Eira's POV
I was lying on the bed, scrutinizing the detailed ceiling with a mixture of worry and excitement . This was the night; the one where I was to be presented to the empire officially as its princess. It has been a month since I had arrived in this gilded cage, learning grace in etiquette, dancing and history for thirty days. The idea of standing in front of the imperial court whose members would expectantly stare at me made shivers run down my spine . Yet, I felt a bit thrilled to be in this situation. “Princess Cleo,” Mona’s voice, soft and kind, pulled me away from my thoughts. “Are you hearing what I am saying?” I blinked at her worried expression. Mona, who was my maid-in-waiting, had become something more than just a servant to me. We grew close nearly instantly, she was sincere and yet not easily swayed. I could tell she genuinely liked me for who I am not my title. In many ways she had become both an advisor and my reference point, you could say we had become close friends. "Of course, Mona," I replied, sitting up. "I'm just... nervous." Mona's expression softened. "I understand you, Cleo. It's a big night. But remember, you’re going to be amazing. You've worked so hard, and I know you'll do great!” I appreciated her understanding. "I just hope I won’t forget everything," I confessed. "What if I stumble or say something wrong?" Mona seized hold of my hands. “You won’t.” And even if you did, it doesn’t matter. Everybody makes mistakes; what is important is how you enjoy tonight. After all, tonight is all about you and whoever has a problem with that can wish to be the Crown princess in her next life.” Her words were comforting, though kind of scary but it was comforting nonetheless. “I hope so,” I said with a little doubt lingering behind me. Pulling me up from where I sat, she insisted. “Let’s go choose your dress for tonight!” Several new gowns had arrived earlier in the day, each more extravagant than the last. My final decision after much thought was to go with a ball gown of bluish-white color, which had delicate silver embroidery on it. The moment Mona saw this she could not hide her approval. “Your Highness, this is the perfect choice. I think this compliments your appearance very well.” A thought occurred to me, “And what are you going to wear, Mona?” “Don’t bother about me, Princess,” was her dismissive reply. “My clothes are nothing special.” “ How can I not be bothered about what you're going to wear when we're supposed to be friends? What do you take me for?” I shook my head and sighed. “ I didn't mean that you aren't considerate, Your Highness. I just don't think you need to worry about me,” she was determined to convince me. “ You know better than anyone else right now that I'm not about to stop, right?” I looked at her. “ Princess Cleo…” she sighed, unsure of what else to say. Knowing how persistent we both are, I pressed on. "Wear the yellow ball gown that just arrived. It's stunning." Mona's eyes widened in disbelief. "Princess, you can't be serious. I can't possibly bring myself to wear something this expensive.” I could see the conflict in her eyes. She wanted to accept, but pride, guilt, inferiority complex and self-doubt held her back. I sighed. "Mona, I insist. You're my friend and you don't expect me to let you go out in your regular clothes just because you're my maid-in-waiting, do you? Besides, my parents won't mind so I don't think you have to be worried,” I beamed, reassuringly. “ But still…” she hesitated. “ I understand you better than you think, trust me. I've lived majority of my life in poverty or mediocrity so I understand how you feel right now. If you still think this dress is too flashy for you, then I have an idea,” I said, walking over to my wardrobe. “ Your Highness? What are you doing?” Mona seemed very confused. “ Here. Wear this instead,” I handed her a green velvet dress which matched the color of her eyes. It was a long, loose-fitting gown with a fitted bodice and a low necklace coupled with long loose sleeves. It was perfectly matched with a golden chain belt. “ This should do. It's pretty, flattering and not too flashy so no more excuses,” I ruled out. Finally, she gave in with a resigned sigh. " Very well, Your Highness. But don't go around giving me things like this. I might even end up getting targeted by the other maids,” “ I doubt they would do anything even if they didn't like you because they know fully well what would happen to them so don't think too much about it,” I patted her head. “ Why are you patting me?” She mumbled. Before I could say anything else, there was a knock on the door. "Princess Cleo, we are ready to begin your preparations," a soft voice announced. >>>>>>>>>>> Descending from the staircases, my heart beat hard against my chest. I was finally going to be announced officially to the entire empire. The grand hall resembled an ocean full of glittering gowns and magnificent dresses. As soon as we reached the end, silence descended upon everybody present. “Announcing the arrival of Her Highness, Princess Cleo; heir to Azurethra’s Throne,” sounded a booming voice throughout the hall. Everyone’s eyes focused on me. Whenever I gazed at the beautiful hall, my eyes met the expectant eyes of the dignitaries in attendance which made my heart race faster than ever. I had a lump in my throat and could barely take a deep breath. With the white color of my hair, which was snow – white and clear blue eyes shining like sapphires that radiated light, they said I was a little version of my mother. Though, I had more unique features. I approached the raised platform where my parents were and made a deep curtsy towards them. The glances exchanged between us held a mix of warmth from love and pride that made my heart swell with joy. My dad, the emperor, stepped forward to make a speech. “My people,” he began, “ Tonight is special for the Royal family and the kingdom as a whole. Our long lost daughter has finally been found after so long and we're beyond overjoyed to present her before everyone. We hope that you'll join us tonight to celebrate a day as special as this.” A wave of applause erupted as my mother placed a tiara upon my head. I was officially the Imperial Princess of Azurethra. A nervous smile crept onto my face as my father handed me a crystal goblet filled with a shimmering liquid. "Your Highness, would you grace us with a toast?" I took a deep breath, my heart pounding within my chest. I had rehearsed this more times than I can recount. I raised the goblet, my voice steady despite the trembling within. " To my family, to my empire, and to a future filled with prosperity and unity." The applause that followed was deafening. As the initial excitement died down, I found myself standing awkwardly by one of the round tables as my parents were attending to the nobles that had come to congratulate us. I glanced around, searching for a familiar face. My eyes landed on Mona, who stood nervously among the maids. "Mona," I mouthed, gesturing for her to join me. She hesitated, her eyes wide with worry. "Princess, it wouldn't be right-" I shook my head, my voice barely audible. "Please. It's weird being alone here. Besides, you're not exactly blending in with the maids looking like that." She glanced around nervously before finally nodding. I knew she was tired of my friendly requests but at the same time, she didn't mind. She blended easily into the crowd, the gown was really meant for her. "This is nerve-wracking," I whispered to her as we stood side by side. Mona offered a sympathetic smile. "I know, Your Highness. But you're doing amazing." Just as we were about to delve deeper into our conversation, my parents approached us. "Cleo, honey," my mother began, her voice soft, "there are some important people we'd like you to meet,” she smiled. “ Meet the Grand Cross and the Grand Duke, and their sons,” dad introduced. I genuflected. “ It's a pleasure to meet you, Your Grace. It's an honor to meet you, Sir,” I paid my respects to them. I knew they were the two most powerful families after the imperial family. As I raised my head, my eyes settled on their sons. I couldn't take my eyes off the the one with red hair, I felt butterflies in my belly and I could hear my heartbeat increase rapidly. What was this feeling called?Eira's POV My eyes rested on the Grand Cross son. He had wine red hair and intimidating amber eyes with a tall muscular body - he had a medium build so he was just right. He stood beside the Grand Duke's son. His tan skin complimented his hair and eye color so perfectly. Mom must have noticed my fascination which made her clear her throat to get my attention. “ Cleo, this is Kia Charlemagne, a Grand Commander and the son of the Grand Cross. And this is Anakin Valois, the son of the Grand Duke as well as a Grand Commander,” mom introduced. Grand Commander? At their age? My jaw dropped slightly. Kia looked barely older than twenty-four and same goes for Anakin. How did they achieve that at this age? My eyes settled on Anakin. I hadn't taken a proper look at him because I was so lost in Kia’s handsomeness - not that I mean anything by that. On the other hand, Anakin was the total opposite of Kia. He was slender and had a feminine look to him, maybe that had so
Eira's POV This was getting awkward, especially for me. With the gaze of the whole empire on I and Kia, I regretted my choice. I might have been able to endure this if he didn't look at me with those piercing eyes of his like that. “ Just kill me,” I muttered. “ Huh? You want me to dance with you? What makes you think I'd agree to that?” He snapped. I knew I shouldn't have acted impulsively. “ T-that's…” I stuttered. How was I going to explain him that I didn't even pre-plan what just happened!? “ First, you have me become your personal guard and trainer just because you're the princess and now you want to make me your dance partner. You've got to be kidding me,” he scoffed. I knew my parents had ruined his image of me. “ Well, I'm here for the sauce,” Anakin watched in amusement rather than help resolve. What was I really expecting from him? He was clearly acting exactly how I had assumed he would. “ Are you going to use your position or the
Eira's POV The next week I heard my door swing open violently but I couldn't be bothered to see who it was. Well, I could already guess. My parents wouldn't do such and no maid could do the only person it can be is… “ Your Highness! You're going to be late!” Mona exclaimed, breathless. “ Urgh! I don't have anything doing, my tutors aren't coming today either,” I groaned, snuggling up my duvet. “ Are you really going back to sleep again? Do you even know what today is?” Mona asked frustrated. I was genuinely the one frustrated at this point because she was interrupting my sleep. “ It's a day in the week. Happy?” “ Argh! Sometimes, you can be so…impossible,” she groaned. She didn't say anything for a few seconds, she was probably calming herself. I couldn't be bothered right now. “ Today is Monday. Did you forget you are to have classes with Sir Kia?” She reminded calmly. “ What did you just say?” I sat up like a log of wood. “ You've been daydreaming about Sir Kia f
Eira's POV “ How am I going to explain myself now?” I mumbled. “ I'm sorry, Your Highness but I can't help you with this. I'll be sitting in the arena watching you, just try not to die on me,” Mona bowed before leaving I and Sir Kia on the training ground. “ Do you have an issue keeping up with time, Princess Cleo?” He growled. “ I…,” telling him I slept in due to my forgetfulness would only make things worse. “ You have training with me today but you decided to take your good time to arrive. Do you really think I have nothing better to do?” He asked rhetorically. “ I-its not that. I just totally forgot that I had training with you today,” I mumbled the last part. “ If I drag this out for too long, I might eventually speak out of line,” he inhaled to calm himself. At least, he didn't make me serve any punishment. “ Get on the ground and give me fifty,” he ordered. “ W-what? ” I stuttered. He didn't mean what I think he said - just when I was
Eira's POV As much as I had been anticipating lunch due to all the training I had gone through this morning, what I wasn't expecting was having these two at the table. “ It's like you don't age, Your Majesty. Tell me your secret,” Anakin rested his chin on his interlocked fingers. I was yet to understand why my parents seemed more like Sir Kia and Sir Anakin's uncle and aunty rather than some royal figures. Leaving that aside, why was I made to sit between them? It felt like every essence of this pair of best friends haunted my very existence. This was awkward. “ Anakin, are you trying to flirt with my wife?” Dad questioned with a chuckle. “ Certainly not, Your Majesty,” Anakin laughed. “ It's just us now, Anakin. You and Kia can talk casually,” dad shrugged. “ Yes, I prefer that. Don't you think so too, Kia?” Mom smiled. Was I the only person here who had no clue what was going on? “ If you say so, uncle,” Anakin addressed dad. “ Since when
Eira's POV Their conversation went on. I was barely interested anymore after Kia’s words. “ You'll be moving in today, right?” Mom asked Kia. “ Yes. Since I'm to protect Princess Cleo, it would be best to move on here,” he answered with a small nod. “ I'm moving in too with him,” Anakin beamed, once again finding a way to latch on. “ Are you sure about that? You're not even training Cleo,” dad was a bit concerned. “ Don't overthink it, uncle. It's not a bother at all and besides, I've decided to train Princess Cleo on a certain area,” his gaze moved from my dad to me. My normal self would have shoved his face aside but I barely even had appetite to eat, talk more of dealing with Anakin. “ If you say so,” dad agreed. “ Why aren't you eating? You've been picking at your food for a while now,” Anakin was always the first to notice minor things like this. “ Didn't I tell you to go to the Royal infirmary? Why are you so stubborn? I don't really care
Eira's POV Mom walked in after knocking, her face though wearing a calm expression seemed worried. Did she notice my attitude in the dining room? “ Mom? Do you need me for anything?” I asked, getting up to my feet. Mona on the other hand was already on her feet with her head bowed. “ No…actually yes,” she tilted her head as if she wasn't sure how to put it. “ What is it?” I asked curiously. “ Oh, it's nothing major. I just want us to have tea together in one of the gazebos in the garden,” she offered. “ Sure, I'd love to,” I beamed. My parents were always busy though they made sure to have time for me but I had a feeling it was going to be a little more than that which made me kind of nervous. “ I'll take my leave then, Your Majesty,” Mona genuflected before attempting to move. “ Ahh, there's no need for that. We'll be having tea outside so you can stay if you want,” mom stopped her. “ But, Y-Your Majesty, this is Her Highness’ room. I shouldn't
Eira's POV “ What? Girl talk??” I blinked rapidly in shock. “ Are you that surprised by what I said?” Mom giggled. “ But you're joking right?” I still doubted. “ Why would I? If we hadn't lost you for so long, then you'd have been used to this by now because that's one thing I've always wanted to do with you,” she rubbed her thumb against the tea cup. Her words made me wonder how hurt she must have been when she lost me. “ Now you have me with you,” I placed a hand over hers, smiling broadly at her. “ So what exactly is the center of this girl's talk?” I questioned. “ You're in love with Kia, aren't you?” Mom hit the nail on the head. Mona nearly choked on her tea while I found myself turning super red. “ Both your reactions say a lot, you know.” “ W-what g-gave you that idea?” I stuttered, still flustered by her question. My heart raced faster and faster for no reason. “ Hmm, so you don't love him?” Mom asked casually. “ No, I don't,”
