Chapter 4

Author: Rainstorm
Since the tyrant king was coming, Jane had to ask Lily to redo her hair so she could put the crown and veil back on. However, Lily's hands were shaking. Jane guessed she was afraid of the tyrant king.

With her hands shaking, it was inevitable that Lily would make a mistake.

After losing her third strand of hair, Jane couldn’t bear it anymore.

"Stop. I'll do it myself," Jane said coldly.

She was a master of disguise. It was necessary for her to be proficient in tying her hair into various styles. In a matter of seconds, she managed to restore her hair to its original state. Lily was shocked to witness this.

"Your Majesty, you're so skillful!"

However, by the time they were ready to welcome the king, they received news from a royal servant.

"Your Majesty, Lady Helena had a headache. The king has gone to Cloud Palace."

Lily opened her mouth. She was angry but dared not speak.

Helena must have pretended to have a headache. There was no way it could have been a coincidence. She must have seen the king returning and sent someone to fetch him.

As soon as Jane heard Helena's name, she thought of her sister.

Wendy had been brutally raped and attacked, and it had driven her to commit suicide. Jane needed to avenge her.

The only way to win was to know her enemy well.

Helena was the king's favorite concubine, and expert guards certainly surrounded her. Jane couldn’t afford to act rashly.

-

In Serene Palace, Dina turned the rosary beads in her hands. She was still trying hard to suppress her anger while she questioned everyone.

"The king actually asked Richard to exchange the vows during the wedding today, yet none of you knew about this in advance?!"

All the royal servants standing in front of her lowered their heads.

"We had no idea."

George had always done whatever he wanted. There was nothing Dina could do about it.

However, everyone in the world would think she failed as a parent.

Dina looked sad, and seemed to be troubled by many things.

"Although I'm not his biological mother, I did my best to raise him. How did we end up hating each other-"

Upon hearing this, all the royal servants subconsciously sided with Dina. They thought George did not behave respectfully like a good son.

A servant arrived to deliver news, adding fuel to the fire.

"Your Majesty, the king has returned but has gone to Cloud Palace."

"Ridiculous!" Dina slammed her hands against the coffee table. That bitch Helena dared to cause trouble on a day like this! She really was spoiled beyond reason and had become too arrogant.

Was Wendy completely helpless? Was she going to let Helena walk all over her?

Dina had hoped the queen could keep Helena in line.

Now, it seemed that was not going to happen.

-

Dina wasn’t the only person who thought this way. Several concubines thought the same. Those who were close to each other gathered and discussed the matter among themselves.

"She can't even keep the king around on her wedding night. She's destined to lose to Lady Helena."

A concubine in a green dress felt sympathetic. "I feel bad for the queen.”

She turned to her maid. “Dolly, prepare some emerald jewelry. Tomorrow, I will go give them to the queen."

"All right, Your Highness."

Another concubine sighed. "Lady Helena looks the most like Lady Rosalie. She’s favored by the king. If the queen is smart enough, she should behave as the king wishes and not make a scene-"

A servant entered, bringing news.

"Your Highnesses, I heard the queen has gone to Cloud Palace!"

The concubines gasped and looked at each other before shaking their heads.

"The queen shouldn't have done that."

"That's very inappropriate. If she can't remain composed, won't the king get sick of her?"

"If things get out of hand, the king will definitely side with Lady Helena. Why did the queen do this?"

They were all hoping to have a virtuous queen who could manage the harem harmoniously like previous queens from the Foster family. Back then, concubines served the king together and avoided competing against each other with extreme methods.

Now, it seemed this queen could not be counted on. Helena hadn’t even made a more powerful move, yet the queen was already losing her patience.

-

Outside Cloud Palace, Jane was still in her wedding dress. The crown on her head was a symbol of her noble status.

A queen whose wedding night was ruined by the king's favorite concubine was not only an unsympathetic creature in the palace, but would be looked down upon. It was humiliating enough to be left alone on her wedding night. She should be too embarrassed to even show up here.

The royal guard on duty thought she had come to beg the king to return to her room. Before she even opened her mouth, he spoke.

"Your Majesty, the king gave orders that nobody is allowed to disturb them while the physician is treating Lady Helena inside. I'm afraid I can't let you in."

One of Lady Helena’s maids appeared. "Your Majesty, it's pointless. Lady Helena comes first in the harem. Even if you wish to see the king now, His Majesty won't-"

Jane's beautiful eyes glistened under the moonlight. She looked to the side, and her eyes instantly turned dark.

"Who said I came to see His Majesty?" she asked calmly.

Everyone was silent.

They couldn’t understand why she had come. Was it for the scenery? Did she want to see how much the king favored Helena?

After Jane gave Lily a look, Lily stepped forward and handed a wooden box to the royal guard on duty.

"I heard that Lady Helena is suffering from a headache. This medicine is from my brother. It's quite effective for curing headaches. Lady Helena ought to give it a try."

Everyone looked at each other.

The queen had come to deliver medicine? How could she be so generous? She was definitely pretending to be virtuous.

The royal guard hesitated for a moment before going inside to ask for instructions.

After a moment, a physician came out to carefully inspect the medicine. He sighed in admiration as if he was holding a treasure.

"This is extremely rare medicine!" he exclaimed before hurrying back in.

A short while later, a chamberlain came out and addressed Jane respectfully.

"Your Majesty, Lady Helena has taken the medicine and is already feeling better. The king thanked you and instructed you to return and await his arrival."

The chamberlain thought the queen would be elated to hear this.

In reality, Jane did not feel an ounce of joy. This tyrant king must have been very egotistical. He asked her to await his arrival, making it sound like his presence in her bed was Jane's reward.

Back in Jane's room, the older maid, Maya, who had previously been unfriendly and stern, immediately ordered a bath for Jane. She pushed Lily out of the way while smiling at Jane."Your Majesty, the king has never favored another concubine other than Lady Helena all these years. You're the first one!"Lily stood nearby. She was rather critical of this old maid. Maya hadn’t been behaving so attentively earlier. It was an obvious case of worshiping the powerful and crushing the weak. The status of women in the palace depended on the king's favor. Even someone as high-ranking as the queen would be neglected without his favor.Maya said a lot, but Jane wasn’t paying attention to her."All of you may leave. Lily will be sufficient," she instructed coldly.-After the chamber had cleared, Lily began to speak, worried."Your Majesty, it's a good thing that the king is willing to come. But aren’t you starting a difficult situation with Lady Helena? Your mother told us to keep a low pro

She could not see his face clearly in the dark. However, she could feel he was a deadly threat."My queen, do you care to explain?"His harsh tone was intimidating. It was destined to be a disaster tonight. Jane had expected it.To be honest, it was probably a blessing that she could do it herself instead of losing her virginity to the tyrant king. At least she didn’t have to endure being pinned down.Jane tore off a piece of cloth from her skirt and used it as padding under her body. Then she lifted the hem of her skirt with one hand while holding the dagger upside down with the other.Although she had decided to do it, she still instinctively resisted it. She consoled herself by thinking of it as an injury. She had suffered enough injuries growing up, had she not? With that, she tensed, about to exert all her force-A strong hand gripped her wrist.Jane frowned. George snatched the dagger from her. When he spoke, his tone was even colder than before."Such a stupid woman."Clang! He threw the dagger away from the bed."I don't care if you're a virgin or not. Jane hardly looked like a neglected wife. She was dressed richly in a glamorous gown and looked as regal as a lioness. Her cold gaze made her seem distant and unapproachable, but she exuded nobility. She didn’t have the sickly pale skin that most women in the Royal City strived for either. Instead, she had a healthy, rosy complexion. Her exquisite beauty resembled that of a goddess. The royal servants were used to seeing concubines who looked like Rosalie. Their eyes lit up when they saw how beautiful Jane was. She certainly lived up to her reputation as one of the famous beauties in the Royal City. Ordinary women could hardly compare.Ever since Jane became an adult, she had been living in disguise. Beauty was a liability for her, especially in the barracks. Her master's wife always said her good looks were wasted on her.Lily followed proudly behind Jane.As Jane arrived before the queen dowager, she curtseyed."Greetings, Your Majesty."Dina remained seated. Richard could not bring himself to do it. "Your Majesty, that's a little too cruel to the queen."However, George had already walked away. His majestic figure was already distant, and impossible to disobey.A breeze lifted the hem of Richard’s white coat. He walked down the steps and looked across the distance. The entire royal gardens and stables were in view, including the woman who tamed the horse. In his memory, the figure of a young girl riding a horse bore a striking resemblance.-Due to the terrifying ordeal, Dina left first and returned to Serene Palace. On the other hand, Jane went back to the Zen Palace. As a rule, the queen had to be greeted by all the concubines. However, very few concubines had come to see her. Most of them either claimed to be sick or were busy with internal affairs.Jane had no intention of keeping up false pretenses with them. She dismissed those who came, telling them to return to their palaces. Not long after, someone came to pass on the kin

Richard seemed to have just left Serene Palace. As their paths crossed, he nodded politely to her."Greetings, Wendy."The familiar mode of address that he used indicated his closeness to the king.Lily looked at Richard, lost in thought. The prince was so handsome. He looked well-groomed, elegant, and polite. His temperament was much better than the tyrant king who killed people for no reason. If only her mistress was married to-Lily immediately stopped herself from continuing such a ridiculous thought. There were strict rules in the palace, unlike in the barracks, where women could casually flirt with men.Jane was about to leave when Richard suddenly asked, "Were you frightened when you supervised the beheading yesterday?"Jane’s eyes narrowed. "Not really," she answered shortly."I happened to see when you tamed that horse. You're really good. In fact, the king likes women who know horsemanship. In this regard, you might be able to earn his affection." Richard’s tone w

The water rippled as Jane was lifted up. She reflexively clasped her hands over the front of her body. However, her entire back was already exposed.Without any hesitation, George looked at the back of Jane's waist. There were no signs of bruises. It looked clean and smooth.George frowned. The cold glare in his eyes remained.Jane's palms were warm, and there was sweat on her forehead. Desperate, she had used her prowess to utilize her energy and dissipate the bruises. But it had been so quick she had used up a lot of energy, and was weakened. However, George had not dismissed his suspicions yet. He grabbed her by the waist and applied force with his thumb to her back."Ugh!" Jane felt a sharp pain and couldn’t help but let out a muffled grunt. She endured it and did not dare to make it obvious."Did you suffer from an injury in your back?" George asked coldly.Jane shook her head. The queen is outside the palace. She seeks an audience with you for the gold emblem."However, everyone knew the gold emblem was with Helena. Was the queen deliberately asking for trouble? The chamberlain broke out in a cold sweat, fearing that he would be affected by the king's anger. The large screen behind the throne showed glimpses of moving shadows.George’s face turned gloomy. His pupils looked like a falcon’s. They were sharp and dangerous."Tell her I will dethrone her if she continues to make trouble!""As you wish!"-Outside the royal study, Jane's gaze was calm. Sweat beaded on her forehead, dampening the strands of hair at her temples. The physician inspected the iron arrowhead, his hand trembling slightly as he turned to George."Your Majesty, just as I suspected, it's poisoned!""Is her life in danger?" George asked, standing next to Jane."Fortunately, we removed it in time. Her Majesty will be fine." Seated on the throne, George carefully read through the petition, not missing a single word. After a while, he lifted his gaze to look at Wendy.Jane lowered her gaze to maintain a respectful posture. "I have no idea who brought this petition into the palace or why it was placed inside Lady Rachel's festival gift," she said.Wilhelmina looked at Wendy in surprise. She had informed Wendy that Rachel planned to tamper with Edward's festival gift.It wasn't surprising that Wendy had interfered with the other festival gifts, causing chaos to divert suspicion from herself. That much, Wilhelmina had expected. But the petition–this was beyond her expectations. To place it inside Rachel's gift was truly a ruthless strategy. In this moment, she could only feel relieved that she hadn't made an enemy of Wendy.Though Wilhelmina had realized it much later, she still cooperated seamlessly with Wendy."Your Majesty, if you hadn't ordered us to open our festival gifts, this petition would have
