Aurora's pov

“You are five minutes late, Miss Light.”

When I first got the job as the Secretary to one of the biggest Ceos in the country, it often crossed my mind why anyone would dip out and quit in the first place.

The pay was great and it even included insurance, off-days, paid vacations and such.

Most importantly I could pay for my Grandma's mountain high hospital bills without breaking a sweat.

Why would anyone with two functioning brain cells even dream of leaving such a job?

Well on my second day on the job, exactly 5 minutes in I understood.

“Didn't you hear me, Mrs Light? You're late,” He repeated himself, crossing his legs as he swung from side to side on his cushion swivel chair looking down at me like a king on his throne looking at a mere peasant.

“There was traffic,” I said, hoping that that would wager enough of an explanation but he looked far from satisfied.

I don't know why he was so upset when he was the one that had lodged me in a hotel on the other side of the city away from the company grounds. He said it was to avoid being so special and dove no deeper into giving me a proper explanation.

“You seem ready and armed with excuses so what's the one for your dressing?”

I gave my outfit once over and then looked back at him, “What's wrong with the way I dress?”

“Wrong question, Miss Light. What you should be asking me is what is not wrong with the way you dress…” he got up and stalked over to me.

“If I saw you on the street I would find it easier to swallow that you were heading over for your morning shift as a waitress and not my secretary,” he stated bluntly without hesitation.

I looked at my outfit again, this time incredibly self-conscious it was as if I was saying it for the first time.

The fabric that had grown pale after several laundry days, a couple of loose threads poking out and just the general dreary look both my v-neck and skirt carried.

“My wife is so generous and kind,” I remember how Zayne would say before he affectionately peppered my face with kisses every time I showered him with expensive clothes, shoes and accessories while most of my wardrobe consisted of the same clothes I wore in college.

“I don't want this to be a reoccurring discussion, Miss Light, so please make sure you do better,” Mr Quin said, jolting me back to reality again.

“Mr Quin…” the words I want to say hung in my throat, but I encouraged myself to force them out.

“... these are my best clothes, really don't have anything else more impressive in my wardrobe,”

The look he gave me made me wish that the earth would just open up and swallow me.

“Do you mean you're comfortable being dressed like this?” He said every syllable coated in thick displeasure. “You do know that we will eventually be going out in public together right, are you trying to embarrass me?”

“No,” I admitted, “... I've always been a little tight on the money, so I couldn't splurge on things like clothes when I needed to buy groceries,”

I half expected him to laugh in my face, but he just wore an unreadable expression and sighed.

“Don't worry, we'll deal with that later,” he said dismissively, sweeping under the rug.

“Now back to the issue of your tardiness, a reasonable amount of your salary will be deducted every time you come late,”

My jaw fell.

“What?” I blurted out.

“I'm sure you heard me perfectly well, Miss Light, I'm your boss and it's not a good look if I arrive at the office before you, my secretary, does as well,”

“But today wasn't my fault, the traffic–”

“Then wake up earlier then you did today to beat the traffic, it's a simple as that,”

“Good, and one more thing I only drink coffee from one shop in the entire city called Five Clover, I'll excuse you for today but from tomorrow I'll expect you to arrive with my usual in hand,”

“Which is?”I asked, he seemed to have spoken out of habit and retraced his words quickly.

“Black coffee with lots of sugar and cream,” he said.

“I'm surprised that I have to explain this to you, haven't you already spoken with Simone?”

“He was mostly explaining important things to me; like the company policies and–”

“So you're saying that my early morning dose of coffee isn't important?”

I couldn't tell if he was joking or being serious, either way I still gave him an answer.

“I don't think it was as important as knowing how to do my job,” I said feeling a little offended.

“That is part of your job, you know what's never mind we could dwell on this forever. What's on my schedule today?”

I pulled out my notepad from my bag and immediately got a disapproving stare, but he didn't say anything so I just carried on.

He had a sort of disinterested look on his face as I ran through his schedule. That was until I mentioned his 12:00 meeting that had been requested by the next of kin of one of the major shareholders who recently passed away.

He introduced herself as the shareholder's son and said that he was eager to meet with Mr Quin to discuss pertaining to the shares that had been granted to him in his mother's Will.

“I can't believe you arranged a meeting for me with that man,”

He said with such unveiled disgust that I wondered what Mr Gregor–the man in question–had done to deserve his spite.

“If you don't want to go, then I can just simply cancel the meeting…”

“It's already too late, if I cancel it now it will come off as unprofessional,” He moaned.

“My intention was to avoid any encounter with him for as long as possible, but thanks to you that option is out the window,”He sighed.

I gulped wondering, just what kind of man was Mr Gregor to get this kind of reaction from him?

Aurora's pov I met up with Simone again for lunch in the company cafeteria and asked him about Mr Gregor. His face immediately paled when I mentioned that name and he nearly choked on his food. “Ugh! This is my fault Aurora, I should have given you a heads up or something, it completely slipped my mind,” he said apologetically. He leaned closer and whispered in my ear.“Well? How did the boss react?” “He was very unreasonable, if I'm going to be honest…shooting me dirty glares whenever he thinks I'm not looking,” He looked at me with wide eyes and then placed his hand on my shoulder. “Don't worry, you can confide in me. What did he really do?” I was at a loss for words, “exactly what I just said,” I reaffirmed, “... that's not all, today I clocked in only 5 minutes late and he was already giving me an earful about it,” “You came late?” his eyes were like saucepans now. “Yes,” I admitted, a little bit of shame trickling into my voice. “It's not like that was my int

Then his beady eyes shifted over to me and my eyes were once again assaulted with the glint that came from his golden tooth as he smiled. “I never would have guessed over the phone how pretty your new secretary is,” I felt like recoiling into a hole when I got that compliment, it was the lecherous look that he barely veiled beneath his eyes that made my skin really crawl. “I thought you came to discuss business with me, Mr Gregor, not flirt with my secretary,” Mr Quin came at him sharply, Mr Gregor mumbled an apology awkwardly. “Mr Quin, it was only a harmless joke, but I apologize nevertheless.” he said in a tone that made it clear he just wanted to brush the matter under the carpet rather than actually feeling remorseful. Mr Gregor bounced from one pointless topic to the other, straying quickly without pause. I wa

I scolded myself internally, if a man that I had cherished and adored for years could easily betray me for my sister then why was I surprised that Mr Xander who was more of a stranger to me than not would do the same–choosing another woman over me. It stung, it was like reopening a wound that had not fully healed and revisiting that numbing pain of betrayal. Well, this only means that I will have to show him just how great of a secretary I could be. If I proved to be invaluable to him then he wouldn't need to replace me even if he got involved with another woman. Aurora’s pov “Zayne, I want a divorce.” My eyes were stung with tears as those words slipped past my trembling lips across to my husband who wore a nonchalant and distant expression as he replied, “Fine, let's end this sham of a marriage!” I felt my heart drop, how did we get here? I met Zayne at a freshman party in college. That night I was standing awkwardly with a half field plastic cup blending into the background like a wallflower when he approached me. He was undoubtedly one of the hottest guys in my department, talking to me–a mere nobody so I couldn't help it falling for him, and when he got down on one knee to propose to me on our graduation with a bouquet of white roses in hand I throw my arms around his neck and yelled, “Yes!” His eagerness to meet my family was the only thing that allowed me to voluntarily introduce him to my parents and my younger sister Amy. So far he had only met my grandmother, and he was pleased to meet the rest of my fa

Aurora's POV I didn't see Zayn again until it was time to sign the divorce papers, my lawyer handled all the proceedings up to that point. That morning I manipulated my hair into a messy bun, lazy bun then donned the first thing I picked out with my wardrobe. To hide my dark circles and paleness, I dabbed a thick layer of foundation over my face. Stepping in front of the mirror I realized that the horrible mess in front of me was the best I had looked in months, and I wasn't about to get greedy. I drove my old sedan to a law firm, it coughed all the way there. “You finally made it,” Zayne sneered at me sarcastically, we hadn't seen each other in months and the first thing he did was throw a nasty remark. “There was traffic,” I lied, trying to avoid a fight. I'd fought for our relationship for years, and where did that ever get me? Now I had lost him to my sister. I sat down next to my lawyer, she handed me my own copy of the divorce paper and asked me to go thro

  • The Ex-wife Revenge    CHAPTER THREE

Aurora's POV I packed my few salvageable valuables from the ground before the rain started to pour. My eyes rested heavily on the house I'd called home for years. Now my ex-husband was cozying up with another woman. Slowly, my fingers tightened around the steering wheel as I reversed my car from the garage and drove off to another place I used to call home. Father and mother weren't expecting to see me, and so late in the night too. I usually kept my visits to their place on the minimum. There did little to hide their displeasure over my unplanned visit . They gave me a cold reception, and were questioning me before I could even sit down were already interrogating me. “Why did you come here like this? and why didn't you tell us you were coming?” Father said coldly. “Do I need to book appointment to see my own parents?” They both exchanged looks with each other and It was my mother that replied. “You must not read so deeply into everything, it was a simp

Aurora's POV Having no way else to go I strolled around aimlessly, until I ended up in front of a bar. Most of my savings have been under the joint account I shared with Zayne, but all of that was now under his sole ownership and I couldn't withdraw from it anymore. “What the heck?” I said out loud stepping into the bar, “it's not like I got anything else to lose,” Five minutes later, I had already down two bottles of alcohol and was ordering more. Normally I was more frugal with my money, but just for tonight I decided not to care. Tomorrow I will go back to be an underpaid lower class member of society. So I basically loitered around for a while, strolling endlessly apart from the thoughts of Mr Quin’s offer until it was time to see Mr Brooks. I had already described what I was wearing and he spotted me first and called out my name. “Miss Light!” He was rather chipper and wore a friendly demeanor. I walked over to him ignoring the eyes that had strolled towards my direction due to his loud call and I settled down in a chair next to his own. “Looks like I got replaced fast,” he said with no Ill intent in his voice. “I hope there are no hard feelings, I REALLY needed this job,” I said and he smiled at me kindly blissfully unaware of the desperation I was under. “It's okay if anything I should be the one apologizing to you…” he dropped that awf

" it has to be mutually beneficial to the two of us so I'll make any necessary changes that won't affect my own needs,” I bit my bottom lip contemplatively, then I slammed the piece of paper back on the table before running my eyes over it, by the time I made it to the last word I took a deep breath. “You really thought this through…” I commented a little absent mindedly. “Well of course I did, my family has been on my back for a while to get married.
