The flashing cameras temporarily blinded me as I tried to get a look at Kira’s expression. Unable to focus on her, I glanced at the crowd and quickly found Kolton. He was right where he’d said he would be. He nodded gravely. He’d been the only person I’d told about this. As a close relative of the female lead, he’d been put up in a nice hotel, though not as nice as Kira’s. He’d literally been throwing up from worrying about his sister. When I broke the news that I was going on the show to help protect her, he’d wept with relief. He’d spent the last few days thanking me profusely, but I could see his worry had returned. Why shouldn’t it? Now, not only his sister but his best friend were going to compete in one of the most dangerous shows in the world.
Kolton raised a hand, waving but not at me. He was trying to get Kira’s attention. My heart thundered. What was he doing? Kira spotted him, and I watched as the two siblings made eye contact. Kolton glanced at me, then back at Kira, shaking his head slowly and deliberately. The message was clear. Don’t tell anyone she knew me.
Kira didn’t answer overtly, but from the set of her jaw and her shoulders, I had to believe she was agreeing. Well, I hoped so, anyway.
Von gestured to the line of alphas, including me, who stood to the side of the stage. “Now, Kira, don’t they all look delicious?” he said, flicking his tongue across one of his long incisor fangs.
That elicited more wild cheering from the crowd. Kira smiled and made a show of sliding her gaze up and down the line of men. She barely paused at my face before moving along.
“They are nice to look at,” Kira said with a laugh.
The audience shrieked again.
Von laughed and leaned forward. “I think the ladies in the crowd agree. Am I right, ladies?”
My head was starting to ache from the raucous crowd. How the hell could they be so excited about this? It was noxious. Ridiculous. Like cocks strutting around hens in a farmyard. But no matter my true feelings, I made sure the confident smile stayed put on my face.
“Kira, are you ready to sink your claws into these hunks over there?”
She leaned forward and put a conspiratorial hand on Von’s thigh. “Oh, I think it would be more fun to sink my teeth into them.”
I bit back a cackle. The tone she was using was the same sickly-sweet voice she slipped into during a sting. That perfect amount of pouty flirtatiousness turned men’s heads into jelly and made it easy for her to get whatever information she could out of them. Everyone else in the crowd, including Von, thought she was a hundred percent serious. The host clapped his hands, and dozens of whooping catcalls erupted from the crowd.
Von stood again and grabbed a microphone from a small table beside his chair. “Let’s get to know our men.”
He walked over to the far end of the line. None of the men had engaged in conversation on the drive over, each of us lost in our thoughts about what was coming. Now was my chance to see how each man reacted. Did they dodge questions, did they lie, were they submissive, confident, cocky, or aggressive? My operative training might help me determine the biggest threat.
At the moment, they all were my biggest threat. Each of them was eyeing Kira like they wanted to eat her for dinner.
“We’ll start backwards based on the pack hierarchy and work down to the First Pack alpha.”
As Von moved down the line getting names, I listened and logged the information in my mind. Ryan from Tenth Pack, a quiet sort and a little intimidated, if I wasn’t mistaken. A young shifter named Leif from Eighth Pack, who kept glancing toward another alpha down the line—perhaps they knew each other. A meaty, muscle-bound alpha named Nathaniel from Seventh Pack, who was the definition of a dickhead. Then another guy named Garrett, who was smiling a lot but didn’t look comfortable being here.
As Von drew closer to me, my eyes finally took in the guy beside me, and I was in for another shock. I knew him. It had been a long time, and his body and hair had changed, but his face was still familiar. Mika Sheen of First Pack. His long dark hair was tied back in a man bun. He turned, his eyes locking on mine. Recognition flashed there, though his face was devoid of emotion. We’d been kids the last time we’d seen each other.
All Mika gave me was a nod of acknowledgment before turning back to watch Von. I wasn’t sure if he would be a threat to me. He came from money and had always been privileged, but even as a kid, he had a tortured soul that wasn’t easy to break. If he was here, he had to be a reject in some way, but that didn’t track with what I knew about him. This contest was getting more complicated by the moment.
Von continued his path. A greasy and selfish acting alpha named Omar from Sixth Pack. Tate from Fifth Pack, who made me nervous for some reason I couldn’t put my finger on. A quiet guy named Abel from Fourth Pack, who seemed to be genuinely happy to be on the show, more so than most of the others. J.D. from Third Pack was full of energy, even wrapping Von in a bear hug. On first impression, he looked like a good enough person, even if he did act a bit like a frat bro. He was the one Leif had eyeballed earlier. I wondered if there’d be drama or fighting between those two during the show.
Even as I tried to memorize all the names, faces, and pack allegiances, I felt like I’d failed. The men all blended together. Once we got to Bloodstone Island, I’d do a better job of getting a bead on each of the contestants.
Then, like magic, Von was in front of me. I could sense the frenetic vampire energy radiating off him. His face was perfectly unblemished.
Centuries of experience had made him the greatest showman on earth. But I was a Tranquility operative. I could see through people. When I looked into his eyes, I saw the truth. No matter how well he played it off or how wide his smile, he had a secret. He was bored out of his mind with his life, and this show was the only way he could find any excitement or drama. It explained why he’d stuck with it for so long. The microphone was under my chin. Kira, Von, and the thousands in attendance stared at me, waiting for me to speak.Clearing my throat, I leaned forward. “Wyatt Rivers, Second Pack.”Von threw an arm over my shoulders. “Greetings, Mister Rivers. Now, Wyatt, what should Miss Durst know about you?”The other men had either flirted with Kira or aggressively told them how much they wanted her. I decided to keep things similar—and mess with her a little.“Well, Von, she needs to know that I protect what’s mine, and she’ll be mine soon. I’m possessive, in a good way, and she needs t
Chapter 13KiraThank the gods Zoe was smart enough to keep her mouth shut about Wyatt. When she climbed into the car with me, her saucer-like eyes said everything that needed to be said. A grim nod from me was all the answer she received. She understood.Zoe’s frenetic energy was even more elevated than usual. Probably exacerbated by the revelation that Wyatt was on the show with me and the general anxiety she and I shared. Whatever it was, she was a bouncing ball of chaotic spirit. She was talking a mile a minute, introducing herself and asking everyone questions. The other men were nervous, and so was I. All we wanted to do was sit and contemplate what was ahead, but Zoe’s voice was like a dull hum over everything that made introspection nearly impossible. It took all I had to keep my pleasant smile and bright-eyed happiness in place. Gods, Wyatt. For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out how he’d done it. The male contestants had been picked more than a month ago, well before I ma
Unbidden, the memories of our night together flashed through my mind—his fingers inside me, his tongue on my skin, his lips at my ear. You damn well can have a good time with me. Those words and the way he’d shown me exactly how much of a good time I could have with him rattled around in my head.“Already got your eye on someone?” Leif asked with a grin.Blinking, I forced myself back to the present. “Huh? Sorry?”His grin broadened. “Those red cheeks…looks like you’re blushing. Maybe one of us has already caught your eye?”I laughed off his comment. “I’m only thinking about how exciting all this is. I don’t know any of you well enough to take a liking yet. We’ve literally just met.”Omar’s jaw clenched at that. He’d obviously assumed he was too good a catch for me not to have already realized he was the goddess’s gift to women. Abel deflated a bit as well, though not in a self-important way. If anything, he appeared to be insecure, especially for an alpha. What was his story?I wante
The floating cameras followed our little group as we traversed the path that led to the stairs up to the front door. A small group emerged from the mansion and met us halfway up the stairs—fae staff members and a burly vampire security guard. They had a quick, hushed conversation with Von before leading us the rest of the way up the steps.I clung to Zoe’s hand as fear seeped into my chest. No amount of positive self-talk would dispel it. Shit just got real. I wished I could keep her by my side the entire time, but that was not a realistic hope. She was here as my stylist, not my bodyguard or companion. At least not in the eyes of the show and its staff.“Everyone, smile,” Von said in a sing-song voice. The hovering cameras swept around to take a group photo of us as we neared the front doors. We all stopped and gave the cameras our best sexy, serious pose. I was sure we all looked glamorous, with our perfect outfits and hair, our sexy smiles and sultry looks against the backdrop of t
I clenched my fists and inhaled through my nose to keep from shifting and ripping the fucking vampire limb from limb. Each and every second, I was reminded why I hated this show. I couldn’t believe they were still doing the mating chamber. I hadn’t watched this thing in over a decade, and this was a fresh reminder of why. Death, blood, and fake romance weren’t enough, so real-life porn was added to the mix to make it really titillating. I’d hoped the mating chamber had been phased out. But why stop something that guarantees ratings, right? I did a poor job hiding my snarl of anger. All the shifters around me looked like they’d anticipated the mating chamber and were looking forward to it. Keeping my cool, I took a step over to look at Kira. If she was bothered about the mating chamber, it didn’t show. She was laughing along with Von.If it killed me, I’d make sure not a single person set foot or paw in that chamber with Kira except me. I didn’t care how smiley and nice some of these g
Most of the men here had probably never run afoul of some of these things and wouldn’t recognize the scents. I, however, had dealt closely with the things that walked the night. I scented a gorgon, a chimera, at least one feral shifter, and, if I wasn’t mistaken, a wyvern. The stories were true. Bloodstone Island really was as dangerous as they said. Even with my training and experience, the sheer number of creatures was enough to douse my guts with cold fear.“Onward, boys. Mustn’t keep the camera waiting,” Von said as he pushed to the front. “Don’t bother shifting if you’re scared. No need. The island is carefully controlled and monitored for the challenges and tasks. This is one such special occasion. I assure you, everyone is safe. Come, come. Don’t dally.” Von strode ahead of us, completely unconcerned.Hadn’t he just made a huge deal about how dangerous it was to be away from the mansion at night? He’d made it sound like the showrunners were controlling more than they let on. De
If I bit the big one on day one, the showrunners wouldn’t bat an eye. With death around every corner on The Reject Project, they always had a few women waiting in the wings. Sentimentality was not a word associated with this show. They’d toss my body in a bag and call up the next female in line. It happened a lot. In fact, when the prize mate died, the show’s ratings went through the roof. But I’d be damned if I let some other woman take the prize. I had too much at stake.Tired of waiting for me to react, the tiger shifter snarled and leaped at me. The orange-and-black fur streaked forward faster than any natural animal. With its claws extended, the shifter swiped at the air by my face. The only thing that saved me from having my throat opened was my reflexes. I bent backward, pulling my face out of range, then danced back to put space between the shifter and myself.I regained my balance just as the cat lunged again, swinging both paws forward to catch me in some kind of deadly hug.
Heaving in lungsful of breath, I disentangled from the creature. The arm I’d used to choke the beast was like rubber, the bicep ready to cramp from the exertion I’d placed on it. I glanced into the crowd and saw a mixture of reactions on the faces there. Most showed shock and awe that I’d beaten the beast without killing it. Others looked annoyed that I’d gone the bloodless route. Wyatt looked as white as a ghost but gave me a grudging nod of respect. I couldn’t help but smirk about that. Did he have that little faith in me? He should know better after all these years.A slow clap started from stage left, and I looked over to see Von walking out as he applauded me.“My goodness, ladies and gentlemen. Look at this beauty,” he said, sweeping a hand toward me. The floating cameras followed his gesture. “I hope the alphas were all watching that. Miss Durst is a very worthy mate indeed. She looks just as good taming the wild beast as she does taming our hearts.”Every word out of his mouth
