Chapter 40

Aurora pov 

He stepped closer to me, and I could feel the rage in his breath. "Aurora, I don't want to repeat myself. What was the meaning of what you wrote on that sheet of paper?" he asked, pointing at the crumpled paper in my hand.

I took a deep breath, trying to relieve myself from the frequency of how my heart was pounding off my chest. My fear was also becoming obvious, as my hands were shaking while I tried to open my notepad to write some kind of explanation that would get me out of that situation.

"Didn't you hear me? I want some reply now," the beta yelled with a slightly raised voice.

I was frightened by his voice, which made me drop my notepad on the floor.

"Can't you answer the question? What is making you scared?" the beta said, putting on a disgusting look.

I bent down to pick my notepad up, still thinking of words to write. Before I could write anything, he said something that made me realize what to reply.

"Aurora, what are you really hiding from us?" the beta asked, stepping backward a bit to give me space to pick my notepad.

I stood up and wrote, "I am not hiding anything."

Then he asked, "Who did you have a conversation with that I saw on the sheet of paper? It says, 'I would explain to you, but please don't tell him what you are seeing.'"

I was caught off guard by the beta's question, and my mind went blank. I didn't know what to write or how to explain the note. I tried to think of a convincing lie, but my hands were shaking too much to write.

The beta's eyes narrowed, and he took a step closer to me. "Aurora, I'm warning you. Tell me the truth. Who were you talking to, and what were you talking about?"

I felt a surge of fear and knew I had to think fast. I took a deep breath and wrote, "I was just writing a story. It's not real."

The beta's expression didn't change, and he looked at me skeptically. "A story? At a time like this? I don't believe you, Aurora."

I knew I had to come up with something more convincing, or else the beta would keep pushing me for the truth. But what could I say?

The beta's eyes seemed to bore into my soul, as if searching for any sign of deception. I felt my heart racing and my palms growing sweaty.

"I'm telling the truth," I wrote, trying to sound convincing. "It's just a story I've been working on. I didn't mean to worry anyone."

The beta raised an eyebrow. "A story, huh? Then why did you write 'please don't tell him what you are seeing'? Who is 'him', Aurora?"

I hesitated, unsure of how to respond. I couldn't think of a plausible explanation, and I knew the beta wouldn't believe me if I tried to make something up.

Just as the beta was about to press me further, a loud noise echoed from outside the room. The beta's head jerked towards the door, and he took a step back.

"What was that?" he muttered to himself.

I took advantage of the distraction to try and come up with a plan. But before I could think of anything, the door burst open and one of the pack members rushed in.

"Beta, we have a problem," the pack member said, out of breath. "There's been another attack. This time, it's worse."

The beta's expression turned grim, and he nodded curtly. "I'm on my way. Aurora, stay here and don't go anywhere."

I nodded, still trying to process what was happening. The beta turned and followed the pack member out of the room, leaving me alone.

As soon as the door closed behind them, I let out a sigh of relief. I had narrowly escaped having to answer the beta's questions, but I knew it was only a temporary reprieve.

I looked down at the crumpled paper still clutched in my hand, and my mind began to racing.

I knew I had to find answers, but for now, I was trapped. The beta had ordered me to stay in the room, and I had no idea when he would return.

I walked over to the window and looked out, trying to distract myself from the questions swirling in my head. But as I gazed out into the darkness, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being watched.

I remained in my room as minutes turned into hours. It was just my lonely self with the background sound of the clock ticking. I dozed off with the silence.

My eyes widened open as I suddenly woke up due to the sound of knocks on my door. I felt a headache from the increasingly loud knocks. I stood up in anger after repeatedly hitting my bed. Slowly, I opened my door, peeking through to see a huge figure the guard with a faded smile.

"Good morning, madam," he said.

I nodded in response, putting on a worried look on my face.

"Sorry, ma, for disturbing you at this time," the guard said.

I nodded and gave him way to enter.

"The alpha sent me to you, ma," the guard said, looking down and avoiding eye contact with me.

I walked up to the table to pick up my notepad to begin asking questions.

"The alpha said a report reached him from his beta about a sheet of paper the beta saw," the guard said.

Upon hearing that it was about the sheet of paper, the guard's visit was concerning. My heart skipped a beat.

"But he said the investigation would continue when the beta comes back, as he has gone for a mission," the guard said.

No wonder the beta was not able to come back last night; that meant the attack was truly worse. But another thought came to me, giving me relief: since the beta would be on a mission, everything would become normal now.
