I walked out of the bathroom and into the room, draping the towel I found over my body. The food on the bedside table had gone cold but I had no choice but to shove it down my throat. If I was going to survive here, I needed all the energy I could get.
I couldn't stop thinking about my family and their deaths again. I knelt by my bed as I decided to pray to the moon goddess for their souls and that they rest in peace.
I was just about to start my prayers when my room door burst open and an angry Luna stormed in.
“Well, well, well. Look at a little miss seductive ex-mate praying to the goddess.” She scorned.
I didn't understand what I must have done to get her angry. Before I could open my mouth to talk, she grabbed me by the ponytail I had thrown my hair into and pulled me backwards. My scalp stung from the pull.
“You bitch, you think you can take my mate away from me. I, Stephanie, future Luna of this pack would never allow that”
Stephanie, so that's her name and what is she going on about?
“I think you are mistaken I—” I felt a slap across my face silencing me. I turned to look at her and she hit me again.
Again and again and again till I fell to the ground. She then went ahead to dig her heel in my stomach. I groaned in pain on the floor.
“Stay away from my mate, you wouldn't take him or my position. You should be dead like your stupid family. I don't know what the fuck you did to make him choose to keep you alive but just know not to cross me, you slut”
She stepped away from me and walked towards the door, not looking back for one second. As she turned the knob of the door and walked out, in the line of my vision, I saw some maids snickering and laughing at me.
I laid on the floor, I couldn't move. I was exhausted, tired and injured.
This is going to be one hell of a ride.It was already dark out by the time I could get up from the floor. I groaned as I stabilized myself by holding on to the bedside. I stumbled to the mirror and saw many cuts and bruises on my face. I could barely recognise myself.
“There must be a first aid kit around here somewhere” I muttered to myself.
I found one in the second drawer of the wardrobe and pulled it out. I hissed and winced as I tended to my wounds, tears slipping out of my eyes in between.
A knock sounded on my door.
“Come in” I rasped out.
“Good evening, the Luna orders that you be part of the serving maids for tonight's dinner. You are to be ready and in the hall in 10 minutes” the head maid said as she watched me intently for my reaction.
“I would be there then” I tried to hide my pain and anguish but I must be doing a bad job because her face softened at me before she walked out leaving me alone.
The hallway to the dining hall was immaculate. They must have really spent a lot of time making this place and attending to every detail. The small swirls on the wall, the curves of the roofs, even down to the colours of paints. The building was really beautiful.
I walked alone to the dining area. The other maids made it pretty clear to stay away from me like I was a disease. They would glance at me and whisper. I didn't care.
I stood at the door of the dining hall, when the head maid pushed a trolly towards me. She signaled for me to take it in, which I did.
All the laughter, shouts and talks died down as I walked in. They must all know who I am.
Seated in the chairs, I could spot some of the leaders of the pack's that were in alliance with my Father. I couldn't hide my face of disgust at their betrayal.
One of them was the leader of a small pack, Alpha Rodrick, who was known for his perverted ways of preying on young girls. He licked his lips when his eyes met mine but I ignored him.
“Come Mima, serve my guests. You should know how to do that much” I bowed at Stephanie’s requests and began to serve the guests. I ignored eye contact with most of them especially, Dylan. I didn't want any more trouble for myself.
I had gotten to Alpha Rodrick’s seat, about to serve him when I felt a hand on my left ass cheek. I was startled and ended up pouring the hot plate of food on him. He jumped out of his seat and yelled in pain at the burn.
“I'm sorry, I didn't mean for that to happen. I didn't —” a slap resounded around the room. I felt my cheek sting and blood in my mouth.
“You useless, ungrateful girl. How dare you spill hot food on my expensive attire that you can never afford, are you crazy? Kneel and apologize to me right now. The whole room was stunned into silence at the scene.I promised myself not to cry in front of all these people. I held it in and turned to him.“Respectfully Alpha, you were the one that touched me inappropriately, leading to me being startled. I didn't intentionally want to soil your expensive clothes.”He stared at me, shocked that I exposed him. “I— I did no such thing. What do you mean by touching you inappropriately? You… you are making up baseless accusations with zero to no evidence that I did that” I stumbled over his words trying to clear his name. He looked over at the other guests, trying to garner their favour but knowing who he really was, none of them stood up to defend him. But Stephanie spoke up.“I believe you, Alpha Rodrick. I mean, why would a reputable man like you want to touch filthy trash like her? She must be lying, giving an excuse for how she acted. She is such a silly fool.” She walked towards us and I couldn't help but cower in fear as she got closer.“I will make sure to teach her a lesson after our meal”
The metallic tang of blood filled my nostrils as I woke to the faintest light filtering through the cracks in the walls. My body screamed in protest as I tried to move, every muscle burning like fire. The dried blood and sweat glued my torn clothes to my skin, making every small shift unbearable.A soft scuffling sound caught my attention. At first, I thought it was rats, but then I noticed a shadow moving along the wall close to the door. I hadn't heard anybody come in. Someone was here. My heart thudded in my chest, fear and desperation flooded my chest. Where they are here to beat me up again. "Who's there?" My voice came out hoarse and small, barely above a whisper. The shadow hesitated before stepping closer. It was Julia, the head maid. Her face was pale, her eyes darting nervously to the door as she knelt beside me. She carried a small bag, her hands trembling as she rummaged through it."Shh," she whispered, pulling out a damp cloth. "I don’t have long. They’ll notice if I’m
The guards threw Julia at my side. “So this was why you were confident enough to not break yet, huh. This little wrench has been helping you.” One of the guards stepped forward, his boots scraping against the concrete floor, and drove his foot into Julia's side. She crumpled with a muffled groan, clutching her stomach. I lunged forward instinctively, but the heavy chains held me in place."Leave her alone!" I snarled, but my voice cracked, making my weakness obvious. The guard sneered, leaning closer and spat on her face. Before he could strike again, the door burst open with a force that echoed through the room. Every head turned. Standing in the doorway was him, Dylan, my former mate.“What the fuck is going on here?” He asked with fury in his eyes. If he could breathe fire, there would be steam coming out of his nose and ears. He was angry. Stephanie, noticing his presence, had gone as docile as a dove, itching her head as if she knew nothing. “Um… you see… I was just punis
Mima's POV I woke up with a start as I stood up from the bed. There was a beeping sound in the room and the walls and ceilings were white. I was confused about where I was but after looking down and seeing the numerous tubes attached to me, I remember that I was in the pack clinic.I had sweat gathered on my forehead from the nightmare I had. Seeing my brother die all over again. A tear slipped from my left eye and I raised my bandages hand to clean it. I looked down at myself and noticed that my clothes had been changed. My wounds were bandaged. Basically all of me was covered in bandages. Any small movement I made would make me wince. I was still observing my wounds when someone entered the room. It was a small lady in a white nurse gown. She must be here to check my health. She held a clipboard in her hand and asked how I was doing, giving me a small smile that didn't reach her eyes. She did all she came to do and left. The door opened seconds later and Julia wheeled herself in.
Mima's POV The door creaked open, I barely had time to wipe my tears from my cheeks when Dylan's tall figure appeared in the doorway, his eyes shone with the same cold and sketchy look it always had. I hated how that look made my skin crawl, but it was the only thing I’d ever known from him.“What are you doing here?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady, it was still a bit shaky from crying. Dylan stepped inside without waiting for an invitation, his boots making a sharp click against the floor. His eyes roamed my body, observing my injuries and lingering for a moment too long before meeting my eyes again. “I came to offer you a deal,” he said, his tone smooth, almost deceptively casual.I frowned, narrowing my eyes. “A deal?”He moved closer, a smirk playing on his lips, as if he was savoring the moment. “Oh poor Mima. I heard all about how Stephanie is treating you. I mean, she must be doing it out of spite that you were my mate. She will continue to torture you as long as you
I finally got discharged from the pack clinic after four days and I went back to my normal life. Julia, the head maid, had been discharged a day before I was. My wounds were almost completely healed and I could move well without crutches. The scars were still there though and once in a while, I would feel aches and pains in my sides. After the night that Dylan came into my room, my wounds slowly started to heal by itself. My Wolf's presence even came out just a little. I could feel her. I wondered what motivated her to come out.I tried to not think that it was Dylan, because why would she come out for the one that rejected her? I sometimes spoke to her even though she never replied or gave me a sign that she was listening. I limped to my room when I felt my hair dragged and I almost fell backwards as I stumbled. I didn't need a soothsayer to tell me who I had just encountered. I turned around and there she was, Stephanie looking at me with red eyes, puffy eyes. She looked as if sh
Zahra. What was she doing here? She told me that she was being experimented on in the—Wait. Is this what this is about? Are these experimented individuals from the pack's lab? But what is Stephanie planning to do with them? Is she planning to sell them to these sketchy men? What kind of experiments did they practice on them?My mind swirled with many unanswered questions. The men started raising their hands to point at any of the lined up people. There were 10 in total and Zahra was the 9th person. She must have not noticed me yet because she looked ahead at Stephanie, her face in a scrowl. I closed my eyes and prayed fervently in my heart that Zahra shouldn't get chosen but once again, luck wasn't on my side. The shortest of the men turned to her side and stared for a long while before pointing at her to be chosen. All eyes in the room turned to Zahra and she looked like she was about to make a scene. Oh no. She still hadn't noticed me. Stephanie smiled as the men chose 7 out of
Mima's POVI peeked out of my room, heart pounding in my chest, and scanned the hallway. It was empty. Thank the goddess. This might actually work.Gripping the strap of my bag, I stepped carefully into the corridor. I had packed everything I thought I’d need, a few knives stolen from the kitchen, a pair of pliers I’d stumbled upon near the woodshed at the back of the haid maids building, and a scarf to hide my face in case anybody recognises me. The tools clanked softly as I moved, the sound amplified in the stillness of the hallway.I pulled the scarf tighter around my head as I approached the door leading outside. I should hurry before anyone realises that I am missing. I had made sure to create an alibi. I had told one of the head maids that I felt like I had contracted a contagious illness and even went through the trouble of faking a vomit. She had told me to keep myself locked in my room all day and not come out till I am better. The cool air bit at my face as I pressed onward
Mima’s POVKia’s small fingers gripped my arm tightly as he shook, his wide eyes locked on Stephanie. His breath hitched as his tiny chest rose and fell too fast.“Kia?” My voice was soft but all he did was flinch when I spoke. His lips trembled, his fingers twitching as he stammered something under his breath. I leaned closer, trying to catch it. His voice was barely a whisper.“Witch.”The word sent a shiver down my spine. He pointed a trembling finger at Stephanie, his breaths ragged. His entire body shook as if his bones were vibrating under his skin. The room had gone silent. Eyes darted between Kia and Stephanie, murmurs breaking out.Stephanie’s expression twisted into shock and something I couldn't place my finger on. She raised a perfectly arched brow at me and then trailed her eyes to Kia.What did he mean by calling her a witch?I didn’t have time to analyze it. I wrapped my arms around Kia, pulling him into my chest. “I’m sorry,” I said to the table, my voice steady despit
Mima’s POV“You’re taking him with you?” Rake said as he stared at me. His voice was calm as he spoke, and it helped to calm my racing heart, expecting his refusal.I met his stare, my arms tightening protectively around Kia. “Yes.”Beck shifted beside him, looking ready to intervene, but Rake didn’t break eye contact with me. Then, to everyone’s shock, he exhaled and nodded. “Alright.”A beat passed.Zahra let out a loud, exaggerated gasp. “It’s the kiss, isn’t it?” Heat shot up my neck. “Zahra—”She burst out laughing, and Beck followed suit, clapping a hand to Rake's back dramatically. Even Daria snickered behind her hand.Rake arched a brow, then smirked. “Maybe.” I gaped at him.Zahra collapsed onto the bed, gasping with laughter. “Oh, this is the best day of my life. Who would have thought I'd see a day like this? The big bad lycan king and my sweet childhood best friend”I scowled, picking up a pillow and chucking it at her head. “Pack faster before I leave you behind.”She on
Mima’s POVRake’s lips moved against mine, sending a shiver down my spine. His hand rested on my waist, his fingers pressing just enough to make my skin tingle. My heart pounded in my chest, as I felt him thrust his tongue into my mouth, sucking on mine.I was kissing him.My mate.I let myself sink into it for a breath, two, before reality hit me. I came here for a reason.I placed my hands on his chest, pushing lightly. “Rake.”He didn’t pull away immediately. His darkened eyes roamed my face with a small smile on his lips before he finally exhaled, his forehead dropping against mine.“I need to tell you something,” I murmured. His thumb traced slow circles on my waist, a silent urge to continue. I swallowed, forcing myself to focus.“I’m going to the wedding.”Rake stilled. His grip on me loosened slightly. “You’re sure?” “Yes.”He nodded once as if accepting it, but his gaze flickered back to my lips. He tilted his head, his hand moving up to my jaw. “Then let’s finish what we sta
Mima’s POVI barely spoke for days.Daria tried, at first, asking questions like how I found the weather or how I liked my meal, bringing up small things to get me to engage. But I gave her nothing. Eventually, even she stopped trying. The only people I acknowledged were Kai and, occasionally, Daria.Rake kept his distance. He didn't ask about the letter, although I am sure Daria must have told him that I burnt it. We barely crossed paths, mostly because I stayed in my room most of the time.My nightmares, which had momentarily stopped, came back. They weren't the weird men but they went back to Dylan and Stephanie. They came like they always did, dragging me back into places I never wanted to return to. Dark dungeons, my old room and in each one, Dylan's face appeared, especially that night he tried to sexually assault me.Every time I closed my eyes, I was there again.I woke up gasping and shaking, my heart pounding so hard it hurt. And every time, I found Kai awake too, watching m
Mima's POVThe boy was locked up.I stood outside the iron doors of the cell, my fingers tightening around the tray of food in my hands. The dungeons reeked and this place was most definitely not suitable for a child. He sat curled in the farthest corner, knees drawn to his chest, arms wrapped tightly around himself. His dark hair, still matted with dried blood, clung to his forehead. He hadn’t moved since the warriors shoved him inside.“Here,” I said softly, kneeling by the bars. “You need to eat.”His eyes flickered to me, then to the food before looking away. He ignored me.Daria knelt beside me. “He’s scared.”“Of course he’s scared,” I muttered. “He woke up in a cage.”The guilt I felt grew stronger. I had carried him here, thinking I was saving him, but now he was locked behind bars as if he were some kind of criminal.Rake’s orders.I had fought him, of course. Had stood there, shaking with fury, demanding he let the boy go. But Rake had already turned away, shutting me out as
Mima’s POVWe heard rustling in the forest and we both froze where we stood. The rustling grew louder. My body tensed, every sense on high alert.Daria edged closer to me. "Luna, something's out there."I nodded, scanning the treeline. My heart pounded, but the overwhelming power I had felt beneath the water was now just a faint hum. I didn't know if I could call on it again.A low whimper broke the silence. It sounded like an injured animal but I couldn't tell.A whimper sounded again and then I heard it clearly. A child.Daria gasped, rushing forward before I could stop her. "Wait!" I hissed, but she was already kneeling beside a small figure half- hidden by the underbrush.I stepped closer and froze. Aboy.He was curled up, his frail body shaking. His clothes were torn and dirty, and his arms were covered in cuts and bruises. He couldn’t have been older than ten. His dark hair was matted with blood, and his breathing was shallow.Daria reached out hesitantly. "He's hurt."I crouche
Mima’s POVCold. It wrapped around me like a firm hand, squeezing the breath from my lungs. My limbs refused to move, trapped in the unnatural pull of the lake. Panic clawed at my chest. I tried to fight or break free, But I couldn't.My body wasn’t mine anymore. My fingers twitched uselessly as the water dragged me deeper. The glow beneath me pulsed, silver and hypnotic, swirling like something alive. The Moon Goddess said my powers were sealed. Was this them breaking free?I opened my mouth to scream, but only bubbles escaped. Suddenly, the light exploded.A force just like I had felt that night surged through my body, burning and freezing at the same time. My skin prickled, my veins pulsed with raw energy, and my head snapped back as pain lanced through my skull.A voice whispered through the water. "Awaken." The world around me shifted.I wasn't in the lake anymore.I stood in a vast, silver-lit void. The ground beneath me wasn’t solid, but I didn't sink. My breath came in sharp g
Mima's POVI woke up to find that I was alone in my room.Rake must have left to do some work. I felt better, my nightmares had even reduced. I could think straight without remembering my past and I was enjoying my stay in this pack.Everything felt just like how it was before my parents died. I felt a whole lot better.I got out of bed and looked out the window. It was nighttime, and the moon shone so brightly into my room. The moon was beautiful tonight, and I just couldn't take my eyes off it. Then I heard it.“Child.”“Who is there?” I said into the empty room. Was I about to be kidnapped again?I looked around and almost turned my room upside down looking for the voice. By the time I was done, my room had looked as though a tornado had come through it.“Be calm child.”“Stop playing tricks on me, who are you?” I screamed. “The lake, come to the lake.”“No, no you're trying to kill me. Rake wouldn't like it; Rake would be mad if I went again, and he wouldn't listen to me. He woul
Rake's POVI stood outside of the room with a smile on my face. Mima was probably going to be pissed that I kept this from her for so long, but she would be happy, too, and if she was angry, I'd just find a way to appease her.My mind went back to how enthralling she had looked earlier and my heart raced.“Alpha. I'm sorry but I would like to have a word with you.” One of my subordinates called out to me. I nodded at him and followed him to one of the equipment rooms.“We finally got wind of the people that you had described.”At the mention of his words, my face immediately turned into a frown.“Tell me.”“They don't exist on the map.” He said before sucking in a breath and gauging my reaction.“What?! What do you mean by they don't exist on the map?” I asked fuming.“We couldn't find any trace about them from anybody. They didn't have a specific location. I asked around and some people did know them. Some had seen them lurking around in the shadows of their pack or walking in broad
