Chapter 1

Calvin Keane took all the supplies from the house, leaving me not even a pack of instant noodles.

I felt a wave of sorrow wash over me, and tears began to fall against my will.

But I didn't have time to be sad—I wanted to live.

The floor-to-ceiling window in the living room had already sustained a large crack. Although I had covered it with tape, there was no preventing it from shattering.

I instantly pushed the couch and table against it, hoping it would hold for a while.

After all that, I felt so utterly drained. Without trying to fight it, I slid down against the table in exhaustion.

Although I was extremely tired, memories from the past kept flashing through my mind.

The news had been warning for a while now that these few days would see a hurricane.

Just a few days ago, I found out I was pregnant with a home test. I hadn't even set aside the time to celebrate before the extreme weather arrived.

I had stocked up on essentials from the supermarket. Yet, they were ultimately taken away for someone else.

Earlier that day, Calvin had received a call from his unattainable love Charlotte Larson.

"Calvin, my window has been blown away. The wind is so strong! I'm terrified. Can you come and save me? There's nothing here—am I going to die? Ah!"

A scream cut through the line, followed by silence.

Calvin flew into a panic. Frantically, he called out her name, over and over again.

Then, he swiftly grabbed a bag, stuffing in all the supplies I'd bought. He didn't even spare me the tape I got to seal the windows.

"Lottie's in trouble. I have to go and save her."

I grabbed his sleeve. "There's a hurricane raging outside. No public transport will be available right now. Are you planning to walk over? Also, you've taken everything—what about me?"

I was only saying these out of concern for his safety. Yet, Calvin only viewed me as a selfish, self-centered woman.

"Heather Shea, how could you be so selfish? Lottie's life is at stake! If I have to walk over, I'm walking over! It's safe enough in this house, and I'm only taking some of your supplies. You're always so petty. This is why you'll never compare to Lottie."

With that, he shoved me aside and picked up his bags, ready to leave.

I caught hold of his pant leg. "At least leave me something. I'm pregnant. Are you really going to just watch me die?"

I thought the words would knock at least the slightest sense into him, but he only sneered. "I can't believe you'd stoop so low just to keep me here. I'm not listening to you this time. I have to save Lottie. You owe it to her."

Calvin booted me aside and left with all the supplies.

The moment he left, the large window in the living room cracked with a loud snap.

Instinctively, I tried to run into the bedroom, only to find that Calvin had locked the door.

A few days before that, I was tidying up in the closet when an old, shabby box fell out. Its contents spewed out across the floor.

Calvin never liked it when people touched his belongings. I swiftly crouched down to gather everything up and put it back.

Unfortunately, Calvin walked in right that moment.

His eyes landed on the things in my hands, and utter disgust began spilling from them. He then proceeded to snatch the items from me.

I was about to explain, but he grabbed my hand forcefully and threw me out of the room. "Get out! Who said you could touch my stuff?"

For the next few days, Calvin locked me out of the bedroom. I had to resort to sleeping on the couch.
