Chapter Forty

The Frozen Wastes extended out before Ethan and Selene, an perpetual land of ice and snow that appeared to swallow all light and warmth. The gnawing wind yelled through the fruitless scene, carrying with it a cold so strongly that it felt like it could solidify the soul itself. Each step they took crunched against the frozen ground, resounding through the endless vacancy.

Ethan pulled his cloak more tightly around him, the cold leaking through the thickest layers of his clothing. Close to him, Selene shuddered in spite of her claim endeavors to keep warm. The bone chilling air was persistent, and as they wandered into the Wastes, the more it felt just like the cold was alive, squeezing in on them from all sides.

“This place… it's just like the world has been drained of all life,” Selene murmured, her breath unmistakable within the frosty air.
