ALPHA RYKER
Six Years On...
Becoming Alpha meant several things, including sitting for hours with grim-faced men old enough to be your grandfather, while trying to make sense of how five men mysteriously disappeared from their position of duty, and one returning unalived.
We were seated in the spacious Crescent court in the Crescent Villa. The expansive room had a large mahogany rectangular shaped table that was about three hundred metres long. Thirty six elders and wolves of rank sat at each end of the table. I took my place at the top of it, by my right sat Caden, who was now my beta and by my left, Reid sat. Mason, who was supposed to be my second beta under Elder Lowell's advice, sat by Reid, his expression sour for a totally different reason.
Tonight, the court had several intermingling reactions, and I could easily pick on the vibes, two of which were most prominent; Anger and fear. Everyone was right in their feelings. They had every right to be angry, five Sentinels missing all at once was no joke. Those who feared the incident were also right. Whatever had the potency of removing five men at once, within a second, and returning one three days later brutally murdered, should be feared.
Now, it was more glaring and the timing was wrong because we were a few weeks away from celebrating the biggest ball in our pack’s history, and some Pack decided that it would be fun to kidnap and murder our sentinels.
“I think at this rate, it is quite obvious. The Greenwood pack did this” Elder Aiden was the first to speak above the murmurings. The table swung at him, several eyes shooting death glares his way. Garret scoffed. “What?” his voice rose defensively, his busy brows knitting in one straight rough line.
“You said ‘obvious’, then went ahead to mention the wrong pack” Garrett chided.
“Have you forgotten that Alpha Edgar left this court in a fit three months ago? He promised to declare war. This is war!” Aiden objected.
“Alpha Edgar might have the temper of a wild boar, and the IQ of a sloth, but one thing every Alpha knows is that the Crescent moon is one pack that shouldn’t be messed with. He wouldn’t dare. Not when the dispute we had was over a trivial matter” Aaron disagreed calmly.
“Yes,” Lucas concurred gingerly. “Whoever did this, must have been planning to war with us. And I would bet my money on the fact that a good number of us know who is responsible” At his statement, countering murmurs erupted.
Give it to Lucas to stir up the people.
When I visited the crime scene, I quickly picked on a strange scent. It had jolted my senses, digging up a twenty year old memory of carnage. I didn't need a seer to reveal these things, and by the dread that filled some of the elders, neither did they.
“You’re making assumptions.” Mason countered. This was the first time he'd spoken, after arriving late to find out I had commanded Reid to sit in his position.
“Am I?” Lucas charged. “The last thing we want is any sort of boycotting. The message was clear”
“There was barely a message, just death,” Mason countered again.
“Isn't death itself a message?” Reid asked him. He shot Reid a glare, his lips thinning in anger.
“It's simply death” He reiterated.
“Brutal death” Aaron contradicted solemnly, his expression was dark and drawn—and contagious. His words had easily provoked images, painful images of a torturous death.
I was going over a few papers in my study, when my Beta had come looking disturbed. Caden was barely rattled, his expression was always stoic. We were raised that way. However, whatever it was had gotten to him so bad his worry was visible.
After the Sentinels went missing, the pack hunters had gone on a search for days unend. Despite how futile it turned out, we didn't relent on the search. Several security measures were equally taken to protect the people, like the trackers designed into several accessories which were activated by several technologies on the pack grounds. The pack’s safety was my priority, and I was accountable for each of them. We searched and waited three weeks, yet no sign of any of them until yesterday.
When Caden had come with news, I refused to believe a word he said until I saw the dismembered body of one of the missing Sentinels. His upper body was haphazardly separated from the lower body, and his head was severed and partly burnt in a way that was unfathomable. His mother had collapsed upon seeing him. She had only recognised her son from his scent.
“This might be war, but we can not go to war in our current state” Mason spoke after a long silence.
This was the only sensible thing he'd said in quite a long time. Surely, he had little hope.
"Why?" Amar questioned, “what is wrong with 'our current state’?” His bushy brows were knitted in a rough line, his large nose snorted gasses, and his thin lips hid grimly underneath his disheveled mustache. He was clearly as pissed as he appeared, or even more. His sister’s son was amongst the missing men.
“A lot is at stake,” Raymond Sanders considered calmly.
“Is that it?” he questioned incredulously “There’s more to lose if we sit on our hands and let these people poke at us for fun. Did you see the body? Did you see what they did to one of us? And there are others, more to come!” This caused the others to shudder. I couldn't imagine seeing four more bodies like the one of yesterday.
“We barely know who did this,” Elder Aiden reasoned.
“Oh, come off it!” Amar rose to his feet, anger emanating from his pores. “I can smell the fear ten miles away from you! No Greenwood wolf would rattle you this way.”
“I am not scared!” Elder Aiden refuted defensively. I watched both of them, picking their auras. One had a combustible anger, and the other had fear.
Of course he was afraid.
“Everyone knows that the Darkmoon pack did this!” Lucas announced, amidst the brewing chaos, successfully plunging the whole table into full blown panic mode. Caden shot a glance my way, I met his dark eyes. He knew right from the start.
“You do not know that,” Mason disputed. “Weren’t they extinct for over fifteen years or so? We cannot begin to point fingers yet,” he added.
“Extinct, you say? It's no hidden knowledge that they went into hiding after their Vizier and his heir were killed, but his second son lives and has been regrouping” Lucas said.
“Still doesn't mean this could be them” Mason argued.
“Boy, my eyes have seen war, far more than whatever you’ve witnessed. This is the Darkmoon pack, the scent said it all. Evil.” Lucas deadpanned, his gaze fixated on Mason.
“Do not address me like a child. I know what war feels like” Mason was quick to defend himself.
No, you do not.
“You do not know what it means to war against the rogues of Darkmoon. You cannot fathom” Jerome spoke up, directing a long look at Mason's way. Mason shifted uncomfortably in his seat.
The murmurings heightened as the people began to talk amongst themselves. Fear swarmed the place.
“So you think we are no match for them?” Amar questioned in an accusatory tone. “Are you doubting the capabilities of our Deltas?” This time, his gaze was fixed on Jerome, the Chief Zeta, and general commander of Crescent Zetas and Deltas.
“ The Darkmoon pack has a rigid reputation built from a series of brutality and conquests. They are what they have claimed to be. For your question, no, our Zetas and Deltas are more than equipped to battle and conquer the Rogues and any other opposing pack “ Jerome spoke with a calmness that always had me appreciating his position as Chief Zeta “But I think Raymond is right. We can’t attack at this time”
Jerome was smart and calculated. He knew the ways of war, what to say and how to say it. My father had never made a better choice in selection than this.
“If the Zetas and Deltas are as capable as you’ve claimed, why the hesitation and emphasis on timing?” Amar prodded.
“Because we know the Darkmoon rogues.” Jerome quipped. I knew this. Hrolf will not attack us if he didn't believe he could war with us. I knew they were baiting us. “We also know how bloody of a war we would fight to have them retreat or be defeated. Now is not the time” he finished.
“They took five of our sentinels, and had one brutally murdered!” Amar spat. “Are we going to sit and watch them treat us like toothless dogs?” He growled.
“We are not sitting on our hands...” Jerome rebutted, a bit triggered by Amar's inability to see reason.
“We are!” Amar cut him off.
“If only you’d listen...” Raymond intervened
“To what?” Amar thundered.
“Silence!” I ordered, totally irritated by Amar's blind rage. The hall went silent. I stood to my feet, towering above the whole table. Amar sat down grudgingly.
“The last thing we should do now is argue. We have to be more level headed, and calculated at this point now, more than ever. “ I watched the whole table watch me as I spoke. I had their full attention. “Elder Lowell, a penny for your thoughts?”
The old man who had silently observed the whole table, sat up slowly, then cleared his throat. I took my seat. “Thank you, Alpha '' He began in a hoarse voice. “The Darkmoon pack has always been a thorn in our flesh. Their attacks are glaring and insulting, and not retaliating may be interpreted as weakness." He paused, scanning the room. Amar nodded in agreement. “But," he continued, "retaliating at this time, when the Crescent ball is fast approaching will cost us the joy of the moon. We cannot afford such risky decisions and its consequences at this time "
“I agree.” Garret concurred.
“Well said, Elder Lowell” I commended, the old man bowed slightly “We can not go to war now. We have to investigate properly, prepare and properly strategize.” I spoke again. “General Jerome will continue to train our troops and prep them for the impending battle”
Jerome bowed slightly in acknowledgement “Yes Alpha”
“Chief Garrett will triple up security. Every movement should be monitored. Nothing should take us unaware.“
“Yes, Alpha” Garrett bowed.
“If there's another body” I paused watching the eyes that watched me “we would be ready”
We needed just one person. And, whoever it was, was going to curse the day they were born.
XAVIERAFire roared through the night's sky, heating up the cold night. The large house before me spat flames, heavily clothed in thick black smoke. Heart wrenching screams could be heard from the house, filling it and overflowing through every outlet of the burning house. I tried to move, but my legs wouldn't obey. I was stuck—stuck in a way I couldn't decipher. Sweat trickled down my face as I fought to free my legs, loud screams from the house sent slithering chills down my spine.I shook like a leaf under the merciless assault of the wind. “Run! Run! Run!” The voices began to chant “Save yourself!” I was no coward, and I've never backed down on a fight, but I felt my body take up that command. Run! Escape!I tried, but my legs just wouldn't budge. While I struggled to flee as commanded, a figure emerged from the fire. It was in the form of a man, but his body was covered in an unending black smoke that wrapped around him in large circles, twirling continuously. His eyes blazed in
ALPHA RYKERThe Crescent ball ritual began today, and it was responsible for my bad mood. I stood before the large mirror in my room, covered in sweat and herbs. A white towel hung low around my waist. The combined smell of Marjoram, dill seeds and some other herbs swayed, circling the air around me, its juices dripping from my head down to my toes. How long was I going to do this shit?Eileen had said it was compulsory I did the mate finding ritual again this year, but she never said they intended to bathe me in some ‘herbal’ liquid. The burnt herbs and incense I could take, but being drenched in a mixture of herbs in hopes to attract a non-existent mate, was something I couldn't. “Then give them a Luna. Find your mate.” Caden's voice rang in my head.I hated the thought of this. Finding a mate when war was right at our doorsteps was nothing but misplaced priorities. I knew what was more important, and it was definitely not a mate. A rapt knock drew my attention to the door. I tur
XAVIERAThe sun radiated brightly above the lush meadow, and the calm breeze swept past us in a warm caress, encouraging the sweet smells of Gardenia flowers Mrs Barnes had planted around her cozy cafe to spread its exhilarating savor around. My hair was loosely wrapped in a messy bun, and I was dressed in a simple round-necked cream chiffon top with flower embroideries on the left breast, and a dark denim skirt and sandals. Somehow I found myself in Moonlit Cafe, with Adeline and Leesa, sharing lunch and unavoidable gossip. “Alpha Ryker is definitely getting a mate this year” Lessa popped, sipping from her glass of rosemary citrus spritzer.“And how do you know that?” Adeline queried between chewing on her burrito. “Erin” Lessa shrugged, placing her cup on the table.Erin was always filling her in on Palace gossip. Thanks to Erin, we knew his mistress didn't eat peas; had a special set of glasswares in the manor, and never ate with anything but those.“And how does Erin know?”“Duh
ALPHA RYKERMy only crime was chivalry. I stared at the large brown stain on my shirt, disliking the feel of the sticky liquid that had clung to my skin. I was having a break, and that woman of hair decided to ruin it. How could she be so careless, running around as though she was being chased? What If no one was there to prevent her fall? She was clumsy, weird and fragile. But, there was something about her though. Her eyes reminded me of emeralds. It wasn't my intention, but I couldn't help but notice everything about her features in that brief encounter. Besides the fact that she was quite beautiful, there was something about her I couldn't really place a finger on. Why did I feel like we've met before? “Calum?” I called on my driver for the day. He was one of the Zetas from Caden's special team. Caden made sure I went out with members of his team if he wasn't with me. Not that he'd ever leave my side without strict orders.“Yes, Alpha” Calum's brown eyes met mine through the re
9RykerThe woman beneath me shot her hips up once more, vibrating spasmodically. She moaned out, grabbing onto my shoulders, her nails dug into my skin. She rubbed her body against mine as I stroked her slowly. When she was calm again, I pulled out of her body, collapsing on the other side of the bed. She rolled to her side, cuddling up against my body. “You keep outdoing yourself, Ryker” she whispered against me, her voice sultrily breathless. “You keep track?” I smirked, kissing her hair. She smelled of Jasmine, and I liked the smell of it.“I can't even” she chuckled, pushing herself up so she stared at my face. “You're the best I've ever had, no caps” “And I intend to keep it that way” I kissed her lips, then detangled our bodies. “How do you intend to do that?” She asked me rolling on her stomach. My eyes narrowed at her question, she gave me an intense look. “What do you mean?” “You know what I mean, Ryker.”“Prior to what you think, I wasn't blessed with the gift of read
XavieraI found myself in the forest. Tall trees with dark green leaves, rich leaves, swaying under the merciless assault of the cold wind. I strolled through the intimidating bodies of wood, leaves and hooting owls, unsure of what I was searching for, or where I was going. Far ahead, there was a river, and even from this distance, I could tell it was still, and glistening. I headed towards the river, through the troubled forest. Aside from the waving leaves, tall trees, hooting owls and the occasional flapping of bird wings, I seemed to be alone. Or I thought I was. Sounds of howls tore through the air, and in a flash of light, two huge wolves ran past me, one on my left, and another on my right gunning for the river. I stood still, shocked at how they'd sped past, contemplating my next action. I went after them, as fast as my feet could take me. From the small distance between us, I saw them split, one took to the right, and the other to the left side of the river. By the time I
RykerMy heart pounded in their cages, expanding and contracting rapidly as my feet hit the ground, one after the other in a swift interchange my mind could barely keep up. They seemed to be on their own volition this morning, and somehow I embraced the idea. “Thirty seconds” Caden's voice slid through the earpods in my ear. I raced faster, blood pumping. I leapt over a log, then another and another, and five more. I hit the earth, perspiration dripping from every pore.“Twenty seconds” I caught sight of the Manor, I raced to it my eyes fixated on the gates. It was still locked from what I could tell, and I had less than fifteen seconds to reach the entrance of the manor. “Fifteen seconds. The gates will be…”I leapt, pushing myself up and for few seconds defied gravity on my own, over the spiky points of the gates and then I dropped down, over the the gate, landing on the gravelled floor, hands to the ground, and also immediately picked up the race. I took the steps two at a tim
XavieraI found myself in the forest. Two wolves ran past me, each on my side, heading to the glistening river that was before me. I ran after them until I reached what appeared to be the river bank. Lightning struck one of the trees behind me, and the forest was enveloped in flames. The still water before me erupted into troubled waves, powerful currents, clashing against each other, threatening to swallow me up, pushing me back to the fire that waited to consume me. By my left, one wolf stood and by my right, another, each headed for two different paths. Then one of the wolves turned, its eyes icy, and crystal, magnificent and magnetic. It turned away from me, running further into the path it stood. The other wolf was equally far gone. The fire and the waves roared concurrently, forcing me to make a quick decision. I followed the crystal eyed wolf, and the moment I took that path, I was transported into the past. Fire roared through the night's sky, warming the cold night. The hous
CadenThe days went by slowly, and Rueben's condition deteriorated rapidly. Ryker had reached out to Black Isle severally via faxes and letters—the lot had limited their use of technology for communication to fax and letters— yet, their response remained the same. He had to travel with the sick man if he needed their help, or they won't be attending to him. I drove through the busy honks of cars, Cyclists and chatters of a typical Crescent weekday afternoon, no immediate destination in mind. I had gotten off work quite early, and even if going home was my intention when I left the office, I had decided to drive around town.My thoughts dwelled on Ryker. After several deliberations, and the Black Isle's insistence, he decided to go with them. From what I had heard, Black Isle wasn't just a magical fortress with crystals and sapphire sprouting from its grounds, it was a sect of the most powerful medicine men. Medicine that might have found its way to Crescent via one of its people. E
RykerThe drive home with Caden was unusually quiet. I had expected him to bother me with a barrage of questions the moment the car got in motion, considering how watchful he'd been throughout the evening. However, he remained quiet, eyes on the road as we drove back to Crescent Valley. I guess we were both in our feelings. I didn't even know what I was thinking tonight. First of all, the stroll wasn't even part of the plan. I intended to get in, hand her Eileen's flowers, and leave. I wasn't expecting that many people at her house. I wasn't expecting a lot of things. I hadn't expected my body to react to her the way it did the moment I touched her, the strong urge to kiss her had never been in my thoughts until that very moment. And it had become quite persistent after that. I was surely going crazy. But then she had wanted it. I knew she equally wanted to be kissed, and this somehow gave me the consolation that whatever this drive was, I wasn't alone. There was an attraction. Tha
XavieraI didn't know which of this evening's incident was the most weird; The fact that the Alpha had joined in our little cookout gathering, or that I was actually walking the neighbourhood with him in dead silence. After he had asked me to join him for a walk, my first instinct was to decline in the most politest of manners, but saying No was a bit harder than it was meant to be. Also, we were in the midst of unsolicited blog indirect sources, the last thing I needed was my picture appearing with the most ridiculous captions this week. So, I had agreed. Another thing was that I could really use some time away from the choking scrutiny of these elderly women, and my friends who seemed torn between adoration for the Alpha and the awkwardness and tension that was so rigid the air could break into visible shards. As we stepped through the back gate, I noticed the neighborhood was unnecessarily noisy and crowded. People sat on their porches, and the moment they caught sight of the
CadenWhatever Elder Lowell and my mother had told Caden the day before was enough to kick his ass into action, and make an attempt to rectify things with his mate, Xaviera. I wouldn't say this was entirely a good news for me, my feelings haven't really settled on one thing. I felt different things—mixed feelings, towards their impending make up. However, one thing transcended my feelings—my loyalty to Ryker, and the pack. I could never do anything to hurt him. Nothing. And so even if I felt a growing connection with the woman that was supposed to be his mate, I had shelved it because it my loyalty to Ryker demanded I respected his boundaries. And that was why when he said we were going to check on his mate, I had easily agreed to drive him there. When my mother had heard, she had disappeared into the garden, and just as we were about driving out of the Mansion's grounds, she'd stopped us, a bouquet of flowers in her hands. “Now what is she up to?” Ryker sighed, rubbing his temple
XavieraThe rest of the week was not without the constant reminder that my life had changed. The whispers had morphed into smiles and small bows, and then suspicious whispers. I overheard two women discussing one time, the possibility of the Alpha marrying his girlfriend, instead of his mate. Another time, two women were comparing myself and his current girlfriend. They said she was more classy, and elegant. Some had said she was more regal, a Crescent she-wolf and was the best fit for Luna, so they didn't know why the goddess picked me. One woman had even described me as a ‘pick-me’ girl. The gossips were becoming quite unbearable, and I didn't know why it affected me. I hadn't always bothered how people thought of me, attractive or not. One time, I was the stunning moon in my pack. If preferences were different, I didn't really mind. I was done with all the attention of my previous life. Also, Alpha Ryker could sleep with the whole town if he so wished, it was none of my busines
RykerIn the past three days, we had exerted energy and resources on reviving Rueben, however the attempts all proved futile. He consistently slipped in and out of consciousness. And even when he was conscious for a few minutes, it didn't do much, as he could barely articulate anything. Each Salutary could barely detect the exact spell that was cast upon the posion, and the knife, and the laboratory Anna had sent the blood samples to had been unable to detect all the components combined to make this one. Potion He was always sedated to prevent those spasmodic reactions, and had to undergo series of rituals to keep the poison from destroying important organs in his body. The toxins had settled on eating the flesh within the wounds. And the Salutaris had used fire and coal to reduce how much of him the poison ate away. We were running out of time, and although I hadn't been awarded the opportunity to challenge it, Black Isle pack was the only option we had at the moment. I didn't want
CadenI had a bad feeling about Ryker leaving for Littlemoon last night. It was not that I didn't believe him capable, or trust his ability to win a war. But, I always worried. Ryker was quite selfless, and would lay down his life for his people. It was both a blessing and curse, more of a curse to me.This worry had kept me awake, burning through several quantities of caffeinated beverages. When Calum had called me, informing me about several helicopters, and trucks leaving the pack en route to Littlemoon, my worry skyrocketed. I paced about the heavily guarded mansion. I had tried reaching Ryker, but for some reason I wasn't able to get hold of him. Then I reached out to Reid, and just like Ryker, his line was not reachable either. After several attempts at other people who could be close to Ryker, and no success, I become restless. The feeling that something might have happened to Ryker was enough to send me into full panic mode. So, I dialled Jerome. He sounded still, yet alert.
Ryker“You did what?!” I thundered, my anger swift.“It's just a little time before she'll start facing harrasment. I had your interest at heart” he defended. “My interest?” What the fuck? He went behind by back, orchestrated a full security team and plan without my permission, and then returns to tell me he did it for me. “She is your mate, so yes” he stood his ground. “Talk about double standards!" I turned away from him as I secured my ballistic vest. “ Didn't it occur to you that Lauren deserved a security team too?” I asked him. His eyes hardened at this. He disliked her, and he didn't even bother to shield it anymore. “Alpha, with all due respect, Lauren is a mistress. That is what the pack knows her to be. Xaviera is your mate, and Luna to be” “A mate I do not want!” I spat angrily. It was infuriating how no one could understand how annoying this whole situation was. There was a woman I had invested two years into a relationship with, and had indirectly hinted at a possibl
XavieraFrom the moment I ran into the Alpha last night, I knew the balance I was beginning to find again would tilt. Ever since the incident that sent me far away from home occurred years back, I had avoided the spotlight as much as I could. I hated bringing attention to myself. This world was quite a small place, and the pack responsible for the trouble I was in were alive and lurking, even if I didn't know who they really were. The Crescent moon which had become my respite, and shield from my burdensome past had now placed me in the very position I had tried to avoid. The moment I got home last night, I had quickly gotten out of my dress, freshened up and had settled for Mac and cheese. Anna had come in much later, and I had pretended to be asleep when she came to my room. Adeline and Leesa had rang me non stop until I decided to switch off my phone. Much later, I overheard Anna informing them I was fine and asleep. Last night was too much to take in all at once, and I needed the n
