"Get lost! Get out, don't dirty Hattie's space. You're not worthy of being her husband!" Cynthia stepped forward, pulling both Calvin and Charlotte away from me.

"Mrs. Keane, let go. You're hurting me." Charlotte frowned slightly, instantly drawing Calvin's sympathy.

"Mom, let go of her. You look like you've lost your mind!" Calvin pried Charlotte free and held her defensively in his arms.

"Don't call me Mom! I don't have a son like you. I didn't give birth to a heartless wretch like you."

Charlotte's eyes welled up with tears. "Mrs. Keane, I understand that there's been a misunderstanding. Calvin and I are ordinary friends. If you don't like me, I pledge not to show my face before you again."
