Unbidden, the memories of our night together flashed through my mind—his fingers inside me, his tongue on my skin, his lips at my ear. You damn well can have a good time with me. Those words and the way he’d shown me exactly how much of a good time I could have with him rattled around in my head.
“Already got your eye on someone?” Leif asked with a grin.
Blinking, I forced myself back to the present. “Huh? Sorry?”
His grin broadened. “Those red cheeks…looks like you’re blushing. Maybe one of us has already caught your eye?”
I laughed off his comment. “I’m only thinking about how exciting all this is. I don’t know any of you well enough to take a liking yet. We’ve literally just met.”
Omar’s jaw clenched at that. He’d obviously assumed he was too good a catch for me not to have already realized he was the goddess’s gift to women. Abel deflated a bit as well, though not in a self-important way. If anything, he appeared to be insecure, especially for an alpha. What was his story?
I wanted to feel bad for him because he looked sort of dejected, but I cautioned myself. These guys knew the risks when they signed up, just like I had. They were all hoping for a fated mate. It wasn’t my fault that they’d turned to this show out of desperation. I had too much to worry about on my own end. None of this was about love or lust for me. My one goal was to protect my family and prevent a war. That was all I had my eyes on.
Ten minutes later, the limos pulled up to a helipad near the coast. Three helicopters sat on the tarmac, surrounded by pilots and more bodyguards. One was a huge demon with two-foot-long horns curving out from his forehead, his thick muscles barely contained by his suit.
Zoe pointed out the window. “We’re gonna be on TV again.”
Glancing out, I saw luminescent orbs floating near each aircraft—magic drone cameras taking in every scene as we made our way to Bloodstone Island. I wondered if those things had followed us the entire drive.
We parked beside the helicopters, and Von Thornton leaped out of the limo Wyatt was in.
He raised his arms, gesturing to the helicopters. “I hope no one is afraid of heights.”
A small chuckle ran through the contestants. I felt Wyatt’s eyes on me, hot and insistent. Like he was begging me to look at him. I bit the inside of my cheek and forced myself not to look at him. I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction.
“Ladies, you’ll be in this chopper with me, J.D., Leif, and Mika,” Von said, stepping toward the craft in the front.
I breathed a sigh of relief that I wouldn’t have to share a flight with Wyatt. I was still trying to process everything. The longer I had to prepare myself without him in the vicinity, the better. Despite my best efforts, as I buckled myself into my seat, I looked out the door and watched as Wyatt got into the farthest chopper.
“How long is this flight?” I asked Von.
“Not long, my dear. Not long at all,” he replied with a grin.
I frowned. Bloodstone Island was one of the most remote places on the planet. If I remembered correctly, it was hundreds of miles offshore. It should have taken at least an hour to get there.
The helicopters were enchanted so that the spinning blades above us made almost no noise. The air swept around us with a faint whoosh as we took off. The helicopters cruised above the trees, and a moment later, we were over the open ocean headed toward the horizon, the night sky inky-black above us. The stars twinkled, and the massive white face of the moon shone down on us.
The air rippled, the stars shuddered, and even the lunar surface became distorted. My ears popped, and suddenly an island was visible in the distance. I gaped at it, looking over at Zoe in question.
Her face was ablaze with admiration. “Damn. That’s some good magic. Temporal displacement of this many people and these giant helicopters is not easy.”
Von heard our conversation and patted me on the knee. “The Reject Project only employs the best fae spellcasters. We spared no expense.”
Behind us, the floating cameras sped along, keeping pace with the aircraft as we descended to the island. It was huge. Much bigger than it appeared on TV. I glanced down at the choppy waves of the ocean. This far from the mainland, we were in the realm of the merpeople. Huge clans of the mysterious ocean dwellers were said to reside this far out. I wondered if I’d catch a glimpse of one at some point.
As we drew nearer, more of the island took shape. Dense, shadowy jungles became visible, along with a small chain of volcano-shaped mountains. Maybe Leif would get his wish. It was beautiful in a savage sort of way. But along with the beauty was something sinister. The island was cloaked in danger. The land basically screamed that it was dark, mysterious, and terrifying.
Shaking my head, I tried to get a grip on myself. Everyone knew the place was dangerous. The challenges would be difficult and life-threatening. I’d have to use all my training and every ounce of my instinct and ability if I ever wanted to step foot on the mainland again. I was here to win. Nothing would stop me.
The choppers landed gracefully on a massive helipad, and that was when I caught sight of it. Reject Mansion—an enormous, sprawling estate built into the side of the coast. I’d seen it a million times while binge-watching the show with Zoe, but TV didn’t do it justice. It was one of the grandest houses I’d ever seen.
We all offloaded from the helicopters, and Zoe squeezed me tight and squealed in delight. Her fears and worries vanished for a few minutes as she fan-girled at the sight of the mansion. She bounced on her toes as we made our way toward the building.
The floating cameras followed our little group as we traversed the path that led to the stairs up to the front door. A small group emerged from the mansion and met us halfway up the stairs—fae staff members and a burly vampire security guard. They had a quick, hushed conversation with Von before leading us the rest of the way up the steps.I clung to Zoe’s hand as fear seeped into my chest. No amount of positive self-talk would dispel it. Shit just got real. I wished I could keep her by my side the entire time, but that was not a realistic hope. She was here as my stylist, not my bodyguard or companion. At least not in the eyes of the show and its staff.“Everyone, smile,” Von said in a sing-song voice. The hovering cameras swept around to take a group photo of us as we neared the front doors. We all stopped and gave the cameras our best sexy, serious pose. I was sure we all looked glamorous, with our perfect outfits and hair, our sexy smiles and sultry looks against the backdrop of t
I clenched my fists and inhaled through my nose to keep from shifting and ripping the fucking vampire limb from limb. Each and every second, I was reminded why I hated this show. I couldn’t believe they were still doing the mating chamber. I hadn’t watched this thing in over a decade, and this was a fresh reminder of why. Death, blood, and fake romance weren’t enough, so real-life porn was added to the mix to make it really titillating. I’d hoped the mating chamber had been phased out. But why stop something that guarantees ratings, right? I did a poor job hiding my snarl of anger. All the shifters around me looked like they’d anticipated the mating chamber and were looking forward to it. Keeping my cool, I took a step over to look at Kira. If she was bothered about the mating chamber, it didn’t show. She was laughing along with Von.If it killed me, I’d make sure not a single person set foot or paw in that chamber with Kira except me. I didn’t care how smiley and nice some of these g
Most of the men here had probably never run afoul of some of these things and wouldn’t recognize the scents. I, however, had dealt closely with the things that walked the night. I scented a gorgon, a chimera, at least one feral shifter, and, if I wasn’t mistaken, a wyvern. The stories were true. Bloodstone Island really was as dangerous as they said. Even with my training and experience, the sheer number of creatures was enough to douse my guts with cold fear.“Onward, boys. Mustn’t keep the camera waiting,” Von said as he pushed to the front. “Don’t bother shifting if you’re scared. No need. The island is carefully controlled and monitored for the challenges and tasks. This is one such special occasion. I assure you, everyone is safe. Come, come. Don’t dally.” Von strode ahead of us, completely unconcerned.Hadn’t he just made a huge deal about how dangerous it was to be away from the mansion at night? He’d made it sound like the showrunners were controlling more than they let on. De
If I bit the big one on day one, the showrunners wouldn’t bat an eye. With death around every corner on The Reject Project, they always had a few women waiting in the wings. Sentimentality was not a word associated with this show. They’d toss my body in a bag and call up the next female in line. It happened a lot. In fact, when the prize mate died, the show’s ratings went through the roof. But I’d be damned if I let some other woman take the prize. I had too much at stake.Tired of waiting for me to react, the tiger shifter snarled and leaped at me. The orange-and-black fur streaked forward faster than any natural animal. With its claws extended, the shifter swiped at the air by my face. The only thing that saved me from having my throat opened was my reflexes. I bent backward, pulling my face out of range, then danced back to put space between the shifter and myself.I regained my balance just as the cat lunged again, swinging both paws forward to catch me in some kind of deadly hug.
Heaving in lungsful of breath, I disentangled from the creature. The arm I’d used to choke the beast was like rubber, the bicep ready to cramp from the exertion I’d placed on it. I glanced into the crowd and saw a mixture of reactions on the faces there. Most showed shock and awe that I’d beaten the beast without killing it. Others looked annoyed that I’d gone the bloodless route. Wyatt looked as white as a ghost but gave me a grudging nod of respect. I couldn’t help but smirk about that. Did he have that little faith in me? He should know better after all these years.A slow clap started from stage left, and I looked over to see Von walking out as he applauded me.“My goodness, ladies and gentlemen. Look at this beauty,” he said, sweeping a hand toward me. The floating cameras followed his gesture. “I hope the alphas were all watching that. Miss Durst is a very worthy mate indeed. She looks just as good taming the wild beast as she does taming our hearts.”Every word out of his mouth
Chapter 16WyattDespite myself, I was impressed with the mansion. The place must have cost millions to build. It looked like every castle, manor, estate, and villa I’d ever seen on TV rolled into one. The colors were deep, dark, and rich—lots of crimson, gold, and dark green. Had they tried to make it look like some kind of glamorous haunted house on purpose? Probably. All part of the show. A modern house with a bunch of glass, stainless steel, and sleek lines wouldn’t inspire the same kind of gravitas that this one did.We were in a large parlor that overlooked the ocean. I’d taken a seat in a plush armchair near the window so I could enjoy the amazing view. The bright moon reflected off the waves. Part of me hoped Kira would come down soon so she could see it. The island sucked, but this was beautiful. I wanted her to see it.The other men started murmuring behind me. Turning in my chair, I saw Von leading Kira down the stairs, her arm in his. I glanced at the bracelet on my arm an
I despised this freaking bracelet. It was a powerful magic item. Even though I knew the risks and what it would mean to interfere, I’d seen Kira in trouble and had immediately tried to shift to help her. But I couldn’t. This little piece of jewelry could be activated to keep me from being able to shift. The damned vampire hadn’t really touched on that. It made me trust that bloodsucker even less than I already did. What other information was he holding out on?As soon as the light on the bracelet turned green, a few of the guys I’d put in my “danger zone” turned on the charm. Smiles flashed, biceps bulged, and eyebrows cocked like the arrogant pricks they were. I did the bare minimum to let them think I was excited to be there but nothing more. I wasn’t happy to be here. I was here to protect Kira and keep her safe. Nothing else.Kira hurried back into the seating room, looking somewhat embarrassed. “I’m so sorry. You guys were waiting for me, and I’ve been doing interviews. I apologi
“Don’t get cheeky. It’s a little early.” She swatted my arm playfully but hard enough to sting.Nathaniel glared at me, but I gave him an easy smile.Leif spoke up. “How old are you, Kira?”“Twenty-three,” she said. That started a cascade of personal questions from around the room. What did she do for fun? Where did she go to school? Did she play sports? What was the Eleventh Pack like? It went on and on. I got a bit bored since I already knew everything about her. Kira answered everything politely and asked questions in return.“Any siblings?” I asked, wanting to get back into the conversation.Kira turned toward me and gave me a half smile. “Yes, actually. I have an older brother. His name’s Kolton.”I grinned at her, sweeping my hand dramatically toward one of the floating cameras. “Well, say hi. I’m sure he’s watching.”Several other alphas laughed, and Kira went a bit pink in the face again. She turned to the nearest camera and gave it a sad little wave.“Hey, big brother.”As mu
