Eira's POV
My eyes rested on the Grand Cross son. He had wine red hair and intimidating amber eyes with a tall muscular body - he had a medium build so he was just right. He stood beside the Grand Duke's son. His tan skin complimented his hair and eye color so perfectly. Mom must have noticed my fascination which made her clear her throat to get my attention. “ Cleo, this is Kia Charlemagne, a Grand Commander and the son of the Grand Cross. And this is Anakin Valois, the son of the Grand Duke as well as a Grand Commander,” mom introduced. Grand Commander? At their age? My jaw dropped slightly. Kia looked barely older than twenty-four and same goes for Anakin. How did they achieve that at this age? My eyes settled on Anakin. I hadn't taken a proper look at him because I was so lost in Kia’s handsomeness - not that I mean anything by that. On the other hand, Anakin was the total opposite of Kia. He was slender and had a feminine look to him, maybe that had something to do with his long hair and the way he bound it. He had long sky-blue hair with soft hazel eyes. I don't know why but I began to wonder if he could really fight with such a delicate appearance. He didn't even seem like one who would like to get himself stained. “ Nice to meet you, Sir Kia and Sir Anakin,” I genuflected.I tried my best not to look Kia in the eye because my heart was beating too fast for comfort. “It’s a pleasure, Your Highness,” Kia replied, before taking my hand in his and kissing the back of my palm. A blush crept up my cheeks, despite knowing this was a normal gesture. I was sort of disappointed with Kia rigid response but Kia kissing my hand was more than enough compensation. Anakin, on the other hand, was all smiles. “You’re even more beautiful in person, Princess Cleo. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you.” He took my hand and kissed it gently, his touch sending a tingle up my arm. “ Anakin, stop flirting,” Kia sighed. It was like he was expecting him to do so. How close were they? “ I'm not, it's called being a gentleman. Something you lack,” Anakin retorted. “Don’t be intimidated by Kia’s stoic face and rigid behavior,” Anakin pointed at Kia with a wide grin. He playfully placed his hand on Kia’s shoulder. “He’s really a teddy bear on the inside,” he added making me laugh. I quickly covered my lips wondering how he had made me drop my defensive walls in his presence. That was probably Anakin's charm - he's free-spirited, cheerful and chivalrous nature. Kia swatted his hand away. His face was neither displeased nor pleased - that must mean he actually doesn't mind. “Shut up, Anakin.” A question popped out of my mouth before I could stop myself. “Are you two close?” Why the hell did I just ask that? What the hell was wrong with me? This was just a formal meeting, why was I bothered about knowing more about them? Anakin’s eyes widened dramatically, before his usual broad smile appeared. “We might as well be married,” he joked. A wave of awkwardness washed over me. What was that all about? “What the hell are you yapping about?” Kia glared at him. Anakin laughed. “ Sorry, Princess Cleo. I didn't mean to shock you but I also wanted to see your reaction and his reaction. And dare I say, I was quite satisfied?” He smirked. “ We’re best friends. We’ve been inseparable since we were kids,” he sighed with a shrug. “ More like you stuck to me like glue,” Kia furrowed his brows. “ Haha! That's what you've always said but you never got rid of me,” Anakin said with a confident grin. I could tell that having Anakin as his best friend was exhausting. My dad, the emperor, cleared his throat, drawing our attention. “ Kia, my boy, I have a favor to ask,” dad held Kia’s shoulders. “ Shouldn't you be more formal with me, Your Majesty?” Kia reminded. How close were our families because this looked like something that happens often. “ Sir Ivan, I can't believe Kia’s growing up. He won't even let me refer to him casually when I'd watch him run around the palace with Anakin. Though, it was Anakin who'd always initiate that,” dad mumbled the last part. “ He has always told you that from a young age, though,” the Grand Cross reminded with a sigh. “ You can't possibly be gossiping me in my presence now, Your Majesty,” Anakin laughed. I had no idea our families were this close. “ So Kia, you really won't let me call you informally?” Dad was persistent. “ I'd prefer you refer to me formally especially in public. You're supposed to be the Emperor, Your Majesty,” Kia really was rigid. “ Fine, I won't bug you any further so back to the favor, Sir Kia,” dad let go of him. “Your wish is my command, Your Majesty,” he responded, his left hand to his chest. “I would like you to be Cleo’s personal trainer and guard in the meantime,” dad's request nearly had my jaw dropping. Did he just ask a Grand Commander to become my personal guard??? A flicker of annoyance crossed Kia’s face. “Your Imperial Majesty, I’m afraid that would be difficult. I have duties to attend to,” Kia politely declined which is rather normal. Dad chuckled. “Of course, of course, I understand the point you're making. But I can’t risk losing my daughter again. I need to know she’s safe.” Kia hesitated, his jaw clenched. “I understand your concern, Your Majesty, but there are other knights who are more suited for this task.” “ I know there are but it would be nice if I had the best knight in the whole empire guard my daughter and personally teach her how to fight,” dad was persistent and this was making me embarrassed. Kia was probably not going to look at me the way again. Would be think I asked for this? Or would he think I'm spoilt because I think I can get whatever I want just because I'm the princess? I'm doomed. My mom who had been silent until now, spoke up. “ Kia, I would be honored if you would agree to protect my daughter.” Kia's face turned a shade paler. He bowed his head and got on his knees as my mom approached him. “ But, Your Majesty…” it was obvious that he wasn't pleased but he couldn't say a thing to my mom. In Azurethra Empire, the empress had more value than the emperor and her words were final. No one could override any order she gives because she is the reason for the prosperity of the lycans and hence worshipped. From everything I had been taught in history class since I arrived, the first empress or rather leader of the lycans after a war that occurred thousands of years ago, was the daughter of the Moon Goddess. The Moon Goddess had a daughter who is my direct ancestor and due to that fact, we are the only family that shares blood with a deity so we had not just unique features but special powers. “ Are you still going to reject my request, Sir Kia?” Mom questioned. “ I would never, Your Highness. I'll do as you have commanded,” Kia has no other choice but to give in. “ I'm glad you've accepted it, Kia,” mom smiled as she addressed him informally. Kissing dad on the cheeks, she excused herself to talk to some other noble ladies. At least this was over…or so I thought. My eye's caught Kia’s fiery gaze glaring at me as he got to his feet, sending shivers down my spine. It was a look of pure annoyance, and it was directed at me. “ I'm not in the position to talk to you, Your Highness but I don't think you're going to have an easier time with him as your trainer especially with just happened,” Mona voiced my thoughts in a low voice. He probably hates me the most right now. Good job, dad. “ If that's all, I'll take my leave, Your Majesty,” Kia bowed to my dad before turning to leave. “ You're really leaving? ” Anakin questioned with twisted brows. “ Yes and you're coming with me,” he said grabbing him by the arm and pulling him away. “ Why the hell do I have to come with you? You're the one who wants to leave, not me,” Anakin struggled to get out of his grip. “ It's not like you have anything beneficial you want to do here. You're just going to flirt with different ladies,” Kia pulled him. “ Ladies are beneficial, if you don't know. Besides, since when did my flirting and love life interest you? I mean, I'd yap about it but you never paid attention,” Anakin accused. “ Just because I didn't answer you doesn't mean I didn't listen. Besides, even if I decided not to listen, it's not like you'd stop talking about it anyway,” Kia rolled his eyeballs. “ Hey! Guess who's been paying attention in class?” Anakin teased. He had fun frustrating Kia. As they walked away from where I was, my heart sank. I felt empty and broken, I didn't want it to end like this. “ W-wait…” I went after them and grabbed Kia’s hand. Was I crazy? “ Your Highness…” he wore a confused and surprised expression. Just then, the booming announcement of the ballroom dance came. I knew I would regret this later but still, I couldn't let him leave like that. “ W-will you have this dance with me, Sir Kia?!” With my cheeks a bright red, I might have raised my voice a little louder than I had wanted. The ballroom went silent and everyone stared at us. This was so embarrassing, what would I do if Kia were to reject me? I would literally die but I don't think I would be able to bring myself to blame him either, after all I would hate me if I were in his shoes right now. As he stared down at me, I turned my head away in embarrassment. Why did I have to act impulsively? But then again, the princess would need to start the ballroom dance and I needed a partner.Eira's POV This was getting awkward, especially for me. With the gaze of the whole empire on I and Kia, I regretted my choice. I might have been able to endure this if he didn't look at me with those piercing eyes of his like that. “ Just kill me,” I muttered. “ Huh? You want me to dance with you? What makes you think I'd agree to that?” He snapped. I knew I shouldn't have acted impulsively. “ T-that's…” I stuttered. How was I going to explain him that I didn't even pre-plan what just happened!? “ First, you have me become your personal guard and trainer just because you're the princess and now you want to make me your dance partner. You've got to be kidding me,” he scoffed. I knew my parents had ruined his image of me. “ Well, I'm here for the sauce,” Anakin watched in amusement rather than help resolve. What was I really expecting from him? He was clearly acting exactly how I had assumed he would. “ Are you going to use your position or the
Eira's POV The next week I heard my door swing open violently but I couldn't be bothered to see who it was. Well, I could already guess. My parents wouldn't do such and no maid could do the only person it can be is… “ Your Highness! You're going to be late!” Mona exclaimed, breathless. “ Urgh! I don't have anything doing, my tutors aren't coming today either,” I groaned, snuggling up my duvet. “ Are you really going back to sleep again? Do you even know what today is?” Mona asked frustrated. I was genuinely the one frustrated at this point because she was interrupting my sleep. “ It's a day in the week. Happy?” “ Argh! Sometimes, you can be so…impossible,” she groaned. She didn't say anything for a few seconds, she was probably calming herself. I couldn't be bothered right now. “ Today is Monday. Did you forget you are to have classes with Sir Kia?” She reminded calmly. “ What did you just say?” I sat up like a log of wood. “ You've been daydreaming about Sir Kia f
Eira's POV “ How am I going to explain myself now?” I mumbled. “ I'm sorry, Your Highness but I can't help you with this. I'll be sitting in the arena watching you, just try not to die on me,” Mona bowed before leaving I and Sir Kia on the training ground. “ Do you have an issue keeping up with time, Princess Cleo?” He growled. “ I…,” telling him I slept in due to my forgetfulness would only make things worse. “ You have training with me today but you decided to take your good time to arrive. Do you really think I have nothing better to do?” He asked rhetorically. “ I-its not that. I just totally forgot that I had training with you today,” I mumbled the last part. “ If I drag this out for too long, I might eventually speak out of line,” he inhaled to calm himself. At least, he didn't make me serve any punishment. “ Get on the ground and give me fifty,” he ordered. “ W-what? ” I stuttered. He didn't mean what I think he said - just when I was
Eira's POV As much as I had been anticipating lunch due to all the training I had gone through this morning, what I wasn't expecting was having these two at the table. “ It's like you don't age, Your Majesty. Tell me your secret,” Anakin rested his chin on his interlocked fingers. I was yet to understand why my parents seemed more like Sir Kia and Sir Anakin's uncle and aunty rather than some royal figures. Leaving that aside, why was I made to sit between them? It felt like every essence of this pair of best friends haunted my very existence. This was awkward. “ Anakin, are you trying to flirt with my wife?” Dad questioned with a chuckle. “ Certainly not, Your Majesty,” Anakin laughed. “ It's just us now, Anakin. You and Kia can talk casually,” dad shrugged. “ Yes, I prefer that. Don't you think so too, Kia?” Mom smiled. Was I the only person here who had no clue what was going on? “ If you say so, uncle,” Anakin addressed dad. “ Since when
Eira's POV Their conversation went on. I was barely interested anymore after Kia’s words. “ You'll be moving in today, right?” Mom asked Kia. “ Yes. Since I'm to protect Princess Cleo, it would be best to move on here,” he answered with a small nod. “ I'm moving in too with him,” Anakin beamed, once again finding a way to latch on. “ Are you sure about that? You're not even training Cleo,” dad was a bit concerned. “ Don't overthink it, uncle. It's not a bother at all and besides, I've decided to train Princess Cleo on a certain area,” his gaze moved from my dad to me. My normal self would have shoved his face aside but I barely even had appetite to eat, talk more of dealing with Anakin. “ If you say so,” dad agreed. “ Why aren't you eating? You've been picking at your food for a while now,” Anakin was always the first to notice minor things like this. “ Didn't I tell you to go to the Royal infirmary? Why are you so stubborn? I don't really care
Eira's POV Mom walked in after knocking, her face though wearing a calm expression seemed worried. Did she notice my attitude in the dining room? “ Mom? Do you need me for anything?” I asked, getting up to my feet. Mona on the other hand was already on her feet with her head bowed. “ No…actually yes,” she tilted her head as if she wasn't sure how to put it. “ What is it?” I asked curiously. “ Oh, it's nothing major. I just want us to have tea together in one of the gazebos in the garden,” she offered. “ Sure, I'd love to,” I beamed. My parents were always busy though they made sure to have time for me but I had a feeling it was going to be a little more than that which made me kind of nervous. “ I'll take my leave then, Your Majesty,” Mona genuflected before attempting to move. “ Ahh, there's no need for that. We'll be having tea outside so you can stay if you want,” mom stopped her. “ But, Y-Your Majesty, this is Her Highness’ room. I shouldn't
Eira's POV “ What? Girl talk??” I blinked rapidly in shock. “ Are you that surprised by what I said?” Mom giggled. “ But you're joking right?” I still doubted. “ Why would I? If we hadn't lost you for so long, then you'd have been used to this by now because that's one thing I've always wanted to do with you,” she rubbed her thumb against the tea cup. Her words made me wonder how hurt she must have been when she lost me. “ Now you have me with you,” I placed a hand over hers, smiling broadly at her. “ So what exactly is the center of this girl's talk?” I questioned. “ You're in love with Kia, aren't you?” Mom hit the nail on the head. Mona nearly choked on her tea while I found myself turning super red. “ Both your reactions say a lot, you know.” “ W-what g-gave you that idea?” I stuttered, still flustered by her question. My heart raced faster and faster for no reason. “ Hmm, so you don't love him?” Mom asked casually. “ No, I don't,”
Eira's POV After our talk with my mom, I and Mona headed back inside. Maybe I should really consider taking Mom's advice. “ Mom may be right, maybe I should take the first step,” I said to Mona who walked behind me. “ I'll do my best to support you but just try not to be too forward about it,” Mona advised. “ Even if I wanted to be forward about it, I don't think I can drop my pride to throw myself at him like that,” I sighed. I wasn't crazy enough to do something so embarrassing as throwing myself at him. “ Heyyy! Princess Cleo, you left so suddenly. Are you feeling better?” Anakin popped out of one of the rooms as I walked through the hallway. “ I never said I was feeling terrible to begin with,” I frowned. “ A thank you for asking would have sufficed though,” he winked. “ Ahem… There's something I wanted to ask you,” I cleared my throat. “ Hmm, this is new. It seemed like you weren't fond of me for quite a while,” he picked his ears nonchalant
Eira's POV “ I want to get scarfs,” I pointed at a shop that sold all types and designs of scarfs. “ Alright, we'll be outside waiting for you or would you prefer us to help you pick out scarfs for you?” Kia asked. I hated how he acted like my personal guard even though he was. Why can't he be less professional??? “ Oo! Oo!!” Anakin raised his hand like he was the one Kia was asking. “ I can see you have a splendid taste in things, Cleo and the winter is approaching. But given your inexperience in shopping, I think it'll be a good idea for me to follow you in,” he cleared his throat. “ Absolutely, not,” Kia hit the back of his head. “ Cleo will decide that and I don't think if she had to take anyone it would be you,” Kia snapped at him. “ Prin…Cleo, what's your decision?” Mona nearly added my title. “ Yes, what's your decision? Should we…” “ Just stay outside and don't you think of coming in with me. I'm talking to the both of you!” I raised my
Eira's POV We walked into the main streets and at least I and Kia were finally paired up. Mona and Anakin walked behind us arguing all the way. “ Is there any place in particular you'd like to go to, Your Highness?” Kia asked. Why was he still addressing me formally? “ Erm…” “ What am I saying? I doubt you know anywhere. Aren't you always in the palace?” He asked rhetorically, not once making eye contact with me. “ You don't really have to put it that way,” I sighed. Besides, he was one to talk like he wasn't from a similar family background with me. “ If you see anything that you like as we're walking, you can tell me so we'll get it for you,” he informed. I thought after winning him in today's sparring session that he'd treat me more like a friend or at least treat me like he would treat his fellow knights but here he is treating me like something fragile and naive. I hated it. “ Can I do that as well? I know a lot of great places we can buy thi
Eira's POV I ended up wearing something casual, well at least that's what the other maids and Mona claimed. This was anything but casual. They had picked out a matching pair of a cross-button shirt and a slim fitting trouser. The cross-button shirt came with a cape and badges of all kinds, it was also laced with gold chains hanging from it's breast pocket. I wore a white glove to match my seemingly casual look. “ When you said casual, this wasn't what I had in mind,” I whispered to Mona as we headed outside. “ You said you wanted casual, not something cheap,” she answered. “ Besides, how in the world did you convince yourself that you were going to find cheap clothes in your wardrobe? Have you forgotten that you're supposed to be the princess?” Mona nagged. “ Maybe I should just get that then while I'm in the market. Cheap clothes are perfect for outings,” I stated, living a low profile life once in a while wouldn't be that bad. “ Don't think of doing an
Eira's POV Three months later Months had passed by since I began training with Kia and Anakin. I honestly was out doing myself, who knew I'd have a talent in fighting? “ Are you ready for today? You do know that today is D-Day,” Mona said walking behind me as we headed towards the training ground. “ Honestly, I'm freaking out inside and your question isn't exactly helping to calm me down,” I said, taking a deep breath. “ I know I'm not helping right now but you've really improved. With your current ability, you're definitely a lot stronger than the lower ranking knights. Your current strength is on par with Class III knights which rather impressive. No one shots up the ranks this easily,” she analyzed. She certainly knew a lot about knights. “ I doubt my skills are up that level though,” I sighed, depressed. “ Do you think you'd be able to win?” Mona kept bombarding me with questions. “ Take a good look at me and ask me that question again,” I squ
Eira's POV The moon shone down on the palace, giving it an otherworldly radiance which made everything familiar appear strange and enticing at the same time. I looked sideways at Mona whose eyes gleamed with excitement mixed with uncertainty as she was already half way out of the door. I never one day thought I'd be sneaking out…it felt criminal. “ I have no idea why my heart keeps pounding,” I sighed. “ Then we can just decide not to go,” I knew Mona wanted this outcome more than anyone else. “ No! I can't just stand Anakin up,” I said in a hushed tone. “ I'd actually love to see the look on his face if that happened,” she really didn't get along with him.We silently moved through the deserted corridors of the palace covered in thick carpets that muted our footsteps. The air remained still and silent except for the breeze that let themselves in, every now and then. As we drew near, a figure became visible in the darkness. “ Sir Anakin?” I calle
