Chapter 1

"Commander Foster, I bring dire news! Your sister was raped and committed suicide. Your mother wants you to swiftly return and take your sister’s place in the royal wedding!"

At the border of Nidora, several horses' hooves thundered across freshly melted snow. Water splashed in all directions.

Jane Foster's horse was in the lead. She wore a tight-fitting, plain dark battle robe. Her black hair was pulled into a ponytail that left loose ends which danced in the wind along with the hem of her dress. She looked aggressive and intimidating.

Although Jane and her sister Wendy were twins, she had been raised away from her family due to a superstition that twins brought bad luck.

Wendy was kind, gentle, and had never held a grudge against anyone.

Jane couldn’t figure out who would hurt someone as pure and kind as Wendy. She wanted to skin that person alive.

The royal guard soon realized he couldn’t keep pace with the speed she was setting.

"Commander Foster, two of our horses have already died from the journey. There's an inn up ahead. Why don't we take a break?" he called out.

Jane whipped her horse. "Get back to the barracks if you can't keep up! Hyah!"

He was an idiot. They had no time to take a break. Over a hundred lives of the Foster family depended on her right now.

The royal guard tried desperately to catch up with her, and failed. Jane was the fastest cavalry general in the northern camp. She was as fast as the wind.

-

Seven days later, in the Royal City, one of the Foster family's daughters was about to become the queen. It would bring great honor to the family.

People gathered around Foster Mansion to observe the grand occasion of the royal wedding. The groom’s representative arrived, but the bride still did not come out. The crowd murmured.

"I heard that Ms. Foster was abducted by a group of bandits and suffered greatly. The Foster family had to deploy their own guards to rescue her. She might not even be a virgin anymore. How can she still become the queen?"

"The women in the Foster family are all very lucky. For generations, they've always been the top choice for being queen. May Nidora be prosperous forever!"

"Could something bad have happened? Why hasn't the bride come out yet?"

The crowd stood on their tiptoes, eyes locked on Foster Mansion's front door.

Inside the main hall of Foster Mansion, Melinda, the groom's representative, waited. She had come to receive the bride, and had already drunk several glasses of wine while she waited. She couldn’t drink anymore. She waved her hand to reject the wine offered by Robin Foster.

"Mr. Foster, what's taking your daughter so long? Should I check on her in her room? I can't just wait here! I'll be blamed if we miss the golden hour for the marriage!" Melinda exclaimed.

Even the common folk cared about the luckiest hour for the marriage, not to mention that this was a royal wedding to Nidora's noble king.

Melinda was cross. Did the Foster family think this was a joke? If so, they had failed to realize how important the matter was.

At Melinda’s mention of checking on the room, Robin's expression changed abruptly. He quickly collected himself and stood up.

"Ahh! It must be because my wife can't bear to see our daughter get married. She's always been like this. I'll send someone to hurry them along. Melinda, please wait here. We definitely won't miss the golden hour!" He gave the butler a look.

The butler took the hint and immediately ran out. He made his way to the bride’s room, and knocked respectfully. "Madam Gloria, the people from the palace are urging us to hurry again!"

Inside the room, there was no sign of the bride at all.

Gloria Foster fidgeted and wiped the sweat from her forehead with a handkerchief. "Go back there and tell them there's something wrong with the dress. We're getting the tailor to fix it."

The butler glanced around, then whispered through the door. "That won't do, Madam Gloria! Melinda has asked us to hurry along several times now. If we don't give her a specific answer, she'll barge right in!"

Gloria clenched her teeth, wondering what she could do.

Just as her heart started pounding, a silhouette gracefully leaped in through the side window.

Gloria was stunned, and then quickly backed away. "W-Who are you?"

"Mom, it's me."

Jane removed her mask, revealing her beautiful face. Gloria burst into tears of joy as she recognized her.

"Jane, my daughter! You've finally returned!"

Gloria stepped forward to hug Jane tightly as if she was hanging on for dear life. She could finally feel at ease.

"I'm glad to see you, Mom."

Despite the touching reunion, Jane was unemotional, and even seemed a little awkward. She knew they were in a hurry, so she quickly removed her coat and untied her hair. When Gloria saw this, she immediately helped Jane put on the wedding dress.

"Jane, I'm sorry for putting you through this. I know you enjoy your freedom, but you're being forced to marry into the royal family now-"

Jane lifted the hem of her dress and sat down at the dresser.

"Mom, you don't have to explain. I know everything. The most important thing right now is to protect our family."

If the Foster family failed to provide a daughter, it would ruin the royal marriage, and the entire family would be executed.

Gloria sighed. "I'm glad you've come back. It's been so many years. I miss you every day-"

"Mom, how's Wendy doing?" Jane's tone was eerily calm. Her hands were clasped tightly together.

Despite everything, she still hoped Wendy was still alive. She longed for her sister to suddenly show up like she often had when they were children. She would always say, "Jane, I'm here to see you!".

Gloria couldn’t hide the sadness in her eyes. It shattered Jane's delusion.

"Wendy-"

"We've buried her. To be honest, it’s for the best. She suffered too much. Being alive would have been worse than death.

"That night, she was tossed in front of our residence. She was covered in wounds, unclothed, and even had a brand on her chest-" Gloria couldn’t go on. She wiped away her tears and then looked at Jane, who seemed unfazed and cold as ice.

"Who hurt her? Are there any clues?" Jane asked.

"Yes...it’s the king’s favorite concubine, Lady Helena! That evil woman hurt Wendy!"

Crack!

The cosmetic box in Jane’s hand broke as her grip tightened. She made a mental note of what Gloria had said.

Gloria frowned and placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Jane, I know you've been training in the military since you were a child, and you're an adept fighter. However, conflicts in the palace are different from the battlefield. Just protect yourself. Lady Helena is arrogant and domineering and has harmed countless people. However, the king still adores her despite her terrible deeds. Don't fight her."

Wendy was gone. Gloria didn’t want to lose Jane too.

However, nothing could stop Jane.

She draped the white veil over her head and prepared to leave the room. Just as she was about to do so, she heard a shrill voice from outside Foster Mansion.

"The wedding is suspended. We're here on business by Lady Helena's orders!"

Gloria put a restraining hand on Jane’s shoulder. "Let me take a look first."

-

The chamberlain outside Foster Mansion was extraordinarily arrogant. He didn’t seem to hold a high position, but he had a condescending look in his eyes.

"We heard that Ms. Foster was previously abducted by bandits," he announced. "Lady Helena has ordered court ladies to check her for the sake of the royal family's reputation."

"What are you checking for?" Gloria turned pale.

The chamberlain sneered. "We're going to check if Ms. Foster is still a virgin!"

"What?"

Examining a bride on the day she was to be married was unheard of.

It was humiliating!

Serene Palace was where Dina Augustus, the queen dowager, lived. After hearing about the incident at Foster Mansion, Dina seemed somewhat joyful. She turned to look at her maid, Laurel."I met Wendy last year during my birthday celebration. She seemed too docile in nature. I felt then that it would be hard for her to become the queen. I've changed my mind about her. I'm impressed."Laurel had served the queen dowager for a very long time. She knew all about the struggles of living in the palace. She poured her mistress a cup of coffee."But based on the king's favoritism towards Lady Helena, the queen won't stand a chance against that woman from the Cloud Palace, no matter how smart or brave she is," Laurel said. "We can't be sure Lady Helena won't make her suffer tonight."It was clear that she didn’t think the new queen would be capable. The smile on Dina's face faded."You're right. I still remember the day Wilhelmina entered the palace. George was all set to go and pamper he

Jane guessed she was afraid of the tyrant king. With her hands shaking, it was inevitable that Lily would make a mistake. After losing her third strand of hair, Jane couldn’t bear it anymore."Stop. I'll do it myself," Jane said coldly. She was a master of disguise. It was necessary for her to be proficient in tying her hair into various styles. In a matter of seconds, she managed to restore her hair to its original state. Lily was shocked to witness this."Your Majesty, you're so skillful!"However, by the time they were ready to welcome the king, they received news from a royal servant."Your Majesty, Lady Helena had a headache. The king has gone to Cloud Palace."Lily opened her mouth. She was angry but dared not speak.Helena must have pretended to have a headache. There was no way it could have been a coincidence. She mus

Back in Jane's room, the older maid, Maya, who had previously been unfriendly and stern, immediately ordered a bath for Jane. She pushed Lily out of the way while smiling at Jane."Your Majesty, the king has never favored another concubine other than Lady Helena all these years. You're the first one!"Lily stood nearby. She was rather critical of this old maid. Maya hadn’t been behaving so attentively earlier. It was an obvious case of worshiping the powerful and crushing the weak. The status of women in the palace depended on the king's favor. Even someone as high-ranking as the queen would be neglected without his favor.Maya said a lot, but Jane wasn’t paying attention to her."All of you may leave. Lily will be sufficient," she instructed coldly.-After the chamber had cleared, Lily began to speak, worried."Your Majesty, it's a good thing that the king is willing to come. But aren’t you starting a difficult situation with Lady Helena? Your mother told us to keep a low pro

They came from the bed, and it was a man's voice. She knew something was wrong and cried for help. A chamberlain rushed in and quickly stopped her, angrily reprimanding her."You blind fool! That's the king!"Lily was dumbfounded. The king? The tyrant king who murdered people? He towered over her like a lion that was about to slaughter its prey.Jane could try to set herself free, but she stopped moving after discovering who he was. She could not see his face clearly in the dark. However, she could feel he was a deadly threat."My queen, do you care to explain?"His harsh tone was intimidating. It was destined to be a disaster tonight. Jane had expected it.To be honest, it was probably a blessing that she could do it herself instead of losing her virginity to the tyrant king. At least she didn’t have to endure being pinned down.Jane tore off a piece of cloth from her skirt and used it as padding under her body. Then she lifted the hem of her skirt with one hand while holding the dagger upside down with the other.Although she had decided to do it, she still instinctively resisted it. She consoled herself by thinking of it as an injury. She had suffered enough injuries growing up, had she not? With that, she tensed, about to exert all her force-A strong hand gripped her wrist.Jane frowned. George snatched the dagger from her. When he spoke, his tone was even colder than before."Such a stupid woman."Clang! He threw the dagger away from the bed."I don't care if you're a virgin or not. Jane hardly looked like a neglected wife. She was dressed richly in a glamorous gown and looked as regal as a lioness. Her cold gaze made her seem distant and unapproachable, but she exuded nobility. She didn’t have the sickly pale skin that most women in the Royal City strived for either. Instead, she had a healthy, rosy complexion. Her exquisite beauty resembled that of a goddess. The royal servants were used to seeing concubines who looked like Rosalie. Their eyes lit up when they saw how beautiful Jane was. She certainly lived up to her reputation as one of the famous beauties in the Royal City. Ordinary women could hardly compare.Ever since Jane became an adult, she had been living in disguise. Beauty was a liability for her, especially in the barracks. Her master's wife always said her good looks were wasted on her.Lily followed proudly behind Jane.As Jane arrived before the queen dowager, she curtseyed."Greetings, Your Majesty."Dina remained seated. Richard could not bring himself to do it. "Your Majesty, that's a little too cruel to the queen."However, George had already walked away. The entire royal gardens and stables were in view, including the woman who tamed the horse. In his memory, the figure of a young girl riding a horse bore a striking resemblance.-Due to the terrifying ordeal, Dina left first and returned to Serene Palace. On the other hand, Jane went back to the Zen Palace. As a rule, the queen had to be greeted by all the concubines. How much were you involved in tonight's events?"Wilhelmina still wanted to deny it. "Aunt Dina, I didn't–"Dina cut her off. "From the moment the rumors started, I felt something was off. They say the queen and Edward met in Serene Palace and rekindled old feelings. "But that day, Edward came to see me. I refused to meet him and had him sent away. How, then, could he have remained outside all that time? If he had left immediately, would he have met the queen at all?"The more I thought about it, the more I realised the only person who could have influence in Serene Palace was you! She let out only a muffled groan before falling completely silent. Sweat beaded on her forehead, dampening the strands of hair at her temples. The physician inspected the iron arrowhead, his hand trembling slightly as he turned to George."Your Majesty, just as I suspected, it's poisoned!""Is her life in danger?" George asked, standing next to Jane."Fortunately, we removed it in time. Her Majesty will be fine." Seated on the throne, George carefully read through the petition, not missing a single word. After a while, he lifted his gaze to look at Wendy.Jane lowered her gaze to maintain a respectful posture. "I have no idea who brought this petition into the palace or why it was placed inside Lady Rachel's festival gift," she said.Wilhelmina looked at Wendy in surprise. She had informed Wendy that Rachel planned to tamper with Edward's festival gift.It wasn't surprising that Wendy had interfered with the other festival gifts, causing chaos to divert suspicion from herself. That much, Wilhelmina had expected. But the petition–this was beyond her expectations. To place it inside Rachel's gift was truly a ruthless strategy. In this moment, she could only feel relieved that she hadn't made an enemy of Wendy.Though Wilhelmina had realized it much later, she still cooperated seamlessly with Wendy."Your Majesty, if you hadn't ordered us to open our festival gifts, this petition would have

"Your Majesty, even if something's found, it still doesn't prove the queen–""Lady Wilhelmina, what's that?" Josephine was quick to seize the opportunity, and before anyone could stop her, she opened Wilhelmina's gift and revealed an unsettling discovery. "Ahh!
