REBECCA

The soft lighting of my phone almost blinded me and I groaned as I got out of bed. I reached for my blue ray glasses before turning on my laptop to continue my project.

It was sheer luck that I had written to the school management before I dropped out that I'd be suspending my school activities for a while. A while turned into three years.

They agreed to let me pick up where I left off but I had to work fast to graduate with this set. I was already working on my project before I called it quits, no continuing from the smart me three years ago was proving difficult.

Things were moving fast since I decided to focus all my thoughts on it. It was a nice distraction from Oliver-

My phone's light came up and I quickly grabbed it, ignoring the tug of a smile on my lips and the warmth that spread through my chest.

Theo: Up?

How could I explain that my cheeks were hurting from just one word? It didn't even make any sense. When did this start?

We've been texting back and forth f

REBECCA His offer hung over the table with a hush that made my head feel vacant. What was he planning this time? As much as I wanted to be fooled by his look, I knew his mouth was sweetened with false promises and lies. Oliver was barely a man to be held by his words without scrutinising each sentence. He could turn everything against me in the blink of an eye. "A contract?" Was he really proposing that? He was willing to let me go… why did that make me feel more hurt than relieved? "Yes." "Just like that?" I stared into his focused gaze and saw no lies, it terrified me. "You have to work for me and learn the ways to manage the company in under a few months." Something about the way he spoke gave me chills. Why did he sound like he was going away for a few months and needed my help? Did my previous manager praise me so damn well that he thought I could handle it? "What about Victor?" I folded my arms. "He's your assistant, shouldn't he be able to keep things in check while you'

OLIVER It was quiet when I got home. The silence had been blasting on full volumes for days now. No more arguments and yelling, just silence like no one lived here. “She made no attempt to leave the house,” the bodyguard reported as soon as I got home. I already figured she wouldn't attempt anything. She was mad at me and was ready to act stiff and mute till my conscience shrivelled and probably killed me from inside out. I put my things away, wondering how to get her outside her room this time. It wasn't time for dinner but we could spend time discussing what we wanted to eat. Maybe take outs or we could eat together. I was suddenly craving going on a date with her but I knew that was out of the options so I wasn't even going to suggest that. It may earn me a glare– that was a reaction at least. At this point,I would pick her yelling at me over this quiet attitude. Her silence was filling my mind apart. I stood before her door, breathing calmly to gather myself before knocking s

REBECCA I was still shocked that he agreed to it even as he dished out his warnings with a stern voice and a face that said if I tried to dare him, that'll be the end of me. I nodded and when he suggested we make dinner together, I nodded and climbed down the bed. Since he was nice enough to fulfill my request, I figured I might as well return the kindness. “We should just order pizza,” we were out of groceries- how did he not know that? He's been cooking nonstop for three days. “What did you eat for lunch?” “I was working on my project and the document Victor sent,” he snapped his head over to where I was seated on the stool. “ I didn't feel hungry.” “That's not an excuse to starve yourself,” he shut the fridge and picked up his phone to call the pizza house. “Keep up with this behavior and I'll be forced to get you a nanny.” I narrowed my eyes, “Sure.” “I mean it, Rebecca. You don't eat enough, you work all day, do you even sleep?” I tried, trust me. It's harder sleeping on

OLIVER I drummed my hands on the table as I read the same sentence over and over again. The words flew around, over my head and walked off the pages like theu had better things to do than let me stare at their nude form. Ever saw sentences as naked letters lying there to be thoroughly scrutinized for understanding? Fuck! Did we even have their permission to read them? Did that bastard even have the permission to meet up with her at will? I was her guardian and protector. He should be busy protecting the city. Why stick his nose in my woman? That came out wrong. She wasn't my woman, she was just… well.. my ward and my fake girlfriend. I couldn't term her my sister, God no! Foster sister? That was far from it. Fuck! I couldn't seem to concentrate, all my thoughts were playing out scenes of her kissing and moaning in his arms. He didn't touch her the last time. I checked or at least, I'd like to believe I was right. I still felt guilty for falling for her seduction and sticking my

OLIVER Her bodyguards were missing at the scene too and her phone, we retrieved it from one of the cops. I sat in my car blood boiling as I gripped my phone hard, watching Victor and the detective talking next to what was left of my car. The image refused to leave my head even as I closed my eyes to try and concentrate. Think, Oliver. After getting off the phone with my grandfather, I've never felt so lost and so confused. Besides that feeling plaguing my mind, my body trembled as I imagined what she could possibly be going through right now. Who was it? Who would put their hands on her? “Stop yelling, boy,” My grandfather sneered into the phone when I barked at him to release her or else I'd burn the company to the ground. “You wouldn't dare go against what has fed you and kept you going for years-” “Try me. If you don't release her alive,” I emphasised. “In the next ten minutes-” “She could be dead in under ten minutes, whoever has her must have a bone to pick with you,” he

OLIVER “I’m coming with,” Theo protested, asking for the address once I put down the call. I hadn't even said a word yet he read me like a page on the news. “No,” I wasn't going to risk her life by bringing a fucking cop around. Didn't he have some bloody sense to think that through? “I know someone just called you concerning-” “Then you'd know you can't bring a fucking cop unless you want her brains on the menu,” I snapped, feeling a lot older now having spelled that out. This was who she wanted to replace me with? Besides his good looking face– which I topped and dominated anyways– his biker fit and his American accent, there was nothing special about this man. As a reply, he crossed over to the other side and got into my car, making himself comfortable. “I'll keep my head down if I have to and pose as one of your bodyguards. I'm not letting you go all by yourself.” “I don't need a babysitter-” “It's not for you, dummy,” he took out his weapon and checked his bullets, prepari

OLIVER I glanced at Rebecca, my blood boiling from how dishevelled she looked. Her eyes were weak and she looked like she was barely hanging on. Every single one of them wasn't going to get away with this. "Shit! What the fuck are you talking about?" Victor asked, clearly pissed and impatient. He hated riddles as much as I did but I'm shocked he didn't grasp that as fast as I did. "You know what I mean," Mr. West said again, his tone teasing this time. He had noticed my discomfort already and he too glanced at Rebecca. "Yes, of course I understand it's top secret," he waved off to the one who wheeled her in and he started to take her out again- "No, she stays," I demanded. This was a bad idea on so many levels but I couldn't let her out of my sight again. "What did they do to her?" I heard Theo's whisper of horror and he took a step closer, which of course, earned him raised guns in his direction. "Why don't we discuss it in private?" I took a deep breath to remain in control and

OLIVER He suddenly erupted in laughter, jolting the men behind him as they jerked out of their shock. The greed on their faces was immediately wiped off but they glanced around considering the offer. “You're just like the old man,” he wiped his tears off his eyes. “Buy these men for that price? Don't be ridiculous, Oliver. That's a waste of good money. They'd wag to anything and I'm already their saviour.” I dug my hands in my pants as I shrugged, “Well it was worth a short. The cheque has already been signed and written. All that's left is to be cashed. Grandfather wouldn't care who it's given to-” “Nice try, Oliver but these ones pledge their loyalty to me. Even a dog knows not to bite its owner,” he waved off in a scornful tone. “Are you sure about that?” I took a step closer, noticing how they flinched and aimed their weapons again, causing me to stop. A smirk pulled at his lips and he grinned at me, “Now shall we talk about what you're planning? I don't know the full detail

REBECCAI put the coffee on the table and looked around.Where was Victor? He called me a few minutes ago that he'd be here.I glanced at the time. It was a few minutes past 6pm. and I had to rush to the grocery store to get groceries for dinner. Mom already sent me a list of things she would need.My phone rang and I quickly picked it up, "Hey, Tania.""Hey, girl. How are you doing?""I'm alright. Just waiting for Victor to show up so I can get home and get some sleep.""That assistant guy? What's he doing over there?" she wondered."He's here on a business trip and he's supposed to give me some documents to sign. Some kind of shares split." Oliver had a big part of Arthur's and my father's share and now he was transferring it back.Well… some."You're splitting it?""He is the adopted son of Arthur and should have Arthur's share.""Didn't they both decide to give it to you?""That was before Oliver came into the picture. Besides, I can't just take it all. He's worked hard for that c

REBECCA:FEW MONTHS LATERI grabbed my coat off the hanger by the side of the door and threw it on, wore my boots and grabbed my bag pack. Gently and quietly, I tried to open the door-"Rebecca Hoffman, you come back here, right now!" my mother screamed from behind me and I yelped, turned around with a racing heart to find her glaring at me. She was still in her pyjamas and had on her hair net."Jesus, Mom! It's 8am. and we have neighbours," I tried to remind her but she only stormed towards me with her face in a pout and grabbed my hands."You're not leaving without breakfast, now sit!" She pulled me to a stool in the kitchen and she took out some pots."I'm going to run late," I whined. "I have class in about an hour and that professor is as strict as they come.""I'll come beat him up if you want."I rolled my eyes as she tried to make something simple and light while I drummed my fingers on the table. I pulled off my jacket and laid it to rest on the counter and scrolled through m

REBECCA"Is that why your mother is heavily guarded?" I wondered, making sense of it now as I took a step closer to him. "You've been associated with him. You used me-"He shook his head-"Say something," anything but of what use was it when the evidence stared me right in the face? He couldn't deny it. Not after what I've heard so clearly."I didn't…" he trailed off. "I didn’t use you… in the beginning, yes, I approached you because I was-""Oh my God!" I gasped and sobbed as the tears spilled over."But that was until I got to know you-""Yadda, yadda, yadda," Richard dismissed. "It's the same damn thing. You used her because she was close to Oliver and wanted to get closer to me. Well congratulations, it worked. You must be pleased with yourself now.""You know, the cops are fortunate to have you. Why don't you come work for me? I'll double-- no, triple your salary and we could start with you getting rid of that boy, Oliver for me. He's my adoptive grandchild and I can do whatever

REBECCAI stared at Theo in shock as the old man looked beyond pleased staring at him. Betrayed yet again? By everyone surrounding my life. I was betrayed by the one I thought would have my back."Why…?" I trailed off. I couldn't even cry or feel sorry for myself this time. "I trusted you-""You trust the wrong people," the old man said. "I tried to extend a genuine hand to help you but what did you do? You decided to bite a good hand. How does it taste now?" he glared at me but still had that look of triumph because he was clearly enjoying himself and his victory.I failed.Right at the edge of a breakthrough… I… "Why?" I screamed at him and Sophia gasped. I was immediately reminded that the two were still here and now they clung to each other as they trembled in fear."I can't believe I missed this spot," he sighed. "I searched for years and years for this yet you two idiots had this lying under your shop? Do you know what these are!" he screamed at them, instilling more fear and th

REBECCAMy father sure made a fool out of these people for fifteen whole years."Are you sure we're in the right place?" Theo asked again, refusing to believe his eyes and I looked at the picture my mother had confirmed."Yes," it was a coffee shop facing the Wright Company. How interesting was it that they all passed the place every day for fifteen years yet not one of them thought to come here to check."Wow. Okay. Let’s go in and order coffee? Or how does this work?" I looked at the key again and all that was on it was just numbers. "I guess we'll have to go in and find out." I opened the door and stepped out.We walked in together, and we walked right onto the front. The young woman behind the counter smiled, "Hello-" her eyes widened in realisation when she saw me but she was nice enough to shut her mouth and go straight to business. "What would you like to order?""Can I see the manager please?"She arched her brows, "Uhm… may I know why? Do you have a complaint? You can relay

I heard her discussing with Oliver while I was at his place then saw her pick it up from the ground."How could she have kept something like that away from me? She knew how much I was worried about her. I wanted to leave this damn country and the only reason we stayed back was because of her.I felt betrayed and this one hurt more than anything."Calm down. You're breathing too hard.""I can't help it. She betrayed me-""I'm sure she has her reasons. She wouldn't do that to you-"I tried to tell myself that but it sounded like a big fat lie and I didn’t want to delude myself. How could she trust Oliver more than me, her own daughter? After everything…"I'm gonna steal it," I whispered."What?""I need to know what's in that warehouse and I can't trust the fucking police. • The CEO's Forever Pet   117. Betrayed

REBECCAFrom the front door as I walked into the house to the living room where we used to watch movies and have little date nights, tears filled my eyes as I looked around. I trailed my fingers over the counter top in the kitchen and memories of when he once made my mother's favourite soup waltzed back in my head and I couldn't stop the tears from rolling down. This used to be a home once.Oliver and I were so comfortable around each other that we felt married. Or at least, I had felt that way. Clearly it was a delusion but it was everything to me at one point.I loved waking up to Saturday mornings where he would cook breakfast while I watched sometimes or he served me in bed. Where we both decorated with our favourite colours blending into something beautiful.Oh, I had dreams and he had orchestrated every single one of them. Whether he truly loved me or not, I would never know. Not like I even wanted to anymore. I was calling it quits.I climbed the stairs, remembering how he once

REBECCA I've been bedridden for a few days. I took the rest of my exams online with a supervisor assigned to me. It went smoothly despite the chaos of a few days but I didn't want anything to weigh me down.If I wasn't reading, I caught myself staring into space, thinking of my child and how he managed to survive.“I guess this one is really stubborn, isn't he?” I thought to myself. Just like his damn daddy. At least that was one way to know the baby was Oliver's.Despite seeing my condition, he still kept his mouth shut. Most nights I woke up from a nightmare, screaming the house down. It was always the same scene, only this time instead of the strange man who stabbed me, it was Oliver's grandfather while I watched Oliver stand at a distance with either his sealed or he rendered endless apologies instead.I was sick of hearing him apologise. I was tired of it. It burned in my memory and now whenever I thought about him, it was always about him saying sorry.Funny how he used to do f

OLIVER I was sent with a mission; to poison the Hoffman's down to their little girl. The old man was heartless but what did I care, it was a chance to be accepted and not to be thrown out to the streets once more. But that night, I picked up all my stuff and chose to run away for their own safety.I'd go to a river somewhere and drown because returning to the orphanage would only put the other kids in trouble and I didn't want to cause more trouble for anyone.A black van pulled up to me and I wasn't surprised to see my father's men. One of them grabbed me before I could bolt.“Pay up,” they said, one to the other. “I told you he couldn't do it.”“Look at him. He's a desperate little thing with no guts. You can't live a good life by being weak, you imbecile!” they smacked my head and tossed me about, laughing as they had fun.“I'll call them that I have the boy,” one of them said and took out his phone-“No!” I tried to reach for it but I was knocked down before I even knew what hit
