Chapter 1: Murder and chains

last update Last Updated: 2024-11-26 04:11:17

The dining room was alive with laughter, the clinking of plates, and the faint melody of my mother humming as she set down another dish. The table was laid out perfectly, just like she always did, even for small family dinners. Except this one wasn’t a small family dinner, It was my birthday.

“Nineteen,” my father said, his deep voice with a mix of pride as he poured himself a glass of wine. “Hard to believe you’re not a pup anymore.”

“I haven’t been a pup for years, dad,” I replied, grinning at him as I reached for another slice of cake.

“You’ll always be my pup,” he said, ruffling my hair before taking a seat at the head of the table.

I rolled my eyes at him, stuffing my face with cake.

Beside me, my brother, Damon stuffed his face with a cinnamon roll, ignoring the amused look my mother shot him. “If you’re going to eat like that,” my mother teased, “you might as well shift into your wolf. At least then you’d have an excuse.”

Damon swallowed with a grin “The food’s too good, mum. The whole pack is missing out on this, maybe you should run the big kitchen for the whole pack.”

My mother laughed softly, shaking her head. “Not a chance. This is just for us.” Her smile widened.

My dad, Alpha Asher, chuckled. This was my family. My dad was the Alpha of our pack, red claws pack. My mum, she was Luna. My thirteen year old annoying younger brother, Damon.

And I, Mima, next in line to my father. I was so happy that I was finally 19. Zahra, my best friend and I would talk about meeting my mate for hours when she had sleepovers. Zahra had already found hers months ago after her birthday and I was ecstatic and eager to find mine.

My dad was about to reach for the bottle of wine again when the smile on his face died out. “I can't feel them…” my dad murmured.

“Sorry? Dear, what did you say?” My mum asked as she put her hands on his shoulder.

“I can't feel some of our members' bond. It's like… it's like they're dying out one by one.” He said a little louder.

In haste my father stood up and went to the home phone, dialing his Beta and best friend, Beta Jaxon.

My mum walked towards my brother and I and put her hands on our shoulders trying to comfort us.

“Jaxon, can you figure out what is going on in the pack? I seem to be losing contact with our members' ” my dad said into the phone.

‘okay Alpha, I will do that right now but do wish your daugh— Arghh” Beta Jaxon's sound of cry terrified my father. The line went dead after that.

My father was shook and decided to go out on his own to figure out what was going on.

“Elara, stay with the kids. Something is wrong somewhere” my dad walked towards the door carrying his sword. He had opened the door by a slit when a spear tore through his chest, protruded from his back and he fell backwards to the ground, his eyes open as life left his body.

I heard a scream but I couldn't focus on whose it was, all I could see was my father's lifeless body on the floor.

I couldn't stop staring.

My mum immediately recovered herself and pushed my brother and I upstairs to go and hide.

“No mum, I'm not leaving you here” my brother, Damon cried as my mum tried to convince him.

“You can and you will, Damon. Protect your sister. I love you both… very much” my mum said before walking towards the door and trying to distract the intruder.

I tugged on my brother's hands and dragged him up the stairs into our store room. We barely used it so it was the last place they would check right?!

We both hid in a large cupboard and had our hands over our mouths, silently crying.

I heard a scream of agonyreverberate through the whole building and I knew whose it was… my mother. I held back another round of tears and held my brother close.

The house went quiet.

I was starting to think they had left when the cupboard door opened and a masked man came into view. His spear in his right hand dripped with blood. He tried to stab my brother but Damon was quick to tackle him. For some reason, I knew it was a bad idea.

Damon was able to get the spear off the guy's hand but the intruder held Damon by his neck and squeezed hard. Damon began to gasp for air, I couldn't take it anymore. I got up and tried to save him.

I tried pushing, biting, kicking the killer, but his focus was on my brother.

I turned to get the spear but before I could, I heard a cracking sound. I turned to face the killer only to see my brother's lifeless body on the floor staring at the ceiling.

He was gone.

He killed my brother.

I crumpled to the floor and held my brother's body close. “Kill me too” I whispered.

All the masked man did was shake his head and drag me out of the building. When we got outside my house, I realised that the whole pack was in disarray. The floors were littered with bodies and houses were set ablaze. I gasped.

Ahead, where the masked man dragged me to, I saw some of my pack mates… including my best friend, chained and In a long line. I was roughly tossed and cuffed with them.

We, the captured people were thrown into the back of a vehicle. The vehicle drove away as I stared at my burning house and fallen pack.

That was the end of the red claws pack, my pack.

“ Happy birthday to me” I muttered under my breath as more tears streamed down my face.

The dungeon was suffocating, a dark lightless pit that reeked of decay, despair and rotting flesh. Bodies littered the cramped cells, slumped against the cold stone walls. The other members of my pack were packed into one cell. I was alone in another. I looked across the hall and spotted my best friend. Her head was resting on the wall. Her once striking brown eyes were dull, rimmed with red from several hours of crying. She had lost her mate in the attack. She must be really hurt. She hadn't spoken since we were thrown into this hellhole. No one had. All we had witnessed was too great for words. My stomach churned from starvation and and my wrist felt raw from the silver laced iron chains that chained me to the wall. I closed my eyes letting the silence of the cell fill my ears but all I saw were my family's dead bodies. The sound of my mother's screams, the look in my brother's eyes and the sound of the snap of his neck. I pressed my hands on my face trying to block the images and

Zahra, stood up watching the exchange between us. “You… you are my mate.” He whispered. He seemed mesmerised by me being there. He stretched out his hand and stroked my cheek. I leaned in to his touch. The whole clearing was silent and nobody made a sound.I felt I had gotten something good when all of a sudden, he retracted his had like he had been burnt by my skin.“You, you cannot be my mate” his face twisted in disgust. What?“You are a slave, I cannot be matted to a slave and a conquered pack. I am an Alpha, I deserve better than a weakling” he sneered.“Al-pha?” I said in confusion. He is the alpha of this pack? The pack that raided and destroyed my home? The pack that killed and is killing the last of my people? This pack?I stumbled back unable to form words.“This is unacceptable. I, Dylan, Alpha of the Blood stone pack, reject you, Mima as m

I walked out of the bathroom and into the room, draping the towel I found over my body. The food on the bedside table had gone cold but I had no choice but to shove it down my throat. If I was going to survive here, I needed all the energy I could get. I couldn't stop thinking about my family and their deaths again. I knelt by my bed as I decided to pray to the moon goddess for their souls and that they rest in peace. I was just about to start my prayers when my room door burst open and an angry Luna stormed in. “Well, well, well. Look at a little miss seductive ex-mate praying to the goddess.” She scorned.I didn't understand what I must have done to get her angry. Before I could open my mouth to talk, she grabbed me by the ponytail I had thrown my hair into and pulled me backwards. My scalp stung from the pull.“You bitch, you think you can take my mate away from me. I, Stephanie, future Luna of this pack would never allow that” Stephanie, so that's her name and what is she goin

I promised myself not to cry in front of all these people. I held it in and turned to him.“Respectfully Alpha, you were the one that touched me inappropriately, leading to me being startled. I didn't intentionally want to soil your expensive clothes.”He stared at me, shocked that I exposed him. “I— I did no such thing. What do you mean by touching you inappropriately? You… you are making up baseless accusations with zero to no evidence that I did that” I stumbled over his words trying to clear his name. He looked over at the other guests, trying to garner their favour but knowing who he really was, none of them stood up to defend him. But Stephanie spoke up.“I believe you, Alpha Rodrick. I mean, why would a reputable man like you want to touch filthy trash like her? She must be lying, giving an excuse for how she acted. She is such a silly fool.” She walked towards us and I couldn't help but cower in fear as she got closer.“I will make sure to teach her a lesson after our meal”

The metallic tang of blood filled my nostrils as I woke to the faintest light filtering through the cracks in the walls. My body screamed in protest as I tried to move, every muscle burning like fire. The dried blood and sweat glued my torn clothes to my skin, making every small shift unbearable.A soft scuffling sound caught my attention. At first, I thought it was rats, but then I noticed a shadow moving along the wall close to the door. I hadn't heard anybody come in. Someone was here. My heart thudded in my chest, fear and desperation flooded my chest. Where they are here to beat me up again. "Who's there?" My voice came out hoarse and small, barely above a whisper. The shadow hesitated before stepping closer. It was Julia, the head maid. Her face was pale, her eyes darting nervously to the door as she knelt beside me. She carried a small bag, her hands trembling as she rummaged through it."Shh," she whispered, pulling out a damp cloth. "I don’t have long. They’ll notice if I’m

The guards threw Julia at my side. “So this was why you were confident enough to not break yet, huh. This little wrench has been helping you.” One of the guards stepped forward, his boots scraping against the concrete floor, and drove his foot into Julia's side. She crumpled with a muffled groan, clutching her stomach. I lunged forward instinctively, but the heavy chains held me in place."Leave her alone!" I snarled, but my voice cracked, making my weakness obvious. The guard sneered, leaning closer and spat on her face. Before he could strike again, the door burst open with a force that echoed through the room. Every head turned. Standing in the doorway was him, Dylan, my former mate.“What the fuck is going on here?” He asked with fury in his eyes. If he could breathe fire, there would be steam coming out of his nose and ears. He was angry. Stephanie, noticing his presence, had gone as docile as a dove, itching her head as if she knew nothing. “Um… you see… I was just punis

Mima's POV I woke up with a start as I stood up from the bed. There was a beeping sound in the room and the walls and ceilings were white. I was confused about where I was but after looking down and seeing the numerous tubes attached to me, I remember that I was in the pack clinic.I had sweat gathered on my forehead from the nightmare I had. Seeing my brother die all over again. A tear slipped from my left eye and I raised my bandages hand to clean it. I looked down at myself and noticed that my clothes had been changed. My wounds were bandaged. Basically all of me was covered in bandages. Any small movement I made would make me wince. I was still observing my wounds when someone entered the room. It was a small lady in a white nurse gown. She must be here to check my health. She held a clipboard in her hand and asked how I was doing, giving me a small smile that didn't reach her eyes. She did all she came to do and left. The door opened seconds later and Julia wheeled herself in.

Mima's POV The door creaked open, I barely had time to wipe my tears from my cheeks when Dylan's tall figure appeared in the doorway, his eyes shone with the same cold and sketchy look it always had. I hated how that look made my skin crawl, but it was the only thing I’d ever known from him.“What are you doing here?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady, it was still a bit shaky from crying. Dylan stepped inside without waiting for an invitation, his boots making a sharp click against the floor. His eyes roamed my body, observing my injuries and lingering for a moment too long before meeting my eyes again. “I came to offer you a deal,” he said, his tone smooth, almost deceptively casual.I frowned, narrowing my eyes. “A deal?”He moved closer, a smirk playing on his lips, as if he was savoring the moment. “Oh poor Mima. I heard all about how Stephanie is treating you. I mean, she must be doing it out of spite that you were my mate. She will continue to torture you as long as you

Mima's POVIt was finally dinner time and the dining hall buzzed with murmurs as I walked towards it. When I stepped in, all eyes turned to me and their noises stopped “Good evening everyone.” Those who were seated were Zahra, Ria and Kian, Beck, Julia who kept fidgeting for some reason, Kia and Daria.“Good evening, Luna.” Beck and Daria replied. Zahra just nodded and Kia kept bouncing in his seat. Ria and Kian made eye contact with me and I nodded to them.Beck did a good job. Their dirty clothes were changed and they were in new attires. Ria kept staring at Kia who's seat was close to mine.I'm glad she's seated far from him for now. She mentioned that killing him will solve it all, even though she has agreed to be an ally, I still don't trust her. She could injure him when I'm not looking. “I have called you all here today to talk about something very important, or two important things that will affect our pack.” They nodded and I took my seat. “Let's have dinner first.” Da

Mima's POV I walked back to the mansion and up to Rake's room, slumping on the bed with my arms spread out wide. My whole body ached and I haven't gotten a moment of rest since I got these powers from the goddess. It more of a blessing and a curse now. I got up and walked over to the bathroom. I stink and when I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror, I looked like those witches from children's fairytales. No wonder everyone was staring at me.I turned the tab of the bathtub open and peeled off my clothes. I gently slid them off me and put my favourite bath bombs in the bath and took a dip. I let out a huge sigh once I was totally in and I closed my eyes.“I need to arrange my thoughts” I said to myself in a low voice. First off, how to help Rake…My mate… we haven't had the chance to spend time together for real since I got here. It's always been one issue or the other. How would I heal him? I need to find a way. My body was tense, muscles tightened, ready to lash out if necessary.I didn't have any more strength, my breath kept coming out in gaps. I didn’t have time for distractions, yet here I was, staring down Kia’s sister and her mate as they stepped hesitantly from their hiding place.I arched a brow at them, unimpressed. “You were following me.”The woman swallowed, her mate stepping slightly in front of her as if to shield her from my irritation. “ We have been following you for a while. You just didn't notice. We saw you take out the shadows,” she admitted. “We want to fight on your side.”I exhaled sharply, narrowing my eyes. “And I’m just supposed to believe that? Rake's POVMy whole body aches as I ran into the halls, freezing in place as I came face to face with the many decorations on the wall. What the hell did I even miss? What is the meaning of all of this? I clung to my injured waist that seemed like the wound was reopening with every step that I took. A maid was passing by and I stopped her. “Excuse me.” She first looked extremely surprised at seeing me and then remembered who she was in front of. She slightly bowed, waiting for me to speak.“What is going on here? Whats with all the decorations?” “It's for the presentation of the Luna before the pack.” She replied and I could feel a vein popping out on my forehead. The what?! “Explain” my voice is hard and as if she could sense my anger, she trembled in fear.“The elders organised it for the Luna to address herself in front of the packs Nd announce herself as your stand in until your doing better.” She trembled some more and I became aware of the fact that my anger was sleeping

I wouldn't let them succeed in whatever foolery that they're trying too pull.I was about to walk over to one of the elders when I spotted a shadow in the corner of my eye that disrupts my course of thinking. It wasn't your fault that they took you put first to put Rake at a disadvantage. More than being angry at you, I'm angry at Rake he didn't reach out to me when he could have.”Rake looked at me suspiciously. “ How would he be able to do that? You both haven't mated yet.” Confusion filled his expression.“That's true, we haven't but Rake gavee this necklace.” I pulled it out from under the neckline of my gown. “He said he would be able to communicate with me through it. He could have told me. I would have brought men to come and help you guys.” Beck nodded in understanding, amused at the necklace and then he smiled a little.
