XAVIERA

This was the calm before the storm.

I stood in the gallery, dressed in a red dress, my hands resting on the balustrade, while I watched the throng of bodies move sensually below. It was the Red festival of the Red moon pack, and everyone was in a celebratory mood. From my vantage position, Zee, my elder sister, was giggling like a schoolgirl in the arms of her mate, Luca, while the latter seemed quite satisfied with the woman in his arms.

Our father, Alpha Wayne sat on his dignified cushion chair decorated with crystal gems, flanked by the chief Gamma, Sir Adrian and his Beta, Felix.

My mother, Luna Anne, stood in the circle of the court ladies, who were also wives of wolves of ranks exchanging hot topics, or as Zee would call it, “Red gist” —over glasses of white wine. My other siblings were scattered around, and about having fun. Every other person appeared all loved up, the goddess had blessed all the werewolves of Red Moon who were of age either with a mate, or their wolf just a month ago.

I had been blessed with both. However, I couldn't enjoy the ceremony. Not after what I'd heard earlier tonight.

My gaze strayed to Collins, my mate, who stood out in the midst of the festivities like a sore thumb. His fingers were firmly wrapped around the base of a glass of wine that had swiftly succeeded several others. He was drinking a lot tonight, and I didn't understand why.

“It's high time you put the young man out of his misery, don't you think?” The hoarse timbre of Asher's voice interrupted my line of thoughts, as he joined me in the gallery.

I took a swift whiff of his scent, quickly detecting the contrasting strawberry scent that clung to him in a tight embrace. “Does he look miserable to you?” I asked, cocking my brow playfully at him, taking him in a careful glance. His auburn hair appeared a bit ruffled, like fingers had raked through and pulled, and his dark green eyes looked satisfied—a look that had been a constant thing, “And what's that —”

“It's Kaya” Asher interrupted me smoothly with a knowing look.

“That wasn't what I was going to ask,” my eyes narrowed suspiciously.

“You were going to ask anyway,” he shrugged.

“I wasn't,” I denied.

“Well, you didn't have to. Your face did the asking” he chuckled humorously. “For a Delta wolf, you surely are too easy to read” he remarked.

“So Kaya changed her perfume, heh?” I prodded casually. Not that I believed Asher capable of cheating on his wife and mate, who was also his first love—fortunately—but…

“Amongst other things. You wouldn't believe what pregnancy could do to a woman,” he remarked, his eyes lighting up dreamily.

An absolutely finished man.

“She woke up this morning, and decided to smell like strawberries. And, I combed through several perfumeries for the right type of strawberry fragrance. It was nerve-wracking, but I got my reward just few minutes ago, cause added to weird cravings and desires, is also her powerful need for sex”

Oh god!

“Please, stop”

“I mean, the sex between us is magnificent, but this pregnancy has taken it to the highest echelons of desire.” He prattled on, quite elated with the prospect. “You know, there's this —”

“Okay, enough Asher,” I interrupted him, embarrassed on his behalf. If I let him continue, he might just frustrate me with traumatizing details of his sex life.

“Don't be a prude, I caught you sucking faces with Collins the night before”

What?!

I was certain I looked as mortified as I felt, quite embarrassed by Asher's exaggeration of what was supposed to be a first kiss—an action thwarted by his cockblocking.

“Our lips barely touched!” I defended myself.

“Good. You just saved a man's life,” he said, titling his head arrogantly. I scoffed at this, my attention returning to the party below.

“He's my mate, in case you missed the memo” My eyes swiftly swept through the crowd searching for Collins who had stood right there a few seconds ago. He was nowhere in sight.

Where did he go?

“Doesn't mean you should start fucking,” Asher retorted, successfully shocking me into a near heart attack, and unbelievable embarrassment.

“Oh my goodness!”

“What? You don't like the act of fucking?” He taunted, his lips curling into a satisfied smirk.

“Asher!” I gasped.

“You shouldn't be scared of fucking though” he continued.

“Oh, please, shut up!” I chuckled, the thought of my body and Collins’ in an intimate position, settling on my mind for a little while. I liked the prospect.

“Oh you like it!” Asher continued his taunts, at my giggle, he sighed. “Definitely going to murder that fucker” he said between gritted teeth.

“Like Kaya's brother murdered you?”

“Oh please,” he scoffed. “ I am going to be Alpha someday, he loves me.”

“Ah!”

“Ah, yes,” he agreed. “But seriously though, why are you up here keeping guard instead of down there, enjoying the festival?”

My thoughts drifted back to the conversation I'd eavesdropped on tonight. I debated telling him about what I'd heard our parents and the military gammas discussing an hour or so, but I didn't have all the details. I knew as much as I had heard and seen, and for all I knew, it might not be our pack.

“I'd rather watch” I decided.

“You're not on duty, Veera. There's enough time to stand guard, so tonight have some fun” he urged me gently. Collins walked through one of the doors that led outside the ballroom to the courtyard. He seemed calm, his glass was gone, and his hands settled in his pants pockets as he casually strolled through the crowd. He seemed more relaxed than earlier.

“I know,” I offered offhandedly, my eyes trained on my meandering mate. There was something new about him, an aura I couldn't really fathom.

“Xaviera, what is it?” Asher asked, following my gaze. Just then, Collins looked upwards, towards me. His gaze was quite intense, and unlike my shy mate. The sound of glass tore through our little intense stare, I broke gazes first. A man led a drunken woman out through the crowd, then I caught Luca pulling Zee out of the room, a mischievous look on his face, and my sister's lunatic giggling trailing behind them. “What is it?” Asher asked again.

“What do you mean?”

“Okay, I don’t buy your bullshit. None of it. You've been uneasy all evening, your energy is all hyped, and that stare down with Collins? What the fuck is going on?”

“What—” I began to deflect, but a rapid movement caught my eye. A Delta officer, three ranks above mine, trudged in, his face contorted in a grimace, with an aura of urgency that meant only one thing to my already hyped senses. He bent, muttered something to the Chief Gamma, Adrian, who sat by my father's left, and the man in turn whispered something to my father, whose eyes widened in shock, then shifted to dread. A chill slivered down my spine.

My father whispered to his Beta, both of them got up in a fluid movement, swiftly walking out through the door, a host of the council behind them. Chief Adrian approached my mother, who had been watching the exchange.

“Xaviera!” Asher called, tapping on my shoulders.

“Something's wrong.” I whispered to him.

“What?”

“Get Kaya, Zee and everyone to safety” I moved away from him, heading towards the stairs.

“Okay, fucking slow down and—” he said behind me

“We barely got time, Asher. Go!”

“What in the—”

“Now!” I howled. He nodded in understanding, turning away from me. I descended the stairs, heading for my mother who was struggling to stay as comported as her gingerly secured auburn hair. The guards gathered my other siblings. Curious gazes fell and rested upon us, as I joined them.

“What's going on?” Kaya asked, pushing forward with her protruding stomach. She smelt of strawberries, and the scent of her perfume made me uneasy.

“Just follow the—” My mother began to say, when a loud sound burst through the night, halting the jolly sounds in one powerful explosion. Another one followed suit, hitting closer to home, shaking the foundations of the mansion. The chandelier above us staggered in effect, then dropped, the sound of shattering crystals sent the whole room into full panic mode, which was greeted by another explosion.

“Quick! Follow Chief Adrian!” My mother shouted, amidst the ruckus.

“Xaviera!” Collins called, joining us. He pulled me into a hug, then ran his hand up to my neck. He was shaking visibly, but I couldn't blame him. I was the fighter, Collins had always been too soft for issues like this.

“Hey, it's alright. We'll get to safety” I assured him, running a hand over his hair in reassurance.

“What's going on?” he asked shakily.

“We are under attack!”

XAVIERA It was about us. The enemy was out for our blood. Was all that ran through my mind. The discussion from earlier was really about our pack. A loud bang tore through the already chaotic air. People screamed, running out of the hall. “Oh my God!” Collins gasped.“Comport yourself, boy!” Chief Adrian admonished him. To my mother he said; “ follow Sir Kelvin, you'd be taken out of the city through the underground pathway. A van will be waiting to move you all. Move fast and together, I'll go find the Alpha!” Then he turned on his heels in the midst of the chaotic room, and was gone. “I can't find Zee!” Asher shouted, panting as he joined us, another explosion tore through the walls, indenting it with large cracks. The people went helter-skelter, stampeding for safety. “Oh God!” My mother gasped dreadfully “where did she go?!” “She was with Luca” I said, Jordan was beginning to make a fuss, and little Georgia was shaking like a leaf in my mother's arm. Six years onALPHA RYKER Becoming Alpha meant several things, including sitting for hours with grim-faced men old enough to be your grandfather, while trying to make sense of how five men mysteriously disappeared from their position of duty, and one returning unalived. We were seated in the spacious Crescent court in the Crescent Villa. The expansive room had a large mahogany rectangular shaped table that was about three hundred metres long. Thirty six elders and wolves of rank sat at each end of the table. I took my place at the top of it, by my right sat Caden, who was now my beta and by my left, Reid sat. Mason, who was supposed to be my second beta under Elder Lowell's advice, sat by Reid, his expression sour for a totally different reason. Tonight, the court had several intermingling reactions, and I could easily pick on the vibes, two of which were most prominent; Anger and fear. Everyone was right in their feelings. They had every right to be angry, five Sentinels missing all

I was stuck—stuck in a way I couldn't decipher. Sweat trickled down my face as I fought to free my legs, loud screams from the house sent slithering chills down my spine.I shook like a leaf under the merciless assault of the wind. “Run! Run! XAVIERAThe sun radiated brightly above the lush meadow, and the calm breeze swept past us in a warm caress, encouraging the sweet smells of Gardenia flowers Mrs Barnes had planted around her cozy cafe to spread its exhilarating savor around. My hair was loosely wrapped in a messy bun, and I was dressed in a simple round-necked cream chiffon top with flower embroideries on the left breast, and a dark denim skirt and sandals. Somehow I found myself in Moonlit Cafe, with Adeline and Leesa, sharing lunch and unavoidable gossip. “Alpha Ryker is definitely getting a mate this year” Lessa popped, sipping from her glass of rosemary citrus spritzer.“And how do you know that?” Adeline queried between chewing on her burrito. “Erin” Lessa shrugged, placing her cup on the table.Erin was always filling her in on Palace gossip. Thanks to Erin, we knew his mistress didn't eat peas; had a special set of glasswares in the manor, and never ate with anything but those.“And how does Erin know?”“Duh

ALPHA RYKERMy only crime was chivalry. I stared at the large brown stain on my shirt, disliking the feel of the sticky liquid that had clung to my skin. I was having a break, and that woman of hair decided to ruin it. How could she be so careless, running around as though she was being chased? What If no one was there to prevent her fall? She was clumsy, weird and fragile. But, there was something about her though. Her eyes reminded me of emeralds. It wasn't my intention, but I couldn't help but notice everything about her features in that brief encounter. Besides the fact that she was quite beautiful, there was something about her I couldn't really place a finger on. Why did I feel like we've met before? “Calum?” I called on my driver for the day. He was one of the Zetas from Caden's special team. Caden made sure I went out with members of his team if he wasn't with me. I hadn’t slept a wink last night; Too many thoughts had kept me awake, and I wasn't a fan of pills. I watched the round resplendent globe rise slowly, dispelling darkness of the night and casting a golden glow over everything within its focus. I turned away from the sight of it, back to my chair. My laptop sat booted and running on the glass table. I had used work to past time, hoping sleep would come along the line, but it didn't. A lot had happened in the past few weeks, and even if I had trained myself never to worry over things that were out of my control, it was tough to ignore how incessantly out of control things were becoming. Firstly, the dark moon pack kept on infiltrating our pack, murdering and kidnapping, and the more we tightened security measures, the more the casualties. It was as if they could walk through anythi

BETA CADENLife is never stagnant, I'm quite aware of that. But sometimes, the way it moves is quite surprising. That also goes without saying life is full of surprises, and in one night, I'd been hit with two of it—two powerful curve balls. Ryker, who had never believed in mates, and had planned his life without the appearance of one, had been given a mate. And not not just any other, but the woman that had piqued my interest. A woman he obviously didn't want. Everyone was astonished for several reasons. Ryker, because he'd been placed in a precarious position by tonight's happening. Xaviera, as any woman in her situation ought to be, was terrified and astonished, which was justified. My mother wasn't just elated, but relieved. And she had enough reasons to be. I was relieved, but not elated. I had my game set, and the goddess had played her hand. I stood in the crowd, watching them dance, tension oozed heavily between them, and a knot tightened in my chest. They both didn't want

Snow-like trasculescent flakes dropped from the sky bathing us in its beauty. I however couldn't enjoy the moondusts as I did previous years, being in the centre of it, nonetheless. My mind was too preoccupied to actually enjoy the ‘peak’ of the festival as Adeline would describe it. Turns out our definition of peak had been altered tonight. I stood dazed, unable to process what had just happened, and the implications of what it meant. The man before me seemed equally stunned, but aside from shock, there was hard disbelief. I became very much aware of the continuous gasps and murmurings around us, we weren't the only ones in disbelief. There was also curiosity, and the question they so badly wanted answers to was “who is she?” Who was I?I had been mated to the insanely gorgeous Alpha Ryker of t

XavieraThe rest of the week was not without the constant reminder that my life had changed. The whispers had morphed into smiles and small bows, and then suspicious whispers. I overheard two women discussing one time, the possibility of the Alpha marrying his girlfriend, instead of his mate. Another time, two women were comparing myself and his current girlfriend. They said she was more classy, and elegant. Some had said she was more regal, a Crescent she-wolf and was the best fit for Luna, so they didn't know why the goddess picked me. One woman had even described me as a ‘pick-me’ girl. The gossips were becoming quite unbearable, and I didn't know why it affected me. I hadn't always bothered how people thought of me, attractive or not. One time, I was the stunning moon in my pack. If preferences were different, I didn't really mind. I was done with all the attention of my previous life. Also, Alpha Ryker could sleep with the whole town if he so wished, it was none of my busines

ALPHA RYKERI stood before the large mirror in my spacious closet, going over my look for the last time. My team had done a nice job ensembling and styling my look for tonight. Although Aria had suggested I dress in a blue tux, I loved how good I looked in black, and I could never pass on black when it was an option. Aria had released an update to the press, describing in detail my ensemble for tonight. She had insisted it was important to state how I dressed. Something for the fashion blogs and columns to chew on. My appearance was as important as my leadership skills. I didn't argue with that. I loved to dress, and Aria and her team indulged me.I dressed in a black peak lapel cashmere tuxedo and pants, perfectly tailored. It accentuated my physique; a crispy white dress shirt with a wing collar and french cuffs. I pinned the cuffs with diamond cufflinks from my father's collections. I had declined knotting a tie, and had undid the first two buttons aiming for a hint of causality.I

The last time I had seen her was over five years ago, the night of the Red festival. The next day, she was gone, as had everyone who used to know her. I hadn't seen her since then. However, she showed up again tonight, a little older now, more comely, still sophisticated, and gorgeously adorned in beautiful fabric, jewelleries and a perfect hairdo. I missed feeling beautiful. Adeline was right. This dress was made just for me. I loved how the silky fabric of the off-shoulder, low cut back dress draped elegantly on my body. The corset had cinched masterfully at the waist accentuating my figure, making my waist smaller, while the flowy skirt made my hips a little bit wider.
