Chapter Forty-four

CATHERINE POV

As I stood there, frozen in fear, I felt something touch my arm. I opened my eyes, and I saw the pup, its eyes pleading with me. Then, I heard a voice in my head, as clear as day. "You can do this," it said. "You're stronger than you know."

I looked down at the pup, and I felt a surge of courage. This creature may be bigger and stronger than me, but I had something it didn't. I had love. And I was going to fight with everything I had to protect the pup.

I took a deep breath, and I stepped forward, standing between the creature and the pup. "I won't let you hurt this pup," I said, my voice trembling but firm. "It's innocent and it's done nothing to you."

The creature let out a low, rumbling laugh. "You think you can stop me?" it sneered. "You're nothing but a puny human. What could you possibly do?"

I gritted my teeth, and I prepared myself for the worst. "You're about to find out," I said.

Just then, the pup let out a loud, high-pitched yelp. It sounded almost like a bat
