ISABELLE’S POV
I sat up in shock and my back immediately straightened. I glanced around the room and clutched my head in frustration. “I’m doomed!” I shrieked, feeling the weight of my wolf’s words slowly sink in. I am going to die.
“If you’re still fixated on Rowan, you’re just wasting the time you have. The clock keeps ticking and when the time is over you will die” my wolf replied.
I bit my lip, fear clawing at my heart, my mind drifted to Beta Rowan, his devastatingly handsome face and green eyes, his confidence and intelligence shining through every command. That was what I admired most about him—his sharp mind and wit.
I knew what people in the pack whispered in secret when they thought I couldn't hear them. They all call me the lazy and foolish princess and the only reason I was protected was my brother. And Rowan was the opposite of that, he had raw power in his mind.
“Isabelle,” my wolf’s calm voice broke through my thoughts. “With your looks and your status as a princess, you don’t need to cling to one man, begging him to give you a single glance. Especially not a man who has never returned your affection not even once.”
My heart twisted with the words hurt but she continued. “You are a princess and now you have a strong and clever wolf, you need to forget about him.”
As her words slowly dawned on me, I realised my wolf was right. For years, I have begged Rowan to respond to my advances, chasing him as my life depended on it, waiting for a glance, a smile, or anything from him.
And what has all that gotten me? Absolutely nothing.
Just cold rejection over and over again—and now, even worse, a life-threatening curse. Maybe it was finally time to let go of him.
“What would you have me do, then?” I murmured. “Should I go out on the street and find men that are interested in me?” I asked.
“No!” she growled in response. “You can't do that. I can sense the right ones, and I'll help you find your next target.”
I raised a brow, considering her plan. I needed to do this, right now I had no other option. I have to look for my next target.
But just as the thought crossed my mind, a soft knock sounded at my door, and one of my maids entered, bowing deeply.
“Princess Isabelle, Beta Rowan is here to visit,” the maid announced.
“Rowan?” I echoed with surprise. My expression tightened as the maid nodded. That was weird, Rowan has never come to see me before.
What was he doing here and what did he want?
I sat up, brushing my tangled hair away from my face. “Show him in,” I ordered.
A second later, Rowan stepped into the room. His tall frame commanded attention, even in my own chambers.
His expression was solemn, his lips in a tight grim line and worry lines on his forehead.
“Beta Rowan,” I began with a curt smile, suppressing the warmth that bloomed through me from his gaze.
“Princess Isabelle,” he greeted in a low gruff voice, “I need your help.”
My eyes widened slightly, my interest piqued. “What is it?”
“It’s about Matilda,” he replied, his voice strained. “She’s set to be executed tomorrow,” he stated gravely. “She has been punished under charges of attempting to harm you even though she's not guilty.”
My heart dropped as I listened to him. I never planned for Matilda to be charged with such crimes and executed.
All I wanted was to provoke her a bit and tease her because of our rivalry. I never expected to slip and fall into the water and nearly drown.
I had no idea things would escalate like this and I can't let it go on.
“Executed?” I echoed, guilt clawing inside me. “But… she’s not guilty. It was merely an accident.”
“Yes, and you need to make that clear to everyone,” Rowan said, his eyes sparking with urgency. “You need to tell the council the truth and stop her execution before it's too late.”
My wolf paced within me. “This is a chance to speak for Matilda so you can distance yourself from Rowan. And also show the rest of the pack that you’re not single-mindedly in love with him. Other men would see they have a chance with you instead of appearing obsessed with one person.”
I swallowed hard, considering my wolf’s suggestion. I can't deny that she was actually right.
But I just couldn't imagine letting Rowan go, not after I have loved him for such a long time. He was my first love and all I wanted was for him to fall for me too.
I blinked back tears as I struggled with myself. Would I really have to let Rowan go?
My heart cracked as the answer swirled in my mind. Yes, I have no other choice.
If I were to stop myself from dying when the time ran out, I would need the pack and men to see me as more than just a weak foolish girl infatuated with one man.
I straightened our gazes meeting, gritting my teeth hard to hold back my whirling emotions. “Fine. I’ll come with you to my brother's palace to clear up all misunderstandings about Matilda and stop her execution”
Instant relief washed over Rowan's features and his tight expression melted. “Thank you, Isabelle.” He whispered with a heart melting grin.
He turned to leave but I called out for him. “Rowan,” I shouted with urgency.
He froze in the doorway and turned back to me, his usual calm detached mask already back on.
I took a breath to steady myself as he watched me curiously. “Rowan,” I breathed, my voice cracking with emotions, “I need to tell you something now.”
He raised a brow in confusion as he turned back fully, his gaze locked unto mine almost breaking my resolve. My heart was pounding wildly but I steeled myself. I need to do this, if I want to survive.
“I just want you to know… I won’t be chasing you anymore. And from now on, I think it would be a good idea if I kept a little distance away from you.”
His expression shifted, a hint of surprise flickering through his expression.
“What are you saying, Isabelle?”
I gave him a small, tight smile. “ I just don't want to complicate this.” I whispered.
His dark gaze lingered on me, filled with confusion and an unreadable expression.
I held his gaze, my heart racing. “Let’s go to the palace.” I whispered.
ISABELLE’S POVI stood by my window, watching as snow fell thick and heavy, blanketing the grounds in pristine white. My maids rushed around me, changing me out of my dress and brushing through my tangled knots. My mind was racing with the ordeal of today. I could still feel the presence of my wolf in my mind even when she was silent. My maids carefully dropped a fur-lined coat over my shoulders, sweeping my hair to the side.I turned around to face the mirror, my eyes inspecting every part of my figure. I looked up above my head, nothing was there but empty air but I knew the truth. There was a timer over my head and when the time ran out, I would die.Desperation clawed through me as I silently begged the goddess for the next target to appear or I would turn the pack upside down to find the person myself. My maid walked between me and the mirror sliding hand warmers onto my hands. I broke away from my thoughts and turned towards the door to leave for the palace.A chill ran throug
ISABELLE’S POVAs I climbed onto the grand palace steps, a surge of warmth spread through me, even in the chilling cold. My gaze stayed fixed on the figure kneeling in the snow. I cast a glance at the guards standing stiffly at attention by the double doors. “Who is that man kneeling in the snow?” I asked, brimming with curiosity. The guards stiffened, and one answered, “That's the pack Zeta, General Kael. He was originally stationed at the border to defend the pack, but he recently returned.”My wolf’s voice echoed in my mind as she pranced around. “This is your chance. Go and introduce yourself.”I considered her suggestion, my gaze flickering back to the figure but I had other priorities right now. One thing first, I thought, pushing down the strange warmth in my chest as I walked into the palace beside Rowan. The huge doors closed with a loud thud behind us and we approached the throne room silently. My brother's face lit up as he saw me, his usually stoic expression breaking
ISABELLE’S POVThe air bristled with tension as I stared at Kael, he stayed kneeling in the thick snow, his expression cold and hardened. His silence stirred something of a mix of frustration and fascination within me.I let out a deep sigh of disappointment. "You’re breaking my heart with your cold demeanour, you know." But still, Kael remained silent, not even a flicker of emotion breaking through his cool mask. So, he’s a tough nut to crack, I mused, feeling a thrill run through me at the challenge. I let go and tossed my cloak and hand warmer at him. “Kneeling here to plead for your brother is pointless. You won't get what you want from the Emperor like this.”Finally, he stirred him, his expression faltering for a second. Kael looked up, and his eyes met mine, momentarily softening as he took in my features. My wolf sensed a faint glint of admiration in his gaze before his face hardened, returning to his icy expression.“What do you mean?” he growled, his tone clipped and sharp
ISABELLE'S POV“But there is something you must know,” Tristan said just as I turned to leave the throne room. “Kael’s brother was not only accused of assault, but he also publicly declared his intent to overthrow my rule.” He continued, his tone steady. My brows shot up as I heard the news, my heart skipping a beat. Rebellion was the highest form of treason in the Night fall pack and was also punishable by death. My wolf bristled, sensing how serious the situation just became. I let out a deep breath, quickly composing myself. “If this news is true,” I said firmly, “I wouldn’t hesitate to carry out the punishment for such a crime myself. No one has the right to challenge our family’s rule and go unpunished.”Tristan’s eyes softened at my words. “We don’t have conclusive proof yet, and there are so many holes in the case that don’t sit right with me.”My interest was instantly piqued and I took a step towards the throne. “Then let me go along with my investigation. I’ll find out t
ISABELLE'S POVAs we rode through the streets, the low hum of the engine, the only sound in the car.I glanced at Kael, it was obvious he was still tense, staring out the window with a furrowed brow as if lost in thought. My wolf whispered pranced, nudging me to break through his stoic prickly exterior.“What did you mean back there?” He asked, his voice filled with curiosity. I leaned slightly towards his warmth, my eyes glinting with mischief. ‘You need to play hard to keep his attention solely on you.’ She suggested.I agreed, a little mystery would keep him on his toes. “Am I beautiful?” I murmured, tilting my head and brushing my hair out of my face with a coy smile.Kael’s face flushed a deep crimson, his body stiffening. “I… yes,” he admitted, in a mere whisper. “Yes, Princess… you are beautiful.” Warmth bloomed inside me, my heart racing at his response. It was all meant to just be a game, or so I thought, yet his words pulled at something deep in me. My wolf hummed with a
ISABELLE'S POVMy eyes narrowed as I watched him lower his head as he admitted, “I did go to the club.”“And did you go alone?” I asked, my tone sharp and firm.He stammered, his face growing pale. My wolf stirred, urging me to press him further for answers. I could sense there was more to what happened that he wasn’t saying. I just needed to scare the truth out of him.“Levi,” I called out, my tone turned icy. “This is your very last chance. Your brother went through so much just to get here and see you, and we both know this prison is crawling with rats and cockroaches. If you don’t want to live like this and then be executed, you’d better be honest with us right now.”His grip on the bars trembled, his lips quivering as he finally broke down. “It wasn’t my idea. A friend… he told me it was a fun place, and I thought we were just going to hang out. I didn’t know it was a club until we got there. When I went in, I… I saw…” He swallowed hard, his face flushing red with embarrassment.
ISABELLE’S POVWhen we arrived at Rowan's house his guards gave me a curious look as I stepped out of the car.My presence here was already a familiar sight to them from the days I used to wait around, eager to see Rowan. They bowed with respect and turned prepared to notify Rowan of my arrival immediately. But there was a spark in my eyes as I announced, “I’m not here for Rowan. I came here to see Thane. Take me to him—now.”The guards froze, murmurs echoing through them at the sudden change. Just then, the door opened, and Rowan himself stepped out, a surprised look on his face that he hid it with a polite smile. But before he could approach us or say a word, I moved to Kael’s side, linking my arm through his. Rowan's eyes flickered with surprise, his gaze fixed on the link between Karl's and my arm.I pulled him closer, raising my voice cheerfully. “I’m so exhausted from the day’s events and would love a nice warm meal. Rowan, be a good host and prepare some food. Thane and his s
ISABELLE’S POVI was satisfied as Kael and I stepped out through the doors of Rowan's house. We have gotten the confirmation we needed: Kael’s brother was innocent of the rape and assault charge, even though the accusation of treason still loomed over him. My wolf nudged me with a sly suggestion, ‘You need to use this opportunity to extract more from Kael. After all, you had already solved half his problem.’ I smirked coyly, feeling a surge of confidence at the chance to take control.Whirling around to face Kael, I let out a casual sigh. “Well, I guess I have fulfilled my promise to prove your brother’s innocence—at least for the assault accusation,” I said, keeping my tone light but watching for his reaction.Kael's head snapped towards me, his eyes meeting mine filled with confusion. “What do you mean Isabelle?” He growled.“I mean, I'm done here. You now have evidence proving your brother is innocent of the assault charges.”“Wait, but we agreed to honour our deal once my brothe
ISABELLE’S POVThe morning light streamed through the tall windows of my chambers, as I stirred in the silk sheets. The heat from last night still lingered in the air. I turned with exhaustion, my movement sending tiny shocks through her muscles and my mind playing a reminder of Kael’s hands on my body, his lips tracing wet kisses along my skin.A gentle knock on the door pulled me away from the memories as I quickly sat up, pulling the sheets closer to my body.“My Lady,” my maid's soft voice called through the door. One of my maids stepped inside, a basin of warm water in her hands. Her cheeks flushed red with heat as her gaze landed on the scattered bed and my naked body was barely covered by the sheets.“What do you want?” I murmured, stretching my hands over my head lazily. She quickly averted her gaze, setting the basin down on a nearby table. “General Kael tended to you this morning,” she said. “He cleaned your wounds and ensured you were comfortable before leaving.”My lips
KAEL’S POVI could feel the light of dawn seeping through the curtains, casting a golden glow across the princess's chambers. I stirred awake, my body still warm from the lingering heat of the Isabelle sprawled beside me.I looked down at Isabelle, lying asleep against me, her dark lashes resting against her cheeks, and her breathing slow and even. Something tightened in my chest from the sight of her, so calm and vulnerable in her sleep. For a moment, I just watched her, memorizing every detail and feature of her face. The way her lips were slightly parted, the gentle rise and fall of her chest, the faint bruises along her collarbone. I reached out without thinking, my fingers trailing over her skin, before pulling back. I carefully pulled the blanket up, making sure she was well covered.I wanted to stay. But I couldn't.I quietly slipped out of bed, slowly shrugged my clothes back on and cast one last glance at Isabelle before I left.Once I was fully dressed, I slipped through th
ISABELLE’S POVThe warm steam hung in the air, wrapping me in heat as I leaned against the edge of the bath. Kael stood across from me, his body stiff and his shoulders tense as if he wanted to run away at any moment. I smirked at his obvious discomfort, finding his hesitation cute."You look like you're preparing for battle, General." I teased, lazily running my fingers across the water.Kael let out a sharp breath. "I don't think we should be doing this, princess." He whispered I raised an eyebrow, my eyes shining with amusement. "And yet, here you are."He hesitated for a moment then he shook his head with a defeated chuckle. "You’re relentless.""I would prefer you use the term determined."He laughed his chest rumbling with the low sound and I used the moment to move closer to him, As I closed the distance between us, Kael tensed slightly but still, he didn't pull away. I suddenly turned around, slowly prying the straps of my dress over my shoulder. He let out a gasp, but coul
ISABELLE’S POVThe air between us was heavy with tension as I stood over Axel with a sly smile. “You need to start talking right now,” I muttered. He looked up at me, his body shaking with rage. I could see he desperately wanted to hurt me, raising his hands towards me with force but the chains held him back. His face was pale from blood loss, but his eyes were locked on mine, flashing with warning and danger.“You think you can endure this, don’t you?” I murmured, “you really think I would let you die so easily and escape your punishment for your crimes?”“There's nothing you can do to make you tell you anything.” He snarled.I chuckled, a low sound that echoed through the room. “You are telling me everything you know.” I was warned. He smirked, but I could see his eyes falter when I pulled out the same poisoned arrow he fired and tried to use to assassinate me.The tip was still stained with Rowan's blood and I didn't bother to clean it. I want him to suffer his same crimes.I trail
ISABELLE'S POV I leaned in, as I heard Rowan’s weak voice calling my name, my brow furrowed, not sure if I had heard him. His mouth moved again, forming my name faintly on his lips, and for a moment, my heart fluttered in my chest.I stared at him, his dark hair falling over his face and his eyes still shut tight. And for a second, I let my heart wander, my heart fluttering. But I couldn’t let my mind go far, so I quickly pushed the thought aside. ‘Don’t be ridiculous, Isabelle. He’s delirious from the fever.’ My wolf murmured.Rowan’s breathing became steady as he slipped back into unconsciousness, but I remained at his bedside for a moment longer, my expression calm. I let out a deep breath, brushing off the strange emotions stirring inside my chest. The sound of footsteps broke the silence in the room. I turned around to see Kael entering the room, his eyes looked tired but he walked in with his usual confidence.“You’ve been by his bedside the whole time,” Kael teased, his lip
MARCELLO’S POVI stayed hidden in the shadows, my eyes sharp as I watched the chaos near the city gate. The guards all stood around the princess, their weapons drawn and ready to attack. From this distance, I couldn't hear what they were saying but it was obvious what was happening. Axel’s desperate suicide attempt had been stopped, his dagger pushed out of his hands by General Kael. The guards moved swiftly, holding Axel to the ground, and the sound of his bones breaking under their force made me in pain.I watched Axel writhe in pain, his body lying lifeless on the ground. For a moment, I pushed forward to save Axel and get him out of this mess. Even though I didn't agree with his plan to kill the princess, he was still a valuable ally in our mission in the Knightfall pack. But I paused in my steps, I knew it would be almost impossible to get him out. Kael and their soldiers surrounded Axel, leaving no room for escape. To act now would be very foolish, and I wasn't ready to throw
AXEL’S POVThe tension in my chest tightened as I crouched watching over the city gate. I narrowed my eyes as I watched General Kael as he approached the princess’s carriage. Even from this distance, I could see the way Kael’s shoulders relaxed in the princess's presence. My face settled into a deep scowl as the general that conquered the Shallow Land pack army shuddered as the princess took his hand. From the angle, I could see his expression melt when she took a step closer. The fearless warrior who had led NightFall forces to crush mine, wrapped around her finger. How could a man who was so strong and decisive bow so easily to the spoilt and proud princess? My gaze darkened as I returned my focus to the princess. She held Kael's hands to her lips and kissed them.My breath hitched as she pulled her hair away from her face and I could finally see her side profile. I didn't notice it at first, but now I am certain. Her straight posture, the way she carried herself— she acted just li
AXEL'S POVI crouched low on the rooftop, the cold stone pressing painfully against my knees. The cool morning wind bit into my skin, but I stayed frozen in position.Chills crawled into my skin but I shook my head. I can't leave this position after I have been waiting for her for so long. From this distance, I could see the city gate and the road leading out of the pack's borders. I adjusted my position, making sure my bow and poisoned arrow were steady.Through one eye, I spotted the princess's carriage, the woman I spent days tracking finally in front of me. She slowly stepped out, and stood near her car, speaking to a man. Even though I couldn't see her face from this angle, it was obvious who she was from the extravagant dress and the maids standing all around her.Her golden hair flowed down her back, covering the side of her face. I adjusted again till the tip of my arrow was aligned perfectly with her form.“This is it,” I muttered under my breath, my heart racing as I shook
AXEL'S POVI rushed through the club still pulsing with anger. Marcello was on my heels following me around.“Axel, you need to drop your plan for revenge, you can't kill the princess.” He ordered.I clenched my jaw, facing away from him. “Okay!” I spat out. I could see him falter at my admittance, narrowing his eyes. “I just need to get my bow and arrow.” I continued. He watched as I took the weapon and left the room. The cold night air bit at my face as I burst out of the club's back door. The princess was not going to get away with this so easily, no matter what Marcello said I was going ahead with my plan.I stood concealed among the trees near the princess's villa. I adjusted the hood of my cloak, settling down and adjusting my weapon.Marcello’s refusal to kill the princess only made me more angry, but I wasn’t one to give up easily. I didn't need any help, I can do this all by my side.My hand tightened around the quiver slung over my back, my mind was entirely focused on my mi
