Chapter 5

Author: Rainstorm
Back in Jane's room, the older maid, Maya, who had previously been unfriendly and stern, immediately ordered a bath for Jane. She pushed Lily out of the way while smiling at Jane.

"Your Majesty, the king has never favored another concubine other than Lady Helena all these years. You're the first one!"

Lily stood nearby. She was rather critical of this old maid. Maya hadn’t been behaving so attentively earlier. It was an obvious case of worshiping the powerful and crushing the weak.

The status of women in the palace depended on the king's favor. Even someone as high-ranking as the queen would be neglected without his favor.

Maya said a lot, but Jane wasn’t paying attention to her.

"All of you may leave. Lily will be sufficient," she instructed coldly.

-

After the chamber had cleared, Lily began to speak, worried.

"Your Majesty, it's a good thing that the king is willing to come. But aren’t you starting a difficult situation with Lady Helena? Your mother told us to keep a low profile in the palace and not make enemies. She specifically mentioned Lady Helena-"

"Was that how Mom taught Wendy too?" Jane asked coldly with a stern look in her eyes.

She did not agree with this method of parenting.

Her master had taught her to repay kindness with kindness. The same could be said about hostility. She only had one life to live, and she ought to live it with no regrets.

In reality, Gloria had raised her children the same way the Foster family had for years. They had high expectations for their daughters, hoping that they would be crowned the next queen, and therefore had demanding requirements.

The Foster family's women had to be the best in everything from music to arts. They were not allowed to lose to outsiders. On top of that, they had to remain virtuous and hold a good reputation.

Wendy had written more than once to Jane and expressed how she envied Jane for her freedom. Wendy hadn’t wanted to become queen.

Now that Jane thought about it, how could Wendy ever have withstood the torture from these people in the palace if she actually became queen?

Lily was one of the few people in the Foster family who knew of Jane's true identity. She was very cautious and reflexively closed the window.

"Your Majesty, walls have ears. You should forget about the things that need to be forgotten. Never mention this again."

Jane seemed determined. "They are too far away to hear us."

She was skilled in combat and could sense other people's auras. If she hadn’t attained such high level skills, she wouldn’t have survived during the two years she served in the army.

Jane was a straightforward person. She didn’t care to beat around the bush.

"I went to Cloud Palace tonight under the pretense of delivering medicine. In reality, I was probing the level of defense of the area."

"Defense? Your Majesty, what are you planning to do?" Lily asked carefully.

"I want to kill her."

"What?!" Shocked, Lily covered her mouth to stop herself from screaming too loudly. Her mistress actually wanted to murder Helena! After calming down, Lily quickly advised her against it.

"Don't do it, Your Majesty. It's too risky!"

Jane nodded seriously. "It certainly is dangerous. Lady Helena really is beloved by the king. Not only does Cloud Palace have tight security, but there are also mechanisms under two of the eaves. I couldn't find a way in. I'll need to make a few more trips to figure it out."

Lily gulped nervously. "But Your Majesty, Madam Gloria said-"

Jane's gaze turned cold. "You were right. We should forget about things that need to be forgotten."

Lily was nervous. That wasn’t what she had meant.

Jane looked at her. "I won't force you. If you want to avenge Wendy too, we can work together. If you're too afraid to be my accomplice, just pretend I didn't say anything. However, you must not reveal to others what I'm going to do. Otherwise, I will kill you."

Jane didn’t mind if the people around her were unable to help her, but she wouldn’t allow them to drag her down.

Lily's forehead was covered in sweat, her heart thumping agitatedly. After struggling to make up her mind for a while, Lily soon recalled the gentle smile on Wendy's face. She slowly closed her eyes.

"Your Majesty, Wendy treated me like her sister. I'm sad that they tortured her so badly too. If I can do something for her, I'll have no regrets!"

Jane looked away. There was a calm look in her eyes. "Since you have decided, don't regret it."

After calming down, Lily had something new to worry about.

"Your Majesty, if you and the king consummate your marriage tonight, he will surely find out that you're a virgin. Lady Helena will later find out too. What if she starts growing suspicious about you?"

Jane was not worried about this.

"Firstly, the king is the leader of this country. He would never bring up matters in the bedroom in such a casual manner, and especially not to his favorite concubine. It would only make her unhappy and serve no valid purpose.

"Secondly, even if the king did tell her, she wouldn't believe him. She would only think he had too big of an ego. Even if his wife was no longer a virgin, he would force himself to accept her. Alternatively, she might suspect that we pulled a trick or two.

"Whatever the outcome, Lady Helena won’t make a big deal out of this. That would only publicly humiliate the king," Jane explained.

"But before the wedding, Lady Helena-"

"Before the wedding, I wasn't the queen. Now, I'm protected by my status."

Lily suddenly had a realization. "In that case, there's no reason to fear the king's arrival," she said.

-

They waited a long time. Even as it approached midnight, the tyrant king still had not arrived.

Jane was still in her pure white silk pajamas. She sat on the bed with an unchanging expression.

"He won't be coming. Let's get some sleep."

"All right, Your Majesty."

Lily felt angry. The king hadn’t kept his word.

Jane was accustomed to taking things as they came. She soon fell asleep.

Later in the night, Jane woke as someone suddenly pressed into her body. It was a man, and he was breathing heavily and moving carelessly as he started to untie her belt.

Jane immediately became alert and wide awake. She instinctively drew the dagger from under her pillow, only for her wrist to be seized in the dark.

She was about to fight back when she heard a deep and furious voice. "My queen, is this an attempt at regicide?"

It was destined to be a disaster tonight. Jane had expected it.To be honest, it was probably a blessing that she could do it herself instead of losing her virginity to the tyrant king. At least she didn’t have to endure being pinned down.Jane tore off a piece of cloth from her skirt and used it as padding under her body. Then she lifted the hem of her skirt with one hand while holding the dagger upside down with the other.Although she had decided to do it, she still instinctively resisted it. She consoled herself by thinking of it as an injury. She had suffered enough injuries growing up, had she not? With that, she tensed, about to exert all her force-A strong hand gripped her wrist.Jane frowned. George snatched the dagger from her. When he spoke, his tone was even colder than before."Such a stupid woman."Clang! He threw the dagger away from the bed."I don't care if you're a virgin or not. Jane hardly looked like a neglected wife. She was dressed richly in a glamorous gown and looked as regal as a lioness. Her cold gaze made her seem distant and unapproachable, but she exuded nobility. She didn’t have the sickly pale skin that most women in the Royal City strived for either. Instead, she had a healthy, rosy complexion. Her exquisite beauty resembled that of a goddess. The royal servants were used to seeing concubines who looked like Rosalie. Their eyes lit up when they saw how beautiful Jane was. She certainly lived up to her reputation as one of the famous beauties in the Royal City. Ordinary women could hardly compare.Ever since Jane became an adult, she had been living in disguise. Beauty was a liability for her, especially in the barracks. Her master's wife always said her good looks were wasted on her.Lily followed proudly behind Jane.As Jane arrived before the queen dowager, she curtseyed."Greetings, Your Majesty."Dina remained seated. Richard could not bring himself to do it. "Your Majesty, that's a little too cruel to the queen."However, George had already walked away. His majestic figure was already distant, and impossible to disobey.A breeze lifted the hem of Richard’s white coat. He walked down the steps and looked across the distance. The entire royal gardens and stables were in view, including the woman who tamed the horse. In his memory, the figure of a young girl riding a horse bore a striking resemblance.-Due to the terrifying ordeal, Dina left first and returned to Serene Palace. On the other hand, Jane went back to the Zen Palace. As a rule, the queen had to be greeted by all the concubines. However, very few concubines had come to see her. Most of them either claimed to be sick or were busy with internal affairs.Jane had no intention of keeping up false pretenses with them. She dismissed those who came, telling them to return to their palaces. Not long after, someone came to pass on the kin

Richard seemed to have just left Serene Palace. As their paths crossed, he nodded politely to her."Greetings, Wendy."The familiar mode of address that he used indicated his closeness to the king.Lily looked at Richard, lost in thought. The prince was so handsome. He looked well-groomed, elegant, and polite. His temperament was much better than the tyrant king who killed people for no reason. If only her mistress was married to-Lily immediately stopped herself from continuing such a ridiculous thought. There were strict rules in the palace, unlike in the barracks, where women could casually flirt with men.Jane was about to leave when Richard suddenly asked, "Were you frightened when you supervised the beheading yesterday?"Jane’s eyes narrowed. "Not really," she answered shortly."I happened to see when you tamed that horse. You're really good. In fact, the king likes women who know horsemanship. In this regard, you might be able to earn his affection." Richard’s tone w

The water rippled as Jane was lifted up. She reflexively clasped her hands over the front of her body. However, her entire back was already exposed.Without any hesitation, George looked at the back of Jane's waist. There were no signs of bruises. It looked clean and smooth.George frowned. The cold glare in his eyes remained.Jane's palms were warm, and there was sweat on her forehead. Desperate, she had used her prowess to utilize her energy and dissipate the bruises. But it had been so quick she had used up a lot of energy, and was weakened. However, George had not dismissed his suspicions yet. He grabbed her by the waist and applied force with his thumb to her back."Ugh!" Jane felt a sharp pain and couldn’t help but let out a muffled grunt. She endured it and did not dare to make it obvious."Did you suffer from an injury in your back?" George asked coldly.Jane shook her head. "No. Why do you ask?""Your waist feels very stiff."His palm was like a torture device, and i

In the royal study, George was reviewing some official documents. The queen is outside the palace. She seeks an audience with you for the gold emblem."However, everyone knew the gold emblem was with Helena. Was the queen deliberately asking for trouble? The chamberlain broke out in a cold sweat, fearing that he would be affected by the king's anger. The large screen behind the throne showed glimpses of moving shadows.George’s face turned gloomy. His pupils looked like a falcon’s. They were sharp and dangerous."Tell her I will dethrone her if she continues to make trouble!""As you wish!"-Outside the royal study, Jane's gaze was calm. You were just trying to rid yourself of those concubines who visit daily to pay their respects! But... wasn’t this price a bit too steep?""That's not all. Now that the mistress of Zen Palace has been confined, fewer eyes are watching us," Jane replied while shifting her gaze outside."Were there many eyes on us before?" Lily asked in surprise.Jane picked up her teacup, took a sip, and spoke slowly."The corner in the east courtyard, the old pagoda tree in the west, the roof on the northern side..." Jane went on.Lily’s eyes widened as she instinctively lowered her voice."Your Majesty, do you mean that there were secret sentries in all those places? W-Were they sent by His Majesty? Helena fainted and was taken back to Cloud Palace.Despite the physicians' efforts, she remained unconscious.George's expression showed a hint of concern as the physician explained, "Your Majesty, Lady Henela's injuries have not yet fully healed. The lack of proper blood circulation is inevitable but not alarming. She simply needs to rest."At Zen Palace, Jane sat before a mirror, carefully removing the jewelry from her hair.Lily, attending to her, still seemed shaken."Your Majesty, are you…are you really unharmed? Ursa was so strong. Shouldn't you let the physicians take a look?"As soon as she spoke, Lily realized her mistake. The mention of dismemberment sent a shiver through the officials.According to the law, the crimes of Cameron and Wallenby didn't warrant such a severe punishment. The two were in utter shock and terror."No! Caleb was merely demoted back then. Why are we to be executed in such a cruel manner?""Your Majesty, have mercy! Spare us, Your Majesty!"Cameron crawled to Caleb's side, clutching his leg desperately."Caleb, save me! We once fought side by side and risked our lives together as comrades…"Yesterday, Cameron had been arrogant and domineering. Now, he was reduced to a pitiful state.Caleb, who loathed Cameron and Wallenby to the core, wished nothing more than to kill them with his own hands. Facing Cameron's pleas, his expression remained cold."You betrayed your comrades, using their lives to pave your way to promotion. Did you think about us as your comrades back then? Cameron, you're even more deserving of death than Wallenby!"Cameron's face turned pale. "No, no! You

The queen and Caleb are bluffing!'Bang!George slammed the letters onto the desk, his sharp gaze brimming with murderous intent."Kneel!"The two men immediately felt their legs weaken, collapsing to the floor.Moments later, the royal servants placed the letters before them, allowing them to see for themselves whether they were being wrongfully accused. If they pleaded innocence, their handwriting would be examined to confirm this.Cameron glanced at the letters and immediately felt a chill down his spine, as if needles were pricking his back.'How could this be?'He had hidden those letters so well. George's gaze was deep and cold. The rule that the harem must not interfere in political affairs existed not only to prevent collusion between the harem and the court, which could lead to the overreach of influential families, but also because most women in the harem were shortsighted. Their petty schemes and vying for favor were tolerable, but in formal situations, they lacked propriety and understanding of boundaries.Just as George was about to intervene to restore balance to the situation, Jane spoke up with composure."Helena indeed misspoke.
