was holding her hostage. Stupid conclusion, but what was he supposed to think? He had seen what MJ Billings was capable of; there was no murder history, but if she was capable of destroying people and their businesses, as well as making threats with the entire world watching; then she was capable of anything. That kind of a woman was to be feared. He was currently seated at a corner table at Steers, waiting for his cousin, Amber, to arrive. After her fight with Shannon, Amber had done a good job at making herself scarce, especi

51 // Headlines

Jorge and Anita spent their entire morning trying to evaluate the extent of MJ’s fury, and it was not good at all. Companies were being shut down. Five companies were closed within a span of eight hours and many shares had dropped by at least fifty percent. Many people were out of jobs and they were protesting against their former employers for their salaries. It was only the 26th of April today; some employees were supposed to be paid yesterday, but they were not. People were angry, and Jorge saw it safe to stay away because after all, he was a Billings - the brother of the woman who ruined their lives. They had an early day, so Anita suggested that they go back to the beach house and take a nap before their next meeting. However, it would appear that Jorge wanted anything but to rest because the moment they came back, he went to dive at the beach, followed by a shower. After taking a shower, he went to the kitchen to grab a snack when something caug

52 // Enemy Lines

The next morning while Jameson was getting ready for work, his mother was seated in their sitting room, waiting for him. She was not working because it was a holiday. It was the 27th of April, a South African public holiday known as Freedom Day, which celebrated freedom and commemorated the first post-apartheid elections held on that day in 1994. The elections were the first non-racial national elections where everyone of voting age of over eighteen from any race group, including foreign citizens permanently resident in South Africa, was allowed to vote. “Morning, Ma.” Jameson greeted and kissed her on the cheek. “Morning, Ricardo.” She gave him a sad smile. He noticed the sadness in her eyes and squatted before her. “Ma, wat gaan aan? (Ma, what is going on?)” He asked in concern. “Please sit down.” She said and patted on the space next to her, and he joined her on the co

53 // Reunion

MJ had just settled into her new office when Lola came to see her. “Hey, May, I just got off the phone with Sonya. Did you by any chance leave someone in the apartment?” Lola asked cautiously. “Yes, why?” MJ asked. "Uhm…Sonya says she received a call from Mr Brown; he says that someone has been blaring music loud every day all week." Lola said. MJ sighed and looked up from her laptop screen. She had totally forgotten about Shannon. The girl was scarce nowadays that MJ thought maybe she had gone back to varsity. “It is Shannon, your sister-in-law.” She said as she closed her laptop, and then she stood up and packed up her things. “You should probably come and have a word with her; I can’t deal with a teenager right now.” She said to Lola, and about less than thirty minutes later, they were parked outside the apartment building. They sat in the car in silence, and MJ’

54 // Fence Sitter

Being a billionaire had its own advantages. For instance, you did not have to book a plane ticket and wait for hours at the airport for the plane to board, and you did not have to go through many queues. In less than three hours, Jorge had landed in Durban in his private jet, and a few minutes later, he was literally running into an enormous building in Durban. His hotel. The staff members knew him and greeted him on the way, but were shocked when he replied with curt nods, and not with his usual radiant smiles. He went to the last floor where there was only a single suite, which belonged to him. He used his private card to open the suite and he stormed into the sitting room. “GET OUT!” He shouted at the three women who were busy massaging another woman. They stormed out of the suite without looking back. “Jorge!” Sonya jumped off the sofa, shocked to see an angry Jorge. “What are you doing here?” She cleared

55 // Sweat Tears and Cocktails

There was nothing Logan hated more than loitering the streets at night; it was too dangerous for a man of his status. Not that anything would happen to him, because he had Thuso by his side. The guy would literally take a bullet for him. He was married, with a kid, and instead of spending time with them, he was out here in the cold with Logan, to rescue a wild teenage girl. The call Logan had received while he was at the restaurant with Jorge, was from a bartender from one of Thuso's clubs. The person named Max told Logan that Shannon was wasted, and she was busy dancing on the tables. He asked Logan to come and get her before she does something stupid. When Thuso and Logan arrived at the club, there was no parking spot; even Thuso’s reserved space was taken, so while Thuso was still looking for a parking spot, Logan went into the club on his own. At the entrance of the club stood two big guys, guarding the door and checking ID’s of

56 // Diamond Hearts

MJ was about to go to go to bed when someone banged on her door. She had stayed up all night, waiting for Shannon to show up while at the same time expecting Jorge to come and confront her. If it were up to her, they would never have to discuss her past, but with her brother, this was a conversation they needed to have. Jorge would never let her past go because he felt guilty. He blamed himself for every single thing MJ encountered, every scar she bore, and every tear she shed. He was the only guardian and protector she ever had, and one slip up, she was ruined for good. MJ knew that Jorge knew she stayed in the streets for a few months, but he was in denial; he refused to accept that his sister suffered alone while he was living his luxurious life. MJ knew they were going to have this talk sooner or later, but she did not expect it to be now at 10 p.m. on a Thursday evening. The louder the knock got, the more she stalled.

58 // Love and Despair

“What did you say happened to your eye again?” Reina asked, sipping on her coffee. Jorge Billings was seated at La Café with Reina after he had accidentally bumped into her on his way from Parker’s Enterprises. “I slipped in the bathtub.” Jorge said, eating his brownies. “You said you ran into the door.” She laughed so hard and clutched her stomach. “Great, now you are laughing at me.” Jorge pushed his chair back and got up to leave, but she stopped him. “Okay! I’m sorry, please sit down.” She said in between laughs and pulled him down. He sighed and sat down. “Is everything okay here?” Antonina asked and looked between the two with wonder. It had been a long time since she had seen or heard Reina laugh, or seen the twinkle in her eyes. Reina gave her a radiant smile, and Antonina gasped, but quickly covered it up. S

59 // Girls Night

It was almost time to knock off and Logan had missed his lunch, so he was very hungry and tired. He had spent most of his day hiding in his office. After the article, Sasha wrote about him and after firing Demi, he did not want to face any more people. He had told Natalia to cancel all of his meetings for the day. He looked at his watch and sighed. He got up and took his jacket and phone, and left his office. He could not stay locked up in his office all day, people had probably forgotten about that little lie she put in the article, because the article was about Kyle. Besides, Sasha had been dealt with. Yes, she pretty much still had her job, but she was suspended for three months after Logan called in a favor with the owner of the publication. Her punishment was not enough, but her boss insisted that it was all he could offer because Sasha was one of the best journalists they had, and he could not afford to lose her. Logan arrived on the grou
