XAVIERA
Fire roared through the night's sky, heating up the cold night. The large house before me spat flames, heavily clothed in thick black smoke. Heart wrenching screams could be heard from the house, filling it and overflowing through every outlet of the burning house. I tried to move, but my legs wouldn't obey. I was stuck—stuck in a way I couldn't decipher. Sweat trickled down my face as I fought to free my legs, loud screams from the house sent slithering chills down my spine.
I shook like a leaf under the merciless assault of the wind. “Run! Run! Run!” The voices began to chant “Save yourself!” I was no coward, and I've never backed down on a fight, but I felt my body take up that command.
Run! Escape!
I tried, but my legs just wouldn't budge.
While I struggled to flee as commanded, a figure emerged from the fire. It was in the form of a man, but his body was covered in an unending black smoke that wrapped around him in large circles, twirling continuously. His eyes blazed in uniformity to the flames that burned the house and its occupants. In his right hand, he held a limp body by the neckline of its clothes, dragging the body along as he trudged towards me.
He advanced until he was just a few metres away from me, then he dropped the body, his nostrils snorting out gases. I struggled to make out any significant features, but all I got were shadows. The body moved slightly, raising its head slowly. My heart dropped to my stomach as I recognised the person that was held captive.
God no!
“Xaviera" He groaned, blood spluttering from his mouth. The smoky shadow raised his sword.
No! No! No!
"Please don't!" I screamed.
Slurrp! In a powerful cut, he decapitated the head from his body. Blood gushed from the neck splattering about in a spray of death, moist and red. Suddenly, I felt my limbs loose, and my first thought was to lurch at the murderous creature before me, but before I could, four hands; two on each side of my arms, clamped around me in restraint, pressing me to the earth.
The Smoky being kicked the head forward so it rolled to where I knelt. The head turned to me, life still in it, then the eyes fluttered open, and began to blink rapidly.
“Run, Xaviera. Run!" It whispered eerily, I felt my heart stop momentarily. Slowly the lips curled into a sinister smirk.
What the—
“Run!” it thundered.
A deafening shrill erupted from behind me, jutting me up suddenly, my eyes tore open as reality came crashing through the roof. I was covered in sweat, and my heart raced erratically. I rested against the headboard of my bed, struggling to calm my racing pulse.
I turned on my bedside lamp, trying to make sense of what I had just seen as several thoughts clouded my already hazy mind. It wasn't the first time I dreamt about our burning house and gut wrenching screams of my family, but this was the first time anything emerged from the smoke. It was the first time he was slain before my eyes—the first time his head was actually severed.
Although, this time it was quite different. In reality, I had seen the sword take a swipe at him, I had seen him fall. I saw him being murdered, then I watched those monsters drag his body away after he had breathed his last. But his head was intact.
The digital clock beside my bed began to blink, 6:30am the blinking lights indicated. I threw the sheets off my feet, wringing them to confirm they still had life in them, they wringed just fine.
Letting out a sigh of relief, I swung both legs, the floor creaked slightly underneath me. Struggling to push away the memories of that accursed night, I made for the kitchen.
It had been six years since the unfortunate event at Red Moon and all I had were fragments of the memory of it, mostly about what happened before. I couldn't shake off the fact that something had actually emerged from that smoke. That I was beginning to get an inkling of who the enemy was, what he looked like.
The house was quiet, Anna didn't return home last night. I was grateful she wasn't home to witness another of my early morning fits. She'd seen enough of it since I moved in with her. I was halfway to the cabinet when I slipped, and fell hard on my ass. The impact knocked the air out of my lungs, I gasped for breath.
"Fuck!" The room swirled, and noisy tweets drummed in my head. Luckily, my tailbone wasn't affected, or I might have been howling on the floor.
When was the last time you fell this hard?
You tell me.
Oh, I will. After the attack. One minute you were a Delta, fast approaching the beta rank, and the next you were racing into another pack naked, now an Omega.
Talk about epic falls.
Lunch rush at Moondrops was hell, and my feet were a testament to that fact. The last of our afternoon lunch rush customers had just exited the restaurant, a group of noisy teenagers with the most clamorous laughter
I sighed at the peace their absence brought, three to four customers sat scattered around the restaurant. I grabbed several trays, neatly stacking them on the trolley. My break was in five minutes, but before that, I had to deliver these glasswares to Milligan.
I pushed the stocked trolley, traipsing to Milligan and his stack of dirty kitchen wares. He released a resigned sigh at the sight of the trolley, his curly hair thick like a cotton upon his head.
“Tell me this is the last of them”
“It is the last of them,” I replied with a smile.
“There is a God!” He exclaimed. I chuckled at this. It was basically his first rush hour shift. He had never washed so many plates in one shift. Moondrops seemed to buzz during afternoon rush hours and the evenings . The food was exquisite, the designs were comely, it simply beckoned on you, and they did come—with tall orders.
“My shift is almost over. I'll just take out the trash” I informed him, then turned to the trash can that was filled to the brim.
“I will be here till dusk. Took two shifts” Milligan said “Extra cash and all. Now I regret it”
I laughed at this. “You'd forget it once you feel the weight of your paycheck” I lifted the bag out of the can, then wrapped it. The weight pulled at my shoulders. “Woah! This shit is quite heavy”
“Need help?” He said over his shoulders.
“Nah. I'm good. Thank you” I lifted the heavy bag, taking it outside. The afternoon weather was calm and a bit dull.
The moment I dropped the trash into the dump, a swooshing sound swept past me, causing a cold to slither down my spine. I felt the hairs on my body rise, a prickling sensation shot up to the back of my neck. The air around me chilled suddenly. Storm rose to this, growling within.
What's going on?
Someone is here
A scent I couldn't really fathom caught my attention. I turned from the dump, searching for the source of my discomfort. Slowly my gaze lifted as though summoned, resting upon a figure that stood a few meters away from me. It stood still, watching me.
It was so dark even in the afternoon sun, plastered like a shadow against the wall. There was something about it that I couldn't just ignore. It seemed to beckon on me. The prickling sensation around my neck heightened, pulling at my senses.
“Hello?” I called, taking a step towards it.
Nothing. Not even a budge. It just stood there, watching me approach it, slowly disperse.
Go back, Xaviera!
“Do you need something?” I called again, ignoring Storm. The closer I got, the more distorted it became. My vision began to blur as I tried to focus on what it was I was really seeing.
“Xaviera!”
I jumped as though pulled out of a trance. I turned to the direction my name was called. Adeline stood at the backdoor of the restaurant, staring at me weirdly. “Where are you going?” she asked, her left brow curved in question.
I turned to the direction I was headed a few seconds ago. The figure was no longer there. I felt my brows wing in confusion.
Strange.
“I thought I saw someone,” I muttered.
Someone was definitely there.
“What?” She asked.
“Nothing” I said, going to meet her.
“You good?” She asked, watching me curiously. I nodded, brushing off the feeling. My mind must be playing tricks on me.
It wasn't.
Stress then. That must be it. I barely slept these days.
“Leesa is waiting for us” She said, walking back into the kitchen. I nodded, then made to join her when the pricking sensation shot through my neck again. Storm growled. I turned back, and there it was, like it never left—the figure.
Hey there! Thanks for reading THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE. Sorry about the long wait. Updates will come in more frequently this month, please don't forget to follow, vote and leave comments!
ALPHA RYKERThe Crescent ball ritual began today, and it was responsible for my bad mood. I stood before the large mirror in my room, covered in sweat and herbs. A white towel hung low around my waist. The combined smell of Marjoram, dill seeds and some other herbs swayed, circling the air around me, its juices dripping from my head down to my toes. How long was I going to do this shit?Eileen had said it was compulsory I did the mate finding ritual again this year, but she never said they intended to bathe me in some ‘herbal’ liquid. The burnt herbs and incense I could take, but being drenched in a mixture of herbs in hopes to attract a non-existent mate, was something I couldn't. “Then give them a Luna. Find your mate.” Caden's voice rang in my head.I hated the thought of this. Finding a mate when war was right at our doorsteps was nothing but misplaced priorities. I knew what was more important, and it was definitely not a mate. A rapt knock drew my attention to the door. I tur
XAVIERAThe sun radiated brightly above the lush meadow, and the calm breeze swept past us in a warm caress, encouraging the sweet smells of Gardenia flowers Mrs Barnes had planted around her cozy cafe to spread its exhilarating savor around. My hair was loosely wrapped in a messy bun, and I was dressed in a simple round-necked cream chiffon top with flower embroideries on the left breast, and a dark denim skirt and sandals. Somehow I found myself in Moonlit Cafe, with Adeline and Leesa, sharing lunch and unavoidable gossip. “Alpha Ryker is definitely getting a mate this year” Lessa popped, sipping from her glass of rosemary citrus spritzer.“And how do you know that?” Adeline queried between chewing on her burrito. “Erin” Lessa shrugged, placing her cup on the table.Erin was always filling her in on Palace gossip. Thanks to Erin, we knew his mistress didn't eat peas; had a special set of glasswares in the manor, and never ate with anything but those.“And how does Erin know?”“Duh
ALPHA RYKERMy only crime was chivalry. I stared at the large brown stain on my shirt, disliking the feel of the sticky liquid that had clung to my skin. I was having a break, and that woman of hair decided to ruin it. How could she be so careless, running around as though she was being chased? What If no one was there to prevent her fall? She was clumsy, weird and fragile. But, there was something about her though. Her eyes reminded me of emeralds. It wasn't my intention, but I couldn't help but notice everything about her features in that brief encounter. Besides the fact that she was quite beautiful, there was something about her I couldn't really place a finger on. Why did I feel like we've met before? “Calum?” I called on my driver for the day. He was one of the Zetas from Caden's special team. Caden made sure I went out with members of his team if he wasn't with me. Not that he'd ever leave my side without strict orders.“Yes, Alpha” Calum's brown eyes met mine through the re
9RykerThe woman beneath me shot her hips up once more, vibrating spasmodically. She moaned out, grabbing onto my shoulders, her nails dug into my skin. She rubbed her body against mine as I stroked her slowly. When she was calm again, I pulled out of her body, collapsing on the other side of the bed. She rolled to her side, cuddling up against my body. “You keep outdoing yourself, Ryker” she whispered against me, her voice sultrily breathless. “You keep track?” I smirked, kissing her hair. She smelled of Jasmine, and I liked the smell of it.“I can't even” she chuckled, pushing herself up so she stared at my face. “You're the best I've ever had, no caps” “And I intend to keep it that way” I kissed her lips, then detangled our bodies. “How do you intend to do that?” She asked me rolling on her stomach. My eyes narrowed at her question, she gave me an intense look. “What do you mean?” “You know what I mean, Ryker.”“Prior to what you think, I wasn't blessed with the gift of read
XavieraI found myself in the forest. Tall trees with dark green leaves, rich leaves, swaying under the merciless assault of the cold wind. I strolled through the intimidating bodies of wood, leaves and hooting owls, unsure of what I was searching for, or where I was going. Far ahead, there was a river, and even from this distance, I could tell it was still, and glistening. I headed towards the river, through the troubled forest. Aside from the waving leaves, tall trees, hooting owls and the occasional flapping of bird wings, I seemed to be alone. Or I thought I was. Sounds of howls tore through the air, and in a flash of light, two huge wolves ran past me, one on my left, and another on my right gunning for the river. I stood still, shocked at how they'd sped past, contemplating my next action. I went after them, as fast as my feet could take me. From the small distance between us, I saw them split, one took to the right, and the other to the left side of the river. By the time I
RykerMy heart pounded in their cages, expanding and contracting rapidly as my feet hit the ground, one after the other in a swift interchange my mind could barely keep up. They seemed to be on their own volition this morning, and somehow I embraced the idea. “Thirty seconds” Caden's voice slid through the earpods in my ear. I raced faster, blood pumping. I leapt over a log, then another and another, and five more. I hit the earth, perspiration dripping from every pore.“Twenty seconds” I caught sight of the Manor, I raced to it my eyes fixated on the gates. It was still locked from what I could tell, and I had less than fifteen seconds to reach the entrance of the manor. “Fifteen seconds. The gates will be…”I leapt, pushing myself up and for few seconds defied gravity on my own, over the spiky points of the gates and then I dropped down, over the the gate, landing on the gravelled floor, hands to the ground, and also immediately picked up the race. I took the steps two at a tim
XavieraI found myself in the forest. Two wolves ran past me, each on my side, heading to the glistening river that was before me. I ran after them until I reached what appeared to be the river bank. Lightning struck one of the trees behind me, and the forest was enveloped in flames. The still water before me erupted into troubled waves, powerful currents, clashing against each other, threatening to swallow me up, pushing me back to the fire that waited to consume me. By my left, one wolf stood and by my right, another, each headed for two different paths. Then one of the wolves turned, its eyes icy, and crystal, magnificent and magnetic. It turned away from me, running further into the path it stood. The other wolf was equally far gone. The fire and the waves roared concurrently, forcing me to make a quick decision. I followed the crystal eyed wolf, and the moment I took that path, I was transported into the past. Fire roared through the night's sky, warming the cold night. The hous
13CadenBeing Beta meant I ruled next to Ryker. I served him as my Alpha, honoured him as my defender, defended him like a guardian and loved him as a brother. For me, Ryker was a priority. His safety was my concern. My mother had brought a blue eyed boy with the most defiant look I'd even seen one fateful Sunday afternoon. One look at him, and I'd decided this was a forever ship. Our bond had grown over the years, and when he became Alpha, becoming his beta was automatic. Ryker would say he trusted no one more, and I never gave him a reason not to. Our bond transcended duty, and being by his side became a reflex. The happenings of the past two weeks had reshaped and altered a lot of plans, setting us on a different course. Last month, we were all thinking of how magical the Crescent ball for this year would look like. No one in Crescent joked with the Crescent ball, not even Ryker with all his skepticism. The Crescent ball drew a lot of attention, and was always honoured by high
CadenThe days went by slowly, and Rueben's condition deteriorated rapidly. Ryker had reached out to Black Isle severally via faxes and letters—the lot had limited their use of technology for communication to fax and letters— yet, their response remained the same. He had to travel with the sick man if he needed their help, or they won't be attending to him. I drove through the busy honks of cars, Cyclists and chatters of a typical Crescent weekday afternoon, no immediate destination in mind. I had gotten off work quite early, and even if going home was my intention when I left the office, I had decided to drive around town.My thoughts dwelled on Ryker. After several deliberations, and the Black Isle's insistence, he decided to go with them. From what I had heard, Black Isle wasn't just a magical fortress with crystals and sapphire sprouting from its grounds, it was a sect of the most powerful medicine men. Medicine that might have found its way to Crescent via one of its people. E
RykerThe drive home with Caden was unusually quiet. I had expected him to bother me with a barrage of questions the moment the car got in motion, considering how watchful he'd been throughout the evening. However, he remained quiet, eyes on the road as we drove back to Crescent Valley. I guess we were both in our feelings. I didn't even know what I was thinking tonight. First of all, the stroll wasn't even part of the plan. I intended to get in, hand her Eileen's flowers, and leave. I wasn't expecting that many people at her house. I wasn't expecting a lot of things. I hadn't expected my body to react to her the way it did the moment I touched her, the strong urge to kiss her had never been in my thoughts until that very moment. And it had become quite persistent after that. I was surely going crazy. But then she had wanted it. I knew she equally wanted to be kissed, and this somehow gave me the consolation that whatever this drive was, I wasn't alone. There was an attraction. Tha
XavieraI didn't know which of this evening's incident was the most weird; The fact that the Alpha had joined in our little cookout gathering, or that I was actually walking the neighbourhood with him in dead silence. After he had asked me to join him for a walk, my first instinct was to decline in the most politest of manners, but saying No was a bit harder than it was meant to be. Also, we were in the midst of unsolicited blog indirect sources, the last thing I needed was my picture appearing with the most ridiculous captions this week. So, I had agreed. Another thing was that I could really use some time away from the choking scrutiny of these elderly women, and my friends who seemed torn between adoration for the Alpha and the awkwardness and tension that was so rigid the air could break into visible shards. As we stepped through the back gate, I noticed the neighborhood was unnecessarily noisy and crowded. People sat on their porches, and the moment they caught sight of the
CadenWhatever Elder Lowell and my mother had told Caden the day before was enough to kick his ass into action, and make an attempt to rectify things with his mate, Xaviera. I wouldn't say this was entirely a good news for me, my feelings haven't really settled on one thing. I felt different things—mixed feelings, towards their impending make up. However, one thing transcended my feelings—my loyalty to Ryker, and the pack. I could never do anything to hurt him. Nothing. And so even if I felt a growing connection with the woman that was supposed to be his mate, I had shelved it because it my loyalty to Ryker demanded I respected his boundaries. And that was why when he said we were going to check on his mate, I had easily agreed to drive him there. When my mother had heard, she had disappeared into the garden, and just as we were about driving out of the Mansion's grounds, she'd stopped us, a bouquet of flowers in her hands. “Now what is she up to?” Ryker sighed, rubbing his temple
XavieraThe rest of the week was not without the constant reminder that my life had changed. The whispers had morphed into smiles and small bows, and then suspicious whispers. I overheard two women discussing one time, the possibility of the Alpha marrying his girlfriend, instead of his mate. Another time, two women were comparing myself and his current girlfriend. They said she was more classy, and elegant. Some had said she was more regal, a Crescent she-wolf and was the best fit for Luna, so they didn't know why the goddess picked me. One woman had even described me as a ‘pick-me’ girl. The gossips were becoming quite unbearable, and I didn't know why it affected me. I hadn't always bothered how people thought of me, attractive or not. One time, I was the stunning moon in my pack. If preferences were different, I didn't really mind. I was done with all the attention of my previous life. Also, Alpha Ryker could sleep with the whole town if he so wished, it was none of my busines
RykerIn the past three days, we had exerted energy and resources on reviving Rueben, however the attempts all proved futile. He consistently slipped in and out of consciousness. And even when he was conscious for a few minutes, it didn't do much, as he could barely articulate anything. Each Salutary could barely detect the exact spell that was cast upon the posion, and the knife, and the laboratory Anna had sent the blood samples to had been unable to detect all the components combined to make this one. Potion He was always sedated to prevent those spasmodic reactions, and had to undergo series of rituals to keep the poison from destroying important organs in his body. The toxins had settled on eating the flesh within the wounds. And the Salutaris had used fire and coal to reduce how much of him the poison ate away. We were running out of time, and although I hadn't been awarded the opportunity to challenge it, Black Isle pack was the only option we had at the moment. I didn't want
CadenI had a bad feeling about Ryker leaving for Littlemoon last night. It was not that I didn't believe him capable, or trust his ability to win a war. But, I always worried. Ryker was quite selfless, and would lay down his life for his people. It was both a blessing and curse, more of a curse to me.This worry had kept me awake, burning through several quantities of caffeinated beverages. When Calum had called me, informing me about several helicopters, and trucks leaving the pack en route to Littlemoon, my worry skyrocketed. I paced about the heavily guarded mansion. I had tried reaching Ryker, but for some reason I wasn't able to get hold of him. Then I reached out to Reid, and just like Ryker, his line was not reachable either. After several attempts at other people who could be close to Ryker, and no success, I become restless. The feeling that something might have happened to Ryker was enough to send me into full panic mode. So, I dialled Jerome. He sounded still, yet alert.
Ryker“You did what?!” I thundered, my anger swift.“It's just a little time before she'll start facing harrasment. I had your interest at heart” he defended. “My interest?” What the fuck? He went behind by back, orchestrated a full security team and plan without my permission, and then returns to tell me he did it for me. “She is your mate, so yes” he stood his ground. “Talk about double standards!" I turned away from him as I secured my ballistic vest. “ Didn't it occur to you that Lauren deserved a security team too?” I asked him. His eyes hardened at this. He disliked her, and he didn't even bother to shield it anymore. “Alpha, with all due respect, Lauren is a mistress. That is what the pack knows her to be. Xaviera is your mate, and Luna to be” “A mate I do not want!” I spat angrily. It was infuriating how no one could understand how annoying this whole situation was. There was a woman I had invested two years into a relationship with, and had indirectly hinted at a possibl
XavieraFrom the moment I ran into the Alpha last night, I knew the balance I was beginning to find again would tilt. Ever since the incident that sent me far away from home occurred years back, I had avoided the spotlight as much as I could. I hated bringing attention to myself. This world was quite a small place, and the pack responsible for the trouble I was in were alive and lurking, even if I didn't know who they really were. The Crescent moon which had become my respite, and shield from my burdensome past had now placed me in the very position I had tried to avoid. The moment I got home last night, I had quickly gotten out of my dress, freshened up and had settled for Mac and cheese. Anna had come in much later, and I had pretended to be asleep when she came to my room. Adeline and Leesa had rang me non stop until I decided to switch off my phone. Much later, I overheard Anna informing them I was fine and asleep. Last night was too much to take in all at once, and I needed the n
