One by one, men got out of the car, each as gorgeous as the last. Every one of them could have been a movie star or model. The crowd, especially the ladies, screeched as the men—all attired in tailored tuxedoes—waved.
I did my best to hear all the names as they were called out and file them away in my memory, but the screams, flashing lights, and my nerves made that impossible. I’d have to wait until later to try and get them all straight.
The men looked up at the stage and tried to catch my eye as I smiled and nodded at whatever the hell Von was saying. I didn’t really care for the intent and greedy way they looked at me. Like I was nothing more than a prize to be won.
After the eighth man stepped out, Von raised his hands and addressed the crowd. “We have a bit of a last-minute change regarding our tenth and eleventh contestants. The eleventh contestant was delayed and will join us on Bloodstone Island. And due to unforeseen circumstances, our tenth competitor had to drop out.” Murmurs of confusion rippled through the crowd. “Yes, yes. Very unfortunate. But we have filled that slot with a very eligible alpha from the Second Pack.”
A leg, clothed in black, extended out of the car, followed by a hand and arm. Von was beside me, calling out the name of the final contestant, but I didn’t need to hear it. The man looked up to the stage and locked eyes with me, giving me a cocky grin.
Wyatt Rivers’ intense green eyes gazed up at me.
Chapter 12
I would have given my left arm to have a camera when Kira saw me stepping out of that limo. Her face was priceless. There were about a million cameras catching her face, though, so I was sure I’d be able to find a good picture. Maybe I’d hang it up in my room for posterity’s sake. The combination of shock, horror, confusion, anger, and disbelief was something I’d want to look back on forever.
Taking my place beside the other guys, I straightened and smoothed out my tuxedo. Unlike most of the others, I ignored the flashing lights, screaming fans, and general chaos of the premiere. I was focused on Kira and what was about to happen to her.
On that gigantic gaudy stage, Kira was still looking at me with wide-eyed bafflement. I could practically hear her brain short-circuiting. No matter what kind of shitshow this ended up being, I at least had this one moment where I’d one-upped her in a way she’d never expected.
I cocked an eyebrow and gave her the cockiest grin I could manage. Her face clouded. But she was a good actress, I’d give her that. That beaming, perfect smile of hers reappeared a moment later as Von Thornton put his arm in hers. I hoped she knew I was doing this for her. After everything that had happened, Kira had to realize I wouldn’t allow her to throw herself to the wolves—literally and figuratively—without me being there to pull her from the fire.
It had surprised me that my uncle had gone along with my request. He was fairly high up in the network’s chain of command and one of the main executives at The Reject Project. He had the power to pull any strings he wanted. I’d assumed I’d have to give a kidney before my family would even consider talking to me after we’d been estranged for so long. The warmth with which my uncle and my aunt had welcomed me was strange, but I wasn’t one to look a gift horse in the mouth.
Uncle Rob had been hesitant to put me on the show and confused about why I was all gung-ho about it after all the years I’d spent decrying the show at every turn. I’d given him a line about wanting to bring some respectability to my name…and mentioned that I might know the new female lead.
“Well, that makes things spicy, doesn’t it, Wyatt?” he’d said.
“Can you do this for me, Uncle Rob?”
“All right. If there’s anyone on Earth I can be sure about getting out of this thing alive, it’s you, Wyatt. But if anyone asks, I had no idea you were going on the show, got it? I’m not gonna be answering uncomfortable questions at Thanksgiving.”
“Got it. Thank you.”
That had been that. A few days later, I was whisked off to Fangmore City to be prepped for this moment: the reveal of the eligible alpha bachelors. Now, I watched Von Thornton lead Kira back to their seats in the center of the stage.
She looked stunning. It reminded me of how she’d looked that night. Beautiful and amazing, asking me to do things I’d only thought about doing to her in the deepest recesses of my mind. As the other male contestants walked up the red-carpeted steps to join her and Von on stage, I wondered if she was remembering the same things I was. My blood ran hot at seeing her, but I had to keep my cool. Gods, I hoped she wouldn’t tell Von she knew me.
Plenty of people watching the show would know we were colleagues and had a history. Uncle Rob had made sure the network would sweep most of that under the rug, but if worse came to worst, it would add another element of drama. That was fine, but if that revelation happened, I wanted it to be once the show had truly gotten underway. There was still a chance, however small, that other executives might step in and remove me, but their hands would be tied once the actual filming started.
The flashing cameras temporarily blinded me as I tried to get a look at Kira’s expression. Unable to focus on her, I glanced at the crowd and quickly found Kolton. He was right where he’d said he would be. He nodded gravely. He’d been the only person I’d told about this. As a close relative of the female lead, he’d been put up in a nice hotel, though not as nice as Kira’s. He’d literally been throwing up from worrying about his sister. When I broke the news that I was going on the show to help protect her, he’d wept with relief. He’d spent the last few days thanking me profusely, but I could see his worry had returned. Why shouldn’t it? Now, not only his sister but his best friend were going to compete in one of the most dangerous shows in the world.Kolton raised a hand, waving but not at me. He was trying to get Kira’s attention. My heart thundered. What was he doing? Kira spotted him, and I watched as the two siblings made eye contact. Kolton glanced at me, then back at Kira, shaki
Centuries of experience had made him the greatest showman on earth. But I was a Tranquility operative. I could see through people. When I looked into his eyes, I saw the truth. No matter how well he played it off or how wide his smile, he had a secret. He was bored out of his mind with his life, and this show was the only way he could find any excitement or drama. It explained why he’d stuck with it for so long. The microphone was under my chin. Kira, Von, and the thousands in attendance stared at me, waiting for me to speak.Clearing my throat, I leaned forward. “Wyatt Rivers, Second Pack.”Von threw an arm over my shoulders. “Greetings, Mister Rivers. Now, Wyatt, what should Miss Durst know about you?”The other men had either flirted with Kira or aggressively told them how much they wanted her. I decided to keep things similar—and mess with her a little.“Well, Von, she needs to know that I protect what’s mine, and she’ll be mine soon. I’m possessive, in a good way, and she needs t
Chapter 13KiraThank the gods Zoe was smart enough to keep her mouth shut about Wyatt. When she climbed into the car with me, her saucer-like eyes said everything that needed to be said. A grim nod from me was all the answer she received. She understood.Zoe’s frenetic energy was even more elevated than usual. Probably exacerbated by the revelation that Wyatt was on the show with me and the general anxiety she and I shared. Whatever it was, she was a bouncing ball of chaotic spirit. She was talking a mile a minute, introducing herself and asking everyone questions. The other men were nervous, and so was I. All we wanted to do was sit and contemplate what was ahead, but Zoe’s voice was like a dull hum over everything that made introspection nearly impossible. It took all I had to keep my pleasant smile and bright-eyed happiness in place. Gods, Wyatt. For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out how he’d done it. The male contestants had been picked more than a month ago, well before I ma
Unbidden, the memories of our night together flashed through my mind—his fingers inside me, his tongue on my skin, his lips at my ear. You damn well can have a good time with me. Those words and the way he’d shown me exactly how much of a good time I could have with him rattled around in my head.“Already got your eye on someone?” Leif asked with a grin.Blinking, I forced myself back to the present. “Huh? Sorry?”His grin broadened. “Those red cheeks…looks like you’re blushing. Maybe one of us has already caught your eye?”I laughed off his comment. “I’m only thinking about how exciting all this is. I don’t know any of you well enough to take a liking yet. We’ve literally just met.”Omar’s jaw clenched at that. He’d obviously assumed he was too good a catch for me not to have already realized he was the goddess’s gift to women. Abel deflated a bit as well, though not in a self-important way. If anything, he appeared to be insecure, especially for an alpha. What was his story?I wante
The floating cameras followed our little group as we traversed the path that led to the stairs up to the front door. A small group emerged from the mansion and met us halfway up the stairs—fae staff members and a burly vampire security guard. They had a quick, hushed conversation with Von before leading us the rest of the way up the steps.I clung to Zoe’s hand as fear seeped into my chest. No amount of positive self-talk would dispel it. Shit just got real. I wished I could keep her by my side the entire time, but that was not a realistic hope. She was here as my stylist, not my bodyguard or companion. At least not in the eyes of the show and its staff.“Everyone, smile,” Von said in a sing-song voice. The hovering cameras swept around to take a group photo of us as we neared the front doors. We all stopped and gave the cameras our best sexy, serious pose. I was sure we all looked glamorous, with our perfect outfits and hair, our sexy smiles and sultry looks against the backdrop of t
I clenched my fists and inhaled through my nose to keep from shifting and ripping the fucking vampire limb from limb. Each and every second, I was reminded why I hated this show. I couldn’t believe they were still doing the mating chamber. I hadn’t watched this thing in over a decade, and this was a fresh reminder of why. Death, blood, and fake romance weren’t enough, so real-life porn was added to the mix to make it really titillating. I’d hoped the mating chamber had been phased out. But why stop something that guarantees ratings, right? I did a poor job hiding my snarl of anger. All the shifters around me looked like they’d anticipated the mating chamber and were looking forward to it. Keeping my cool, I took a step over to look at Kira. If she was bothered about the mating chamber, it didn’t show. She was laughing along with Von.If it killed me, I’d make sure not a single person set foot or paw in that chamber with Kira except me. I didn’t care how smiley and nice some of these g
Most of the men here had probably never run afoul of some of these things and wouldn’t recognize the scents. I, however, had dealt closely with the things that walked the night. I scented a gorgon, a chimera, at least one feral shifter, and, if I wasn’t mistaken, a wyvern. The stories were true. Bloodstone Island really was as dangerous as they said. Even with my training and experience, the sheer number of creatures was enough to douse my guts with cold fear.“Onward, boys. Mustn’t keep the camera waiting,” Von said as he pushed to the front. “Don’t bother shifting if you’re scared. No need. The island is carefully controlled and monitored for the challenges and tasks. This is one such special occasion. I assure you, everyone is safe. Come, come. Don’t dally.” Von strode ahead of us, completely unconcerned.Hadn’t he just made a huge deal about how dangerous it was to be away from the mansion at night? He’d made it sound like the showrunners were controlling more than they let on. De
If I bit the big one on day one, the showrunners wouldn’t bat an eye. With death around every corner on The Reject Project, they always had a few women waiting in the wings. Sentimentality was not a word associated with this show. They’d toss my body in a bag and call up the next female in line. It happened a lot. In fact, when the prize mate died, the show’s ratings went through the roof. But I’d be damned if I let some other woman take the prize. I had too much at stake.Tired of waiting for me to react, the tiger shifter snarled and leaped at me. The orange-and-black fur streaked forward faster than any natural animal. With its claws extended, the shifter swiped at the air by my face. The only thing that saved me from having my throat opened was my reflexes. I bent backward, pulling my face out of range, then danced back to put space between the shifter and myself.I regained my balance just as the cat lunged again, swinging both paws forward to catch me in some kind of deadly hug.
