01 || POWER HOUSE

Laughter and chattering filled the building as the workers moved about their workstations as if hit by a wave of eureka. Although the employees of Billings Corporation looked carefree, they were anything but and hopelessly aimed to impress their boss. It was 7:15 a.m., exactly fifteen minutes into the workday, and their boss were still not at work. Most of the time, their boss was here before 7 a.m. to avoid running into any one of them; most of the employees did not even know whom they were serving, but they had been warned about the tyrant of a boss and how they had to be punctual because their boss hated tardiness. Another thing they had been warned about was noise; they were told that the boss hated noise, so they had to be as quiet as possible- something they never failed. They feared a force they had never met. It was a shock when the entire building fell into silence. It was as if the place had suddenly turned into a graveyard filled with d

It was around 5 p.m. when MJ arrived outside her friend's apartment building. Liam never thought MJ Billings had friends. The only person close to a friend he knew was Anita. MJ never spoke about this friend. He had never heard of her. When they arrived at the building, she was colder and the hatred on her face was inevitable. She stepped out of the car and watched as an elegant woman who looked like she had just stepped out of a magazine stepped out of the huge building, simply wearing blue denim jeans, a white top, a light woollen navy blue jersey, and black push-in sleepers. She was a white woman probably in her early thirties. She was slender and had long, dark hair that reached below her shoulders. “May Jeanette!” She squealed, but MJ returned a tight-lipped smile. “Call me that again, and you will regret ever calling me.” She threatened, and Sonya Smith’s smile faded. “It’s good to see you too!” Sonya said sarcastical

MJ and Liam drove to a new restaurant that had just opened Bon Appétit, and then MJ ordered him to join her for dinner. “Me?” He asked, not believing that MJ Billings invited him to have dinner with her at a fancy restaurant. He consciously smoothened his suit, fixed his white shirt and tie, and then he bent towards the car mirror to fix his hair. “Auburn!” He jumped at his boss’ cold voice and bumped his head in the process. He quickly straightened up and hurried to where she stood. “I hate waiting.” She said with a blank face and walked into the restaurant. Liam took in a shaky breath and followed her inside. Once inside, they were greeted by a young coloured waitress. "Hello and welcome to Bon Appétit." She said warmly, and MJ took a liking in her immediately. "Please follow me this way." She said and led them to their table. "Here are our menus, please call me when you are ready to order." She said once they were seated. "Thank you

04 || Fire Pit

The monstrosity of a white mansion stood out in the outskirts of the city of Cape Town; its beauty illuminating the quiet and bare neighbourhood. The yard was so wide and spacious that it could accommodate an entire community of squatters. It was fenced with long, simple white walls accompanied by huge black gates and a small white security house. Flowers of different kinds adorned the front yard and a big, beautiful fountain stood at the centre. A huge balcony stood in the middle, dividing the two wings, its brown wooden chairs, and tables, beautiful artificial flowers, and trees giving it a natural look. The huge glass sliding doors behind the white couches and coffee table only increased one's curiosity on what lay behind the beautiful scenery. The expensive cars littering the yard as well as the security posted at every corner were a clear indication that the owner of this beautiful exhibit was well off. The backyard was almost like a replica

MJ Billings did not want to find herself in the company of the woman who made her life a living hell. After what happened at the restaurant, all she wanted to do was to shoot at something; it was a pity that she could not put a face to the man who had slurred at her. She did not understand why some men had to be perverted. It was as if all they could muster was trampling all over women like dirt under their shoes. They refused to see a woman's worth; all they saw in a woman was a new set of bedding to cover their beds for the night. Just the thought of it made MJ hate the man even more. Throughout the entire ride, her mind kept wandering off to the stranger. She wanted to know who he was so that the next time she saw him, she would smash the bottle on his stupid head. Usually, she was good at containing her anger, but his resilience and Sonya Smith’s threats pushed her hand. Sonya had been sending her threats during the entire dinner. If anyone no

The next morning, Sonya was shocked to find MJ working on her laptop. She looked like she had just taken a shower and was wearing a black gown, and her hair was wet. “Good morning.” Sonya greeted, letting her presence known. MJ ignored her and took a sip of her tea while she continued staring at her screen. Sonya snarled at her and walked to the kitchen island to prepare herself some cereal. She took her bowl, plopped down next to MJ, and then she threw her feet on the coffee table. MJ watched her from the corner of her eye. Sonya was wearing blue jeans, a pitch shirt, and her feet were covered in white socks. They sat there in silence; MJ sitting with her back facing Sonya while she sat Indian style on the couch with her laptop placed on the armrest. Sonya kept scowling at MJ’s back while annoyingly eating her cereal, making sure that the spoon clicked against the ceramic bowl. “We have to go and see my boss today before I leave.” She finally spoke up and gr

07 || Friends and Foes

Walking into Billings' Cooperation, the man expected the place to be well organized and silent, but to his surprise, the place was as loud as a zoo during tourist hours as the people walked around freely, doing what they were paid to do. He took in a deep breath and sauntered to the reception desk where the blonde secretary was busy talking on the phone. David Botha was never the man to ask for favours, but desperate times called for desperate measures, and right now he was desperate. Having worked as a private detective for over twenty years, he had travelled the world and had a lot of connections worldwide. He was the best private detective ever known and worked for rich people. He had never been in this part of London before and had never stepped foot into a single building belonging to the Billings. “Hello, how may I help you?” The blonde woman asked, giving him a warm smile. “Hi, I am here to see Jorge Billings.” He sa

08 || Sketchy Lines

“What woman?” Sonya asked, confused by the sudden change in both their demeanours. They seemed to be getting along very earlier when they were busy insulting her, but right now they looked like all they wanted to do was to rip each other apart. “The woman who emptied an entire bottle of champagne on me last night.” Logan gritted angrily. MJ gave a sarcastic laugh and ran a tongue over her teeth at the confession. “So you are the bastard from last night, huh?” She said, gritting her teeth. Logan’s own temper flared and he narrowed his eyes at her. “What did you just call me?” He asked. “You heard me, bastard.” MJ mocked, and Sonya took this chance to intervene as she stood between them and placed her hand on Logan to stop him from lunging at MJ. The tension in the room was palpable that Sonya wished the floor could just swallow her up, it literally felt like being in a kraal with two bulls. “Guys, I’m sure there

09 || Potholes Down The Lane

“Hey, was that Sonya Smith’s lawyer?” A tall, dark-skinned Indian woman asked in awe as she barged into Logan’s office. Logan rolled his eyes as she threw herself on the black couch standing against the wall. Logan briefly looked up and narrowed his eyes at her as she laid flat with her feet on the couch while her shoes were still on. “She can’t even afford to pay her rent upfront, how the hell would she even afford a lawyer?” He scoffed before he turned to his laptop screen and continued to type. “Especially one as fancy as her, right?” The woman said dreamily, causing Logan to roll his eyes; a habit he had whenever she was around. "She is not her lawyer; she is her sister," Logan said, and the woman threw her feet off the couch, stood up, and walked up to his desk before settling on the chair opposite him. “I didn’t know Sonya had a sister.” She said, a frown

Chapter 10 || The Devil's Not An Advocate

“You can’t tell anyone about this.” Logan Parker warned the bubbly woman who had her hand slung over his as they walked into Parker’s Enterprises at 12.p.m. “I won’t tell anyone, I promise.” Natalia proclaimed loudly so that everyone could hear her, and then she shot Logan an innocent grin when he groaned. Logan walked her to her desk where the other two secretaries were packing their things, getting ready to leave for lunch. “Hey, it is lunchtime.” She said in mock shock when her partners walked around the desk. “Now this is not a sight Carmen would like to see.” One of the secretaries said as she stood in front of Logan and Natalia. Everyone knew they were close and were used to seeing them together, especially since Natalia was Logan’s secretary. She was supposed to work with him on the top floor; she even had her own office and a desk outside his office door. However, Natalia refused to work upstairs, claiming that the place was too quiet and
