Chapter 13
Thank the gods Zoe was smart enough to keep her mouth shut about Wyatt. When she climbed into the car with me, her saucer-like eyes said everything that needed to be said. A grim nod from me was all the answer she received. She understood.
Zoe’s frenetic energy was even more elevated than usual. Probably exacerbated by the revelation that Wyatt was on the show with me and the general anxiety she and I shared. Whatever it was, she was a bouncing ball of chaotic spirit. She was talking a mile a minute, introducing herself and asking everyone questions. The other men were nervous, and so was I. All we wanted to do was sit and contemplate what was ahead, but Zoe’s voice was like a dull hum over everything that made introspection nearly impossible.
It took all I had to keep my pleasant smile and bright-eyed happiness in place. Gods, Wyatt. For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out how he’d done it. The male contestants had been picked more than a month ago, well before I made my desperate attempt to get on the show. Had he gotten someone in the council to pull rank with the network? That didn’t make sense. The council had washed their hands of me. No one would go to bat like that for something so inherently dangerous and stupid.
To get my mind off Wyatt, I swept my gaze across the four guys in the car with me. I needed to get an idea of the type of men I was dealing with. They were all handsome and well-groomed. Makeup artists and hair stylists had probably gone over each of them with a fine-toothed comb before they arrived at the premiere.
They were all glancing furtively at me, eyeing me like they were starving, and I was the last piece of bacon. They all exuded confidence and charisma. I found it strange that any of them had been rejected by their mates, but they were here, weren’t they? All except Wyatt, I assumed.
With an embarrassed smile, I leaned forward to address them. “Guys, that was wild, right? I’m so sorry, but in all the chaos, I didn’t really manage to memorize your names. It was too much to keep straight. Do you mind?”
“Oh, thank the gods,” one of them said with a heavy sigh. “I’m glad to hear that since I can’t remember your name, either.”
The two of us chuckled while the others shot him annoyed looks.
He slapped his chest. “J.D. Short for Jordan Darkham, but I go by the initials. Third Pack.”
The man had a big, easy smile and was clearly used to using it. Something about him reminded me of a golden retriever—lovably goofy and eager to please. I was worried for his safety already. This show did not reward people like him. You had to have a bit of a ruthless streak to survive, and from what I could see, this guy had none of that.
J.D. threw his arms around the two guys sitting on either side of him and grinned like an idiot. Both men flinched in surprise. The one on the left glanced at J.D. with surprise, color rising in his cheeks, while the other snarled and shrugged the arm off his shoulders.
The pissed-off guy glared at J.D. “My name is Omar, and if you touch me again, you stupid little pup, I’ll rip off your fucking arm.”
I wrinkled my nose in distaste. What a purebred dickhead. If my eyes and ears didn’t deceive me, there was a narcissist if I ever saw one. I filed that info away for later.
The other guy sat, J.D.’s arm still around his shoulders. Red-faced, he smiled at me politely. “I’m Leif.” He glanced at my outfit and smiled. “That dress really is amazing. I love it.”
“That settles it,” Zoe said. “He’s my favorite. He has good taste.”
The final contestant in the car was sitting in the corner away from most of us, quiet but with a faint smile on his lips as he gazed out the window at the scenery whizzing past.
“What about you, mister?” I asked, hoping my voice sounded sufficiently flirtatious.
Pulling his eyes away from the window, he smiled at me. “Sorry. I’m being rude. Abel from Fourth Pack. Can I ask, have any of you been to Bloodstone Island before?”
“Holy shit, what a stupid question, bro. Are you serious?” Omar glared at Abel. “No one sets foot on Bloodstone except feral shifters, vampires driven mad by eternity, and every other vile creature you can think of. Everyone knows that.” He rolled his eyes at Abel. “At least anyone with half a brain. It’s where people go to die. I hope you boys are ready for that, because I’m taking this sexy lady home with me. You all can have fun rotting on that island with whatever monsters the Tranquility Council left for you.”
Zoe’s eyebrows shot up to her hairline, and she curled her lip in disgust. She had the same opinion of Omar that I’d already developed. “Unpleasant” was an understatement. He also seemed to be completely oblivious to the fact that his demeanor was a major turnoff. I could see why his mate rejected him.
Staying in character, I ignored the little back-and-forth and smiled brightly. “Really good to meet you guys. Though, I agree with Omar that the island is not an ideal place to spend time.” I chuckled. “Hopefully, we all have our wills up to date and tombstones picked out.”
Leif shrugged. “Well, I prefer to be cremated. If there’s a volcano on Bloodstone, just toss my corpse in there.”
J.D. laughed like it was the funniest thing he’d ever heard. At least some of the guys weren’t as pessimistic as I was after the big send-off. That giant spectacle had had the air of some kind of goodbye. The odds weren’t in our favor. Some of these men wouldn’t make it off the island alive.
The thought had me peeking out the back window of the limo at the other car following us. An anxious buzzing danced across my skin. Wyatt was back there. Right behind me, like always. I was going to rip him a new one once I got a moment alone with him. When I was done with him, the monsters on Bloodstone Island would seem like puppies.
Unbidden, the memories of our night together flashed through my mind—his fingers inside me, his tongue on my skin, his lips at my ear. You damn well can have a good time with me. Those words and the way he’d shown me exactly how much of a good time I could have with him rattled around in my head.“Already got your eye on someone?” Leif asked with a grin.Blinking, I forced myself back to the present. “Huh? Sorry?”His grin broadened. “Those red cheeks…looks like you’re blushing. Maybe one of us has already caught your eye?”I laughed off his comment. “I’m only thinking about how exciting all this is. I don’t know any of you well enough to take a liking yet. We’ve literally just met.”Omar’s jaw clenched at that. He’d obviously assumed he was too good a catch for me not to have already realized he was the goddess’s gift to women. Abel deflated a bit as well, though not in a self-important way. If anything, he appeared to be insecure, especially for an alpha. What was his story?I wante
The floating cameras followed our little group as we traversed the path that led to the stairs up to the front door. A small group emerged from the mansion and met us halfway up the stairs—fae staff members and a burly vampire security guard. They had a quick, hushed conversation with Von before leading us the rest of the way up the steps.I clung to Zoe’s hand as fear seeped into my chest. No amount of positive self-talk would dispel it. Shit just got real. I wished I could keep her by my side the entire time, but that was not a realistic hope. She was here as my stylist, not my bodyguard or companion. At least not in the eyes of the show and its staff.“Everyone, smile,” Von said in a sing-song voice. The hovering cameras swept around to take a group photo of us as we neared the front doors. We all stopped and gave the cameras our best sexy, serious pose. I was sure we all looked glamorous, with our perfect outfits and hair, our sexy smiles and sultry looks against the backdrop of t
I clenched my fists and inhaled through my nose to keep from shifting and ripping the fucking vampire limb from limb. Each and every second, I was reminded why I hated this show. I couldn’t believe they were still doing the mating chamber. I hadn’t watched this thing in over a decade, and this was a fresh reminder of why. Death, blood, and fake romance weren’t enough, so real-life porn was added to the mix to make it really titillating. I’d hoped the mating chamber had been phased out. But why stop something that guarantees ratings, right? I did a poor job hiding my snarl of anger. All the shifters around me looked like they’d anticipated the mating chamber and were looking forward to it. Keeping my cool, I took a step over to look at Kira. If she was bothered about the mating chamber, it didn’t show. She was laughing along with Von.If it killed me, I’d make sure not a single person set foot or paw in that chamber with Kira except me. I didn’t care how smiley and nice some of these g
Most of the men here had probably never run afoul of some of these things and wouldn’t recognize the scents. I, however, had dealt closely with the things that walked the night. I scented a gorgon, a chimera, at least one feral shifter, and, if I wasn’t mistaken, a wyvern. The stories were true. Bloodstone Island really was as dangerous as they said. Even with my training and experience, the sheer number of creatures was enough to douse my guts with cold fear.“Onward, boys. Mustn’t keep the camera waiting,” Von said as he pushed to the front. “Don’t bother shifting if you’re scared. No need. The island is carefully controlled and monitored for the challenges and tasks. This is one such special occasion. I assure you, everyone is safe. Come, come. Don’t dally.” Von strode ahead of us, completely unconcerned.Hadn’t he just made a huge deal about how dangerous it was to be away from the mansion at night? He’d made it sound like the showrunners were controlling more than they let on. De
If I bit the big one on day one, the showrunners wouldn’t bat an eye. With death around every corner on The Reject Project, they always had a few women waiting in the wings. Sentimentality was not a word associated with this show. They’d toss my body in a bag and call up the next female in line. It happened a lot. In fact, when the prize mate died, the show’s ratings went through the roof. But I’d be damned if I let some other woman take the prize. I had too much at stake.Tired of waiting for me to react, the tiger shifter snarled and leaped at me. The orange-and-black fur streaked forward faster than any natural animal. With its claws extended, the shifter swiped at the air by my face. The only thing that saved me from having my throat opened was my reflexes. I bent backward, pulling my face out of range, then danced back to put space between the shifter and myself.I regained my balance just as the cat lunged again, swinging both paws forward to catch me in some kind of deadly hug.
Heaving in lungsful of breath, I disentangled from the creature. The arm I’d used to choke the beast was like rubber, the bicep ready to cramp from the exertion I’d placed on it. I glanced into the crowd and saw a mixture of reactions on the faces there. Most showed shock and awe that I’d beaten the beast without killing it. Others looked annoyed that I’d gone the bloodless route. Wyatt looked as white as a ghost but gave me a grudging nod of respect. I couldn’t help but smirk about that. Did he have that little faith in me? He should know better after all these years.A slow clap started from stage left, and I looked over to see Von walking out as he applauded me.“My goodness, ladies and gentlemen. Look at this beauty,” he said, sweeping a hand toward me. The floating cameras followed his gesture. “I hope the alphas were all watching that. Miss Durst is a very worthy mate indeed. She looks just as good taming the wild beast as she does taming our hearts.”Every word out of his mouth
Chapter 16WyattDespite myself, I was impressed with the mansion. The place must have cost millions to build. It looked like every castle, manor, estate, and villa I’d ever seen on TV rolled into one. The colors were deep, dark, and rich—lots of crimson, gold, and dark green. Had they tried to make it look like some kind of glamorous haunted house on purpose? Probably. All part of the show. A modern house with a bunch of glass, stainless steel, and sleek lines wouldn’t inspire the same kind of gravitas that this one did.We were in a large parlor that overlooked the ocean. I’d taken a seat in a plush armchair near the window so I could enjoy the amazing view. The bright moon reflected off the waves. Part of me hoped Kira would come down soon so she could see it. The island sucked, but this was beautiful. I wanted her to see it.The other men started murmuring behind me. Turning in my chair, I saw Von leading Kira down the stairs, her arm in his. I glanced at the bracelet on my arm an
I despised this freaking bracelet. It was a powerful magic item. Even though I knew the risks and what it would mean to interfere, I’d seen Kira in trouble and had immediately tried to shift to help her. But I couldn’t. This little piece of jewelry could be activated to keep me from being able to shift. The damned vampire hadn’t really touched on that. It made me trust that bloodsucker even less than I already did. What other information was he holding out on?As soon as the light on the bracelet turned green, a few of the guys I’d put in my “danger zone” turned on the charm. Smiles flashed, biceps bulged, and eyebrows cocked like the arrogant pricks they were. I did the bare minimum to let them think I was excited to be there but nothing more. I wasn’t happy to be here. I was here to protect Kira and keep her safe. Nothing else.Kira hurried back into the seating room, looking somewhat embarrassed. “I’m so sorry. You guys were waiting for me, and I’ve been doing interviews. I apologi
