Just like that, Calvin knelt from day into night. Yet, my father never yielded and let him in.

"Cal."

It was midnight when a soft voice sounded behind him. He was lying on the ground, exhausted.

He turned, his gaze empty. Even when he saw Charlotte, his emotions didn't seem to fluctuate.

"Heather is already gone. What you're doing now is pointless. Stop kneeling and get up,” she urged, trying to lift him off the ground.

"No, you should leave. I must see Hattie. This is my penance for wronging her,” he said, pushing her away for the first time.

"But she's already dead. It's impossible to see her again. Didn't you say you only felt guilt for her and not love? Come with me. We can live a good life abroad." At this point, she was growing desperate.

Calvin shook his head. "No, I was wrong. I hadn't realized my true feelings. I thought I still loved you, but now I understand it was my stubborn pride speaking. Without knowing it, I had already fallen in love with Heather."
