Caroline pov

I observed her lips moving as she spoke nonsensically. How could she even contemplate borrowing a child for a few hours, nearly extending it to an entire day? "Please, Lana, can you cease your chatter?" I implored, my voice barely rising above a whisper, as I directed a determined gaze towards her.

"I cannot refrain from speaking, Caroline. What about the child? He might open up, despite my pleas for him to remain silent," she replied, pacing anxiously at the entrance of the café.

I could see the fear in her eyes; she was not only attempting to steady herself but also escalating the tension.

"It is foolish of you to believe that the young child will not refer to you as 'Lana,' his adopter. Prepare yourself for the consequences," I warned. At that moment, she halted her pacing and grasped my wrist tightly.
