139 The medical ward

Hearing Jacob's final remarks as Kamara neared the room, she had entered uninvited and couldn't conceal her emotions. Tears were already welling up in her eyes, and she was nervous about the terrible images that kept replaying in her head, making her assume the worst.

At another time, Kamara would have found it strange to hear Caiden's arid, icy voice say, "You can't just barge into my room without being summoned," but right then, all Kamara could think about was Nate.

She approached him, took Sterling, and said, "I don't give a damn about your rules, Caiden." Then she moved away. "Go ahead and punish me if you like, but tell me where Nate is."

Caiden stared at her, wondering if he should bring up these topics with Sterling present.

Anxiously he remarked, "Nate went to the human city for an investigation and hasn't returned yet; but Ed is the one who's in danger, not Nate."
