I clenched my fists and inhaled through my nose to keep from shifting and ripping the fucking vampire limb from limb. Each and every second, I was reminded why I hated this show. I couldn’t believe they were still doing the mating chamber. I hadn’t watched this thing in over a decade, and this was a fresh reminder of why. Death, blood, and fake romance weren’t enough, so real-life p**n was added to the mix to make it really titillating. I’d hoped the mating chamber had been phased out. But why stop something that guarantees ratings, right? I did a poor job hiding my snarl of anger.
All the shifters around me looked like they’d anticipated the mating chamber and were looking forward to it. Keeping my cool, I took a step over to look at Kira. If she was bothered about the mating chamber, it didn’t show. She was laughing along with Von.
If it killed me, I’d make sure not a single person set foot or paw in that chamber with Kira except me. I didn’t care how smiley and nice some of these guys looked. I didn’t trust a single one of these fuckers near Kira. None of them could be trusted with her safety, not even Kira herself. She might be playing a game, but I wasn’t.
Von clapped his hands together, his smile getting even wider somehow. I wondered if his head would split apart if it went any further.
“Ladies, if you would be so kind?” he asked.
A small cluster of witches stepped forward, each holding a small wooden chest. I watched them move through the crowd, stopping at each contestant and staff member. When the young witch stepped up to me, she pulled a bracelet from the chest, took my hand, and wrapped it around my wrist. The item was surprisingly comfortable, and I could barely even feel it on my arm. She murmured a few words, then moved on. I tried to slide it off, but it wouldn’t budge an inch.
“My assistants are outfitting you with special armbands. Please don’t attempt to remove them, as they are attached to you via magic,” Von said. “They will not be released until the end of the show or the end of your life. Whichever comes first.
“These gorgeous little beauties act as trackers for our enchanted cameras. That way, they can find you anywhere when we are rolling live or recording extra footage for some of our special broadcasts and weekly updates. As of now, since we have cameras rolling, your band should be green.”
A small gem in the armband blinked green. Beneath it was a small screen and a few buttons.
“This is how you will know cameras are recording. If the light is white, we are not actively recording. These bands are also the only way the showrunners will send you messages. You’ll notice a small screen available for text messages.
“We at The Reject Project want you, as our contestants, to be part of the action. There is a small button to the right of the screen. If you aren’t recording, and some type of action is about to unfold, please don’t hesitate to hit that button. It will signal the enchanted cameras, and they will rush to your location. Just make sure you don’t accidentally hit it as you’re pulling down your pants in the bathroom. Can you say awkward?” Von laughed like he’d told the funniest joke in history.
“The device can also signal for emergencies and a few other items. I’m sure you’ll get accustomed to it in no time. I have no doubt this will be an exciting and adventurous experience. The cameras will eventually become commonplace, and you’ll forget they exist. I, and the entire world, can’t wait to see you all on season thirty-one of The Reject Project. Each of you is capable of winning, and I have no doubt you all have a shot as long as you try hard enough.
He paused. It felt like he was waiting for some type of applause, so the group clapped dutifully. I did my best not to roll my eyes.
“Are you men ready to have a real get-to-know-her talk with Kira?” Von asked.
Everyone chimed their agreement. I couldn’t even blame them. Unless they were all out of their minds, they had to be ready for this smarmy, creepy vampire to shut up and get a move on. I wanted to settle into the mansion and prepare for the next day. I was also desperate to pull Kira aside and give her the talking-to I’d been planning since I’d heard she’d done this stupid thing.
Von held up a finger. “Ah, that would be fun, but…you’ll all get to know each other better at the extra fun live-stream premiere tomorrow. For now, Kira still has to prove herself as a worthy mate to all you sexy alphas.”
Prove herself? I didn’t like the sound of that. A chill ran down my spine as a witch stepped forward with one of the vampire guards and took Kira’s hand, leading her toward the mansion.
Once Kira was out of sight, Von turned back to us. “Don’t worry, gents. You’ll see her again very soon. Please follow our island security team to the right.”
Von pointed toward the jungle to the side of the patio. Three security guys came forward. One looked like another vampire, while the other two had the scent of shifters but not wolves. Bears, I thought. I didn’t have the chance to delve into the complexities of smell as the three men and a small group of witches unceremoniously hustled us into the jungle along a small path that could only be walked single-file.
We were no more than fifteen feet into the forest when we all froze in our tracks, our noses in the air, growls rumbling from our throats. I could scent a myriad of things all around us, each one as dangerous as the next.
Most of the men here had probably never run afoul of some of these things and wouldn’t recognize the scents. I, however, had dealt closely with the things that walked the night. I scented a gorgon, a chimera, at least one feral shifter, and, if I wasn’t mistaken, a wyvern. The stories were true. Bloodstone Island really was as dangerous as they said. Even with my training and experience, the sheer number of creatures was enough to douse my guts with cold fear.“Onward, boys. Mustn’t keep the camera waiting,” Von said as he pushed to the front. “Don’t bother shifting if you’re scared. No need. The island is carefully controlled and monitored for the challenges and tasks. This is one such special occasion. I assure you, everyone is safe. Come, come. Don’t dally.” Von strode ahead of us, completely unconcerned.Hadn’t he just made a huge deal about how dangerous it was to be away from the mansion at night? He’d made it sound like the showrunners were controlling more than they let on. De
If I bit the big one on day one, the showrunners wouldn’t bat an eye. With death around every corner on The Reject Project, they always had a few women waiting in the wings. Sentimentality was not a word associated with this show. They’d toss my body in a bag and call up the next female in line. It happened a lot. In fact, when the prize mate died, the show’s ratings went through the roof. But I’d be damned if I let some other woman take the prize. I had too much at stake.Tired of waiting for me to react, the tiger shifter snarled and leaped at me. The orange-and-black fur streaked forward faster than any natural animal. With its claws extended, the shifter swiped at the air by my face. The only thing that saved me from having my throat opened was my reflexes. I bent backward, pulling my face out of range, then danced back to put space between the shifter and myself.I regained my balance just as the cat lunged again, swinging both paws forward to catch me in some kind of deadly hug.
Heaving in lungsful of breath, I disentangled from the creature. The arm I’d used to choke the beast was like rubber, the bicep ready to cramp from the exertion I’d placed on it. I glanced into the crowd and saw a mixture of reactions on the faces there. Most showed shock and awe that I’d beaten the beast without killing it. Others looked annoyed that I’d gone the bloodless route. Wyatt looked as white as a ghost but gave me a grudging nod of respect. I couldn’t help but smirk about that. Did he have that little faith in me? He should know better after all these years.A slow clap started from stage left, and I looked over to see Von walking out as he applauded me.“My goodness, ladies and gentlemen. Look at this beauty,” he said, sweeping a hand toward me. The floating cameras followed his gesture. “I hope the alphas were all watching that. Miss Durst is a very worthy mate indeed. She looks just as good taming the wild beast as she does taming our hearts.”Every word out of his mouth
Chapter 16WyattDespite myself, I was impressed with the mansion. The place must have cost millions to build. It looked like every castle, manor, estate, and villa I’d ever seen on TV rolled into one. The colors were deep, dark, and rich—lots of crimson, gold, and dark green. Had they tried to make it look like some kind of glamorous haunted house on purpose? Probably. All part of the show. A modern house with a bunch of glass, stainless steel, and sleek lines wouldn’t inspire the same kind of gravitas that this one did.We were in a large parlor that overlooked the ocean. I’d taken a seat in a plush armchair near the window so I could enjoy the amazing view. The bright moon reflected off the waves. Part of me hoped Kira would come down soon so she could see it. The island sucked, but this was beautiful. I wanted her to see it.The other men started murmuring behind me. Turning in my chair, I saw Von leading Kira down the stairs, her arm in his. I glanced at the bracelet on my arm an
I despised this freaking bracelet. It was a powerful magic item. Even though I knew the risks and what it would mean to interfere, I’d seen Kira in trouble and had immediately tried to shift to help her. But I couldn’t. This little piece of jewelry could be activated to keep me from being able to shift. The damned vampire hadn’t really touched on that. It made me trust that bloodsucker even less than I already did. What other information was he holding out on?As soon as the light on the bracelet turned green, a few of the guys I’d put in my “danger zone” turned on the charm. Smiles flashed, biceps bulged, and eyebrows cocked like the arrogant pricks they were. I did the bare minimum to let them think I was excited to be there but nothing more. I wasn’t happy to be here. I was here to protect Kira and keep her safe. Nothing else.Kira hurried back into the seating room, looking somewhat embarrassed. “I’m so sorry. You guys were waiting for me, and I’ve been doing interviews. I apologi
“Don’t get cheeky. It’s a little early.” She swatted my arm playfully but hard enough to sting.Nathaniel glared at me, but I gave him an easy smile.Leif spoke up. “How old are you, Kira?”“Twenty-three,” she said. That started a cascade of personal questions from around the room. What did she do for fun? Where did she go to school? Did she play sports? What was the Eleventh Pack like? It went on and on. I got a bit bored since I already knew everything about her. Kira answered everything politely and asked questions in return.“Any siblings?” I asked, wanting to get back into the conversation.Kira turned toward me and gave me a half smile. “Yes, actually. I have an older brother. His name’s Kolton.”I grinned at her, sweeping my hand dramatically toward one of the floating cameras. “Well, say hi. I’m sure he’s watching.”Several other alphas laughed, and Kira went a bit pink in the face again. She turned to the nearest camera and gave it a sad little wave.“Hey, big brother.”As mu
“And before you ask, this isn’t sexism. In the seasons when it’s a single male reject and a bunch of female wolves trying to win him over, it’s the same thing. The main contestant always sleeps alone.”Zoe crossed her arms and cocked her head. “Always?”The witch rolled her eyes. “You know what I mean. Some trysts may happen during filming, that’s to be expected—but no crew members or support staff are to stay with the lead contestant.” She turned back to me. “And even though she’s your friend, she’s still designated as your stylist. Therefore, she’s considered support staff.”“No,” I said firmly. “Absolutely not. I want her with me. We only got here a few hours ago, and I’d like to have someone who knows me to help me get settled.”I wasn’t asking, I was demanding. The witch could hear it in my voice. I did everything but growl at her. I would not be dissuaded. I’d fight the bitch right there in the hallway if I needed to.The woman looked ready to argue further, but something in my
Zoe was asleep on the massive velvet couch beside my bed when I crawled into bed. I stayed awake with the events of the day replaying in my mind. Interviews, flashing cameras, screaming fans, helicopters, tigers, food, flirting, stress…it was all too much. The sheets were hot, I was uncomfortable, and I couldn’t get my mind to slow down.Completely frustrated, I swung my legs out of bed and grabbed a thick robe from the closet. I wrapped it around myself, covering the silk pajamas they’d supplied me, and tiptoed out of the room, careful not to wake Zoe as I went. With no clue about where I was going, only the deep desire to wander, I padded down the hallway. Thankfully, it seemed all the crew had turned in for the night as well. The house was enormous. Many of the doors were closed, and I didn’t try opening them, afraid of barging in on someone’s quarters. The last thing I wanted was to stumble into a room and see Von Thornton balls-deep in one of the young female production assistant
