31 // Coffee Machine

Logan had invested so much money into this plan of his. He had gotten her Apple electronics only; a laptop, phone, and tablet, and they were all registered under May Smith, and all three of them had her email address on them, but if Logan thought she was going to use his things; he had another thing coming.  As if reading her mind, her new phone rang and Logan’s name flashed on the screen. If the phone was not so loud and she did not have a headache, she was probably not going to answer it. Unfortunately, the bloody thing was getting louder by the minute. MJ groaned and answered the call, “Yes?”  “I’m still waiting for my coffee, Miss Smith. I like my coffee strong, with two sugars and a lot of milk.” Logan said and hung up on her. MJ groaned and slammed the phone on the desk, and prayed to all the gods she could think of, that the bloody thing was broken.  She got up and left her office, and went to the private kitchen, which she had to search

32 // Airhead

“Now that everyone is here, we can start. Can we all please turn to page 3 of the file?” Aaron McEnroe Junior said as he opened the blue file in front of him. Everyone else had the same file, but none of them opened it. Aaron looked up and noticed that no one was doing anything; everyone was just sitting and looking at him. “Can we-” He started but was cut off by an arctic cold voice. “We are not here to discuss strategies on how we can make your company money; we are here to discuss how to get your company back on its feet again. I invested a lot of money into this project, and I lost ten times more, so spare me the bullshit.” All heads turned to look at Javier Mendoza in shock, but he just shot them a glare that sent most of them back home. Well, except for Jorge and Anita; Anita was looking at him with wide eyes, and Jorge merely returned the glare with much force. “I’m afraid, I have to agree with Javier o

33 // Just Married

Hours flew by and before he knew it, it was lunchtime. It had been three hours since Logan had sent MJ to print out some documents and send them to his office, but to his disappointment, there were no documents; he did not think she would defy him so fast. He sighed and got up from his chair. He took off his jacket from the hanger and put it on, and then he fixed his tie and collar before he grabbed his phone off the table and left his office. He walked towards her office and stopped at the door, not believing what he was seeing. Right in front of his eyes was his PA, sleeping. Unfortunately for Logan, she looked so calm and beautiful in her sleep, and that fact was too hard to ignore. Logan walked slowly and carefully to her desk. He walked around the desk and squatted down beside her. Her face was covered by a few strands of her curly hair, and Logan watched how they moved every time she fanned at them with her shallow breaths. He slowly reached for her f

34 // Code of Conduct

Anita Simmons had waited for this day all her life. A few days ago, she would have jumped at the idea of seating at the back of her brother’s car. However, that was not the case anymore; she was in the car with him and she actually wanted to run away from him. The car ride back to his hotel was short, but it felt like the longest ride of her life. All this time, she felt like she was sitting next to a statue - a man that could not talk. She was grateful when the car came to a stop in front of his hotel. The driver stepped out and opened the door for her, and Javier opened his own door. She muttered a small thank you to the driver and followed Javier into the hotel. Everyone seemed to know him, especially the hotel staff. Anita felt really uncomfortable; she did not miss the nasty stares that everyone was giving her, especially the girls who worked at the reception. As if sensing her discomfort, Javier stopped and followed her eyes, and when he caught

35 // Dining With The Enemy

Shannon just stood there and stared at MJ for quite a long time. To say she was shocked would be an understatement of the year. How was it possible that Logan was having lunch with the woman who humiliated him, and how was it possible that this woman was with the same man who insulted her? Was this how rich people lived; dine with their enemies? She looked between the two to see if there was some kind of tension, but to no avail. “Shannon?” Logan asked, surprised. “What are you still doing here? I thought you had quit.” Shannon gave him a tight smile. “Logan, I signed a damned contract that says I have to give a notice, so I’m here to fulfil my task before I can leave.” She said through gritted teeth, and Logan rolled his eyes. “May, this is Shannon, David Botha’s younger sister. Shannon, this is May Smith, Sonya Smith’s sister. She’s standing in for her sister.” Logan intr

36 // Waterworks

“Hi, this is Anita Simmons, and I can’t take your call right now. Please leave a message and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. Thank you.” Meryl was calling Anita for the nth time now in the past two hours. She was the only person left in the building, and she had to lock up. On a daily basis, it was Jorge, MJ, or Anita that locked because they were always the last people to leave the building. Since all of them were out of the country, it was her responsibility to lock up. However, she did not know the passcode to set the alarm, because it changed on a weekly basis, and the only people who knew about it and got an update each time were MJ and Anita since Jorge barely came to the main office. MJ Billings did not trust anyone else but Anita in the entire building and thus shared the password with her. Although Billings Corporation had tight security and there were literally cameras at every single corner, she could n

37 // Surprises

After Logan left MJ at the restaurant, MJ went back to the office and worked on the documents Logan had asked for, and highlighted in some points and edited them. There was only thirty minutes left of work, and she was almost done with the documents. Who could have thought she would actually follow one of his orders and really work for him? She shook her head and sighed. The minutes flew by and it was home time. Logan knocked on MJ’s door and walked in, holding his jacket and briefcase in his left hand, and his phone and keys on his right. His shirt was hanging out, his tie loose, and his hair a mess. He looked tired. “Hi.” He greeted and gave her a small smile. He did not know how to approach her after his behaviour earlier; if he wanted his plans to work, he would have to practice patience. He had to accept that May Smith could not and would not tell him the truth on the spot, thankfully, his behaviour did not jeopardise his plans, and M

38 // Cat Fight

“Please remind me why we are here again?” Liam asked for the nth time. They had only been here for about fifteen minutes, but he was already complaining. They were currently parking in front of the University of Cape Town campus, waiting for the clock to turn to four. What MJ did not realise was that it was almost 5p.m. and that they had been waiting for almost an hour, but she was too occupied to notice. “We are here to meet with Shannon Botha, the girl from the restaurant.” MJ said, leaning against the passenger window as she watched students pile in and out of the building. The University of Cape Town was tremendous. The front view was a sight to see. MJ admired the splendour, but Liam was anything but enthusiastic. “You already said that, what I don’t understand is why we are here, why couldn’t we meet her at the restaurant?” Liam asked, agitated. “Because if we don’t meet with her

39 // Chance Encounter

The next morning, on a Sunday, MJ woke up early and prepared for her morning jog. She needed to clear her head after everything that took place the previous night including Carmen’s pregnancy and Shannon’s fight. She placed her phone on the coffee table and sat down on the couch to put on her Nike trainers. She wore a black Nike sports bra and black Adidas track pants with white stripes on the side. She tied her hair into a messy bun and grabbed her phone and earphones off the table, and then she grabbed a water bottle from the counter and left the apartment. She wore her earphones and took off running once outside the building. It was her first weekend in Cape Town and it had not started well. Logan’s girlfriend, Carmen, had returned and to make things worse, she was pregnant. A lot of things were going to change on Monday, and the fact that Lola would be returning too did not make things any better. Lolitta Leibrandt knew MJ

40 // Roommates

MJ finished having breakfast with Jameson and they both went their separate ways. He had offered to take her back to her apartment, but she insisted on jogging back since him and Logan Parker disturbed her. Jameson agreed, but not before asking her to have dinner with him and his mother at their house tomorrow after work. MJ hesitated for a moment before she agreed, and besides, she was sure her heartbroken guest was not going to leave anytime soon and could use some space. By the time she arrived at the apartment, Shannon was sitting on the kitchen counter in one of Sonya’s robes while eating cereal. She looked better than she did the previous; her face was no longer tearstained, although her eyes were puffy and swollen, and her hair was brushed and tied neatly into a braid. She had a light look on her face despite the absence of her radiant smiles. “Morning.” MJ greeted and walked to the bathroom, not waiting for a response. She took a q
