Chapter 48

HELEN'S POV

I stood outside Gina’s door. My heart was pounding so loudly that I was sure she could hear it through the wood. I knew what was coming. There was no escaping it now. I had failed her, and Gina wasn’t the type to let failure slide—not without consequences.

Taking a deep breath, I knocked on the door. There was a pause, just long enough for me to reconsider everything that had brought me to this moment. But before I could, her voice called out.

"Enter"

I pushed the door open slowly, stepping into her room. Gina stood by the window with her back to me. Her posture was rigid and I knew she was annoyed. I could basically see her body tremble a little. My heart dropped to the pit of my stomach.

“You wanted to see me, Gina?” I asked, my voice trembling slightly.

She didn’t turn around. “You messed up, Helen. I trusted you with a simple task, and you failed.”

“I—I’m sorry, Gina,” I said, “I did exactly as you instructed. I gave Elise the drink, just as you asked, but—”
