21 // High Hopes

Meryl was stunned to silence as the jeweller placed the set of expensive rings in front of her. She stared at the rings in awe and shook her head in disbelief; she had expected many things tonight, but this was not even at the back of the list. She had certainly not expected to have a set of expensive diamond engagement rings placed in front of her and asked to choose whichever one she wanted. "Jorge, this is incredible, this is…wow!" She breathed, and Jorge gave her a big smile that melted her heart on the spot. She stared at the rings to keep herself from crying because of the emotions feuding inside of her. "Uhm…I don't know what to choose, there's a lot of options." She said to the jeweller who was not the least interested in the rings but on Jorge. “Choose something that’s gonna make all women wish it was them getting married to me," Jorge said softly, and Meryl nodded and took in a shaky breath before averting her gaze to the b

22 // Staggered Hearts

It was a beautiful morning. Birds were singing, and trees were swaying along with the wind. Heck, even the ants were dancing together in long columns as if preparing for the festive season. Nature was more than happy to welcome summer after a long winter season. However, one specific human being was not joyful. It was one sombre morning. Tons and tons of used tissues were splattered all over the floor. There were clothes and blankets on the floor, empty bottles of ice-wine on the bed and on the floor. The small bedroom was literally a pigsty. The broken-hearted blonde was curled up into a little ball in her pink pyjamas. Her messy hair was tied into a messy bun and her nose and eyes were red from crying, and she had big bags under her eyes. She never imagined that one day she would cry or drink herself to sleep because of a man. She never imagined that someday she would be handed her broken heart on a silver platter, and yet here she was, lying on this bed

23 // Coalition

It was 12 a.m. London time and Jorge had just arrived at Billings Corporation. He was not surprised to find someone else standing behind Meryl's desk but he asked anyway, and the girl told him that both Anita and Meryl were unavailable. He sighed and walked to the elevator, ignoring all the stares he was getting from his employees, but it was to be expected since he had decided to dress up like a secret agent; a black suit and dark shades. He was glad the moment the elevator doors because the stares he was getting were intensifying his headache. Cameron was to blame for all of this; Jorge could not even remember what they were talking about because of the alcohol Cameron kept feeding him. The only thing he remembered was the time when he was telling Cameron about proposing to Sonya. Jorge did not understand how Meryl ended up at his place; he did not remember ordering roses or having them sent to Meryl. There had to be some kind of misunderstanding, or there was a maste

24 // Collision Course

Natalia was getting worried about Logan. He left without telling her where he was going. On normal basis, he would tell her when he was going out, even if he was going to the café a few blocks away.  When they left, Logan’s driver, Thuso, told his wife, Mosetsana, where they were going. Unfortunately, Natalia could not ask her because she had been rude to her all day. It was almost time to knock off but instead of packing up her things, Natalia went to Logan’s office and waited for him there.  A few minutes after settling down on Logan’s chair, Mosetsana came to the office and peeked her head in. “Thuso just called, he says they are on their way from the airport.” She said, and Natalia nodded. “I’ll see you tomorrow then.” She said with a small smile and stuck her head out, about to leave, but Natalia stopped her.  “Mosetsana?” Natalia said in a high-pitched voice, and Mosetsanagape reappeared again. “I’m sorry about earlier.” She said grimly,

25 // Staring Contest

The next morning, Logan Parker had a lot to look forward to; however, he was still a little dazed because of Natalia who had seemed a bit down last night. He had a lot to do for the day, and would not have time to chat to her, thus he arrived at 7a.m. so that he could catch her since she was one of the first few people to arrive.  However, he was shocked when he arrived in his office to find the person he least expected. He stood frozen at his door as he watched her back. “Is everything okay here?” Logan asked, but he was greeted by silence.  He walked to where she was and stood next to her. “It is beautiful, isn’t it?” He asked with his hands in his pockets as his eyes locked on the view outside the window. Parker’s Enterprises was one of the tallest buildings around the area, and one could see most of Cape Town from the top floor.  “Not what I am used to.” She muttered quietly, secretly comparing the view to the view from her office back in L

26 // Smiley Face

“OMG! I just spoke to the hottest guy in the entire universe.” Meryl gushed. Anita rolled her eyes. “How do you know he is hot? You only heard his voice on the phone once.” She stated. “Exactly!” Meryl exclaimed excitedly, and a group of colleagues that were passing by threw her a weird look. “You should have heard his voice, Anita. It was so…how do I put it?” She asked dreamily and sighed. Anita shook her head and smiled. She was a bit shocked this morning when Meryl called her and asked her to pick her up for work, especially since Meryl was serious about quitting yesterday, even when Anita went to see her after work. She was confused by the sudden change of moods and mind. Anita was certain that she would have to buy Meryl a copy of Lemurian Crystals to help mend her heart. “So, who were we talking to?” Anita asked, and just then, Meryl’s phone rang and she

27 // Suits and Aces

MJ had never responded well to alcohol. In fact, she rarely drank alcohol because she did not understand the purpose of drinking at all. Why would someone spend their precious time drowning themselves in alcohol? She did not know the answer to that until today, and her answer was Logan Parker. She did not drink a lot; she just had a few half-filled glasses of the whiskey she found in Sonya’s cupboard. It turned out that her brother was in love with a drunkard. She chuckled at the thought. While she was calling Sonya a drunkard, she was tipsy and was starting to imagine crazy things and do crazy things. One moment, she thought she was crying, but she would not cry now, would she? She never cried. Staring at the blue-covered room made her want to cry, if she had not done it already. MJ sat on top of the couch in Sonya’s apartment and did not fear that she would fall on her back if she was not careful enough. A lot of things ran throug

28 // Clearing The Air

“Wow, we nailed it. Seriously though, Anita, you have to admit that we make a great team.” Jorge Billings beamed as they entered the building together, chatting and laughing. “We do, don’t we?” Anita admitted, a warm smile on her face. She and Jorge were working outside the office and they had a business proposal for one of the biggest businesses in London, and surprisingly, they worked well together. They were walking past the reception when Jorge spotted Meryl scowling at them from the corner of his eye. He knew he was to blame for her behaviour, but they could not continue working like this. If only he knew how she felt at the moment about being in the same building as him. Maybe it was a good thing that she happened to be here at this time of the night. “Hold on.” Jorge said to Anita who fiddled with the pearls around the collar. She nodded, and he walked towards the reception desk. Meryl was so eng

29 // Hungover

“Morning, May, you are very early today!” Natalia shouted as if MJ was deaf. MJ held her head and hurried to the private elevator. She was seriously not in the mood for anything today, not even Logan’s friendly secretary. “What is wrong with her? You know, for a lawyer, she’s rather here too much.” Demi gawked at her. Natalia just looked at her and shrugged. Minutes after May arrived, Logan walked into the building, looking rather too happy on a Saturday. For someone who was all about hard work and profit, Logan was quite looking forward to this half day. “Morning, Natalia.” Logan greeted cheerfully. “Morning, Demi.” “Morning, Mr Parker.” Natalia greeted with narrowed eyes. “Oh! Morning, Mr Parker.” Demi greeted with furrowed eyebrows and went back to whatever she was doing. Demi was one of the few people who did not care whether Logan was on cloud

30 // Ireland

Jorge and Anita arrived in Ireland very early in the morning in order to take a rest before attending the long awaited meeting. Aaron McEnroe was desperate to save his father’s company and had been begging to meet with them for weeks now, but the meeting was impossible with MJ’s sudden business trip and Jorge’s court cases and the taking over of Billings Corporation, so the meeting had to be rescheduled for today. Jorge had only had the pleasure of working with Aaron McEnroe Senior, and never worked with the son. He had only met him a few years back when he was still in high school, and Jorge had to help Mr McEnroe close a business deal. He was still just a little scrawny tall brat back then, with pimples, braces, and glasses. He was the type of boy all girls ran away from, but funny what time and money could do. Baby Aaron was officially a womaniser. If Jorge thought he mistreated women, then he had no idea what the meaning of mistreatmen
