Aurora's POV

“Now I know that you are just messing with me…this?…” I lifted the contract and faced him with an unamused expression on my face.

“Just what do you take me for? You know I'm desperate right now and you are pulling my leg like this,”

“I'm not pulling your leg,” he said firmly, then he gently massaged his temples, squinting his eyes shut.

“I'm being 100% serious right now so I'll need you to go through the contract."

" it has to be mutually beneficial to the two of us so I'll make any necessary changes that won't affect my own needs,”

I bit my bottom lip contemplatively, then I slammed the piece of paper back on the table before running my eyes over it, by the time I made it to the last word I took a deep breath.

“You really thought this through…” I commented a little absent mindedly.

“Well of course I did, my family has been on my back for a while to get married. I can hardly take a breath all I want is just somebody to play that role long enough for them to leave me alone for the time being,”

Now that I realized he wasn't joking, the reality hit me like a collapsing building.

“But why me?”

I couldn't help but ask, the man across from me could have any other woman he wanted with his looks and loaded pocket that was hardly a problem.

So why did he pick me?

“It's because you left,”

He said, and I stared at him, my confusion only deepening.

“You left without looking back, any other woman I've been with would be on their knees begging for my love right now. They would have even leaped at the opportunity without asking a question, yet you hesitate.”

As he spoke, his words reminded me of a certain clause I had seen in the contract.

I slid my finger over the text and read it aloud.

“The moment Miss Aurora Light begins to develop any sort of romantic feelings, she is to refund every expenditure or payments made for her sake back to Mr Xander Quin…”

I could feel my irritation beginning to build over my anxiety.

“Shouldn't this work for both parties? Either of us could develop feelings–”

“Ha!” the billionaire in front of me exclaimed before he broke into fits of laughter by the time he was finally done and straightening up his back he wiped away a teard from the corner of his eye.

“Was it that funny?” I asked my pride and ego bruised by his endless laughter.

“Actually it was,” he said, standing up suddenly and in the blink of an eye his lean, yet muscular frame was right next to me.

His eyes held me with an intensity that made my throat dry and then he took his fingers and brushed through my hair pulling up the strands and letting it fall without ever allowing eye contact between the two of us to stop for even a second.

“So you were saying?” He said the mockery evident in his voice.

I scoffed, finally finding my voice again and I stood up with such abruptness that it almost sent the chair behind me flying to the ground.

“What I was saying Mr Quin…” I began my voice was loud and confident even though I had to tilt my head high up to look at him eye to eye.

“... Is that this clause only benefits you, and it also undermines my professionalism saying that I'll be the only one who would be the only one to catch feelings, and for an egotistical jerk like you too!”

“So you think that you can make me fall for you?” He said, sounding more amused than annoyed and his face was so close now that his minty breath brushed my cheek.

My heart skipped a beat, but I didn't allow my inner turmoil to express itself in my facial features, instead I hardened them and responded in a monotone voice.

“Well if our last encounter proved anything it was that at the very least you find me physically attractive so I think we should change this, at least tweak it…”

“I'm listening,”

He came too close and I had to take a step back a wicked chuckle left his lips and grinding my teeth in frustration, yet I still suggested my own change: if he was the one to develope feelings first, then he would pay me double the promised amount in the contract, and I wouldn't have to be his lover anymore.

“That's fair, I'll try my best not to fall for you Miss light,” he said, the mocking tone in his voice thickening as he went back to his seat.

“I'll give you the rest of the day to look through the contract and see if there are any more changes you would like, but you should know that once you sign it, there is no going back,” his voice suddenly became cold.

“I don't take kindly to people who go back on their word“

I gulped, his words almost sounded like a threat.

“I'll go through it, is there anything else you need me to do?”

He took a pen and wrote down his previous secretary's number, handing over the slip of paper to me.

“This is Simon Brooks number , my former secretary. You will have to contact him to meet with you here in the office. He'll brief you on your responsibilities before you fully take over his position,”

“Didn't he quit?” I asked.

“He got a promotion,” Mr Quin said with no other explanation. Then he stood up straightening up his attire and running his fingers through his hair as he picked up his phone from his desk.

“I already have your number from your documents so I'll call you if there is a need,”

“Okay, Sir, do you have a meeting now?”

He nodded in affirmation.

“Yes, but it's an unofficial one outside the office it doesn't concern you so it's not important,”

He said it wasn't important but he rushed out of the office without sparing me another glance and I couldn't help but think tentatively.

I couldn't help but wonder... if there was someone else?

It's strictly business, you understand?” I nodded, “Yes, Mr Quin,” I said, slipping into his car. Goosebumps brushed my skin as I felt the air conditioner blowing a cool breeze that tickled my skin. He got behind the wheels, and I was suddenly self conscious. “Are we leaving yet, Mr Quin?” I asked, looking at him but intentionally avoiding his eyes. “That's another thing,” he said snappily as he inserted the key into the ignition hole. “Call me Xander outside the office, nobody is going to believe this is a real relationship if you refer to me like that,” he pointed out. “Okay, Mr Qui-I mean…Xander,” The engine came to life with a slow gurrotal roar and he glanced at me patiently. “You'll get used to it,” He paus

Aurora's pov “You are five minutes late, Miss Light.” When I first got the job as the Secretary to one of the biggest Ceos in the country, it often crossed my mind why anyone would dip out and quit in the first place. The pay was great and it even included insurance, off-days, paid vacations and such. Most importantly I could pay for my Grandma's mountain high hospital bills without breaking a sweat. Why would anyone with two functioning brain cells even dream of leaving such a job? Well on my second day on the job, exactly 5 minutes in I understood. “Didn't you hear me, Mrs Light? You're late,” He repeated himself, crossing his legs as he swung from side to side on his cushion swivel chair looking down at me like a king on his throne looking at a mere peasant. “There was traffic,” I said, hoping that that would wager enough of an explanation but he looked far from satisfied. I don't know why he was so upset when he was the one that had lodged me in a hotel on the oth

His face immediately paled when I mentioned that name and he nearly choked on his food. “Ugh! This is my fault Aurora, I should have given you a heads up or something, it completely slipped my mind,” he said apologetically. He leaned closer and whispered in my ear.“Well? How did the boss react?” “He was very unreasonable, if I'm going to be honest…shooting me dirty glares whenever he thinks I'm not looking,” He looked at me with wide eyes and then placed his hand on my shoulder. “Don't worry, you can confide in me. What did he really do?” I was at a loss for words, “exactly what I just said,” I reaffirmed, “... that's not all, today I clocked in only 5 minutes late and he was already giving me an earful about it,” “You came late?” his eyes were like saucepans now. “Yes,” I admitted, a little bit of shame trickling into my voice. “It's not like that was my int

Aurora's POV I should have seen this coming, it was my fault for being so naive so I had no one else to blame but myself. My feet managed to take me out of the office before the tears started streaming down, I entered my own office wiping it all off at the back of my hand. Get yourself together, Aurora. I scolded myself internally, if a man that I had cherished and adored for years could easily betray me for my sister then why was I surprised that Mr Xander who was more of a stranger to me than not would do the same–choosing another woman over me. It stung, it was like reopening a wound that had not fully healed and revisiting that numbing pain of betrayal. Well, this only means that I will have to show him just how great of a secretary I could be. If I proved to be invaluable to him then he wouldn't need to replace me even if he got involved with another woman. Aurora’s pov “Zayne, I want a divorce.” My eyes were stung with tears as those words slipped past my trembling lips across to my husband who wore a nonchalant and distant expression as he replied, “Fine, let's end this sham of a marriage!” I felt my heart drop, how did we get here? I met Zayne at a freshman party in college. That night I was standing awkwardly with a half field plastic cup blending into the background like a wallflower when he approached me. He was undoubtedly one of the hottest guys in my department, talking to me–a mere nobody so I couldn't help it falling for him, and when he got down on one knee to propose to me on our graduation with a bouquet of white roses in hand I throw my arms around his neck and yelled, “Yes!” His eagerness to meet my family was the only thing that allowed me to voluntarily introduce him to my parents and my younger sister Amy. So far he had only met my grandmother, and he was pleased to meet the rest of my fa

Aurora's POV I didn't see Zayn again until it was time to sign the divorce papers, my lawyer handled all the proceedings up to that point. That morning I manipulated my hair into a messy bun, lazy bun then donned the first thing I picked out with my wardrobe. To hide my dark circles and paleness, I dabbed a thick layer of foundation over my face. Stepping in front of the mirror I realized that the horrible mess in front of me was the best I had looked in months, and I wasn't about to get greedy. I drove my old sedan to a law firm, it coughed all the way there. “You finally made it,” Zayne sneered at me sarcastically, we hadn't seen each other in months and the first thing he did was throw a nasty remark. “There was traffic,” I lied, trying to avoid a fight. I'd fought for our relationship for years, and where did that ever get me? Now I had lost him to my sister. I sat down next to my lawyer, she handed me my own copy of the divorce paper and asked me to go thro

Xanders pov I had never gotten hung up on one night stand before, and could hardly even remember their faces the very next day. But there was something about this woman that made her linger in my mind. Then I saw her again, well her passport clipped along to her credentials. There was no mistaking it was her. I scanned through and found her name. “Aurora light,” her name slid off my tongue. I looked through her credentials, the only thing that stock out was the insane amount of recommendation letters she had listed with the places she worked, but most of them were menial responsibilities. She didn't have one single proper office job. Well until now. I wanted to see her again, and maybe figure out why she couldn't leave my mind. So I gave her the job, and she showed up the very next day. While she looked polished and professional enough, I quickly noticed that her skirt suit was a Frankenstein monster, each piece coming from different sources. I put that i

Aurora's POV Having no way else to go I strolled around aimlessly, until I ended up in front of a bar. Most of my savings have been under the joint account I shared with Zayne, but all of that was now under his sole ownership and I couldn't withdraw from it anymore. “What the heck?” I said out loud stepping into the bar, “it's not like I got anything else to lose,” Five minutes later, I had already down two bottles of alcohol and was ordering more. Normally I was more frugal with my money, but just for tonight I decided not to care. Tomorrow I will go back to be an underpaid lower class member of society. But tonight…tonight I was going to have fun. Brimming with liquid courage, I became rather full of myself, flirting with strangers and even accepting dances. There was one guy that came twice, I guess the bad lighting in the bar was making me look less unattractive. “May I have this dance?” He was drunk too, yet like myself he kept his wits about
