“I’ll do any challenge you want, Omar. I’d be more than happy to complete any task involving shifting, and I’ll complete it any way I see fit. I may not be able to shift, but at least I’m not a narrow-minded dick who got sent here for breaking his fated mate’s heart by going balls-deep in some vampire chick.”
“Oh, snap!” J.D. said and put a fist to his mouth to cover his grin.
Leif looked mortified and pointed at Omar. “You got rejected for being a cheater? You actually cheated on your fated mate?”
That was a big no-no in our culture. The fated-mate pairing was a sacred thing that was not to be defiled. It was part of why Gavin’s brother had rejected Kira. He’d refused to believe the drug had made her sexually attack me. Cheating on a fated mate was tantamount to spitting in the eye of the Moon Goddess herself. The others knew the same thing, and the whole room was looking at Omar with differing levels of disgust and disappointment.
Unrepentant, Omar gave a low growl and swept his eyes across the room, daring one of them to say something. Von clapped his hands to get our attention.
“Now this is exciting,” Von said. “I think I have an idea that everyone, especially our viewers, will love.”
I groaned. From the little time I’d spent on the island, I had figured out a few basic things. One of them being that if Von said that something would be entertaining to the viewers, it meant it would be dangerous as hell.
“Our votes have already come in for the Arena Match,” Von went on. “Wyatt and Leif were the two winners, but this exciting turn of events has me thinking a brand-new challenge may be in order. What if we do something that will really push you all to your limits? Put you under duress and truly reveal all this delicious drama within the group.”
Von ran his tongue along his long canines. “I need to discuss this with the rest of our team. I think you all need to get ready. What I’m planning will take place at night. You’ve got a few hours.” He turned to leave, and I heard him whisper to himself, “This is going to be amazing.” He was in a much better mood than when he’d arrived.
Omar was still glaring at Kira, and I stepped in front of her, blocking his view. His eyes met mine, and I narrowed my gaze, hoping he could read the threat in my eyes. All I wanted was one chance. If he did or said anything I didn’t like, it was on.
The other alphas had started filing out of the room. Tate passed me, giving me an incredulous frown. “You know, for someone who’s so sure Kira can handle herself, you’re awfully protective. Seems dumb to me, but whatever.”
“You know he’s right,” Kira said when he was gone.
I turned to see her looking at me in that way she did when she wanted to get her point across. “What?”
“I can take care of myself. I don’t need you playing the hero. Jumping in like this only makes me look weak.”
“Hang on,” Mika said, holding up a hand. “Kira, no one here thinks you’re weak.” He glanced at Omar and winced. “At least nobody with a brain. I don’t think that’s what Wyatt was implying when he came to your defense.”
I was a little surprised to hear Mika speak up for me. He’d been more or less a brooding and silent shadow the whole time. I appreciated him trying to explain to Kira what I thought was obvious.
Omar scoffed and walked out, bumping his shoulder into mine and growling as he left the room. He didn’t even bother glancing at Kira. He was going to be trouble. He’d blatantly said he wanted Kira dead so the show would bring in another female. One way or another, Omar would have to be dealt with.
Leif walked over and wrapped Kira in a hug, squeezing her tightly. I was already pissed off, and seeing one of the other guys touching her nearly sent me over the edge.
“Don’t let what he said get to you,” Leif said. He pulled away and gave Kira a reassuring grin. “His opinions don’t matter, and there’s nothing in the world that would make me think less of you.”
I pressed my lips together in a thin line. Was Leif using this whole thing as a way to move on Kira? It sounded like he was practically confessing his love for her.
When Kira smiled back at him, my annoyance only increased. It wasn’t her fake smile; it was genuine. She swung her arms around Leif and hugged him back. All I could do was stand there with my fists clenched, wondering if I did have anything to worry about from Leif. If I voiced any concerns, I’d look as petty and stupid as Omar. When Leif finally left, I released the breath I’d been holding.
Now, we got to go and try to get ready for whatever horror Omar had brought down on our heads. It would have been bad enough simply doing the Arena Match, but to be honest, I had no fears about my chances fighting Leif, especially not after the way he’d been flirting with Kira. A one-on-one fight was easy to understand and plan for. Now? That damn vampire had gotten something in his head that was probably a hundred times worse and way more dangerous.
Before I could say anything to Kira, she stormed off. So far, this day had been about as shitty as it possibly could have been. I couldn’t think of a way it could have gone worse.
Gavin had left only a few seconds before Kira did. If I hurried, I could catch him before he got to the alpha den. If nothing else, I was going to try to get some answers. Why was he here, what were his plans, and last of all, was he going to put Kira in danger?
He was walking down the corridor toward the den when I caught him.
“Hey, Gavin?”
He turned slowly and looked at me like I was something to be scraped off the bottom of his shoe. “Wyatt.”
“What are you doing here?” I asked.
Ignoring my question, he said, “You know, all these years, I always thought you were hunting Kira. I never thought you’d go this far to win her over, though.”I growled. “We aren’t talking about me. I asked you a question. What are you doing here?”“None of your business. Besides, I should be asking you the same thing. You’re a lone wolf. No official pack. I thought every alpha had to be aligned with a pack to be cast.”“It’s not an official rule, more a guideline they can overlook when they want to,” I said with a shrug, hoping he didn’t press for more details.Gavin sneered. “Well, isn’t that lucky.”Stepping even closer to him, I looked him in the eye. “You know, I’ve never liked your family. The Fells have always acted like they were better than they are. You guys pretend you’re as important as the First or Second packs, but you’re out there in the Eastern Wilds, just like Kira’s pack. Your family ruined Kira’s life out in the real world, and I’ll be damned if I let you ruin her c
“Let me get you ready. That way, you can get your mind off it. Did they say what you should wear?”I shook my head. “All Von said was ‘get ready.’” I shrugged.“All right, we’ll go with the same survival gear you used in the swamp. Can’t go wrong with that. It’ll give you a little protection, anyway.”Zoe got my gear ready, then helped me get dressed. She must have used magic to clean them while I was at lunch. The garments were no longer caked in mud, dirt, and blood. Before she could work on my hair, there was a knock at the door.“Who is that?” Zoe asked.“No clue. I’ll check.”By the time I made it to the door, I was even more irritated. As I unlocked the door, I swore that if it was Von, I’d chase his ass down the hall with a sharpened stake. It wasn’t him, though. It was one of the witches. She smiled at me as the door swung open. “Oh, good. You’ve already gotten prepared,” she said when she saw my attire.“Yes, for tonight. Can I help you with something? I was hoping to rest a
I flinched in pain as the wolfsbane stung and burned my fingers, hands, and forearms. Once the rope was saturated enough, I pulled them back out, breathing a sigh of relief as the pain abated to that of a minor sunburn. My sacrifice was worth it, though. The ropes, laden with water, were looser and easier to stretch. It took nearly five minutes, but I managed to free my wrists. Rubbing them, I basked in my ingenuity for a few seconds before doing the same thing to my ankles. The sensation was equally agonizing, but knowing that it would work eased the sting a bit. In minutes, I was totally free and standing on the rock, letting my body heal. Now, I needed to find a way off this stupid rock. The moon had already risen, and I could see it reflected in the water as I racked my brain for ideas. It was in the water that I saw the reflection of massive wings gliding silently down from the sky toward me. I frowned, then I registered the shape and knew exactly what was coming. My reflexes kic
Wyatt fought well until one wolf attacked from his blind side. I sucked in a breath as his flesh tore away, leaving a bloody gash. Wyatt yowled, and the second feral took the opening. It grabbed Wyatt by his throat and slung him into the pond.Instantly thrashing to the surface back in his human form, Wyatt let out a bloodcurdling scream as the wolfsbane soaked into his skin. The wolves on the edge of the pond looked on in silence as Wyatt gagged and spat the poisoned water from his mouth. My nails dug into my palms as I watched him struggle. I was begging him, in hushed whispers, to swim to the edge.“Swim, Wyatt. You have to swim. Hurry.”If he heard me, he made no attempt to do what I wanted. His arms slowed, and I saw the pain in his face turn to agony, then he began to slip under. His body succumbed to the poison. I was about to watch Wyatt drown right in front of me.The thought sent a jolt of terror and heartache through me. I shuddered and hit my knees, watching him give a few
Safe for the moment, I collapsed onto the mud beside Wyatt. My body trembled as it tried to heal from the wolfsbane poisoning. Wyatt looked terrible. Along with the poison and the awful injury from the feral, it looked like he’d sustained a lot of other wounds in his fight to find me.I jerked my snout toward the jungle as more battle sounds reached my ears—human shouts, the howls of wolves, the hissing of vampires. A deep, thunderous scream of a ghost was muted by the ear-splitting screech of a banshee across the pond. I needed to get Wyatt out of there. The wolfsbane had soaked into his wounds and was preventing him from healing. I needed to get him to the mansion and the healers.I tried to shift back so I could carry him to safety, but my wolf flat-out refused. She’d been locked away long enough that she wasn’t giving me control. I tried to focus, demanding that she let me shift back, but it was like talking to a brick wall. Instead, now that my legs had regained some function, I
“Listen, jackass,” I hissed. “Since you’re so interested in my alpha wolf, maybe you should know something. She’s really fucking hungry, and I think she may be in the mood for some vampire flesh. I may have to let her take a few nibbles if you don’t cut the shit and let this healer help Wyatt to make sure he makes a full recovery. Got it?”The other alphas said nothing, only staring at me as a very disheveled and annoyed Von led me and the healer out of the room. I’d assumed Von would try and put up another fight, but I was pleasantly surprised when Wyatt was wheeled into the luxurious mating chamber. The healer and her assistants laid him on the massive bed and started working on him.The last thing I saw before I fell asleep at his side was the awful wounds he’d suffered. All of them inflicted on him as he’d tried to save me.Chapter 30WyattPaws hissed over the grass as I ran. At first, I was confused, unsure where I was or why I was running. Then the scents of the forest told me
Her fingers traced some of the wolfsbane burns and cuts on my side. A groan escaped my lips as she touched the nearly healed tear in my side, then traced her finger across my abs to touch a cut there. Then, instead of a finger, her entire palm slid across my skin, up to my chest and then down the other side. The look in Kira’s eyes showed me she wasn’t worried about my injuries anymore. She looked hungry and lustful as she took in the angles of my body. The tension and chemistry between us always grew into a roaring fire every time we were alone, and it was becoming impossible to ignore. Kira raised her eyes to mine, biting her lower lip as her fingers slipped further down to graze my crotch. My cock twitched. All my fear of the challenge and for her was gone now. She was safe. We were alone. I could show her exactly what I wanted.Looping my arm around her, I pulled her close and crushed my lips into hers. Without hesitation, Kira ran her hands up my back and opened her mouth to allo
Chapter 1KiraRivulets of condensation trickled down the side of my glass as I glanced around. The restaurant wasn’t empty, but it wasn’t busy, either, which was perfect. I wasn’t surprised my target had chosen this location. It was upscale but not too expensive—the exact type of place I assumed he always took his victims. He was late, though, which didn’t fit his style.“Kira?” the voice in my earpiece said. “Any sign?”It was Douglas, one of the other Tranquility operatives assigned to this sting. We had a two-man team plus the bait. I was, of course, the bait. Douglas sat in an unmarked van three blocks away. The second member of the team, Carter, was hidden in the line of sight of the restaurant with a camera. I’d chosen a seat by the big bay window so the team would have a good vantage point. The earpiece was small, virtually invisible unless you were incredibly observant, and more silent than regular tech allowed. The fae had created the magical device for the council. The spel
