Chapter Forty-nine

CATHERINE POV

The figure stepped forward, his eyes never leaving me. I felt frozen, unable to move. "You have been running for a long time," he said, his voice smooth and low. "But there is nowhere left to run. You have come to the end of your journey." I tried to speak, but no words would come. He took another step towards me, and I felt his hand on my shoulder. I could feel the coldness of his touch, and I shuddered. "There is no need to be afraid," he said.

"I have been waiting for you," the figure continued. "I knew that you would come here eventually. And now that you are here, we can begin." He turned to the woman who had brought us here, and she nodded, her expression unreadable. I turned to look at my companions, but they were frozen in place, their eyes wide with fear. I wanted to tell them to run, to get away while they still could. But I could not speak, and I could not move.

"What are you going to do?" I finally managed to croak out.

"I am going to help you," the figure sa
