ALPHA RYKER

My only crime was chivalry.

I stared at the large brown stain on my shirt, disliking the feel of the sticky liquid that had clung to my skin. I was having a break, and that woman of hair decided to ruin it. How could she be so careless, running around as though she was being chased? What If no one was there to prevent her fall?

She was clumsy, weird and fragile. But, there was something about her though. Her eyes reminded me of emeralds. It wasn't my intention, but I couldn't help but notice everything about her features in that brief encounter. Besides the fact that she was quite beautiful, there was something about her I couldn't really place a finger on.

Why did I feel like we've met before?

“Calum?” I called on my driver for the day. He was one of the Zetas from Caden's special team. Caden made sure I went out with members of his team if he wasn't with me. Not that he'd ever leave my side without strict orders.

“Yes, Alpha” Calum's brown eyes met mine through the re

9RykerThe woman beneath me shot her hips up once more, vibrating spasmodically. She moaned out, grabbing onto my shoulders, her nails dug into my skin. She rubbed her body against mine as I stroked her slowly. When she was calm again, I pulled out of her body, collapsing on the other side of the bed. She rolled to her side, cuddling up against my body. “You keep outdoing yourself, Ryker” she whispered against me, her voice sultrily breathless. “You keep track?” I smirked, kissing her hair. She smelled of Jasmine, and I liked the smell of it.“I can't even” she chuckled, pushing herself up so she stared at my face. “You're the best I've ever had, no caps” “And I intend to keep it that way” I kissed her lips, then detangled our bodies. “How do you intend to do that?” She asked me rolling on her stomach. My eyes narrowed at her question, she gave me an intense look. “What do you mean?” “You know what I mean, Ryker.”“Prior to what you think, I wasn't blessed with the gift of read

XavieraI found myself in the forest. Tall trees with dark green leaves, rich leaves, swaying under the merciless assault of the cold wind. I strolled through the intimidating bodies of wood, leaves and hooting owls, unsure of what I was searching for, or where I was going. Far ahead, there was a river, and even from this distance, I could tell it was still, and glistening. I headed towards the river, through the troubled forest. Aside from the waving leaves, tall trees, hooting owls and the occasional flapping of bird wings, I seemed to be alone. Or I thought I was. Sounds of howls tore through the air, and in a flash of light, two huge wolves ran past me, one on my left, and another on my right gunning for the river. I stood still, shocked at how they'd sped past, contemplating my next action. I went after them, as fast as my feet could take me. From the small distance between us, I saw them split, one took to the right, and the other to the left side of the river. By the time I

RykerMy heart pounded in their cages, expanding and contracting rapidly as my feet hit the ground, one after the other in a swift interchange my mind could barely keep up. They seemed to be on their own volition this morning, and somehow I embraced the idea. “Thirty seconds” Caden's voice slid through the earpods in my ear. I raced faster, blood pumping. I leapt over a log, then another and another, and five more. I hit the earth, perspiration dripping from every pore.“Twenty seconds” I caught sight of the Manor, I raced to it my eyes fixated on the gates. It was still locked from what I could tell, and I had less than fifteen seconds to reach the entrance of the manor. “Fifteen seconds. The gates will be…”I leapt, pushing myself up and for few seconds defied gravity on my own, over the spiky points of the gates and then I dropped down, over the the gate, landing on the gravelled floor, hands to the ground, and also immediately picked up the race. I took the steps two at a tim

XavieraI found myself in the forest. Two wolves ran past me, each on my side, heading to the glistening river that was before me. I ran after them until I reached what appeared to be the river bank. Lightning struck one of the trees behind me, and the forest was enveloped in flames. The still water before me erupted into troubled waves, powerful currents, clashing against each other, threatening to swallow me up, pushing me back to the fire that waited to consume me. By my left, one wolf stood and by my right, another, each headed for two different paths. Then one of the wolves turned, its eyes icy, and crystal, magnificent and magnetic. It turned away from me, running further into the path it stood. The other wolf was equally far gone. The fire and the waves roared concurrently, forcing me to make a quick decision. I followed the crystal eyed wolf, and the moment I took that path, I was transported into the past. Fire roared through the night's sky, warming the cold night. The hous

13CadenBeing Beta meant I ruled next to Ryker. I served him as my Alpha, honoured him as my defender, defended him like a guardian and loved him as a brother. For me, Ryker was a priority. His safety was my concern. My mother had brought a blue eyed boy with the most defiant look I'd even seen one fateful Sunday afternoon. One look at him, and I'd decided this was a forever ship. Our bond had grown over the years, and when he became Alpha, becoming his beta was automatic. Ryker would say he trusted no one more, and I never gave him a reason not to. Our bond transcended duty, and being by his side became a reflex. The happenings of the past two weeks had reshaped and altered a lot of plans, setting us on a different course. Last month, we were all thinking of how magical the Crescent ball for this year would look like. No one in Crescent joked with the Crescent ball, not even Ryker with all his skepticism. The Crescent ball drew a lot of attention, and was always honoured by high

Xaviera(PT 1)The sound of horn pierced through the night sky for the second time tonight. Party was over. I ran as fast as my feet could take me. My heart beat was erratic, threatening to burst out of its encasement.“Vie, wait!” Adeline called after me, hot on my trail. I ran till I hit the tarred road, out of the woods, and further till I reached the spot we had shifted. I ran into one of the stalls shifting immediately. It was only then I realised I didn't bring in extra clothes. “Shit!”Adeline ran into the store. “Vie?” She called. “In here” I replied aloud. “Naked” I muttered. I heard another stall open and close. An eternity later, after several stores had opened and closed, Adeline knocked on my stall door.“Vie?” She called. I unlocked the door, poking my head out. “Here” she handed me some clothes.“Thanks” I stretched taking them, then proceeded to wear them. She brought me black sweatpants, a white tank top and black sneakers with white soles. The clothes looked new,

XAVIERAcontinued from the previous chapterWe ended up at a taco stand on the farthest side of the park. Leesa had gone to get us drinks cause the taco stand was out of Sodas, and Adeline had gone to say hello to her mother's friends just few metres from the stand. By the time I was done with our order, Adeline was nowhere to be found. I went searching for her, through the small crowd that was split into various tiny groups. The moon was very much above us, and its light offered enough illumination amidst the artificial lights of the park and street lamps. The park was a lot more livelier than it had been before, as almost everyone had shifted. Many had found their mates, and where all locked and loved up, building foundations of their newly found relationships by getting to know eachother more, some better and creating memories. I couldn't help the nostalgic feeling that hit me as the atmosphere easily shifted. Lovebirds in every nest had me remembering the time I had found my o

  • THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE    CHAPTER SIXTEEN

CadenI have always masked my feelings, because I hated for anyone to access my thoughts or guess my moves. I could mask anger, irritation, hate, distaste—if I wanted to. However, what I couldn't really mask was desire or lust, or whatever it was that Xaviera evoked in me anytime we were within close proximity. From the first day she'd taken to her heels, to the day we ended up doing dishes in the Kitchen, she had been a person of interest. Whatever it was I felt hadn't developed into something I wanted to name, not yet. But, I have never felt the urge to have a woman in my arms as much as I did her tonight. The mad drive to sample those beautiful lips, have those eyes drink me in as I explored each part of her mouth, our positions notwithstanding, was something I had never experienced. Even as I drove back to the Manor, I couldn't stop thinking of how luxuriant her hair was, how her eyes twinkled beneath the moon light, and how much I wanted to trace the beautiful outline of her fac

  • THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE    CHAPTER THIRTY ONE

CadenThe days went by slowly, and Rueben's condition deteriorated rapidly. Ryker had reached out to Black Isle severally via faxes and letters—the lot had limited their use of technology for communication to fax and letters— yet, their response remained the same. He had to travel with the sick man if he needed their help, or they won't be attending to him. I drove through the busy honks of cars, Cyclists and chatters of a typical Crescent weekday afternoon, no immediate destination in mind. I had gotten off work quite early, and even if going home was my intention when I left the office, I had decided to drive around town.My thoughts dwelled on Ryker. After several deliberations, and the Black Isle's insistence, he decided to go with them. From what I had heard, Black Isle wasn't just a magical fortress with crystals and sapphire sprouting from its grounds, it was a sect of the most powerful medicine men. Medicine that might have found its way to Crescent via one of its people. E

  • THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE    CHAPTER THIRTY ONE

RykerThe drive home with Caden was unusually quiet. I had expected him to bother me with a barrage of questions the moment the car got in motion, considering how watchful he'd been throughout the evening. However, he remained quiet, eyes on the road as we drove back to Crescent Valley. I guess we were both in our feelings. I didn't even know what I was thinking tonight. First of all, the stroll wasn't even part of the plan. I intended to get in, hand her Eileen's flowers, and leave. I wasn't expecting that many people at her house. I wasn't expecting a lot of things. I hadn't expected my body to react to her the way it did the moment I touched her, the strong urge to kiss her had never been in my thoughts until that very moment. And it had become quite persistent after that. I was surely going crazy. But then she had wanted it. I knew she equally wanted to be kissed, and this somehow gave me the consolation that whatever this drive was, I wasn't alone. There was an attraction. Tha

  • THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE    CHAPTER THIRTY

XavieraI didn't know which of this evening's incident was the most weird; The fact that the Alpha had joined in our little cookout gathering, or that I was actually walking the neighbourhood with him in dead silence. After he had asked me to join him for a walk, my first instinct was to decline in the most politest of manners, but saying No was a bit harder than it was meant to be. Also, we were in the midst of unsolicited blog indirect sources, the last thing I needed was my picture appearing with the most ridiculous captions this week. So, I had agreed. Another thing was that I could really use some time away from the choking scrutiny of these elderly women, and my friends who seemed torn between adoration for the Alpha and the awkwardness and tension that was so rigid the air could break into visible shards. As we stepped through the back gate, I noticed the neighborhood was unnecessarily noisy and crowded. People sat on their porches, and the moment they caught sight of the

  • THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE    CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

CadenWhatever Elder Lowell and my mother had told Caden the day before was enough to kick his ass into action, and make an attempt to rectify things with his mate, Xaviera. I wouldn't say this was entirely a good news for me, my feelings haven't really settled on one thing. I felt different things—mixed feelings, towards their impending make up. However, one thing transcended my feelings—my loyalty to Ryker, and the pack. I could never do anything to hurt him. Nothing. And so even if I felt a growing connection with the woman that was supposed to be his mate, I had shelved it because it my loyalty to Ryker demanded I respected his boundaries. And that was why when he said we were going to check on his mate, I had easily agreed to drive him there. When my mother had heard, she had disappeared into the garden, and just as we were about driving out of the Mansion's grounds, she'd stopped us, a bouquet of flowers in her hands. “Now what is she up to?” Ryker sighed, rubbing his temple

  • THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE    CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

XavieraThe rest of the week was not without the constant reminder that my life had changed. The whispers had morphed into smiles and small bows, and then suspicious whispers. I overheard two women discussing one time, the possibility of the Alpha marrying his girlfriend, instead of his mate. Another time, two women were comparing myself and his current girlfriend. They said she was more classy, and elegant. Some had said she was more regal, a Crescent she-wolf and was the best fit for Luna, so they didn't know why the goddess picked me. One woman had even described me as a ‘pick-me’ girl. The gossips were becoming quite unbearable, and I didn't know why it affected me. I hadn't always bothered how people thought of me, attractive or not. One time, I was the stunning moon in my pack. If preferences were different, I didn't really mind. I was done with all the attention of my previous life. Also, Alpha Ryker could sleep with the whole town if he so wished, it was none of my busines

  • THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE    CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

RykerIn the past three days, we had exerted energy and resources on reviving Rueben, however the attempts all proved futile. He consistently slipped in and out of consciousness. And even when he was conscious for a few minutes, it didn't do much, as he could barely articulate anything. Each Salutary could barely detect the exact spell that was cast upon the posion, and the knife, and the laboratory Anna had sent the blood samples to had been unable to detect all the components combined to make this one. Potion He was always sedated to prevent those spasmodic reactions, and had to undergo series of rituals to keep the poison from destroying important organs in his body. The toxins had settled on eating the flesh within the wounds. And the Salutaris had used fire and coal to reduce how much of him the poison ate away. We were running out of time, and although I hadn't been awarded the opportunity to challenge it, Black Isle pack was the only option we had at the moment. I didn't want

  • THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE    CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

CadenI had a bad feeling about Ryker leaving for Littlemoon last night. It was not that I didn't believe him capable, or trust his ability to win a war. But, I always worried. Ryker was quite selfless, and would lay down his life for his people. It was both a blessing and curse, more of a curse to me.This worry had kept me awake, burning through several quantities of caffeinated beverages. When Calum had called me, informing me about several helicopters, and trucks leaving the pack en route to Littlemoon, my worry skyrocketed. I paced about the heavily guarded mansion. I had tried reaching Ryker, but for some reason I wasn't able to get hold of him. Then I reached out to Reid, and just like Ryker, his line was not reachable either. After several attempts at other people who could be close to Ryker, and no success, I become restless. The feeling that something might have happened to Ryker was enough to send me into full panic mode. So, I dialled Jerome. He sounded still, yet alert.

  • THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE    CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Ryker“You did what?!” I thundered, my anger swift.“It's just a little time before she'll start facing harrasment. I had your interest at heart” he defended. “My interest?” What the fuck? He went behind by back, orchestrated a full security team and plan without my permission, and then returns to tell me he did it for me. “She is your mate, so yes” he stood his ground. “Talk about double standards!" I turned away from him as I secured my ballistic vest. “ Didn't it occur to you that Lauren deserved a security team too?” I asked him. His eyes hardened at this. He disliked her, and he didn't even bother to shield it anymore. “Alpha, with all due respect, Lauren is a mistress. That is what the pack knows her to be. Xaviera is your mate, and Luna to be” “A mate I do not want!” I spat angrily. It was infuriating how no one could understand how annoying this whole situation was. There was a woman I had invested two years into a relationship with, and had indirectly hinted at a possibl

  • THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE    CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

XavieraFrom the moment I ran into the Alpha last night, I knew the balance I was beginning to find again would tilt. Ever since the incident that sent me far away from home occurred years back, I had avoided the spotlight as much as I could. I hated bringing attention to myself. This world was quite a small place, and the pack responsible for the trouble I was in were alive and lurking, even if I didn't know who they really were. The Crescent moon which had become my respite, and shield from my burdensome past had now placed me in the very position I had tried to avoid. The moment I got home last night, I had quickly gotten out of my dress, freshened up and had settled for Mac and cheese. Anna had come in much later, and I had pretended to be asleep when she came to my room. Adeline and Leesa had rang me non stop until I decided to switch off my phone. Much later, I overheard Anna informing them I was fine and asleep. Last night was too much to take in all at once, and I needed the n
